You can also add 0.25 cups of lemon juice to get better effect and apply the repellent directly to the pet’s skin.

12. Lavender Oil

Mix one part each of lavender oil with two parts water and alcohol. Then apply this solution to the horse’s skin.

13. Soap spray

Make a spray by mixing one cup of warm water with two cups of white vinegar. Then add four tablespoons of dish soap, stir well, and spray the mixture over the flies. This solution will kill most insects but is perfectly safe for humans, animals, and plants.

14. Insecticides

You can only theoretically use insecticides against horseflies without hesitation. Treatment of these insects in the larval stage is practically impossible, since they mainly live near rivers and streams.

Horseflies (Tabanidae) are large, aggressive flies and very agile fliers. They are among the largest of all fly species, and there are around 3,000 species of horseflies around the world. Females will bite humans and other animals (especially horses and other livestock) in search of blood meals. Brakes and bot flies are also known as “brakes”.

If you find brakes annoying, remember you’re not the first. Ancient Greek literature (Aeschylus) mentions people being driven insane by aggressive horseflies! The Vikings were also suspicious of them.

How do brakes look?

Horseflies range in color from yellowish-brown to dark gray to blackish and are typically around 3/4″ to 1.25″ in length. Their heads are huge in relation to the rest of their bodies, and they are hairy all over, bearing a slight resemblance to honey bees. However, like all other true flies of the order Diptera, they have only one pair of wings covered with light, fine spots.

Horseflies are also known for their large, colorful eyes.

Horseflies are often confused with deer flies, which also commonly bite people. Deer flies also have colorful eyes like horseflies, but are slightly smaller. They have distinctive dark bands across their wings.

Where do brakes come from?

Horseflies are found almost everywhere in the world except at the polar extremes and some islands like Hawaii. These flies prefer warm areas with adequate moisture for breeding, but can also be found in a variety of habitats, including deserts and mountain grasslands.

Horseflies are exclusively outdoor residents and do not feed or seek shelter indoors. Occasionally someone may have accidentally wandered into the home through an open window or door. In this case, a fly swatter or a reliable fly spray for indoor and outdoor use can quickly remedy the situation.

Female horsefly bites are very painful, but worse, these flies can transfer bacteria and blood impurities from one host to another. They can make livestock and humans extremely ill and even lead to reduced growth rate and milk yield in unprotected cattle. The effects are worse if a bitten human or animal has an allergy.

Horsefly bites on humans can appear red and raised (like a welt) and can also cause a rash, dizziness, weakness, and wheezing.

If you, a family member, or a pet is bitten by a horsefly, wash yourself thoroughly and apply a cold compress immediately. As with mosquito bites, scratching makes the itch and the effects worse. Symptoms of the bite should go away within a few hours, but if infection occurs, seek medical attention.

Will horseflies bite your dogs?

The scissor mouth of the female horsefly can cause painful bites not only to humans, but also to your dog, even if the effects and slight irritation are short-term, your pets still face the danger that comes with all biting pests: the spread of bacteria and others blood impurities. Larger dog breeds are most susceptible to horsefly bites, and the areas most susceptible to bites are the abdomen, legs, and neck.

The life cycle of the brake

Female horseflies lay their eggs under gravel or plants near a water source. When the eggs hatch, the whitish, spindly larvae move into nearby water or damp soil, where they feed on small insects and even reptiles. The larval stage of the horse fly can last up to a year, after which the larvae burrow into the ground to pupate. After one to two weeks as a pupa and another 3 to 10 weeks as developing adults, the full-grown adult horseflies hatch. Adults live 30 to 60 days.

Brake problems in suburban areas are less common than in less populated, rural areas where there may be grassy open fields and livestock nearby. Pesticides should ideally not be used until all other methods have been implemented and you still see a horsefly problem.

Common outdoor remedies for flies and other flying insects include citronella candles and UV bug killers. Horseflies aren’t attracted to litter and animal carcasses, but keep your yard as free of standing water as possible to keep them to a minimum (and mosquitoes, too!).
