A cord of honor is a badge consisting of twisted cords with tassels at either end, awarded to members of honor societies or for various academic and non-academic achievements, awards, or honors.[1] Usually cords come in pairs with a knot in the middle to hold them together. Sometimes sashes, stoles, or medallions are given instead of cords. They are most commonly worn at academic ceremonies and events. With the cap and gown and (sometimes) the hood, candidates for a high school or college degree have worn these cords at the discretion of the educational institution, but they are usually no longer worn with academic regalia after the academic year in which the honor was conferred. Unlike bonnets and stoles, traditionally more than one cord may be worn at the same time.

At some universities, pairs of honorary medals in the school colors indicate graduates with distinction: one pair for cum laude, two pairs for magna cum laude, and three pairs for summa cum laude. These are in addition to any cords for membership in an honor society.

Graduation day is upon us and it’s time to start thinking about your graduation day attire. Even if your school or college supplies you with clothing and materials for graduation day, there are other parts of graduation clothing that you need to consider. What is graduation day attire?

Simply put, graduation attire, or regalia, is what graduates—as well as certain faculty members—are required to wear on their graduation day. Of course, everyone will have their eyes on the graduates. But teachers, professors and anyone else attending the graduation ceremony must also wear the appropriate attire required by the school.

Most of us are familiar with the traditional hat and dress. But what is graduation attire and what is it made of? We break it down for you.

In general, the main components of graduation attire are:

Additionally, as part of your graduation day insignia, you’ll usually be asked to wear something “nice” under your cap and dress that’s presentable. This can be a dress, suit, skirt and blouse, elegant shoes, heels, elegant sandals, etc. Some students may choose to have their hair and makeup done or their hair cut and shaved. But at the end of the day, you can wear what you’re comfortable with. Keep in mind that you may want to take some photos that show your entire outfit, even though your hat and dress will hide your clothing underneath.

Pro tip: Order your graduation attire ahead of time. You must be measured for your dress. It should be somewhere between your knee and ankle, and you should be able to tell if it’s too long or too short. Once it arrives, try it on to make sure it fits when it arrives in case you need to make any changes before graduation day.

What is a hat and dress?

A cap and gown are the key features of graduation day attire, from preschool through grad school. According to The Washington Post, the cap and dress date from 12th-century Europe. But back then, dresses and bonnets were traditionally worn by the clergy until the students took over the look. Not only did it mark them out as scholars, the clothes kept them warm too!

Eventually, the style was brought to the United States, and students attending then-respectable academic institutions — including Princeton, Brown, and Columbia University — wore the look.

Various councils have met over the years to discuss what would eventually come to be known as modern graduation regalia. According to the Utah Daily Chronicle, the last such meeting was in 1959 by the Academic Costume and Ceremony Committee. At this meeting, certain things such as the style of the sleeves of the gown (pointed sleeves for undergraduate students and longer sleeves for master’s students) were decided.

Ultimately, the decisions were more of a suggestion, and over time individual schools have taken it upon themselves to change graduation attire to their liking. For example, although the committee recommended black robes, many universities choose their own colors to differentiate themselves.

What used to be everyday scholarly attire is now graduation attire. Could you imagine going to school in a cap and gown every day?! But most students would probably say that wearing the clothes for graduation day makes the experience extra special.

What is a graduation cap?

A graduation hood – as you have just read – was commonplace in traditional scholarly attire. In Colorado State University’s History of Academic Regalia, during the Middle Ages, “hoods appear to have served to cover the tonsured head, until they were replaced by the skullcap for that purpose.”

However, these days it’s much more common to see college students wearing a hoodie to class than a hood!

However, in terms of graduation attire, the hood is mostly worn by graduate students pursuing their masters or PhD. A hood is generally not for those finishing their bachelor’s degree (which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be very proud of yourself!). The hood is worn on the back of the gown and may be a different size and/or color depending on the degree you are earning and the college you are graduating from.

What is a stole or sash?

When talking about graduation attire, don’t forget to talk about graduation stoles or sashes. Although the two are clearly different words, they are the same thing. In fact, the sash is considered a “stole of gratitude”. A stole or sash is a piece of fabric that goes over your shoulders and can help you stand out from the crowd of other graduates by choosing from different types of graduation stoles.

The stole or sash can come in a variety of colors, usually representing your academic program/major, but not always. Some people choose to have a stole or sash that represents their cultural heritage, and others may receive a stole or sash with the Greek letters of the brotherhood or sorority to which they belong. Others may receive a sash to honor a family member who played an important role in the student’s life.

There are so many stoles/sashes to choose from these days. And although some colleges have policies on stoles/sashes, many allow you to choose what you would like and/or customize a stole or sash to your liking!

What is a graduation cord?

A graduation cord is similar to a stole/sash in that it is also worn around the shoulders, but it has the appearance of rope. Unlike sashes/stoles, cords are most often geared towards an academic achievement, whether it’s an academic institution you belong to, or an honor society, or to demonstrate that you’ve won some sort of award. The good news is that you don’t have to choose between a stole/sash and cord(s); You can wear a cord and a stole/sash together and you can wear more than one cord.

However, it is not practical to wear more than one sash/stole, although some graduates do.

Graduation Medals

Some graduates may also receive a graduation medal. This is to demonstrate an exceptional honor, e.g. B. Farewell Speaker. Since medals are usually purchased by the school for the graduate, you cannot usually purchase them yourself and add them to your graduation attire. But if it’s awarded to you, then you should definitely show it. You deserve it!

What is the difference between a stole, a sash and a cord?

So you have stoles, sashes and cords. What is the difference?

The first difference between a stole/sash and a cord is their appearance. Stoles and sashes are usually made from some type of fabric, and satin is usually the most common. People receiving a stole/sash to represent their cultural heritage may receive a stole made from a different fabric, such as serape or kente fabric.

Again, you can customize a stole/sash to your liking, be it by choosing the fabric, color or symbols you would like on your stole/sash. Strings, on the other hand, are thick ropes that come in different colors; Some may come in two colors or be worn together as two separate cords of two colors to be coordinated.

The second difference is what they represent. While cords usually recognize an academic achievement, stoles/sashes may more correlate with a club you belong to, your cultural identity, or Greek life. The cords can come in a variety of colors and can be fastened over your stole/sash.

After all, the difference lies in how they are worn. Although both are draped over the shoulders at the nape of the neck, some students may wear many cords without a sash or stole. Some students may wear a sash/stole rather than cords. Some students wear both. It just depends!

Now that you know all about graduation day attire, how do you put it all together? With so many parts involved, it can feel like you’re assembling an entire contraption that requires a lot of mental energy to figure it out. And let’s be honest: Now that you’ve reached the end of your studies, you definitely don’t want any more homework!

Besides that, you don’t want to show up to your graduation party in fake graduation attire. So we’ll help you find your way around.

Step 1: Design your entire graduation wardrobe

To get ready for graduation day, pull out your clothes the night before and place them on a desk or table. You can even do this a few days in advance as the days leading up to graduation can be as stressful as they are exciting. The last thing you want to do is wake up on graduation morning and find that you’re missing a piece of your graduation day attire!

Lay out your clothes in the order in which you will put them on. First your outfit for the day. Next your dress and hood, next your stole/sash and cords. Finally your hat and your shoes.

Pro tip: get a full-length body mirror so you can dress properly and/or ask someone to help you. College friends will long remember preparing for graduation together, and most parents of high school students would be happy to help their teenage children get ready for their special day.

Step 2: Put the dress on

After you’ve dressed and done the bare essentials – like brushing your teeth, drying your hair, shaving, etc. – put on your dress. Most dresses have a zipper in the front, so be careful when putting your dress on. Make sure it sits comfortably and properly on your shoulders; that it is not crooked or hanging the wrong way round.

How to wear your graduation cap

Wearing a graduation hood that attaches to your gown can be another tricky embellishment to add to your graduation attire. A graduation hood follows your dress and needs to be twisted/turned back and forth in a special way to allow the correct colors to show on the back.

Colors are usually determined by your school and degree, similar to a stole or sash. Some hoods have a loop in the front that attaches to a button to keep the hood in place. By the time you graduate from grad school, you should have enough experience donning your graduation regalia that you will be able to attach the hood. However, this might be another case where you might want to call a friend if you need help

Step 3: How to wear graduation stoles or sashes

Now the exciting part; layering on your sashes/stoles. First, take your graduation shawl or sash and hold it in front of you with the letters or symbols facing away from you. Then drape it over your head and rest it on your shoulders. Make sure they are even on both sides and that one side is no longer than the other. Move around a bit to make sure it doesn’t slip off you, too. You can use a bobby pin to hold it in place if needed.

Closing cords are put on like a sash or stole. Wrap it around your neck so it hangs from your shoulders in front of your body. If you’re carrying multiple cords, try layering them on top of each other to keep them from getting tangled.

How to clean the graduation stole or sash

Even though you do your best to keep them clean, sometimes graduation stoles can get dirty—and that can happen even before your actual graduation day. Knowing how to clean a graduation shawl or sash can save you from a little photo glitch on your big day. All you have to do is wash the stole in cold water and iron it with steam!

Step 4: Put on your graduation cap

Now it’s time to complete the graduation day look! Put this cap proudly on your head and make sure your tassel is turned to the right side. While schools may have different guidelines and preferences for graduation day attire, generally students can customize their look by designing a unique stole/sash.

What GPA do you need to get Honor Cords?

The GPA required to wear graduation cords depends on the type of cord and the requirements at each school. Some are issued independently of academic results and represent a different award, such as e.g. graduating from business college within that university’s system or affiliation with a group (e.g. kente honor cords for members of the Black Student Union). Cords may be worn at some schools to emphasize military service.

There are more stringent requirements for honor cords, usually issued in three tiers with their own GPA requirements and cord colors. While these requirements vary from school to school, as do their colors, most schools will establish them using the same overall structure.

Generally, a student with a cumulative GPA of around 3.5 is considered to have graduated with honors or cum laude. Graduating magna cum laude requires varying degrees of GPA, and depending on the school, summa cum laude graduates require a GPA of nearly 4.0 or higher.

For example, the University of Alaska, Fairbanks requires GPAs of 3.5 for cum laude, 3.75 for magna cum laude, and 3.9 (with no grades below A-) for summa cum laude. At the University of Montana, the same respective honors require GPAs of 3.4, 3.7, and 3.9.

Instead of or in addition to GPAs, some schools use percentiles, faculty recommendations, or a combination of these factors to determine award requirements. At Northwestern University, for example, honors are reserved for the top 25 percent of spring quarter graduates, with summa cum laude being the top 5%, magna cum laude being the next 8%, and cum laude being the remaining 12%. The GPAs of these spring grads will then be used as the unpublished cutoffs for honors graduates over the next three quarters.

When ordering the hat, gown, and hood, you must submit your expected degree information and your official major based on your degree request. Your degree and formal course of study will determine the color of your hood, which will be part of your hat and gown order.

Aquinas College awards honors degrees to undergraduate students based on their last completed cumulative GPA for the entire semester. Quad grades in Spring will not be considered. Honors are printed in the final program. Final awards are calculated based on a student’s overall GPA. The final awards are printed on the diploma and official transcript. Graduate students do not qualify for honors.

Each year, students wearing caps and gowns that tie them to hundreds of years of tradition and history march to receive their high school or college diplomas. When you watch a graduation party from afar, you might think everyone looks the same.

However, if you step a little closer, you will see that each graduate is decorated with special details that underline their uniqueness. These items, which traditionally include graduation stoles, sashes, and cords, often have special symbolic meaning.

Graduation stoles and the other elements of so-called academic regalia may not be required by your own college or university – although most schools require graduates to wear a cap and gown. However, many of these additional adornments are given to you as a special honor, and together they tell the unique story of your accomplishments. Read on to learn more about the history and importance of graduation stoles and sashes and how they can turn your graduation day into a memory you will remember forever.

What is a graduation stole?

A graduation stole is a piece of academic regalia worn with the cap and gown. It takes the form of a long, shawl-like cloth, often made of high-quality satin, that you hang around your neck. The stole falls down the front of the dress on both sides, usually ending at waist level.

Graduation stoles offer a way to personalize the “uniform” of the cap and gown. You can design a custom graduation shawl to show off academic honors such as: B. a cum laude or summa cum laude degree. Members of fraternities, sororities, prestigious academic organizations, and other organizations often personalize their stoles to show their loyalty and love for the groups to which they belong. Especially at large universities, many graduates add the name of their major or school (e.g., engineering or fine arts) to their graduation stoles.

While some universities have restrictions on what you can add to your stole, you typically have the freedom to add any symbols or labels through custom embroidery. In some cases, your university may require or require you to wear a graduation robe. Graduates receiving a master’s or doctoral degree wear a hood to indicate their advanced degree (the “hood” actually falls over the back of the academic gown rather than covering the head), but they may also wear a stole to indicate academic to show awards.

The history of graduation stoles and sashes

Graduation stoles, along with the rest of academic insignia, are almost 1,000 years old. Originally, the dresses were based on those worn by Catholic and Anglican priests. Scholars wore them, it is said, to keep warm in underheated academic halls and study rooms. Over the years, scholars began wearing different types of stoles to distinguish themselves from the priests.

In the 14th century, scholars—both professors and students—added mortarboards to their outfits. These square academic hats also distinguished scholars from robed priests, and academic regalia soon became mandatory on campus, beginning with the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Early universities founded in America in the 17th century, including Brown, Columbia, and Princeton, also required academic robes as everyday attire.

From the late 17th century, caps and robes were required for graduation, and the tradition continued even after students and professors stopped dressing up for daily classes.

In the late 1800s, universities came together to determine what graduation robes and other academic regalia should look like. They stipulated that master’s degree caps should show both the color of the school issuing the degree and the assignment of colors to different fields of study. One of the main reasons for introducing a graduation dress code was to make a statement about equality. The idea was that a wealthy graduate and a scholarship recipient who could not afford to attend college without financial help should all be honored equally upon graduation.

The rules for academic regalia, including degree stoles, continued to be refined over the years, with a standing committee formed in 1959 to clarify the rules. Although robes are still generally black, universities have the option of using their school colors instead. Many schools opt for black robes and use school colors in graduation stoles to add a touch of color and panache to the process.

What is the maximum number of Cords of Honor you can wear?
