Philosophy of Youth Ministry
We desire to love God and others by making and maturing disciples of Christ in youth ministry for the glory of God. We will encourage and train parents in their role as their children’s primary disciples. We will give teenagers the opportunity to interact with God’s Word and grow in their faith. We will actively disciple youth leaders and youth.
Parental and Church Responsibilities in Discipling the Next Generation
We believe that God designed both the family and the church body to invest in and steward the spiritual growth of the next generation. We believe that God has given the primary responsibility for discipleship of children to their parents (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). As spiritual leaders of the family, all Christian parents and especially Christian fathers (Ephesians 6:4) have a responsibility to lead their families in devotion to God. Parents should set an example of faithfulness and teach Bible lessons at home that are supplemented by Church Bible lessons. We believe that God is calling the church to stand by parents with encouragement and support and to help them make disciples of their children (Titus 2). GPBC will support and educate parents in their role by offering parent-centred classes and opportunities for parents to disciple their teens. GPBC will also offer discipleship and biblical counseling to parents and youth who ask for it or show signs of wanting or needing it. Teenagers who have non-believing parents but still have a desire for discipleship are “spiritually adopted” into the family of a church member who intends to teach and model the faithful life of that teenager.
Raising the next generation in God’s Word and with an active faith
We believe that people come to faith by interacting with God’s Word (Romans 10:17). We believe that people mature in their faith by interacting with God’s Word, both personally and collectively, by watching mature Christians live out their faith, and by living out their faith both personally and collectively (1 Tim 4.7). GPBC will consistently lead and model youth toward salvation and maturity through faithful, expository teaching of Scripture, discipleship, and counseling, and provide opportunities to serve others, both inside and outside the Church. Special opportunities and activities are created with a special focus on making disciples, and special opportunities and activities are created with a special focus on making disciples. However, it is also recognized that the goal of making and maturing disciples of Christ can often be accomplished through the same event or activity. Additionally, as the gospel is preached, we humbly expect teens to come to faith in Christ and mature in their faithfulness and obedience to His righteous ways through the ministry of His Word.
Relationship between leader, teenager and parents
We believe that older generations of believers in the church have a necessary role to play in discipling younger generations (Titus 2). GPBC will train willing youth leaders to interact with God’s Word, grow in leadership skills, and actively disciple youth. In return, we expect youth leaders to work with teenagers and their parents to encourage and support the teens’ initial repentance and faith, and then to encourage and support their growth in Christian maturity. Youth leaders will foster this discipleship relationship by teaching and modeling themes of evangelism, ministry, leadership, fellowship, and a biblical worldview.
The role of the youthful believer as part of the church
We believe that all who have put their faith in Jesus Christ are members of his body, the church, and of one another (Ephesians 4:1-16). Being an active part of the church means being an active witness of Christ in the world. Therefore, every youthful believer is encouraged to participate in GPBC in the same manner as a member would (Eph 4:17-32) and is encouraged to join the church as soon as they turn 18 years old. In addition, it means that the whole church should be involved in youth ministry, since youth are members of the body of Christ and the same member ministry that applies to adults also applies to teenagers.

The Pathfinder Club is a church-centered spiritual recreation program for young people ages 10-15. Pathfindering appeals to this age group because the program includes activities that suit their needs and interests. Much of the Pathfinder Club program is based on physical activity. Young people between the ages of 10 and 15 are in a rapidly growing phase of physical development. It is full of action, adventure, challenges, group activities and offers opportunities to develop new attitudes and skills that inspire personal growth, team or community spirit and a sense of loyalty and respect for God, His creation and His Church.
While the Pathfinder Club exists primarily for youth, one of its primary purposes is to bring parents and church members together through active engagement with the club and its members. Here the so-called generation gap disappears, as young and old worship, work and play together in a bond of shared experience. Meaningful relationships are forged when leaders and advisors engage with Scouts, build trust, and work together.
The whole philosophy of Pathfindering is based on the premise that “Children learn best from role models, not from prescriptions”. As they see leaders and parents exemplifying spiritual and social values, they too will strive to develop high moral standards, loving and caring attitudes, and a determination to excel in all their diverse pursuits.
Young people learn most effectively in a positive, happy and safe atmosphere. The attitude of the club leaders is therefore a crucial factor in guaranteeing the success and effectiveness of this youth work. A failure to listen to and understand the needs of young people will only erect obstacles to genuine spiritual growth and development and may prove to be a factor in making the church and its mission unattractive to youth.
Goals
This philosophy is an integral part of the association. The Pathfinder Club curriculum, with six classes and nearly 250 honors, is at the heart of the program. The following goals can be achieved if club leadership strives to meet them.
