As the name suggests, D. enigmatica is a mysterious specimen that has not been extensively studied. Resembling a large garbage bag with a thin, broad, delicate bell covered by a network of interconnecting canals, the jelly lives about 3,000 feet deep in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Indian and Southern Oceans. The jellyfish’s size and remote habitat make it elusive, but some incomplete specimens, photos, and observations from dive windows have provided researchers with a picture of the species. And now, thanks to new technology and a recent paper, scientists are getting a better look at D. enigmatica.
David Gruber, a marine biologist and National Geographic Emerging Explorer, and his colleagues used an ultra-sensitive low-light camera encased in a thick glass sphere to capture the jellyfish on camera. Their findings, including details about the innovative technology and what may be the first evidence of a D. enigmatica corpse, were published May 11 in the journal American Museum Novitates.
“With the new technology that we have at our disposal, we could approach these animals in almost complete darkness,” says Gruber, who is also a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University. “To capture bioluminescence, you need a really sensitive camera.”

In the dark
In November, Gruber, University of Rhode Island engineer Brennan Phillips, and their colleagues boarded a survey vessel off the Mexican island of San Benedicto and headed to the open ocean. They brought with them a highly sensitive Canon ME20F-SH camera encased in a polished 13-inch glass sphere designed to protect the recording equipment from the crushing pressures of the deep sea.
The researchers mounted the Canon device on the Hercules remotely operated vehicle (ROV), lowered the mechanism 3.195 below the water surface and controlled it from their vantage point on the boat. (Also see: “Top 10 Compact Cameras for Travelers”)
Given that the ocean covers more than 70 percent of the Earth and contains more than 99 percent of the world’s biosphere, the researchers didn’t look for the elusive D. enigmatica. Rather, the jelly came to them.
“This animal just drifted past the ROV Hercules. We didn’t collect that,” says Gruber. “It’s hardly ever been seen because it’s so fragile and just floats in the water.”
After meeting the sample for the first time, the researchers tracked it with the low-light camera for almost 10 minutes. With the device’s dimmable LEDs set to their lowest level, they watched the bile close, which could be a technique to propel the tentacleless animal upward or help it catch prey. The jelly bumped against the glass at one point, allowing the researchers to get a close-up of the gastrovascular, or alimentary canals, that line his body.
“The only light this jellyfish gets is light from other bioluminescent animals,” says Gruber.

In addition to the live specimen, the researchers also filmed what is likely the first occurrence of a D. enigmatica “jelly fall,” or dead jellyfish, in the benthic region of the ocean, which is about 2,950 feet below the surface. Gruber describes the Jelly Fall as a “monster food package” that creates a “hotspot of deep-sea life.” Many small swimmers depend on these decomposing organisms for nutrients in the nutrient-poor deep sea. During this particular jelly event, stone crabs and Caridian shrimp would flock to the area to feast on the carcasses.
Not too close for comfort
One of the main considerations in the team’s research is to be non-invasive and gentle on wildlife so as not to disturb them in their natural state. By filming D. enigmatica with this low-light technology, the researchers reduced interference and were able to observe the animals in the most natural state possible.
“We miss a lot when we go down [with other cameras] because we’re very loud and very bright,” says Gruber. The Canon allowed researchers to conduct research with just a fraction of the light required to operate other submersibles.
“It’s almost like we’re diving with a little flashlight,” he says. Not only does this expedition provide evidence of D. enigmatica, but researchers may use this camera technology to document other elusive species in the future.
What are the blue bubbles on the beach?
Blue bottles are siphonophores, a weird group of colonial jellyfish. Rather than being a single organism like the jellyfish we commonly recognise, siphonophores are actually made up of several colony members called persons (sometimes also known as “zooids”).

Let’s take a closer look at these mysterious sea creatures.
What are blue bottles?
Blue Bottles are Siphonophores, a strange group of colonial jellyfish. Rather than being a single organism like the jellyfish we commonly know, siphonophores are actually made up of multiple colony members called individuals (sometimes known as “zoos”). These members typically include feeding individuals, reproductive individuals, and biting individuals, among others.
Some siphonophores, like the blue bottle, also have a gas-filled bladder (another person), while others have floating bells similar to jellyfish instead; some have both.

Siphonophores are the most poorly studied of all jellyfish, which in turn are among the most poorly studied of all invertebrates. Many are not even classified, and for those that are, we know next to nothing about their biology and ecology.
In fact, siphonophores have puzzled evolutionary biologists since the 19th century. There has been regular debate as to whether it is an individual or a colony. Like a colony, they share resources and have repeating parts that function independently, but like an individual, they cannot survive if separated.
Oddly enough, siphonophore reproduction is actually much more familiar to us (or at least what we know about it) than most other jellyfish species. The reproductive individuals release eggs and sperm into the water. When they meet, the resulting embryo grows into a tiny blue flask just a few millimeters long. Then as it grows, it adds more groups of people by cloning.
Fascinating and beautiful creatures
The most common blue bottle in Australia is Physalia utriculus, a small relative of the larger and more venomous Atlantic Portuguese man-o’war (P. physalis). P. utriculus typically reaches a bladder length of about 6 cm and conspicuously has only one main fish tentacle, which grows up to a meter long (plus a few other smaller tendrils and fringes). We also have other species, but they are much rarer.
One of the most intriguing things curious beachcombers will notice is that nearly all blue bottles of a single strand have their keel-like crest tilted in the same direction relative to the main body axis, but those of different strands can also be angled in that way.
Out in the open ocean where blue bottles live, each armada (the collective term for blue bottles) has both left-handed and right-handed forms. But when a breeze picks up and drives them to shore, only those sail toward their death whose crest points in the right direction to catch that particular breeze. It seems that this is nature’s way of ensuring that some survive.
Blue bottles are strikingly beautiful. The air sac is pearly blue while the tentacles are intense peacock blue or dark green. Common in animals that live at the air-water interface, this shade of blue is said to protect them from UV damage and possibly aid in camouflage.
Other creatures that inhabit this unusual habitat are the Windward Sailor (Velella velella), the exquisitely beautiful Purple Bubble-raft Snails (Janthina sp.), and the highly unusual Sea Lizards (Glaucus and Glaucilla), the indeed, it is sea slugs that consume and store undischarged jellyfish stinging cells like blue bottles for their own defense.

In the water, a particular blue bottle might not be as easy to spot at the far end of a meter-long tentacle, but they generally travel in numbers, so previous arrivals can be spotted scattered around the beach.
When these organisms are stranded, there’s one rule to avoid getting a nasty sting: don’t touch them! They can continue to emit painful stings long after the organism has died through the mechanical action of their hair-trigger-laden nettle cells.
But in the event of such an encounter, the $64,000 question arises: to pee or not to pee…
Vinegar is the usual treatment for some types of jellyfish stings because of its acidity (or more specifically, its acetic acid content). And since urine is a weak acid, people often assume it’s just as effective. Is that true?
Well no, not really.
Vinegar works well to inhibit stinging cellular discharge in box jellies and irukandjis and some blue bottles, but in others it actually stimulates discharge. For this reason, it is not recommended for confirmed blue bottle stings.
To complicate matters further, urine can be either acidic or alkaline. In species neutralized by vinegar, urine is only about 25% as effective when acidic and can stimulate discharge when alkaline.
So you have to ask yourself: do you feel happy?
A much better treatment for blue bottle stings, and the one advocated by the Australian Resuscitation Council, is to rinse well with seawater to remove microscopic hives, and then use hot water or ice for the pain.

This paper plate jellyfish craft is a great summer craft for an ocean or sea unit study. Both preschoolers and older kids will enjoy creating it and learning about these cute sea creatures.
We love paper plate crafts and combine them with yarn crafts.
The result is adorable crafts that encourage kids to practice their fine motor skills while working with yarn.
Paper Plate Jellyfish Variations:

If you don’t have tissue paper at hand, you can paint the paper plates

I had many pets as a child with my parents and when I was alone before starting a family. I had a dog, a cat, a pair of hamsters and several birds.
But I’ve never been interested in an aquarium. I’m not a big fan of fish.
Nevertheless, I like to visit the aquarium in the ZOO, but not because of the fish. It’s the jellyfish and the seahorses that I find totally fascinating.

How to make a paper plate jellyfish craft
Step 1: First, cut the tissue paper into small squares. Young children who are new to using scissors can simply tear up the tissue paper instead.
Step 2: Draw a wavy line on the bottom of the paper plate and cut along this line.
Step 3: Glue the tissue paper squares onto the paper plate.
Step 4: Use a hole punch to make several holes along the wavy bottom line of the paper plate.
Step 5: Cut strands of yarn of equal length. Thread the twine through the holes at the bottom of the paper plate and tie them together.
Step 6: Glue the googly eyes to the paper plate and draw a mouth with a black marker. For more fun, you can use big googly eyes or glow-in-the-dark googly eyes and even colorful googly eyes.

This paper bag jellyfish craft is an easy ocean themed craft project for kids. The only supplies you need are brown paper bags, muffin cases, markers, craft paint and a glue stick. The only tools you need are scissors and a brush. This craft project makes a great art project for afternoons at home. Because they’re so cheap and easy to make, they’re also great for classrooms or birthday parties.
My son has long been interested in sea creatures. He loves reading books about marine life, watching educational videos and visiting aquariums. His reading skills far exceed my crafting skills, so I love finding simple arts and crafts projects that suit his interests but don’t exceed my abilities. This paper bag jellyfish craft is a quick and easy project that allows it to be creative without taxing my crafting skills.
Paper Bag Jellyfish Craft
Materials:
Brown paper lunch bags
White mini cupcake liners
marker
craft paints
Foam brush
Patterned scissors
Double-sided tape or glue stick
directions:
1. Paint the front of your bag with a mix of colors and let dry.
2. Using your patterned scissors, start cutting the pouch (from the opening) into strips that look like fringes. Stop when you reach the crease of the bag (about 3/4 of the way down the bag).
3. Glue or glue two mini cupcake cases to the top of the bag to make them look like eyes.
4. Draw a dot in each of the cupcake liners to complete your jellyfish.
