APIs & Crawl Budget: Don’t block API requests when they load important content

One participant asked whether a website should ban subdomains that make API requests because they seem to take up a lot of crawl budget. They also asked how API endpoints are discovered or used by Google.

John first clarified that API endpoints are typically used by JavaScript on a website. When Google renders the page, it tries to load the content provided by the API and use it to render the page. Interstitials (such as those that require users to confirm their age before browsing) can negatively impact crawling and indexing if not properly implemented. Googlebot doesn’t click buttons or fill out forms, so interstitials that require these actions before the page loads may prevent Googlebot from crawling the content itself. Ideally, it’s recommended to use JS/CSS to display interstitials over already loaded content. Since the content is still loading and users can access it after navigating the interstitials, this would not be considered cloaking.

Not all hidden text is considered bad

A user asked if all hidden text violated Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. John explained that hidden text becomes problematic when it’s there to fool search engines. The question was asked whether using noscript tags could be a workaround to allow content to be seen by Google. John said that Google generally ignores content in noscript tags, so it wouldn’t be a workaround if the content you included in noscript was content you wanted to include for indexing.

Google can only index what Googlebot sees

In response to a question about whether there are cloaking issues when it comes to showing Google different content than what a user would see on a more personalized page, John clarified that only what Googlebot indexes is indexed sees. Googlebot typically crawls from the US and without cookies, so any content that is present will be indexed for the site. So on personalized pages, make sure you only change things for users that aren’t critical to how you want to be seen in search.

Use View Source or Inspect Element to ensure that hidden content in the HTML code is easily accessible

If you have content hidden behind a tab or accordion, John recommends using the View Source or Inspect Element tool to ensure that the content is in the HTML by default. Content preloaded in the HTML code is treated as normal content on the page. However, if interaction is required to load it, Google cannot crawl or index it.

Text can even be hidden in comment tags, which search engines are known to overlook and fail to index.

As ridiculous as some of these techniques may sound, it only takes an affiliate site SEO or two to report it works, and half the industry is following suit.

Why hidden text used to be spam

The main reason some still use hidden text is that it is a way to improve the click-through rate from the spam page to another page where the consumer can make a purchase.

This is a variation of the bait and switch.

Rather than replacing one product with another product (like the classic bait and switch), this technique offers a product for sale and then sends the consumer somewhere else to buy it.

So, one way to increase affiliate sales (or even ad clicks) is to create a webpage that offers a specific product.

When a consumer clicks through from a search result, they are presented with a highly-converting webpage that encourages them to find the product on another site.

But in order to rank this conversion-optimized page, they need to show the search engines a different page.

This is where cloaking comes into play.

The camouflaged content could have been a real webpage at some point in the past, with real links still pointing to the webpage to improve its ranking.

That way, a search engine following incoming links will find and rank the old content.

But a website visitor finds conversion-optimized content.

The purpose was to improve sales or ad clicks for the publisher.

Penalties for hidden text

Websites using hidden text tactics are still at risk of receiving manual action from Google.

A manual action is when someone at Google reviews a website and finds that it violates Google’s policies.

Difference between hidden text and hidden content with tabs

The hidden text penalty can seem confusing.

Many websites, both large and small, have content hidden behind a tab that requires a click to view the content.

There is a difference between hidden text and content hidden behind a tab.

The difference is that the website gives the user a visible signal that there is more content and how to get it.

So I’m going to introduce you to a powerful combination of tools that can be used in our search for hidden text and links: Firefox and the Web Developer Toolbar. Using this combination allows us to “edit” the website we’re looking at on the fly.

Some many options, so little time

By default, the web developer toolbar has well over 100 different settings that can also be used in combination. To save you from clicking all those wonderful buttons, I did that for you! Below is an overview of the 10 best ways to make hidden links and text visible using the web developer toolbar.

Disable > Javascript > All Javascript

Disable > Page Colors

CSS > Disable Styles > All Styles

Images > Disable Images > All Images

Disable notifications for specific apps

The lock screen settings apply to all your apps, but you can also control app notifications individually. Go back to Settings and select Apps & notifications. You should see a list of recently opened apps at the top, or you can view all apps in alphabetical order. Tap an app’s name, choose App Notifications, and toggle the switch from On to Off to disable notifications.
