The Ugly Truth about No-See-Ums on Sanibel

This post will address a small but very big concern.

Those who travel to Sanibel have alluded to tiny horse flies, which often live near water. They’re so tiny that they’re not generally visible, hence their apt name, no-see-ums. Similar to the mosquito, only the females bite because they need the proteins from the blood to form their eggs. The no-see-ums are common not only on Sanibel, but also in the Caribbean and any tropical region where there is water nearby.

Sometimes our holiday guests ask if traveling in winter is a way to avoid these pests and we have to be honest that the bigger factor in avoiding no-see-ums is not the time of year but the time of day and the strength of the breeze is . No-see-ums are worse at dawn and dusk and when the air is still.

There are several preventive measures to prevent them from being bitten in the first place. The first is to wear long sleeves, long pants, gloves, shoes, and socks. Aside from making you look like an idiot walking the beaches of Southwest Florida, the no-see-ums would opt for your bare face. The chemical DEET, which is also effective against mosquitoes, seems to help in a concentration of at least 30 percent. Another local preventive measure is applying Skin So Soft beauty product (or any baby oil) which effectively locks the no-see-um in the oil, thereby preventing them from even being able to bite. Whatever you decide, be very careful not to use sunscreen and DEET together, as this will both increase the absorption of DEET into the person’s bloodstream (which is not good!) and break down the protective ingredients in the sunscreen, causing it becomes ineffective. You’re effectively killing two birds with one stone, and this stone will end up putting you at risk as well. Never mix these two chemicals.

For people who want to avoid using chemicals, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) also recommends using lemon eucalyptus oil, which is almost as effective as DEET. Consumer reports recommend a product called Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, which contains a tiny amount of biochemical pesticides but is far less toxic than DEET.

One of the simplest and easiest ways to avoid being bitten by no-see-ums is with wind. A ceiling fan, small house fan, or an afternoon breeze is enough to hold down the no-see-ums, since they’re so tiny that almost any breeze (natural or not) will keep them from getting airborne. No-see-ums are so tiny they can even get into screened lanais.

Some people just get lucky and their chemistry isn’t at all attractive to these walkers. One person in a pair can get multiple bites, and the other not at all.

If you don’t know how attractive you are, just take every precaution and you should be fine.

No See Ums are a big problem

No – Chiggers are a different creature and are only picked up by walking through the undergrowth – they don’t fly.

There are about 47 species of midges in Florida – all falling under the colloquial “noseeum” – http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/aquatic/biting_midges.htm

Noseums are definitely detectable when they bite — mostly because unlike mosquitoes, which have an ultra-fine needle they can use to pierce your skin and draw your blood, noseums (females only – males only eat nectar, just like Mosquitoes) have a set of ripped off jaws that they use to literally rip through your skin. They then inject a tiny droplet of acidic saliva to draw more blood into the wound, and then hungrily draw away any blood that has pooled in the wound. We are then typically allergic to the saliva, i.e. the burning and itching that we feel when they bite.

As gory as it sounds, all of this takes place on a page no bigger than the period/period at the end of this sentence – but it tells you why it’s so crazy.

Beware of the bites, though—although nasal cavities aren’t vectors of human disease, scratching can lead to secondary topical infections.

How to Conquer No-See-Ums on Sanibel Island!

Posted on Friday 16th August 2019

If you’ve ever spent time in Southwest Florida during the summer months, you’re most likely used to Florida’s least threat — the no-see-um. Some people are more prone to this than others, myself being one of them. I’ve tried a variety of insect repellents and aftercare products, so I consider myself an expert in the field. Just like that…

Best Insect Repellents:

Avon Skin So Soft – a tried and true island favourite. This is the perfect product to create a thick barrier for your skin that the insects cannot penetrate.

Exofficio anti-insect clothing – it actually works! Exofficio offers a wide range of different clothing options (tops, bottoms, buffs) for men and women that offer their innovative anti-insect technology. The repellent built into the fabric lasts up to 70 washes. Stop by Adventures in Paradise Outfitters at Tahitian Gardens Plaza for all your exofficio anti-insect needs.

This is your classic bug spray with a higher concentration of DEET, known to be an effective insect repellent.

The most effective aftercare products:

Witch Hazel – perfect for calming and soothing skin after a bite.

Benadryl Extra Strength Itch Relief Stick – can be applied directly to bites for relief. Convenient size to keep in your beach bag, backpack, etc.

Self control – don’t itch that bite! I struggle with the concept all the time, but the best thing you can do about a bug bite is leave it alone.

I think we all have to thank Lee County Mosquito Control for helping to keep not only mosquitoes but also no-see-ums at manageable levels – they are the real MVPS. I hope my recommendations have helped, and see you next week.

Greetings from paradise,

caitlyn
