No Time to Die (2021) YIFY

Rated 3/10 by davidmvining

Well that wasn’t very good.

This is a film that feels like it was written by a committee, with anything resembling a central idea watered down to nothing. I could agree if the film, Cary Fukunaga’s No Time to Die, Daniel Craig’s final appearance as secret agent James Bond, operates on a basic entertainment level, but the committee-like script destroys any sense of structure in the story, creating stops and beginnings , which never feel right, while the story itself feels like a beginning at various points. The emotional connection is contrived and weak, undermining the film’s supposedly emotional ending. This is…a huge mess and one of the worst Bond films. Not the worst, but it’s pretty close.

The desire to make all of Craig’s films into one giant, interconnected puzzle has always been a half-hearted effort, beginning in the previous film Spectre, and the continuation of the effort here is borderline embarrassing. After an opening showing a young French girl escaping an assassin when he takes pity on her and pulls her out of a frozen lake (taken from a line of dialogue in the previous film), we get Bond (Craig) and Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux ), the girl from the last movie, is enjoying the time together in Italy. They are in love, and the film spends very little time trying to convince us before Madeleine tells Bond that as long as Bond is still obsessed with Vesper Lynd, they will never be happy together. I mean what? If we’re going to treat these five films as one long story, then we have to consider the idea that Bond’s dismissal of Lynd’s death at the end of Casino Royale was final and…erm…that he let loose his anger at her death at the end of Quantum of Solace was also final. She hadn’t been mentioned in Skyfall (which felt like it happened years, maybe even more than a decade, after the end of Quantum) and only mentioned in a single line of dialogue in Specter by someone else. This is the start of an attempt to get Craig’s Bond to say goodbye to the entire franchise, and it just isn’t working.

At Lynd’s grave, Bond is attacked by Specter and blames Madeleine. When they escape, he puts them on a train and promises never to see them again before we have our title sequence and a five-year head start. Why this jump of five years? Giving Bond a child is the reason. However, he doesn’t know anything about that yet. Now retired, his nickname 007 was passed from M (Ralph Fiennes) to Nomi (Lashana Lynch). When a mysterious figure raids a top-secret British bio-lab and steals a DNA target weapon and a defecting Russian scientist (David Dencik), the uncooperative CIA and MI6 are both on the trail, starting in Santiago, Cuba. American agent Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) invites Bond on the mission, and the film makes big mistakes.

Since this is the Bond farewell tour, he bids farewell to all the major figures in the franchise, including Leiter. Who does Bond spend most of his time with in Cuba? Paloma (Ana de Armas), a new secret agent who looks great in a skintight dress, kicks some butts and then disappears from the movie entirely. This mission should have been done with Leiter so they could have one last hooray before Leiter dies. Instead, it’s with a throwaway character that doesn’t matter. The other problem with this scene is that it’s the conclusion of the chapter on SPECTER as an organization, with all members showing up to a birthday party for Ernst Blofeld (Christoph Waltz), who is in a maximum security prison in London, and observing the events a bionic eye that he can see through… sort of. I do not know. It does not matter. This movie is stupid. The bigger problem is that since SPECTER isn’t actually the antagonist of this movie, they’re given a big set after a big set that portrays them as the villain. This film just saunters from one sequence to the next without any really clear narrative drive.

Leiter is betrayed, Bond loses the scientist and Bond returns to London to visit MI6 and M as visitors. It’s here that we learn that M is behind the entire DNA weapon project, which makes the movie feel like it’s actually starting, more than an hour into the movie. Bond needs to come in to speak to Blofeld to find out what might be happening, who might be behind all this, and yet Blofeld will only be speaking to his therapist, Madeleine. So our hero and his lady meet again and they are distant and borderline towards each other. Yes, this is a great love story.

However, Madeleine became involved in Safin’s (Rami Malek) plot by using a perfume spiked with the DNA nanobots meant to kill Blofeld, which Bond touched and then infected Blofeld upon their meeting. Again… Blofeld isn’t the antagonist of this movie, and we get a longer sequence, almost halfway through that endless 170 minutes, where he ends up dying while divulging the tiniest bit of information that Madeleine and Safin are connected, information that Madeleine almost told Bond herself. This is just another entry in the farewell tour screen time, and it makes little sense.

Madeleine flees with Bond to her mother’s old house in Scandinavia, where he meets his daughter, whom Madeleine claims is not his. After a quick confession of love between the two, they are discovered and forced to flee. The effort is drawn out and ultimately futile when Safin captures both Madeleine and the girl and flees to his island base.

I think it’s easy to see the odd mix-up going on here in terms of tone, on top of all the structural and thematic issues at play. The film takes some of the franchise’s more ridiculous elements (bionic eyes, supercars, island hideouts) and narrates them in the most mundane of ways to align with the more sober assessment of Bond’s ending. It’s such a strange combination that when Bond uses his EMP watch to blow up the bionic eye in the head of the villain he’s smothering and he lets out a quip, it’s just one of the most bizarre things in the movie is. I think it’s pretty obvious that Barbara Broccoli has a thing for Moore-era films, and she ultimately has to live up to it, fitting or not. Or maybe it’s a Fukunaga thing, I don’t know. And that points to the problem of lack of author intent. The movie is everywhere.

Paloma was not written by the film’s main screenwriter, but by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (presumably at Craig’s urging) to add more kickass women, fitting or not. It ultimately doesn’t because it breaks the overall point of the entire sequence, Bond says goodbye to Felix. Nomi feels like a dope to some of the audience that wants a female James Bond, but she’s ultimately pointless and contributes shockingly little to plot movement or the advancement of thematic ideas, though she does about halfway through the film see is. Her big moment comes when she kicks a physically unassuming man into a tank of acid and makes a remark that alludes to the film’s title. At this point in the film, he doesn’t matter, and if he just disappeared, no one would have complained. Instead, they give Nomi his death. The whole subplot with SPECTER, including Blofeld, is something that is resolved in the first act of a movie to quickly determine the danger of the new villain and instead takes up half of the movie.

And then there is Safin. Malek isn’t exactly bad as Safin, but he’s largely unremarkable. I remember reading an interview with Fukunaga saying that he and Malek worked really hard to make him as boring as possible, I mean they worked really hard to make sure he was has an accent that cannot be tied to any country. Really, it boils down to Malek whispering through pretty much all of his lines, and they’re almost all pretentious nonsense. He’s introduced about halfway through and doesn’t get any real screen time until the final act is rolled up. His big meeting with Bond is full of stuff about how they are two sides of the same coin, and yet no attempt has been made to actually substantiate this in any way. It’s supposedly, I have to guess here, because they both kill people, the laziest way to attempt this contrast. The only time in the franchise that this worked was with The Man with the Golden Gun, and the antagonist was actually an alternate version of Bond, another one-on-one killer. It’s also so late in the movie to come up with that kind of idea given the jumble of things that came before that it can’t really survive a landing, especially if it’s unrelated to anything before.

This movie is a disaster. There’s no one in charge of the narrative, and what ends up happening is that, much like the Lethal Weapon sequels, the script is there to please various stakeholders rather than tell an interesting story. The grand finale builds on that idea of emotional connection, which the film half-heartedly attempts and fails to achieve. A random death for Bond probably would have worked better.

However, there are moments here that work. There’s a cool little thing in the finale when Bond quickly turns to shoot someone behind him, mimicking the cannon barrel from the vents. The action is generally well done, it just happens randomly with no real repercussions. Ana de Armas is fun as Paloma despite her character’s general futility. Jamaica looks pretty. Hans Zimmer’s score is quite powerful. Honestly, that’s it.

I liked Craig’s tenure as Bond, but this is honestly a Bond adventure I’ll never have to see again.
