Why replacing car keys is getting more and more expensive

Posted on December 17, 2020 by A-1

Everything is getting more expensive these days. It’s gotten to the point where you almost have to take out a second mortgage to be able to afford the latest smartphone. While it’s true that some things get cheaper as technology advances, that doesn’t apply to essential items like car keys.

Automotive safety technology has advanced tremendously in recent years. This is accompanied by the costs for production. Let’s take a look at why it’s so expensive to replace your car keys these days.

Types of car keys

The first thing to note is that not all car keys are expensive to replace. You can have a basic key duplicated or replaced in many places for as little as $50. The cost depends a lot on the type of car key and the brand. The more advanced the key (or car company), the higher the cost. Here’s a high-level rundown of the different types of car keys you’ll find today, ranked by their tendentially high price (including rough cost estimates):

Mechanical Keys: Simple keys used in older car models or only for door or trunk access. These are the cheapest to duplicate and replace.

Programmable remotes: not really buttons; They are buttons that you use to lock, unlock, set the alarm and/or open the trunk of your car. Remote Control / Button Combinations: aka Switchblade button; a combination of remote control and key. Given the dual capabilities of these devices, the cost of duplicating or replacing takes it up a notch.

Proximity FOBs: remote control-like devices that can start the car or unlock the doors when you are near the vehicle. While all of these options can vary widely in price for different makes and models, proximity FOBs have the biggest differences between vehicles. The best thing to do here is to get an offer specifically for your vehicle.

Factors in Car Key Cost

As you can see above, the cost of car keys increases with technology. Simple keys and fobs do not have advanced mechanics and can be duplicated with relatively simple machines or tools. Modern keys have advanced transmitters, codes and programming, resulting in higher costs as they take more time to duplicate and the actual hardware is more expensive. Finally, when you are dealing with a luxury car brand, you have to expect higher costs.

The best way to replace car keys

Greater cost than all of these options if you lose all copies of your car keys. In that case, you may need to replace the locks, which can easily set you back $1,000 or more. It’s best to make sure you have multiple copies of your keys and backups of them. You should also consider hiring a professional auto locksmith instead of going to a dealership as you will be able to get an affordable product that is still of high quality. (Just think twice before going to KeyMe or a similar key copy solution, which you can’t do anyway when dealing with an advanced key.)

When you need new car keys, we’ll work with you to provide a solution that’s both useful and affordable. Contact us today for a consultation.

How to get replacement car keys if yours are lost

Lost car keys: what to do? Monday 03 January 2022 at 09:00

Lost car keys? Don’t have a spare part?

Thousands of UK drivers every year find themselves in the situation of lost car keys with no replacement – unable to leave home for work, school or travel – or stranded in a car park or side street with no access to their car and to start it.

In addition, lost car keys can incur costs!

Paying a locksmith to replace a key system can be expensive – and for some older vehicles, a replacement system is so expensive that the car could actually be a total loss.

If you’ve lost car keys and don’t have a replacement, consider the following before contacting a locksmith.

Lost car keys: what to do?

Check your car insurance

Your regular car insurance may cover the cost of replacing or repairing your keys, although such car key coverage may only be available with extended insurance policies or by purchasing supplemental car key insurance.

If you’re unsure if you have car key insurance, contact your insurer to find out.

Your car insurance may cover the cost of a locksmith being called to gain access to your car.

Note that each claim may affect your no-claims bonus and therefore may not be an economical option in some cases.

Standalone Key Coverage Policy

A number of insurers have specialized in independent insurance cover for lost car keys.

If you have a standalone car key cover, contact your provider to make a claim.

Check your puncture protection

Does roadside assistance cover lost keys?

Some auto breakdown insurance policies include lost car key replacement coverage, but they are often more expensive premium products.

Some vendors may offer a key cover as an optional add-on.

A good roadside assistance provider will cover the cost of travel and mileage to their operating base – or closer to your home address as the case may be – in the event of key loss, damage or theft, or if you have left your keys locked in your car.

Some roadside assistance policies will arrange transportation for you and all passengers and may cover collection of spare keys from your home.

Key Assist from Start Rescue

Start Rescue provides essential support at all levels of roadside assistance.

If you lose or break your keys, Start Rescue will pay the call and mileage back to the salvage company’s base or your home if closer.

Buy puncture protection

Call a locksmith

If you don’t have the above options open to you, your only choice might be to call a locksmith to replace your car key.

This will likely cost around £200 but could be more depending on the make of your car.

In addition to the cost of losing the car key, replacing the car key can take some time.

A particular locksmith may not stock blank keys for your particular car. In this case, they may have to order a new key, which can take a week or more.

If necessary, the lost car key must be reprogrammed by the locksmith, i.e. removed from the vehicle database.

Car Key Replacement: High Street, Cellular and Online Providers

Some high street locksmiths claim to offer car key replacement services for significantly less than garages and dealerships, as do some mobile and online locksmith companies.

Mobile locksmiths should be able to come to your location.

These services may be worth checking if you lose your car keys in the UK.

How much does a replacement car key cost?

The cost of a replacement car key will vary depending on the make and model of your car and the type of key you need.

As stated above, the replacement car key cost also depends on your situation and where you intend to buy your new keys.

The average cost of replacing a car key is around £300.

How long will it take to receive my new car keys?

How long it takes to receive your replacement car keys depends on the type of car key and, as mentioned above, the make of your car.

The age of your vehicle also plays a role; Older cars may need to have their ignition cylinders reconfigured.

Keys with transponder chips

Since 1995, most car keys have been equipped with a transponder chip.

Such a key unlocks the car doors and disables the car alarm system while the car recognizes the transponder chip, so the engine starts as soon as the car key is inserted into the ignition switch.

spare emergency key

For emergency car key changing, spare emergency keys will open your car doors and turn off the alarm, but do not allow the engine to start as they lack a transponder chip.

These are far cheaper than a complete key, but since they can’t start the engine, they’re not a long-term solution.

Damaged car keys: need a new remote control?

Some car keys have a transponder and key slot, but have a separate remote control to gain access to the car and arm/disarm the alarm. Other keys are all-in-one key fobs that combine key shaft, transponder and remote control in one device.

If your car key is damaged, you may only need to replace the key shaft, which is a lot cheaper than replacing the transponder.

What information do I have to give the locksmith?

When arranging car key replacement for damaged or lost car keys, you must provide the locksmith with the following information:

What happens if you lose your only key fob?

If you lose it: You could call a locksmith, who can come and make you a new key on the spot. In some cases—an unusual or older vehicle—a locksmith may not be able to help. You might need to buy a new ignition lock cylinder and key from the dealer or an independent repair shop.

How to get replacement car keys if yours are lost

Not so long ago, misplacing – or worse, losing – your car keys wasn’t a big deal. You may even have a spare part attached to your car in a small box that attaches to the inside of the bumper. But as cars have become more technologically advanced, so have their keys, which can be more expensive than ever to replace.

Depending on what model and year you drive, replacing a lost or stolen key can take multiple steps and hundreds of dollars, says Richard Reina, training director at CARiD. If you don’t have a second car key, have a backup copy made and keep it in a safe place.

Here are the top five types of car keys, and Reina’s suggestions on what to do if yours is lost.

Traditional car key

The standard auto industry key is purely mechanical; Put it in an ignition cylinder and twist it to start your car.

If lost: call a locksmith who will come by and make a new key for you on site. In some cases – an unusual or older vehicle – a locksmith may not be able to help. You may need to purchase a new ignition lock cylinder and key from the dealer or an independent repairer.

car keychain

The first fobs were add-ons and intended for convenience. You can lock and unlock your vehicle, but you still use a traditional key to start the car. The key can also be used to unlock the doors.

If you lose it: if you just lose the key fob, everything is fine. You can still use your key to unlock and start your car. Keyfobs are readily available as aftermarket products and are easily programmable; You don’t need any special tools. You can find them at dealerships, auto parts stores, or online. They’re also inexpensive (less than $20).

Car keys and switchblade keys

After the detached key fob was released, automakers combined the two into a mechanism that locked and unlocked a vehicle with a spring-loaded key that could be folded in like a switchblade.

If you lose it: An aftermarket switchblade key fob is more expensive than a basic key fob and costs about $125 to replace. These are easiest to find at a dealer where they can be cut and programmed in the field; They are also available online.

transponder key

Transponders were developed in the early to mid 1990s to be a better anti-theft device. Transponders are ignition keys that have a plastic head with a computer chip embedded in it; They rely on the wireless connection between your key and the car before activating the ignition.

Lost: If you do not have a spare key, you will need to have your vehicle towed to the dealership and show proof of ownership before you can purchase a key. (If one has to be ordered, the wait can be several days.) The dealer then has to electronically pair the new computer chip to your vehicle. In addition to towing fees, the replacement key costs $200 to $250.

smart key

Also known as “keyless ignition,” a smart key is associated with vehicles that have a start button on the dashboard. Smart key technology works via a proximity sensor in the vehicle that automatically detects when the smart key (which isn’t a key at all, but a paired sensor) is nearby. He then unlocks the vehicle and starts it by pressing a button.

If you lose it: As with the remote control key, if you don’t have a spare key you will need to tow your car to the dealer, then order a key (if the dealer doesn’t have one in stock) and have it paired with your vehicle. The most expensive of the keys, these can cost up to $320 to replace plus a possible towing fee.

If you ever need towing, just call GEICO Roadside Assistance – always available on the GEICO Mobile App. Add ERS to your policy today!

Can I start my car without the fob?

Automakers know that your keyless ignition may need to work if the fob dies, and the system has been designed to work even with a non-functioning remote. Some cars are equipped with a means of starting the car manually, and some have a backup built into the key fob that works without a key.

If you’ve just locked yourself out of your car with a dead key fob, we may be able to get you going again.

Remote control fobs are great until they fail. If this is the case, you may not be able to get into the car. If you then get in, starting the car can be thwarted by a dead START button. We have tons of solutions here, so find the one that best suits your scenario.

These are the most likely solutions:

Replace the battery

If your key fob died in a mall parking lot, you might be in luck. The battery may have failed, and getting it working again can be as easy as replacing it.

To access the battery, you must open the key fob. Usually you need to use a coin or a small screwdriver to open the battery cover. The battery looks like a silver button. Look for the numbers on the battery and match them to a replacement battery.

Unlock the door remotely

Many manufacturers offer remote entry services that you can bring into the car if your key fob is disabled or you have locked your keys inside. If your car doesn’t have an advanced remote entry system, roadside assistance can still get you inside. All of these services require prior setup and typically require a PIN.

To access these services:

Audi

The myAudi app allows Audi owners to use remote unlocking services when the key fob is dead or the key is in the car. You can find out more about the app and register on the Audi website.

Acura

If you don’t have any of the services described above, you can still try calling roadside assistance. The number is usually found on the side windows and in the owner’s manual.

Unlock the door manually

Aside from that, try holding and pulling your dead key fob against the driver’s door handle. Sometimes there’s just enough juice left in the battery to unlock it at close range.

If that fails, look closely at the remote control. If it’s wearing a leather jacket, remove it. Almost all car manufacturers hide a small mechanical key inside the key fob. There is usually a small catch that allows the spare key to pop out. If you can uncover the small mechanical key, you can then insert it into the lock hole in the driver’s door and you’re in.

How to start a car with a dead key fob

Once inside, it’s actually pretty easy to start the car. Automakers know that if the key fob dies, your keyless ignition may need to work, and the system was designed to work even with a non-working remote. Some cars are equipped with a way to start the car manually, and some have a backup built into the key fob that works without a key.

Even if your car has keyless entry, you may not have noticed that there is a key slot somewhere on the steering column. For example, many Mazda vehicles are equipped in this way. The “switch” you turn is actually a plastic cap that pops off, revealing a key slot underneath.

If your keyless entry works with a START button and there isn’t a mechanical key slot, there is still a way to start the car. Use the key fob to press the START button. Some manufacturers have a backup system that allows this method to work if the key fob’s battery dies. For example, many newer Fords have a pocket in the center console or a slot on the steering column that allows you to insert the key fob yourself and start the vehicle.

Automakers have moved away from the traditional key for a number of years, and there isn’t a scenario they haven’t seen until now. If you are locked out or unable to start the vehicle, visit the OEM website or contact roadside assistance. They’ll get you back on the road in no time.

If your car is less than five years old, you’ll likely need to go straight to a dealer who has the expensive equipment needed to program a new key fob.

However, if you have a slightly older car, you can probably save money by purchasing an aftermarket key fob, according to Consumer Reports. Search trailers online based on your car’s make and model. CR found a number of options at Amazon, Walmart, and online auto parts stores for $200 less than at dealerships.

Many of the less advanced pendants can be laser cut and programmed by your local mechanic or locksmith, but if you’re up to the challenge, programming it yourself can be a fun project.

All instructions can be found in the user manual. Just note that most customer programmable key fobs require two currently working keys to program the new one.

If you end up needing a new key fob from a retailer, the good news is that the process is fairly quick, typically only taking 15 to 30 minutes. For added convenience, a mobile locksmith can replace many fobs and program and cut keys right in your driveway.

And did you know that your keychain hides a secret? Cars with push button start systems usually have a mechanical key hidden in the key fob so you can still unlock your door if the car or trailer battery dies. Some cars have an obvious key slot on or behind the door handle. On others, a plastic cap hides the key slot underneath.

How to get replacement car keys if yours are lost

You’re halfway out the door when you realize you don’t have your car keys and they’re not in the usual place.

After 20 minutes of frantic searching, it begins to dawn on you that you’ve lost your car keys. What’s happening now? We are here to help.

I can’t find my car keys! What should I do?

First, try not to get angry. Panic and stress only cloud your thinking and you’re less likely to see them, even if they’re under your nose.

It’s not our job to tell you how to look for things, but some useful places to look are:

Coat and trouser pockets – don’t forget those in the laundry basket!

In your gym bag/purse/weekend bag or the bag you took out last night

Designated “garbage dumps” – places where clutter normally accumulates

kitchen counters

dining and bedside tables

Along the back of the sofa

The 4 main types of car keys

mechanical keys

These keys are the most basic type and are generally used on older cars. They are cut from metal and can come in the form of a flip key where the fob has a button to push the key out.

Since the key is cut from metal, it is easy to make a copy.

Radio remote control with integrated keys

This key can be multifunctional. There are 2 ways to use it – either by pressing the remote button or by using the mechanical key.

Keyless remote control

Remote car keys have buttons on the fob that allow you to lock and unlock your car up close. They are mostly battery operated and usually need to be plugged into the ignition to start the car.

transponder key

These keys can have an electronic microchip that sends a series of codes to your car. You shouldn’t have to put the key in the ignition and be able to start the car when it’s in close proximity.

However, be aware that these keys are likely open to keyless car theft.

Replacing these keys is a bit more complicated as a new key needs to be programmed to match your car.

If you lost your old key, the locksmith will need your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to program the new key. This can be found in front of your steering wheel in the lower left corner of the dashboard.

How do I get spare car keys if I lose mine and don’t have a spare set?

If you’ve looked everywhere and still no sign of your keys, you have a few options for replacing car keys.

Buy replacement car keys from the dealer

Buying a new set of car keys from your dealer is fairly easy. But it might be the most expensive and time consuming option.

Call a locksmith

A cheaper option is probably an auto locksmith who can reprogram a new car key for you without needing the original. Get some quotes from local locksmiths and see if you can find one that fits your budget.

If they have a blank key that matches your car, they can replace your key much quicker than going to a dealer.

Many auto locksmiths offer a mobile service, which means they come to you. They should be able to cut you a replacement key and reprogram a remote control car key.

You should also deprogram the original key to make it useless if it falls into the wrong hands. Even damaged locks and keys can often be repaired.

vehicle breakdown service

You can also call your breakdown service. However, there may be times when you have to wait a long time or find that they do not have the proper car key cutting equipment.

It’s probably quicker to call an auto mechanic instead.

garage

Your local repair shop might be an obvious first port of call, but it’s luck if they have the right equipment. You may also be charged for the use of diagnostic software.

How much do replacement car keys cost?

Replacement car keys can cost between £130 and £230 each, which is no small chunk of change.

The actual cost – as well as how long it takes to replace – will depend on the model of your car and the type of key you need.

If you own an Audi or Mercedes, these keys can be the most expensive to replace. Valid car key coverage, which can be part of your car insurance or added as an extra, can therefore help cover the cost.

What do I need to get a replacement key?

Usually you need:

Some sort of ID that could be a driver’s license

Make and model of your car

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of your car

Your V5C logbook to prove you own the car.

What do I do if I locked my keys in the car?

If you don’t feel like breaking into your own car, you can call your roadside assistance if you have breakdown cover.

Depending on how busy they are, it may take them a while to get to you. You should try to open the car and get the keys. If that’s not possible, they will probably call a locksmith, but you may have to pay for it yourself.

Can I claim replacement keys from my car insurance?

Some car insurance policies may cover spare keys as part of their policy. Some others may have a car key cover as an optional extra.

Check your policy documents to see what is covered. If you can’t find your documents, don’t worry. You should be able to quickly replace your missing car insurance paperwork.

There may be some restrictions on availability. For example, a deductible may be payable or coverage may only be available for certain types of policies.

Contact your insurer to see what your options are.

How to protect yourself from lost car keys

Get a key finder

If you don’t want to lose your keys again, you can use a key finder. If you can’t find your keys, use the Connect app to activate the fob. It should whistle to tell you where the keys are.

Cut off a spare car key

As long as you still have the original, it might be worth cutting up a spare car key. Your local key cutter may specialize in car keys, so it might be worth checking there first.

Key cutters Timpson boast that they can make replacement car keys that are 20% cheaper than going to a car dealership.

How much you pay for a replacement part depends on how sophisticated you want it to be.

If you want a simple key with no remote capabilities, this should be relatively inexpensive. But if you want an exact replica of your key with all the bells and whistles, it might be a bit more expensive.

It’s good to weigh your options before making a decision.
