What is a novena?

This Catholic practice of prayer probably comes from the “first novena” shared in Acts. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples gathered to ask him about the restoration of Israel. Jesus said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or seasons which the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:7-8).

So the disciples and Mary waited together and prayed that the Holy Spirit would guide them. Finally, nine days later, the Holy Spirit descended on her. “When the time of Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place” (Acts 2:1). When the disciples prayed together for nine days for the coming of the Holy Spirit, they followed the form of novena prayer that is so popular today.

Many saints and other holy people have had novenas revealed by Christ or the Virgin Mary. Types of novenas

anticipation

We pray novenas in anticipation before or after a funeral, pray for the soul of the deceased and ask God to be close to the mourners. This could be the novena of a saint close to them, or a novena to Christ, such as the novena of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

With these novenas we hope to prepare ourselves for the nine days before a sacrament or other important day. For example, some couples might pray a novena before their wedding anniversary, or you might pray the Christmas novena of St. Andrew before the birth of Jesus.

Novenas in supplications ask God to answer a prayer or ask a specific saint for his intercession. First, identify your request or intention for prayer. Then choose a saint who is related to the topic. For example, you might pray the St. Joseph the Worker Novena when praying about employment; we offer this novena in Hallow.

Why pray a novena?

We pray for novenas for a specific purpose or grace, such as for a loved one, healing, forgiveness, clarity in making a big decision, etc. However, they are not magic. We cannot assume that our prayers will be answered immediately. And sometimes what we pray for isn’t exactly what we need. Rather, we pray novenas to grow in patience and to place our trust in God, just as the apostles prayed in anticipation of the Holy Spirit coming to them.

We pray novenas to become disciples, to grow in discipline, and to open our hearts to God’s will. Whether our purpose is fulfilled or not, we end the nine days in gratitude for God’s presence in our lives.

When do you pray a novena?

Some novenas are prayed at specific times, such as the novena of Divine Mercy, which begins on Good Friday. Traditionally, many people choose to pray novenas asking for the intercession of a saint during the nine days leading up to the feast day of this saint. If you pray before a sacrament or event, pray the novena nine days before or after it. In truth, one can say a novena at any time. Novenas guide us to strengthen our trust in God – and we need that in all situations in life.

How to Pray: A Novena

Identify your intention.

Before you commit to praying for nine days, take some time to think about what your purpose for prayer is. Do you want to mentally prepare for an event? Or pray for a loved one who is struggling? Perhaps you are simply looking for encouragement to develop a strong habit of prayer. Remember, asking the Holy Spirit for guidance is never a bad idea!

Choose a novena.

After taking some time to prepare for prayer, choose a novena that reflects your intention. This could be a prayer for that specific purpose, or it could be a novena to a saint who is known and loved in the subject you are struggling with or for whom you have gratitude at this time in your life. Know that it doesn’t have to be “perfect”; Taking time each day to pray for a specific purpose will hopefully bring you clarity and peace and guide you to put your trust in God.

Dedicate nine days.

Once you begin a novena, dedicate time each day to be present with God and pray with Him. Sometimes it’s difficult to stay on track. We recommend reserving a specific time and setting a reminder on your phone (or in Hallow) or add it to your calendar for the nine days. You might also consider asking someone to pray the novena with you to hold each other accountable.

Embrace the novena.

As you embark on this prayer journey, try to embrace it fully each day. Each day may seem a little different to you, but try to accompany your time in prayer with other acts of faith. It could be social media fasting or gossip, or it could be doing something good for someone else every day. Let these nine days of prayer transform you in more ways than just dedicating time each day to prayer.

Be patient.

Remember, novenas are not magic. When you come to the end of your novena and your prayers seem to go unanswered, know that God hears your prayers and loves you. And often our prayers are not answered in the way we hoped. Ask for God’s help to trust Him and desire His will to be done.

A novena (from Latin novem, “nine”) is an ancient tradition of devotional prayer in Christianity, consisting of private or public prayers repeated for nine consecutive days or weeks.[1] The nine days between Ascension Day and Pentecost are often regarded as the first novena, when the disciples gathered in the Upper Room and devoted themselves to prayer.[2]

In some Christian communities, such as Africa, Latin America, and the Philippines, novena traditions are popular and include devotional rituals such as communal prayers, the decoration of statues, the singing of hymns with music, and communal fiesta events over drinks, refreshments, or processions.

Novenas are most commonly prayed by members of the Roman Catholic Church, but also by Lutherans, Anglicans, and Eastern Orthodox Christians; they were also used in ecumenical Christian contexts.[3] The prayers are often taken from devotional prayer books, or consist of reciting the rosary (a “rosary novena”), or short prayers throughout the day. Novena prayers are usually printed in small booklets, and the novena is often dedicated to a particular angel, saint, Marian title of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or one of the Persons of the Holy Trinity.

The word novena comes from the Latin word for nine. The practice of the novena is based on early Christianity, where masses of devotional prayers were held for a deceased person for nine days.[4] The practice can trace its origins to an early Greek and Roman custom performed by families, consisting of nine days of mourning after the death of a loved one, followed by a feast originally associated with Catholic writers such as St. Augustine, Pseudo-Alcuin, prompted and John Beleth to warn Christians not to emulate the custom.[5]

Over time, members of the Roman Catholic faith began to perform the novena with Christian themes such as the nine months Jesus spent in the womb, the abandonment of his spirit at the ninth hour, and the occasion in the Upper Room with the Twelve Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary, as they prayed for nine days until the Holy Spirit descended on Pentecost. In the New Testament, this biblical event is often quoted from Acts 1:12-2:5. The Fathers of the Church also gave special meaning to the number nine, considering it a symbol of the imperfect man turning to God in prayer (because of its closeness to the number ten, which represents perfection and God).[5]

Papal recognition[ edit ]

The practice of the novena grew in the Middle Ages, involving nine days of devout prayer before a feast in honor of a saint identified on a liturgical calendar. By the 11th century, the practice of novenas in Christianity had become a means of asking for spiritual or personal favors through a saint such as the Virgin Mary. After the Protestant Reformation and Counter-Reformation, the Catholic Church formally allowed novenas, notably through the papal approval of a large number of novenas by Pope Pius IX[4].

There are three recognized categories of novenas in the Roman Catholic Church, although this distinction is not exclusive:

According to standard liturgical norms, novenas may be performed in church, at home, or wherever solemn prayer is appropriate, although some novenas with indulgences require church attendance. Sometimes a special candle or incense is lit at the beginning of the novena that burns during the nine days of prayer.

The first chapter of the General Principles of Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 13, of Vatican II (1962-1965) attempted to provide guidance on the place of novenas in Christian piety:

Devotions should be designed to harmonize with the liturgical times, agree with, somehow derive from, and lead people to the sacred liturgy, since, indeed, by its very nature, the liturgy far surpasses each of them.[7 ]

In the Roman Catholic tradition, novena prayers typically include a praise to Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, or some other saint, and a personal request. Novenas are a widespread practice in Catholic history.[8] Novena prayers are also practiced by Lutheran, Orthodox, and Anglican Christians who hold close or similar beliefs regarding their pious practice.[3] In addition, novenas have also been used in an ecumenical Christian context, such as those broadcast by Premier Christian Radio, to pray for church renewal.[9]

A novena can be done at any time. The Devotion of the Nine First Fridays in Honor of the Sacred Heart is a novena.[5] Some parishes conduct a perpetual novena, in which the prayers for a specific novena are recited weekly.

Other novenas are traditionally held in preparation for a specific feast day.

Regional customs[ edit ]

Africa [edit]

Novena practices were introduced into communities by Christian missionaries in their colonial and postmodern proselytizing efforts in Africa, as well as in new world plantation colonies where African slaves were settled, as in Brazil. These initiatives brought with them a sense of socio-religious community.[20]

Some practices are unique to Africa. Various denominations of Christianity in Africa have adopted regional novena practices that include devotional prayers, singing, and offerings with clapping, waving, or shouting. The novena devotion in Ghana includes the blood covering of Jesus after the loud prayers on each of the nine nights, with devotees staining themselves as they see it as a symbol of the blood of Christ.[21]

In West African coastal Christian communities, the novena is a means of asking God through worship and fasting along with traditional rituals.[22] Syncretistic New Age religious practices in Nigeria have adopted the nine-day novena prayer ritual.[23] In Zimbabwe, according to Lawrence Daka – a professor and Zimbabwean Jesuit,

Their [Catholic clergy] healing sessions are theatrical, hysterical, loud and really engaging to the extent that some people fall to the ground and others feel the power of God infuse their bodies. Some of the strong-willed Catholics have taken up novena after novena to seek divine intervention in the face of illness or calamity. In short, there is a great longing and thirst for a religion that will provide quick answers to people’s problems, ranging from adversity to how to deal with sickness and death. Europe and North America[edit]

Devotional and paraliturgical novenas were common in Europe and among European settlers in North America. This included public services such as masses and private prayers using religious objects such as a rosary and images particularly relating to the Virgin Mary. According to James M. O’Toole, a professor specializing in American Catholic history, the period between World War I and the mid-1950s was “the heyday of American Catholic devotion”. This period witnessed the novena devotion, along with the popularity of sodalities, brotherhoods, devotion to saints, fleshless Fridays, holy cards, rosary, cross, and Eucharistic practices.[26] O’Toole says these provided a sense of community identification, especially at a time of mass migration. The novena had strong roots in ethnic neighborhoods, and devotional services had socio-political connections and conveyed a sense of communal security through religious symbolism in a time of uncertainty and fear. As economic prosperity and a sense of national solidarity increased in and after the 1960s, the novena ritual declined and church attendance declined.[28]

Novena practices continue in Eastern and Central Europe. During the communist era, the devout Orthodox Christians in the former Yugoslavia organized the Great Novena under the statue of the Virgin Mary to resist state-enforced atheism, preserve freedom of worship and reassert the Christian heritage of the region, particularly in Croatia. [29]

In Catholic Ireland, according to Professor Gladys Ganiel, devotional practices such as novenas were popular. Cultural acceptance of devotional worship has historically been high, and the Irish, who do not perform novenas themselves, nonetheless respect those who do. Some of their Catholic ritual practices were repressed by the British state in the 18th and 19th centuries, but repression and criticism only increased the Irish’s determination to hold on to their way of worship.[30]

A survey published in the Bulletin of the University of Notre Dame in 1921 states that novena prayers were popular and particularly common among students during exams, when ill, or after the death of a fellow student.[31] The novena seance remains popular in many regions of the United States, such as among Catholics in Louisiana, where novenas are dedicated to Saint Jude and the Virgin Mary. These novenas are prayers that are believed to establish contact between the saint and the devotee, thereby evoking divine intervention in any problem or anguish of concern to the devotee.[32]

Latin America[ edit ]

The novena was an important part of Christianity in the Caribbean and Latin America, both among the native Amerindian communities who converted to Christianity under Spanish or Portuguese colonial rule, and among the various communities that were newly formed from millions of slaves and indentured workers brought to America from various parts of Africa and Asia. The devotional prayers are dedicated to statues of Jesus Christ, Madonna and various saints. They are also part of velorio (awakening) after someone’s death, which involves nine nights of novenas (rezos de los nueve días).[33][34][35]

According to Patrick Taylor and Frederick Case, attendance at Christian services was low except after the death of a loved one or prominent sociopolitical figure and during difficult times such as epidemics or drought.[36][37] Many worship with rosaries in their homes before images of Christ and the Christian saints at a small consecrated altar in their living quarters.[37] Like proselytism in Africa and Asia, missionaries of various denominations of Christianity, including Protestantism, have advocated novenas in Hispanic and Latin American communities as part of their efforts to attract new converts to their ministries.[38]

Colombians celebrate a novena known as the Novena of the Aguinaldos for the nine days leading up to Christmas.

India[ edit ]

Novena are still a common sight in India, especially in the state of Kerala. They are practiced by Roman Catholics and Oriental Catholics (e.g. Syro-Malabar Christians and Syro-Malankara Christians) and by the Orthodox Christians (Malankara Orthodox Christians and Jacobite Orthodox Christians). Novena are common to Mother Mary (recited every Saturday), Saint George (common to the Orthodox and recited every Wednesday), Saint Jude (recited every Thursday), and others.

In Christian communities in the Philippines and Latin America, novena traditions include devotional rituals before a nine-tiered altar with the Holy Cross placed at the top.[39] These are lit with candles, decorated with flowers and other ritual objects. In addition, the space may be decorated with many statues, and these statues typically include those of the Virgin Mary, apostles, and saints of regional importance. On the first day the votive candles are placed at level one and with each day the candles are increased by one level towards the Holy Cross. In addition, each day includes community prayers, hymn singing with music, private and public prayers. Some novenas include congregational feasting, sometimes on the last day, over drinks, refreshments, or processions.

The novena is also associated with funeral rituals. Among Filipino Catholics, the novena of the rosary is a common practice, during which the prayer is recited for nine days, often beginning on the anniversary of a person’s death, and formal funeral services are held at any time up to the ninth day.[8] Elsewhere, the day of burial and burial is timed according to local custom, while the novena continues at the deceased’s home or elsewhere.[41] Novena remains a popular devotional practice in the Philippines.[42] It is observed, for example, in Simbang Gabi just before Christmas. The tradition of the Parol lanterns is also associated with the Christmas Novena procession and the accompanying Panunulúyan pageant. In Pampanga, Christmas novenas were known as lubenas or lubenas pascu.

It is also celebrated in the novena before the Feast of Santo Niño de Cebú (Holy Child) on the third Sunday of January. The first nine days are marked by prayers, supplications and singing.[45] During the main procession in Cebu City, the Santo Niño image is carried through the streets, with many people carrying their own replicas, decorated to their own liking.[45] In Loboc, Bohol, the most popular novena is dedicated to a statue of the Black Madonna, with each service called Gozos, which includes hymns of praise in Spanish and Visayas to the Virgin, dancing, choral concerts, and a feast with fireworks on the final day.[46]

In Metro Manila, popular novenas are assigned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Saint Jude Thaddeus, and the Black Nazarene for the last three days of the workweek.[47] Each novena is associated with a specific sanctuary, all of which have been approved by the Holy See. Some organizations have also started offering the novena rituals online for devotees.[48]

The novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help is celebrated on nine consecutive Wednesdays in Baclaran. The Thursday Saint Jude novena invokes the apostle’s status as patron of the lost cause and is popular with students taking exams.[49] The Friday novena of the Black Nazarenes marks the way of Christ with the cross up to his crucifixion. The image, the novena, and the devotional practices associated with it have a large following. In 2011, over six million Catholics flocked to the Black Nazarene procession in Manila alone.[50]

Melanesia[ edit ]

In 19th-century Melanesia, Christian clergy linked the end of epidemics such as the measles of 1860 and attributed the survival of communities after great disasters to the devotional and grand outburst of prayers for Christian icons, a “fervent novena”.[ 51] In similarly, the novenas to the Black Madonna began in Luboc after Christian clergy similarly credited the island community for surviving after a severe cholera epidemic because they performed devotional prayers to the Virgin Mary (Madonna) during their time of suffering.[46]

After nine days of following their leader’s direction, God answers their prayers by taking action in uniquely dramatic, transformative ways. And the world will never be the same again.

This is exactly what happened with Our Lady, the apostles and the other early disciples of our Lord. After His ascension, they prayed, waited, and perhaps even felt fear of “losing” Him again.

But they also believed and persevered. Finally, on the day of Pentecost, He rewarded them with the coming of His promised Advocate, the Holy Ghost (see Acts 1:1–2:4).

Jesus instructed his followers to pray, and they obeyed. You were not disappointed.

These nine days of prayer can be seen as a model for the Catholic tradition of the novena. A novena (from the Latin novem, “nine”) is a prayer or series of prayers prayed for nine days, hours, weeks, or even months.

It is often prayed for a specific purpose or grace and may be addressed to specific saints for their intercession.

Sometimes non-Catholics, and even a few Catholics, may ask, “Why should we pray novenas?” The short answer is simply that Jesus Christ is calling us to prayer. In fact, he tells us to “pray always, without tiring” (Lk 18:1), to pray persistently.

We will never go wrong if we obey Christ. He promises that prayer works, and he often responds with electrifying results.

But that is only the first, most basic reason why we should pray novenas. A look at the history of this tradition gives ample encouragement to make it a personal practice.

Historical background

Four specific types of novenas have evolved over the centuries: novenas of mourning, of preparation, of supplication, and of indulgences.

Funeral novenas are the earliest form. They probably arose from an early Christian custom of offering masses for the dead for nine days. The universal Church witnessed such a novena in 2005 with the death of Pope John Paul II.

Preparatory novenas are cheerful and forward-looking. They overlook major festivals (like a Christmas novena) or celebrate the founder of a religious order.

Novenas of petition have historically developed among the lay faithful. They most likely originated as requests for good health and eventually became generalized to include requests for other needs as well. For example, a novena to St. Hubert to protect against insanity caused by a dog bite was first prayed in the Middle Ages and is still prayed today.

Many other novenas of prayer addressed to saints with special intent have proliferated over time.

The last type of novena, the novena of indulgence, overlaps with the others. The Church offers partial and plenary indulgences for more than 30 novenas, including one of the most recent, the Novena of Divine Mercy.

If the Church has not only approved and recommended a variety of novenas, but has also designated certain novenas as a requirement for indulgences, we can be assured that these prayers are much more than just an example of popular piety.

The Church recognizes the special value of the novena, the form of which is particularly suited to overcoming certain tendencies of our fallen human nature.

Blessings for the prayer life

We lustful people tend to be lazy. On the other hand, the repetitive form of the novena can serve to intensify and strengthen our prayer life. It forms a habit of persistent prayer in those of us who, left to ourselves, may fall away from prayer despite the best of intentions.

Even fallen people tend to rebel. We resist being told what to do. But following a divine injunction like a novena can be the perfect antidote to such rebelliousness.

By praying a prescribed series of prayers for a prescribed length of time, we are drawn out of ourselves and our vanities and drawn into prayerful concentration and obedience. This keeps our prayer time on track and more focused by following a set form.

A novena can also free us from the mistaken attitude that somehow we are in control of a situation and its outcome through our prayers for a desired outcome.

With its repeated appeal for divine help, the novena acknowledges that we are helpless without God and that control of the situation rests squarely in His hands.

We are like the distraught widow in Jesus’ parable, who repeatedly begged for help from the judge—whose humble, persevering requests the Lord offers as a model of prayer (see Luke 18:1-7).

To suggest that with a novena we relinquish control (rather than play) may contradict common perception. Finally, some novenas actually promise “never to fail” if we follow their instructions meticulously.

Of course, such instructions (always attached anonymously) are little more than superstition. Novenas are not magic and cannot manipulate the Divine Will. After praying in a certain way for a certain number of days, we are no more in control than when we started.

Instead, we receive from God a result of His own choice. Our role is simply to demonstrate faithfulness in our commitment to prayer.

This is not to say that novenas are not powerful, of course. They certainly are, as is every faithfully answered prayer. A novena can even produce miraculous results.

While the specific, “guaranteed” promises associated with a series of novenas need not be taken literally, they do reflect the confidence in this approach to supplication that has grown through the experiences of millions responding to theirs received prayers.

In short, novenas work and we should pray them because they are a valuable form of communion with God and his saints. They flow from faith, and God always attends to the prayers of His believers.

We may or may not get what we want. But when we pray novenas, we praise, prepare, wait and trust. And we will be rewarded, just as Christ’s first disciples were, in whatever way God sees fit.

Perhaps what “never fails” when we pray a novena is that we always grow in faithful perseverance. And again, like the first disciples, we will not be disappointed.

Saint Rita of Cascia

Saint Rita was born in 1381 in Roccaporena, Italy. Although she led a very difficult life on earth, she never let it destroy her faith.

Although she had a deep desire to enter the religious life, her parents arranged her marriage to a cruel and unfaithful man at a young age. In obedience, Saint Rita married him and prayed incessantly for his soul. After almost twenty years of unhappy marriage, he finally had a conversion, only to be murdered by an enemy soon after. Then Rita’s two sons became ill and died after their father’s death, leaving Rita without a family.

She hoped to return to religious life, but was refused entry into the Augustinian monastery many times before finally being accepted. Upon entering, Rita was asked to tend to a dead piece of grapevine as an act of obedience. She obediently watered the stick, and it inexplicably produced grapes. The plant still grows in the monastery and its leaves are distributed to those seeking miraculous healing.

For the rest of her life, until her death in 1457, Rita suffered an illness and an ugly open wound on her forehead that repelled those around her. Like the other disasters in her life, she accepted this situation with grace and viewed her wound as a physical participation in Jesus’ suffering under his crown of thorns.

Despite the fact that her life was filled with seemingly impossible circumstances and reasons for despair, St. Rita never allowed her faith in her determination to love God to weaken.

Her feast day is May 22nd. Countless miracles have been attributed to her intercession.

Saint Jude Thaddeus

St. Judas Thaddeus, Apostle and Martyr

Although St. Jude is perhaps the most popular patron saint of the impossible, we don’t know much about his earthly life.

St. Jude was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and preached the gospel with great passion, often under the most difficult of circumstances. Tradition tells us that he was martyred for his faith while preaching to the pagans in Persia.

He is often depicted with a flame above his head representing his presence at Pentecost, a medallion with an image of Christ’s face around his neck symbolizing his relationship with the Lord, and a staff indicating his role in bringing people to truth respectively .

He is the patron saint of impossible causes since the Epistle of Jude of the New Testament. In his letter, St. Jude urges Christians to persevere in difficult times. Other saints too – notably St Birgitta of Sweden – have encouraged the Church to turn to St Jude with great faith and trust. In a vision, Christ said to St. Bridget, “In keeping with his surname, Thaddeus, the amiable or loving, he will prove exceedingly helpful.” He is the patron of the impossible because our Lord identified him as a saint who ready and willing to help us in our trials.

His feast day is October 28, and novenas are often prayed for his intercession.

Saint Philomena

St. Philomena, whose name means “daughter of light,” is one of the many early virgin martyrs, women killed by the Romans for their faith as well as their vows of chastity. Her tomb was discovered in ancient Roman catacombs in 1802.

Very little is known about her life on earth, except that she died for her faith at the young age of 13 or 14. According to some who had visions of her short life, Philomena was of noble birth and of Christian parents, her virginity to Christ. When she refused to marry Emperor Diocletian, she was cruelly tortured in many ways for over a month. She was flogged, thrown into a river with an anchor around her neck, and shot through with arrows. Miraculously, she survived all these attempts on her life and was finally beheaded. Despite the torture, she did not waver in her love for Christ and her vow to Him.

Since the discovery of her bones, many of Saint Philomena’s followers have experienced the power of divine intercession. The miracles attributed to her intercession were so numerous that she was included in the liturgical calendar solely because of these miracles and her death as a martyr. She became known as “The Wonder Worker”.

She is represented by a lily for purity, a crown and arrows for martyrdom, and an anchor. The anchor found on her grave, one of her instruments of torture, was a popular early Christian symbol of hope.

Her feast day is traditionally celebrated on August 11th. Besides impossible causes, she is also the patron saint of babies, orphans and young people.

Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus

Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea, also known as Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus (“the Wonderworker”), was born in Asia Minor around the year 213. Although raised as a pagan, at the age of 14 he was deeply influenced by a good teacher and converted to Christianity with his brother. At the age of 40 he became bishop in Caesarea and served in that capacity until his death 30 years later. According to ancient records, there were only 17 Christians in Caesarea when he first became bishop. Many people were converted by his words and miracles, showing that the power of God was with him. When he died there were only 17 pagans left in all of Caesarea.

According to Basil the Great, Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus is comparable to Moses, the Prophets and the Twelve Apostles. Saint Gregory of Nyssa says Gregory Thaumaturgus experienced a vision of Our Lady, one of the first such visions recorded.

The feast day of St. Gregory of Neocaesarea is November 17th.

These four saints are particularly well known for their abilities to advocate for impossible, hopeless, and lost causes.

God often allows trials in our lives so we can learn to rely only on Him. To further our love for his saints and to give us holy examples of heroic virtue who have endured suffering, he also allows prayers to be answered through their intercession.

When you are at a career crossroads, changing jobs, or even starting a new career, you may be wondering if there is value in praying for employment. However, the answer to this question really depends on several personal considerations and your existing connection to G‑d.

Let’s face it, prayer for a job often comes at the bottom of a long list of things to consider in your application process.

In general, if you’re thinking about applying for a job, think often about your cover letter, crafting the perfect resume, making sure you have good references, and highlighting the parts of your life that would be best for the job suit.

However, prayer shouldn’t be the last thing on your mind, and I’ll show you why you should consider changing your process.

The digital application process

In my opinion, it used to be easier – as far as applications are concerned anyway. I remember how we did it back before everything went online. You just put on your best pants, a button-down shirt, and a blazer and walked up to an employer and requested an application. You fill out your application, request an interview with the manager and have a chance to make a lasting impression. It was not uncommon to get an on-site interview or even be offered a job the same day.

However, things have changed dramatically. I would say that the digital age has made job hunting more difficult and impersonal. You don’t get a chance to make a lasting impression or explain why you’re the right person for the job. Even if you might not qualify on paper.

In this impersonal process, knowing someone to get your foot in the door is sometimes extremely beneficial.

“If only I knew someone,” you say, “who could help me push my application from the bottom up.”

Prayer as part of your application process

Well, there is someone who can help you. Someone to turn to for help. And they are available 24 hours a day. That someone is G‑d. And the easiest and most effective way to talk to G‑d is through prayer.

When you pray for employment, connect directly with Him. G‑d is waiting and ready to help you with any obstacle you face, and that includes employment.

Praying for employment is also a great way to relieve all of the stress and anxiety related to the job search by entrusting G‑d with your job search process.

Prayer is not just part of the process

A word of caution, don’t expect to just pray and be rewarded with the job of your dreams. Prayer is part of an ongoing relationship with G‑d, it would be inappropriate to begin praying for the sole purpose of finding a job and then ceasing all communication with G‑d after finding a job – or failing to do so.

The nine days commemorate the similar time the apostles spent “with the women and Mary” in prayer in preparation for the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:13-14). The Christian usage dates back to the Roman novena or novendial, a nine-day festival celebrated on the occasion of an omen of bad luck. The term was also applied to the nine days of mourning after the death of the emperor or other notables.

Written in Naples, Italy, in the late 19th century, the 54-day novena is attributed to a young girl suffering from a disease believed to be incurable. Asking Mary for help, Mary appeared to her and promised her healing if she prayed three novenas. The girl did so and was miraculously healed. In a later apparition, Mary specified that the full prayer should have 3 novenas of supplication and 3 novenas of thanksgiving.
