Do Peugeot 208 hold their value?

The Peugeot 208 is an attractive prospect as a cash buy, with a brochure price that’s lower than most of its obvious rivals, including the Audi A1, Skoda Fabia and Volkswagen Polo. That said, the 208’s resale values aren’t predicted to be as strong as those cars’, so it is likely to be worth less after three years.

When did they stop making Peugeot 208?

In mid-2018, the three-door model was discontinued. In 2019, Peugeot ceased the production of the first-generation 208 in Europe.

The Peugeot 208 is a microcar (B segment in Europe) produced by the French automaker Peugeot. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012 and positioned below the largest 308, the 208 replaced the 207 in 2012 and the car is currently in its second generation.

First generation (A9; 2012) [ edit ]

motor vehicle

The first 208 models were three-door hatchbacks produced in November 2011 at the company’s new plant in Slovakia.[3] In June 2012, when five-door hatchbacks became available, production of the 208 also started at Peugeot’s French plants in Mulhouse and Poissy.

Developed under the code name “A9”, the 208[5] is based on the PSA-PF1 platform and is said to be 173 kg (average 110 kg) lighter than the 207. 6] and still offer more space than its predecessor.

The trunk offers 285 L (10 cu ft) (VDA) of space, 15 L (1 cu ft) more than the 207, and rear seat legroom increases by 5 cm (2 in). The design was directed by Pierre Authier, with Sylvain Henry as exterior designer.

The interior design is by Adam Bazydlo and the paint and fittings by Marie Sanou. The car features a tablet computer-like screen and a panoramic glass roof surrounded by LED lights.[7] The car is relatively aerodynamic with a drag coefficient Cd of 0.29.[8]

A high-performance 208 R was intended to be positioned above the 208 GTi in the lineup, but was never released.

The three-door was discontinued in mid-2018.[10] In 2019, Peugeot stopped producing the first generation of the 208 in Europe. The first generation 208 was produced in Brazil from January 2013[11] to March 2020, when the second generation model imported from Argentina was released.[12]

Engines [ edit ]

Peugeot 208 facelift (5-door)

All petrol engines meet the Euro 5 standard and the diesel engines have CO 2 emissions of 99 g/km or less. In addition to the four-cylinder petrol engines inherited from the previous model, the 208 will be offered from September 2012 with two new three-cylinder units with variable valve timing – the 1.0 VTi (68 hp) and the 1.2 VTi (82 hp).

The 1.0 comes with an advertised fuel consumption of 4.3 L/100 km (66 mpg -imp; 55 mpg -US ) and a CO 2 emission figure of 99 g/km. A 1.2L three-cylinder is available with a turbocharger designated PureTech 110 S&S (available on the GT Line models and the Allures) or without the designated PureTech 82 S&S (available on the Active, VTi or XS).

This engine is paired with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The 208 GTi is equipped with a 1.6-liter (1,598 cc) turbocharged four-cylinder in-line Prince petrol engine producing 197 hp (147 kW) at 5,800 rpm and 203 lb⋅ft (275 N⋅m) of torque at 1,700 rpm and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

This first GTi model has since been replaced by PeugeotSport’s 208 GTi, which derives directly from the limited ’30ème Anniversaire Edition’ which produced 208 hp with revised suspension and an optional two-tone paint finish, facelifted to the original bumpers and other small changes .

The GTi’s Prince engine is shared with the Mini and various Citroëns.

The range of diesel units starts with the 1.4-litre four-cylinder e-HDi unit originally introduced in 2010 for the 207, delivering 50 kW (68 PS; 67 hp) of power, coupled with the 208, with published fuel economy and emission levels of 3.4 l/100 km (83 mpg – imp; 69 mpg – US) and 87 g/km.[14]

Trim [ edit ]

The 208 comes with a range of fairings and specs. From the entry-level model from 2019:

Active – Available with either a 1.2-litre Puretech 82 S&S petrol engine or a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel, both mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

Signature (also known as Allure) – Comes with the same engine and transmission as the Active, but has a different design and alloys.

Tech Edition – In addition to the same engine as the Active and Signature, two additional engine variants are also available. A 1.2-litre turbocharged Puretech 110 and an automatic version known as the EAT6, both three cylinders

GT-Line – This is the top-of-the-line model available from Peugeot. Coupled to the 1.2-liter 110 engines with both six-speed automatic and manual transmissions and the 1.5-liter diesel. This fairing offers all the styling of a hot hatch, it features 16 inch diamond cut alloys.

Second generation (P21; 2019) [ edit ]

The second generation Peugeot 208 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019 and officially went on sale across Europe over the summer.[19] An all-electric version called the e-208 was also unveiled in Geneva. The 208 offers a choice of powertrains with conventional petrol or diesel engines or an electric motor.

Technical[ edit ]

The 208’s powertrains and platform are shared with the Peugeot 2008, DS 3 Crossback and Opel Corsa. The conventional “PureTech” brand petrol engines are all 1.2 liter three-cylinder naturally aspirated EB2FA with 74 hp (55 kW; 75 hp) or turbo EB2DT with 100 hp (75 kW; 101 hp) or turbo EB2DTS with 129 hp ( 96 kW; 131 hp), except for Argentinian-made versions that use the naturally aspirated 1.6-litre EC5 engine with either petrol only or ethanol-capable flex-fuel for export to Brazil.

The diesel model will come in just one engine variant, a 1.5-litre four-cylinder developing 75 kW (102 PS; 101 hp). Moroccan buyers have the option of using the old 92 hp (68 kW; 91 hp) 1.6 HDi engine. Peugeot has yet to announce the sports models and engine used, such as the GTi, which was part of the 208 family.[19]

However, Guillaume Clerc, the project manager for the second generation of the 208, explained that development of a petrol-powered 208 GTi ended in 2017 because it was impossible to match the company’s average CO level

2 emissions targets with the larger 1.6 liter engine used in the previous generation 208 GTi. Clerc hinted that the next GTi could be based on the e-208.[22]

The 208 and e-208 are optionally available with advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automated parking and blind spot monitoring. Manual transmission models have cruise control up to a minimum speed of 29 km/h; The automatic and E208 models can steer the car to a standstill.[19]

Charging the Peugeot e208 at a high power charging station in the engine compartment of the electric Peugeot 208

Unlike contemporary rivals such as the Renault Zoe and Volkswagen ID.3, the e-208 shares a common chassis with the conventional petrol/diesel powered 208. Peugeot deliberately chose this to give potential buyers the opportunity to choose the powertrain that best suits their needs. [23]

This also allows Peugeot to assemble the e-208 on the same line as the 208 at the Trnava plant. Compared to the conventionally powered versions of the 208, the e-208 is approximately 350 kg (770 lb) heavier[19] and has a slightly wider rear axle to accommodate the battery pack.[24]

The e-208 has a heat pump controlled 50 kWh battery, a 100 kW (136 PS; 134 hp) motor and a 6.6 kW charger. The WLTP range is 340 km (211 mi).[26][27] It is equipped with a CCS Combo Type 2 connection and can charge at a suitable DC fast charging station with up to 100 kW.

The charge rate can be up to 40% of the state of charge 70 kW and then decrease to 50 kW.[28] The on-board charger is limited to 7.4 kW, but can optionally be equipped with a three-phase 11 kW charger.[29] In the e208, the gear selector is used to choose the level of regenerative braking.[24]

Shortly after it went on sale in October 2019, demand for the e-208 was strong. Peugeot had expected to produce about 30,000 e-208 cars per year, 10% of the projected annual production of 300,000 for the entire 208 line, but 1⁄4 of all pre-orders received were for the e208. The maximum production for the e-208 is 60,000 per year.[30]

The electric e-208 was voted “Most Desired Electric Car” at the Golden Steering Wheel awards ceremony in North Macedonia in early 2021.[31]

South American model[edit]

In July 2020, Peugeot began assembling the second generation 208 in Argentina at its Buenos Aires plant. Production at this plant is intended for the South American market.[33] It only produces combustion engine models as the e-208s sold in South America are imported.[34] The Argentinian-made 208 is equipped with the 1.6-litre VTi engine producing 114 PS (85 kW; 116 hp).[35]

In May 2022, following the merger of PSA and FCA to form Stellantis, Peugeot launched a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre 208 as an entry-level option for the Brazilian market, replacing the 70 hp (52 kW; 71st generation) Firefly engine from the Fiat Argo PS).[36][37][38]

Security [edit]

The 208 in its most basic Latin configuration with 4 airbags and ISA received 2 stars from Latin NCAP in 2021 under its new protocol (a notch above 2016-2019, similar to Euro NCAP 2014).[39]

208 T16 Pikes Peak[edit]

In April 2013, a 208 T16 was tested by Sébastien Loeb on Mont Ventoux.[44] Loosely based on the shape and styling of the production 208, the T16 is a 875 kg (1,929 lb) light vehicle that uses the rear wing of the Peugeot 908 and features a 3.2-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine , the 875 hp (652 kW; 887 hp) and 0-100 km/h in just 1.8 s[45] with the aim of participating in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The engine was derived from racing variants of the Sodemo-built PSA ES/L V6 used in the Le Mans Courage C60 racer between 2001 and 2003.

At Pikes Peak on June 30, 2013, Sébastien Loeb used the 208 T16 to break the record time set by Rhys Millen in 2012[46] on the first fully tarmac roads in the history of the competition.[47] The previous record of 9:46.164[48] was broken and a new record time of 8:13.878 was set.[49]

The car also won the hill climb at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2014.

Used Peugeot 208 (Mk1, 2012-2019) review – problems and recalls

In terms of reliability, the first generation Peugeot 208 doesn’t have the best reputation. So keep that in mind when looking at older, higher mileage examples. The car has also been subject to a number of recalls and examples of common faults affecting the 208 Mk1 are given below.

Common problems with the Peugeot 208 Mk1

Touchscreen glitches

Sometimes the touchscreen multimedia system can freeze and stop working. Turning the touchscreen off and back on can usually fix this.

wiper problems

When activated, the wipers may begin to shake across the windshield. The most effective solution seems to be replacing the wiper blades with Bosch items.

Boots rattle

When driving, annoying rattling can occur in the rear area – these are most likely caused by the trunk lock, the parcel shelf or the spare wheel holder.

Leaking rear window tube

The rear window washer fluid hose may leak and spray water into the trunk. A DIY repair is possible, but it’s fiddly work.

steering wheel

The small steering wheel isn’t a problem per se, but the small steering wheel divides opinions – for some, its low position means the wheel rim can obscure the instrument display. Whether or not you are affected depends on factors such as your preferred riding position.

Recalls

The Peugeot 208 has had quite a few recalls over its lifetime – no fewer than 20 to be exact. The first was issued in July 2012 to fix a faulty hood latch and the last recall came in October 2019 to prevent the engine from emitting excessive amounts of NOx due to engine management software calibration. Other Peugeot 208 Mk1 recalls include repairs for fuel and engine oil leaks, ESP and anti-lock braking system failures, defective tailgate struts and collapsing front suspension systems.
