Are ironing board covers toxic?

Given that heating plastic makes it outgas its toxic fumes, irons and ironing board covers seem odd places to put it, particularly since a non-stick finish is not even necessary for the task. Tetrafluoroethylene fumes can be irritating to eyes, nose, and throat, and can cause breathing difficulties.

Wool Padded Ironing Board Cover

DIY plastic-free ironing board cover and natural wool pad

Last November, I decided it was time to get rid of the small, dingy, and potentially toxic desk ironing board we’d been using for years. And by we I mean Michael. Still haunted by memories of ironing my father’s shirts in the damp basement laundry room with crickets chirping and imaginary mice scampering from corner to corner, I avoid ironing as much as possible. Michael, on the other hand, irons his work shirts every week and I wanted him to have a nice, full ironing board with a non-toxic pad and cover, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.

Get an ironing board for FREE

Knowing that I would start a year not buying anything new, I decided to look for a used ironing board. I posted an ad on Nextdoor, a social network where neighbors can keep in touch about what’s happening in the hood, and asked if anyone had an ironing board they didn’t want.

I would have gladly paid for it, but one of my nice neighbors offered me his old one for free! I just had to lug it home before work one morning. The joints are a little rusty and squeaky, something I’ve wanted to deal with since we got it over a year ago, but it’s sturdy and Michael isn’t complaining, so honestly I’ll probably never get around to it get squeak. Free is free, right?

Looking for a plastic free pad

My next task was to find a base that is not made of synthetic materials (i.e. plastic) and does not contain toxic flame retardants. Here I was willing to spend some money. After some Googling, I settled on the Sonoma Wool Company’s Ironing Board Pad, made from 100% pure wool from locally raised sheep in Sonoma County, CA. Wool is inherently flame retardant and this underlay is thick and durable.

The pad comes as a rectangle. You cut it yourself to fit your ironing board.

My cats had fun with the ingredients.

DIY ironing board cover

Did you know that many ironing board covers are coated with perfluorocarbons? According to consumer advocate Debra Lynn Dadd in her book Toxic-Free:

Today, most iron and ironing board covers are coated with tetrafluoroethylene plastic, better known as Teflon. Given that heating plastic causes it to outgas its toxic fumes, irons and ironing board covers seem like odd places to put it, especially since a non-stick coating isn’t even required for the task. Tetrafluoroethylene vapor may irritate eyes, nose and throat and cause breathing difficulties.

After shelling out some green for the pad, I decided to get smart with the cover. As I googled further, I found instructions on how to make a basic ironing board cover on the Frugal Family Times website. The author uses an old curtain for her cover. I decided to go to Goodwill and pick out a used 100% cotton sheet. I took my friend Mark along as he would be helping me sew the quilt.

Look, I don’t really sew. But Mark has a sewing machine and knows how to use it. In fact, he made really cute reusable bags and backpacks and posted them on his Facebook page. So we carried the sheet back to his house to get to work.

After accidentally buying a fitted sheet, we first sat down on the floor with seam rippers and ripped out the elastic. Little did we know then that this rubber band would be very useful later in the process.

Then Mark got out his ironing board and ironed the creases out of the fabric. I suppose it’s ironic having to use an ironing board to iron an ironing board cover you haven’t already made.

Then we spread the sheet out on the floor, placed Mark’s ironing board on it (his is the same size as mine) and with a fabric marker pen traced the ironing board 3-1/2 inches from the side of the board.

I cut out the ironing board shape with scissors. (Sorry about the constantly changing colors in these photos. It was dark in Mark’s apartment and my camera seemed to have gone a little crazy.)

Mark turned down the edges 1/2 inch and ironed the seam down. (More ironic irony.)

Then he folded the edges down an additional 1 inch, ironed again, then pinned.

This wide seam is used to pull the cord through. Mark went around the seams twice to make sure they were secure. IMPORTANT: Leave a small opening somewhere along the seam. You will need it later to pull the string through.

After all the seams were sewn, I brought my ironing board shaped sheet home. The remaining step would be to get a string and run it through the tube we created with the stitching. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough heavy string for this project. And then I remembered: the leftover rubber band from the sheet! I attached a safety pin to it and fed it through the seams.

The safety pin is under my thumb in this picture. Just knead and pull and knead and pull until it’s all the way around.

I then placed the cover on the ironing board, pulled the elastic taut, and used the same safety pin to secure the ends together under the ironing board. I tucked the rest of the elastic into the ironing board cover.

And voila! All finished!

save money

Even though I got the ironing board for free and the sheets dirt cheap at Goodwill, I still paid a pretty penny for the pad. $59.95 to be exact. Checking Amazon tonight I see a 100% cotton cover and wool base combo for a lot less. The list does not reveal where the wool comes from or where the products are manufactured. But it says both the pad and cover are “untreated and chemical-free.” Despite the fact that EVERYTHING in the universe is made from chemicals and so “chemical-free” is a meaningless term, I think they mean that cotton and wool contain no flame retardants or perfluorochemicals.

It was worth knowing where the wool came from and supporting a local business, but I know not everyone would be willing to pay as much as I did for an ironing board mat. Or to spend time creating a cover. Do you think this is a good alternative?

What kind of fabric do you use for an ironing board cover?

An unbleached cotton or Teflon ironing board cover is the most ideal option.

Wool Padded Ironing Board Cover

When it comes to ironing, many may echo the sentiment – “nobody has time for that”. Of course, some of you still see the benefits of ironing and want to know how to get the most out of your ironing sessions.

A good iron is just as important as a good ironing board. One of the most important yet overlooked items needed for effective ironing is an ironing board cover. It means the difference between quick and easy ironing, or wasting time and effort trying to remove stubborn creases from your clothes.

How an ironing board cover affects the quality of your ironing

Regardless of technique or strength, heat (and steam) is the most important ingredient in ironing for wrinkle removal. With insufficient steam and heat transfer from the iron to the clothes, the creases will not go away. Or at least it becomes a workout.

The right ironing board cover allows for easy transfer of heat and steam from the iron to your clothes. With enough heat, those pesky creases in your clothes are quickly smoothed out.

Poorly fitting or cheaply made ironing board covers don’t allow for this heat and steam transfer properly. And their lack of effectiveness is revealed when you try to iron your clothes on them – your clothes will remain wrinkled.

Added to this is the factor of the materials used to make ironing board covers.

Some fabrics allow for faster ironing compared to others and prevent clothing fabrics from burning or marring. A smoother ironing board cover is generally better because heat and steam transfer more easily through a smoother surface than a rough one.

There is also the type of surface that an ironing board cover has. Some are better or worse than others at keeping your clothes from moving around the board too much, and that obviously affects how far you can remove the wrinkles.

Types of ironing board covers

With everything we mentioned above, you are probably wondering what types of ironing board covers are available and which ones you should buy. Well, there are different options and some will offer you a better ironing experience than others. With that said, we’ll look at some of the better ones.

By material

We recommend ironing board covers made from 100% unbleached cotton or Teflon.

These fabrics are typically stain, water and heat resistant (resistant to heat damage).

Regarding the point above, cotton and Teflon are also heat reflective so they won’t get burned or scorched

They provide the ideal texture (a smoother one) for adequate heat transfer

Cotton and Teflon ironing board covers don’t need to be washed or cleaned every day – they’re easy to care for

These two fabrics are also ideal because they prevent your clothes from moving all over the board

By surface

The ideal ironing board covers have reflective (or “non-stick”) surfaces that absorb heat so it doesn’t linger on your cover

A reflective surface allows for faster ironing and protects clothes from burns

Good ironing board covers also have heavy padding to protect against heat damage and provide extra support

By appearance

Although design and color are not essential, a “decorative” ironing board cover can be visually stimulating

You can choose an ironing board cover that is colored in a light shade, has intricate patterns, or artistic illustrations

So, here’s a summary.

An ironing board cover made of unbleached cotton or Teflon is the ideal option. They offer protection from the “elements” that can damage your clothes (e.g. too much heat) and help remove wrinkles (e.g. extra grip, smooth finish).

Also remember that an ironing board cover doesn’t have to be boring – you can liven things up with bold colours, ornate patterns or pleasing illustrations.

Make sure you choose the right ones based on the materials they are made of and the features they offer so ironing can be pain free. After all, getting rid of wrinkles shouldn’t be entertaining, but it shouldn’t be tedious either.

Which ironing board cover size do I need?

You need an ironing board cover that fits your ironing board. Not sure what size your board is? You can measure your current ironing board yourself or check your receipt to see exact measurements.

Standard ironing boards are 15″ x 54″, but they come in all different sizes. There’s nothing worse than getting a cover that’s too big and slipping all over the place.

How do you secure an ironing board cover?

Most ironing board covers come with something to secure them. These can be clips, bungee cords, or pins. However, if you need something more, you can purchase your own clips to add to your cover.

Things to Consider (Buyer’s Guide)

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your cover. With so many different types on the market, it can be difficult to find the best one. But knowing the key differences can help you decide.

Size The size is the most important thing to consider as the cover definitely needs to fit your ironing board. Too small and it doesn’t fit. Too big and it slips and slides while ironing – this gets really annoying.

Padding A good ironing board cover has some padding. This results in smoother garments because your garments won’t rub against the underlying metal skeleton. It provides a flat, soft iron-on surface.

Material Ironing board covers are available in different materials. Some are simple, like 100 percent cotton, which is ideal. But others are more advanced, like heat-reflective ironing board covers. These return the heat underneath your clothes so it gets ironed on both sides! Look at the material of the cover to see if it offers additional benefits.

Guarantee Finally, check if the company offers a guarantee. If it is, you can have peace of mind knowing it is a quality product. Two years is a good warranty, but some companies offer longer.

They have ironing covered

Say hello to the fun of ironing with one of our top picks for ironing board covers! If you hate ironing, these covers will help you hate it a little less.

Just check the size to make sure it fits your ironing board. Also pay attention to the padding. The thicker the better. Finally, look at the upholstery material. Different materials have different benefits that can help with this task.

How often should you change ironing board cover?

On average, we iron about once a week. This means your ironing board cover needs to be replaced after 3 years.

Wool Padded Ironing Board Cover

A worn ironing board cover is like a sniper: you don’t see him. Therefore, you should definitely note the replacement of the ironing board cover in your smartphone calendar. Do you remember when you bought your ironing board cover? If yes, add three years and write it down in your phone. If not, guess. If your ironing board cover is not replaced in time, you are ironing with a worn cover. The quality of both the cotton top layer and the felt foam layer inside is then very poor. The result: stains or even damage to your clothing.

How do I choose an ironing board cover?

Choose a cover with a heavy felt lining.
  1. Be sure that the lining is thick enough to create a buffer between your garment and the perforated ironing board so that the mesh of the board does not transfer to your garment. …
  2. If you find the perfect cover, but do not like the padding, you can always add your own.

A look at the best padding for ironing boards – ironing board pad

Modern ironing boards come in a variety of designs; They can be traditional standalone boards or wall mounted. Some ironing boards even have their own drawer or cabinet that they fold into when not in use. These modern ironing boards save space and are popular with homeowners who live in smart homes or small apartments.

This article will tell you what to consider when choosing an ironing board cover to stock at your retail store. The padding you choose is important as it affects the functionality of the ironing board.

Things to consider when choosing an ironing board pad

Retailers will often carefully consider consumer needs when deciding what type of ironing board to stock. You will think about how the board is constructed and constricted and whether it is easy to install. Many shopkeepers do not think about what kind of padding is used for the ironing board cover.

If you own a retail business and want to stock a quality ironing board, you need to consider how the cover was made. The best ironing boards have easily removable, padded, heat-resistant, and cotton covers.

Venace makes high quality ironing boards that come with a cotton cover. Their boards are all well-padded and made from heat-resistant materials (buyers can also customize Venace flame-retardant fabrics if needed). Having Venace ironing boards in stock in your store gives you an edge as the company makes high quality, durable ironing boards. You have a choice of foldable and wall mounted boards available.

A good and modern ironing board pad is essential

Your customers want good ironing results because it makes ironing easier and less of a hassle. You must choose a modern ironing board cover with good padding. Most boards come with a cover that is included with the purchase.

However, many homeowners feel they need to upgrade to better coverage after purchase. This is an extra hassle that many people want to avoid. To stand out from your competitors, it would be wise to stock an ironing board with a quality, padded cover.

The best padding is heavy because it allows the cover to hold its shape better than a thin foam-lined pad. The padding of the ironing board covers consists of either foam or felt.

Heat resistant material

Ironing board covers should be heat resistant, as this allows heat to be transferred from the iron to clothing. Some covers have a textured, non-stick surface that aids in the ironing process and allows the iron to move smoothly over clothing without snagging.

non-stick material

It would help if you also look out for an ironing board with a non-stick coating as this will prevent clothes from sticking to the ironing board. Many covers have reflective material in their padding, which allows heat to be transferred back into the clothing for easier ironing.

Unbleached Cotton

Make sure the ironing board cover you choose is made from unbleached cotton. Cotton covers are particularly suitable for people who iron regularly. Ironing on cotton speeds up the process and gives excellent results.

durability

An ironing board cover should be strong and durable, which makes it durable. Your customers don’t want to have to buy new covers on a regular basis, so it’s important to stock an ironing board with a quality cover in your store. Ironing board covers should last a few years.

Scorch resistant

A high-quality ironing board cover is scratch-resistant because it reflects heat. The padding should also have adequate ventilation to allow moisture to pass through when using an iron’s steam function. This has the added benefit of preventing staining.

color and design

Ironing board covers are available in a wide range of colors and designs. While these are fun, they may not be to everyone’s taste. It’s a good idea to stock an ironing board with a neutral colored cover as it will complement almost any decor style.

Appendix

It would be helpful if you also thought about how the cover and padding attaches to the ironing board. A good ironing board cover cannot slip off the board during use. Most covers have a drawstring that allows them to be firmly attached to the board. Some have elastic binding, Velcro, or clips to hold the cover in place. These features make the cover adjustable.

maintenance

A good ironing board cover should be easy to remove for cleaning. Most consumers are looking for a cover that requires little maintenance and is easy to clean. When choosing an ironing board cover, it’s a good idea to look for one that is machine washable. Some ironing board covers should not be put in the washing machine and need spot cleaning.

For sticky spots:

Believe it or not, newspaper makes a great iron cleaner. (You can also use paper towels or a dry cotton towel.)

Start by setting the iron on the highest setting (do not use steam) and run the hot, dry iron over the paper towel until clean. If additional rubbing is required, sprinkle a tablespoon of salt on newspaper and repeat the process. To rinse off residue, once cool, run the iron over a damp, clean towel.

How to remove oily substances:

To remove oil from the soleplate, unplug the iron and allow it to cool. Wipe the entire soleplate with a cloth dipped in distilled white vinegar. Rinse with a damp cloth. If oily stains remain, wipe with a cloth dipped in ammonia. Rinse with a damp cloth. Dry completely.

How to remove stains:

To remove mineral deposits from the soleplate, apply a paste of baking soda and water to the affected area and scrub with a damp cloth. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

If the iron leaves brown water stains on clothes when using steam, it’s time to clean the container. Empty the container completely and fill it up with 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar and 3/4 cup distilled water. Set the iron to full steam and run it back and forth over an old towel until the container is empty. If the iron has a spray option, spray until the water no longer appears discolored. Refill the container with distilled water and repeat the process to ensure all mineral residue is gone.

To avoid future stains and mineral deposits, only use distilled water (it does not contain dissolved minerals) and completely empty the reservoir before storing the iron.

As always, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning your particular iron. If you have misplaced the manual, check to see if the online version is available on the manufacturer’s website.

Can you use an ironing board without a cover?

Whatever you choose, you must cover the surface to protect it from the heat and steam from the iron. Never iron directly on a wooden or stone surface, carpet or bedding.

Wool Padded Ironing Board Cover

If you have an iron but no ironing board, read on for some tips on how to iron your clothes without an ironing board. And if you’re stuck without an iron, here’s how to avoid some wrinkles and creases.

How to iron without an ironing board

A firm, flat surface is the key to successful ironing. You can use a wooden or tile floor, table, kitchen or bathroom counter. A carpeted floor or bed can work well if you’re not looking for sharp creases – these will require a firmer surface. Whatever you choose, you must cover the surface to protect it from the heat and steam of the iron. Never iron directly on wooden or stone surfaces, carpets or bedding.

The ideal underlay is a quilt like Brabantia’s. Ironing blankets are typically made from silicone-coated cotton, which is heat and scorch resistant. Many, like those from Brabantia, are backed with non-slip foam, making ironing a breeze. The blankets are easy to fold and store away.

Even if you have an ironing board, sometimes you don’t just want to set it up for a quick touch-up of a collar, a ruffled hem edge, or when working on a craft project. Keep an ironing blanket in the laundry room and use the top of the tumble dryer as an ironing surface. The ironing blanket is gentle on the surface of the dryer, the metal surface is firm and the height is just right for easy ironing.

If you don’t have an ironed blanket, a very thick cotton towel, preferably white, can be used. If your towels aren’t thick, stack two or three thinner towels to create a base. You should use white or off-white towels to prevent color transfer between the towel and the garment being ironed, especially when using steam.

Now that you’ve covered the ironing surface, you still need to take care of your iron. When ironing, the iron must be put down when moving from one area of the garment to another. If the ironing blanket or cloth isn’t big enough to hold the iron when you need to put it down, use a kitchen potholder or oven mitt as an iron rest. Always stand the iron upright on its base and never leave it flat side down.

What if I don’t have an ironing board or iron?

I can’t promise you a fresh, freshly starched look in your clothes without an iron, but there are ways to reduce wrinkles on clothes without an iron or ironing board.

Start by removing the clothes from the dryer while they are still slightly damp. Hang them up to air dry immediately. By smoothing out the seams and fabrics as they hang, gravity pulls out some of the wrinkles. If the clothes are to be folded, do so as soon as they are dry. Even if you carefully place them in a laundry basket and leave them for several days, wrinkles will appear.

Try not to stuff clothes together in closets and dresser drawers. With tightly packed garments, the weight “irons” in the folds. Discard unworn clothes or look for creative storage under beds or on top of closets to store extra or non-seasonal items.

Invest in a small clothes steamer. Vaporizers can range from commercial models to home use sizes to travel vapers. You’ll find they can remove wrinkles and refresh a garment in minutes.

The Spruce / Taylor Nebrija

If clothes are wrinkled after storage or when traveling, you can also steam remove many wrinkles by running a hot shower, hanging the garment in the bathroom and letting the steam do the work. Or by dampening a white woven cotton towel, wringing out excess water and tossing the towel and crumpled item in the dryer and tumble drying on medium heat for about 5 minutes. After removing the garment, hang it up immediately to let creases fall out.

You can also use one of the many wrinkle removers on the market. Just a quick spritz of Downy Wrinkle Releaser or Dryel 3-in-1 Touch Up Spray and you could be out the door! After spraying, allow the garment to dry before wearing. If the garment is damp and you sit down, you will have permanent wrinkles.

Customers should always be armed with the knowledge that they need to take care of their purchases. Because once a product leaves your retail store, it continues to be associated with your brand reputation. For this reason, customers should be advised of the proper care and maintenance information for ironing board covers.

As a supplier of ironing board covers, we know a thing or two about keeping these products in the best possible condition. Below we provide our top tips that customers can use to learn how to clean an ironing board cover.

Why ironing board covers need to be washed and cared for

Customers may not know it, but washing their ironing board covers regularly is just as important as washing their gym clothes after a particularly sweaty workout. Like most other household items, ironing board covers can fall victim to accumulated dust, dirt, and debris.

Similar to caring for an ironing board, cleaning a board cover protects its integrity and longevity. These products are designed to last for many years (allowing for some wear and tear). So if your customers are looking for detergents they can rely on, they need to keep these cleaning tips in mind.

How to clean an ironing board cover

Most ironing board cover manufacturers, including ourselves, will provide washing instructions on the product label. However, there are some rules of thumb that are worth knowing for your customers.

Set up the ironing board as usual: First set up the ironing board as usual. Customers should use a clean cloth to wipe dust off the ironing board cover and the board itself.

Remove Ironing Board Cover: Next, the customer needs to remove the ironing board cover and pad. In most cases, the cover has a label on the bottom with washing instructions. It is necessary to read this carefully as not all ironing board covers are suitable for machine washing.

Hand washing instructions: When hand washing, any stained or dirty areas must be spot treated. Spray the solution onto identified stains with a mixture of water, baking soda, and vinegar, or with a stain remover. Leave it on for five minutes before gently wiping it off with a damp cloth.

Machine Washing Instructions: If the ironing board cover is safe to machine wash, place it in your washing machine as normal with mild detergent and cold water. Set a delicate or gentle cycle and remove once the cycle is over.

Hang Dry or Lay Flat: Ironing board covers should always be either hung on a drying rack or laid out on a flat surface to dry. Never put it in your dryer – this can damage a cover’s coating. Make sure the cover is completely dry before placing it back on your board.
