My hair has had its signature teal streak for over five years, but to be perfectly honest, I’ve wanted to do it for a number of years before that. I can fully admit that I was scared. Scared it wouldn’t look as amazing as I had in my head, scared I’d get “that look” from people, and honestly a little bit worried I was too old to do crazy hair colors make. Eventually I got out of the way of myself and my head and just did the damn thing. I colored it and honestly hated it the first time. I did everything wrong and tried to put stripes all over my head instead of just the front – plus it was COMPLETELY the wrong color. But after a bit of trial and error, I found that a single chunky strand in front combined with the perfect shade of teal hair was the magic combination, and I’ve been wearing it that way ever since.

One thing I quickly realized when deciding on teal was that you can’t just buy teal. Can you belive that? It does not exist. Being a do-it-yourself girl, I found a way to make the teal hair color I wanted.

What Colors Make Blue-Green Hair Dye?

Now, if you think back to elementary school art class, you may recall that teal can only be made by mixing two primary colors. yellow and blue. The lightness and hue of cyan depends on how much yellow and blue you use.

If your hair is dark, the teal hair can look like a darker shade. The thing is, to get true teal hair you have to start with almost white blonde hair.

How to make teal hair dye

The final teal hair color you get will depend a lot on the brand of hair color you use. As with any product on the market, some brands are just better than others. And I’ve tried pretty much all of them. The same is true when it comes to hair dye. I faithfully use Punky Color. I have tried so many other brands (pretty much all on the market) and I can tell you that Punky Color lasts the longest and has the best shade. The blue is called turquoise and the yellow is light yellow. You must mix these colors with Aussie Three Minute Miracle, an all-white deep conditioning treatment. If you don’t add the conditioner you’ll end up with a super dark version that will eventually fade to teal after a few washes, but the conditioner works like a ‘pastel’ to give you that perfect teal hair instantly. You should not use conditioner that contains dyes as this will prevent your hair from getting damaged.

1 part Bright Yellow Punky Color

4 parts Turquoise Punky Color

Mix well, then apply to DRY hair, leave on for 5-7 minutes and then wash out. If you leave it on longer, the color will darken. Shorter than that and it washes out quicker.

If you’re thinking about dying your hair blue, read this first. These are things I wish I knew before I got blue hair.

Two months ago I decided to dye my hair blue. I thought it would be a fun thing to switch it up. Teal is my favorite color and I’ve always wanted to try it.

So when I got my hands on a semi-permanent hair dye from Sephora, I decided it was about time.

Little did I know that instead of two weeks, I would have blue hair for months.

If you’re thinking about dying your hair blue, read this first. If you decide you want to go for it anyway, just know that it’s not an easy color to ditch and you might hold on to it for a while.

1. Semi-permanent does not mean it will wash out

But the box says it washes out in 7-14 washes! Do not be fooled. Everyone’s hair is different and depending on what you’ve already had on your hair, err bleach, it could take months. Some people’s hair grabs for color more than others. I had bleach on my hair before using the semi permanent color and the blue stuck to my hair like a magnet.

Within the first week I washed my blue hair over 20 times to try and fade it quickly. I wanted a more turquoise/teal color and it came out a deep, deep blue/teal at first.

2. Blue hair color is the most difficult color to get out of hair

Let me repeat that. BLUE IS THE HEAVY COLOR FROM HAIR. I don’t care what color you try, blue is always the most annoying and difficult color to get out of. I’ve been researching and researching how to get rid of blue hair and almost everyone says it’s a lot of work and very hard. You’re not kidding.

3. It turns green

Blue hair eventually turns green. It’s hard to avoid, but easy to fix. A simple purple shampoo will do the trick and keep the green at bay. Just wash your blue hair with purple shampoo every time it turns green. Just don’t leave it on for too long and don’t use it every day.

I’ve tried probably over 10 different purple shampoo brands and my favorite is the Fanola No Yellow. They also have a vegan version!

4. You can’t wear certain clothes (unless you want to clash)

Are you thinking of wearing a red shirt? Unless you want to look like the American flag, think again. In hindsight it would have been perfect for the 4th of July.

If you want to look professional and groomed, it’s best to dress in neutral colors. I wear black, white and cream. A neutral colored wardrobe will compliment and accentuate blue hair.

5. It fades quickly at first

If you’re hoping for a deep, bright blue color, good luck trying to keep it that way. It fades pretty quickly in the beginning. The first few times I washed my hair, the color always got a little lighter. I couldn’t keep it as deep green as the first day I dyed it. Which was a shame because it looked amazing on day one. It was a really pretty dark teal.

If you want to keep it as blue as possible for as long as possible, it’s best to barely wash it. Stay away from dandruff shampoo as it helps fade blue hair and keep it vibrant with a purple shampoo.

6. It can be very harmful

This one is more geared towards getting rid of the blue. It is extremely damaging to do multiple color corrections and bleach washes to try and get the blue out. I’ve been growing my hair out for a few years and it was super healthy before I dyed it blue. After all the things we’ve done to get rid of it my hair is a bit thinner and definitely more damaged.

Basically, conditioners and hair masks are your best friends.

If you still fancy blue hair, by all means go for it! I loved having my blue hair and think it is such a beautiful color when done right. I’m sick of it and I’m in the process of getting rid of it, but it’s been difficult.

Luckily my mom is a hairdresser and I didn’t have to spend a fortune in a salon. Getting rid of it and figuring out how to go from blue to blonde was a challenge. So far we have color corrected it 3 times, done 2 bleach washes and bleached my roots. Bleaching the roots should blend it with the light turquoise it became after everything else. I’ve also tried Dawn washing up liquid mixed with baking soda and even tried vitamin C tablets mixed with dandruff shampoo to lighten the blue.

DIY: How to Dye Dark Hair to a Blue Based Turquoise!

So yeah, if you’ve been keeping up with the blog and my Instagram, you should already know that my hair has gone from purple to completely turquoise! I for one am delighted that I ditched the turquoise ombre and full headed purple and went for the full mythic look instead!

I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time but thought I’d make it easier for me to get started by going with the ombre to start with. The plan was then to walk the full nine meters, but I actually got a little bored with turquoise and went purple at first. The first time I saw my purple barnett in the mirror, I realized my stupidity! I dreamed of mermaid turquoise tones again.

However, as much as turquoise is my absolute favorite color in the whole wide world, getting it right on your hair is extremely difficult. Finding the right balance is difficult, especially if you prefer bluish turquoise to greener hues.

It took me a total of 3 days, yes THREE DAYS to get the color just right. That’s mainly due to the need to take a break from the hair-killing bleach. My super dark hair needed to be bleached twice so a break was essential!

I put this post together as a little guide to the process and products I used to achieve my look, including photos of my hair at various stages afterwards.

HERE WE GO:

DAY 1

BLEACHING

HERE I used Jerome Russell Bblonde High Life Powder Bleach mixed with Jerome Russell Bblonde Cream Peroxide 12% 40 Vol. To know how to bleach I would suggest reading my previous post about it. No photos of it in this post as I threw away the package immediately after use!

In this post I mentioned how I bleached my hair to do the ombre, however in this case you apply it all over. I have to warn you, you have to be extra careful around the root area. And make sure you don’t rub the bleach into your scalp, the last thing you want is a chemical burn! A good tip for this is to apply petroleum jelly around the ears and hairline to protect these areas.

If you’re looking for a much bluer turquoise, you’ll need the bleach to bring your hair down to a platinum blonde color (i.e. no yellow at all!). Just think back to elementary school: Yellow + Blue = GREEN! If your hair is still yellow after 90 minutes of bleaching, rinse, sleep on and bleach again the next day.

In my case, my hair was a pale yellow blonde color. As well as rinsing out the bleach at the end of the 90 minutes, I applied a protein treatment to my hair to strengthen it before lightening it again the next day. I will do a post about this in the future, because otherwise my hair would definitely have snapped off on the left, right and in the middle!

DAY 2

BLEACH ROUND 2!

L’Oreal Paris Feria by Preference in Extreme Platinum Power

Since my hair wasn’t quite the shade I needed for my blue-dominated turquoise, I used L’Oreal’s Paris Feria by Preference in Extreme Platinum Power. It comes with a sachet of bleach powder, a handy platinum blonde dye, some oil and peroxide. I’m not sure what % peroxide they deliver, but since it claims to lift 8 shades of color I would assume it’s 12%.

As with the first bleaching, I coated my ears with a little Vaseline to protect them. I then mixed all of the above “ingredients” in the bottle that came with it and applied it all over my hair, again paying attention to the scalp. This time I let the bleach sit for 50 minutes because that’s how long it took my hair to reach the platinum blonde color I wanted.

After that I rinsed my hair well and made sure to get rid of all the bleach mixture. Another clever little tip here is to towel dry your hair carefully and apply the purple conditioner (that’s also included in the box). The violet conditioner attacks and neutralizes any remaining flashes of yellowish colour.

At this point my hair looked pretty much how I wanted it, there were still a few small light yellow spots, but that didn’t bother me. The choice here is to accept it or bleach again, but to be honest, don’t think my hair could have taken another beating! Also, tiny little speckles add a bit of depth to the end result.

The next step is to reapply the protein treatment. Typically, you should only use one of these treatments every 4 to 6 weeks, as too much protein can cause your hair to break. But my personal opinion is that after two rounds of intense bleaching, my hair needed every little help it could get!

DAY 3

TINT

L – R: Fudge Paintbox in White Shade of Pale & Manic Panic Amplified Formula in At omic Turquoise

I first started using Fudge Whiter Shade of Pale when I was a hairdresser. It was a treat for clients suffering from an acute case of canary yellow hair or copper stings. It is essentially a conditioning purple toner.

My hair looked very platinum blonde, but I’m nothing but a perfectionist and there were a few areas I thought could tone down a bit. So I applied it directly to dry hair and let it sit for an hour. I then applied Manic Panic’s ‘Atomic Turquoise’ right on top, tied my hair in a bun and left it on for a whole day!

At the end of the day I gave my hair a good rinse and voila: Blue Turquoise Hair!

I think it’s important to mention that since dying my hair this color I’ve limited shampooing to only 3-4 times a week to slow down the fading process. There’s nothing worse than going through all that effort to get your hair the perfect shade only for shampoo to wipe it out in days. With that in mind, do not use Head & Shoulders. It’s like nail polish remover for your hair!

On my non-shampoo days I tie my hair in a topknot or spray it with Fudge’s Sea Salt Spray to give it that extra bit of texture and let it soak up some of the natural oils. I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again: use SLS-free shampoo, it keeps the color longer!

WEEK 1

The hair looks incredibly vibrant.

WEEK 2

The turquoise begins to fade into a pastel blue color.

WEEK 3

As you can see, the hair fades from a vivid blue-turquoise through light pastel blue colors to a sort of mint blue. I love the way the hair progresses through the shades as the color starts to fade, but eventually it needs another fill in. Otherwise, the next stage will start to look like dishwater!

But you know what, I LOVE my hair!

I like it at this pastel stage, you can see a few yellow-green flecks all over it, entirely due to the bumps from bleaching. I think I’ll keep it like this for a while, probably until I have another dream of being a mermaid in Dubai and wake up feeling full of life again!
