What is pick a pair poker?
Pick a Pair Poker is a video poker game that only gives you the ability to select one card in your 5-card hand. This contrasts standard video poker games, where you have five choices – one for each card. Another notable aspect of this game is that there’s no draw round, where you keep cards and discard others.

Pick a Pair Poker is a video poker game where you can only choose one card from your 5-card hand. This is in contrast to standard video poker games where you have five choices – one for each card.
Another notable aspect of this game is that there is no draw round where you keep cards and discard others. Instead, your hand is completed after you choose one of the two cards you can choose between.
Several companies develop Pick a Pair Poker, including Bally Game Maker, IGT and Playtech.
Bally and IGT make Pick a Pair for land-based casinos while Playtech supplies this game to online casinos. The Bally and Playtech versions are called Pick ’em Poker, which has become an interchangeable name for Pick a Pair.
This game is attractive in both land-based and online casinos as it simplifies video poker for beginners. You only choose between two maps, which is nice for casual players.
But does this make pick-a-pair poker strategy easier than other games? And what adjustments do you need to make when playing Pick a Pair Poker Video Poker?
Find out how to play this game, paytable and strategy.
How to Play Pick a Pair Poker
Choose a pair of poker bets
This game offers a standard video poker betting format where you can play between 1 and 5 coins per hand. As we will cover in the Paytable section, proper strategy suggests you play all 5 coins to get a top payback.
The land-based Pick a Pair coin denomination is $0.25, which means you need to bet $1.25 with 5 coins. Online casinos allow you to adjust your coin size down to as little as a cent or two, making your total bet $0.05 to $0.10 at max coins.
When playing multi-hand pick-a-pair poker, which forces you to play three or more hands, optimal strategy requires you to bet 5 credits on each hand. In the case of 3 Play Pick a Pair, you would have to risk 15 coins to cover the maximum bets on all three hands.
play hands
Once you click deal to start a hand you will see two cards on the left and two cards on the right.
You will be prompted to select one of the two maps on the right. The card you select is added to your 5-card hand, while the unselected card disappears.
The two cards on the left are automatically in your hand and cannot be changed.
When you select a card to connect the two on the left, two more cards are automatically dealt. This completes your 5-card hand and the software determines whether or not your hand qualifies for a payout.
This process is very different from other video poker games where you have the option of standing and discarding cards.
Choose a pair of poker rules
Pick a Pair is played with a standard deck of 52 cards with no jokers. Each card is programmed to appear with the same frequency as you would see in a physical 52-card deck.
The random number generator ensures that every hand is shuffled and completely random.
This game is unique in the video poker world in that you make a multiple choice decision on a card. Making this choice completes your 5-card hand.
Choose a pair of poker variations
When playing a multi-hand version of Pick a Pair Poker you can choose one of the following games from the package:
9s or Better: Listed as Pick a Pair, this game is characterized by the lowest qualifying hand being a pair of 9s. This is the most common version of Pick a Pair and is similar to Jacks or Better.
Double Double Bonus: Offers special payouts for all four-of-a-kind hands, including a big payout for four aces with a kicker of 2, 3, or 4.
Deuces Wild: 2s are wilds, giving you a better chance of hitting big payouts, including a 5 of a kind. The catch is that the lowest qualifying payout is three of a kind.
3 Play Pick a Pair: You are dealt 3 hands and use the lower hand to hold cards and make discards. Any cards held in the lower hand are mirrored in the other hands.
5. Play Pick a Pair: The same except you are dealt 5 cards.
10. Game Pick a Pair: The same except you are dealt 10 cards.
Choose a pair paytable and odds
While Pick a Pair can be played through various games via multi-hand bundles, 9s or Better is the standard version.
This game uses the same winning hands as Jacks or Better, with the notable exception that a pair of nines is the lowest qualifying win – not jacks.
Below is Playtech’s paytable for 9s or Better, also known as Pick ’em Poker, which is commonly found in online casinos:
Hand 1 coin 2 coin 3 coin 4 coin 5 coin Royal Flush 1,000 2,000 3,000 4,000 6,000 Straight Flush 200 400 600 800 1,000 Four of a Kind 100 200 300 400 500 Full House 18 36 54 72 90 Flush 15 1 5 3 6 5 Three of a Kind 40 1 5 3 6 3 of a Kind 15 20 25 2 pairs 3 6 9 12 15 nines or better 2 4 6 8 10
If you use the optimal strategy in Playtech’s Pick a Pair game, you will get a 98.95% return on investment.
If you’ve played Jacks or Better before, this paytable will look familiar because the winning hands are exactly the same.
But the payouts are more generous on Pick a Pair as the lack of a drawing round makes it harder to hit a win.
Here is an example:
A max bet full house only pays 45 coins on 9/6 Jacks or Better, but it pays 90 coins on Pick a Pair.
As you continue, you’ll find that there is a progression in the Royal Flush payout at a 4-coin bet of 4,000 coins versus a 5-coin bet of 6,000 coins.
All other payouts in Pick a Pair increase proportionally as you bet more coins, with the exception of the Royal Flush. Because of this, you should bet 5 coins per hand to get the highest payout.
On the other hand, Pick a Pair offers one of video poker’s smallest progressions between winning a 4- and 5-coin royal flush. If you don’t have the bankroll to risk 5 coins per hand, then Pick a Pair is a game that doesn’t penalize you as much for betting less.
Choose a pair poker video poker strategy
As if Pick a Pair Poker wasn’t unique enough, it also offers a different strategy than other video poker games.
The reason for this is that you only have access to two maps, plus the third one you choose. This lets you make strategy decisions based on a 3-card hand.
Compare this to standard video poker where 5 cards are instantly available, giving you more information to base your decisions on.
This difference means that Pick a Pair strategy charts are also different from other games.
One of the most interesting things you will see right away is that three of a kind is the best hand in Pick a Pair.
Even though a 3 of a kind only pays 25 coins on a 5 credit bet, it’s the best possible hand you can get with the information available. This hand also gives you a 3.9% chance of improving to four of a kind on the fourth or fifth card dealt.
Below is a strategy chart specific to Playtech’s online version of Pick a Pair Poker.
As you read this, start at the top and scan down as you look for the best hand you can make with the first three cards. This table will also help you decide which card to pick from the two that you can choose between.
Sample Pick a Pair Poker Strategy Chart
3 of a kind
3 cards to a royal flush without an ace
High pair 9 9 to A A

Conclusion
One reason people choose video poker over slots is that it gives them the opportunity to use strategy. But others can be intimidated when they have to make 5 different decisions with each 5-card hand.
Pick a Pair Poker Video poker serves as a good bridge between slots and standard video poker since you only have to make one choice.
That’s not to say pick a pair is easy, as there are multiple hands to keep track of on a strategy chart. But the strategy and overall experience is more relaxed compared to most video poker games.
If you’re just starting out at video poker, Pick a Pair is a great way to get used to the game before looking for more complicated versions.
Of course, Pick a Pair can also entertain experienced players looking for a new video poker variant to try.
Whether you’ve played video poker in the past or not, Pick a Pair Poker is worth trying.

There are some surprisingly fun or useful poker apps that you can download for absolutely nothing. Luckily for you, we have compiled a short list of the best free poker apps on the internet that you can use to play online poker games.
Each and every one of these apps is free and covers the entire spectrum of games, productivity apps or even streaming services. Just take a quick look at the compilation below and download your free online poker apps!
Let’s dive into PokerListing’s list of 10 best free poker apps specially designed to play poker for free on your phone:
1. Appeak Poker
Apppeak Poker app
Appeak Poker is still our pick for the best free poker app with an incredibly simple interface that makes online poker a breeze. Download it to quickly get into some soft online poker games.
The app offers Play Now, which instantly gets you into a quick game alongside Sit & Gos, Bingo Bango, Double Ups and MTTs.
Appeak also offers a few unique ones like the patented duel feature where you compete against another poker player while representing your country against a poker player from another country. It’s all fun, but the Play Now button is what most people click on the most.
Pure poker. That’s what Appeak Poker is all about. You won’t find any clutter in the app and the interface is strikingly simple.
We talk about a table, cards and a chat box and that’s about it. It’s a nice change from poker apps that are constantly trying to sell you bonus chips or various side games like blackjack or roulette. This is an app that focuses on its main purpose, which is to play poker online.
Appeak is lightning fast and you can be playing within seconds of launching the app. Some people might find the barebones graphics a bit off-putting, but we like it a lot better than some of the unnecessarily complicated iPhone poker sites.
Appeak also offers its patented duels where you can represent your country against another country. The feature doesn’t have much depth, but it’s definitely worth trying.
The site also offers a highly competitive leaderboard for those who really want to compete with other poker players. One of Appeak Poker’s best qualities is that it’s not too crowded and doesn’t keep bugging you to buy more chips.
Appeak hasn’t changed much over the years, but it remains one of the fastest and easiest online poker experiences out there. This year the site added customizable avatars, which is a nice touch and appreciated by many when playing online poker.
This year Appeak also added support for Chinese, which should bring a huge contingent of new players. So to sum it all up. This is really one of the best free poker apps where you can sit down and test your poker skills in different online games.

3. SnapShove
Snapshove Poker App
Developed by poker pro Max Silver, SnapShove might be our new favorite app. This is a tool, not a game, but it has a lot to offer.
If you’re looking to improve your shove/fold ranges, there really isn’t a better app for you. We also love the simplified, clean interface and wish more poker apps would take this simple approach.
The completely free version of SnapShove gives you access to 9-hand and 6-hand shoving calculators and training. We especially like the training options, as it’s a quick way to brush up on proper strategy. If you want to learn more about strategy, read one of our Texas Holdem poker strategy articles.
SnapShove Pro currently costs $14.99, but it gives you access to a shove fold calculator with any number of players in addition to a calling calculator and more training options.
There’s a very good chance SnapShove Pro will pay for itself right away if you’re having trouble with SnapShove areas.

4. World Poker Club
World Poker Club Poker App
World Poker Club is a pretty standard poker app with one killer feature: it has an innovative gesture system.
While the poker app has the normal Check/Bet/Fold buttons, it also has touch-based gestures for each one. Double tap means Check/Call. Swipe up means fold and finally hold down and slowly pull up to bring out an increase slider.
It works surprisingly well and it wouldn’t be a complete surprise if some of the bigger free poker apps took advantage of this feature.
World Poker Club has a fair amount of nagware, but it’s worth downloading just to try out the gesture system. Last but not least, it is a change from the usual free poker games.

5. Jackpot Poker (PokerStars)
Jackpot Poker
Jackpot Poker is a fairly robust free-to-play option from PokerStars. Formerly known as PokerStars Play, Jackpot Poker has much of its heritage from the popular PokerStars Facebook app of the same name.
The main focus is on three player jackpot poker games, which should be familiar to anyone who has played Spin & Go games at the real money PokerStars site.
There are also cash games, but PokerStars focuses on jackpot poker, in which three players compete for a randomly increasing prize.
It’s a great way to learn poker strategy as it’s action packed and you actually need to develop reads about your opponents instead of just sitting back and waiting for premium hands like pocket aces or pocket kings.
Other features include simple, non-toxic tabletop emotes, a few strategy lessons, and swipe and flick controls. Fast and fun. That’s the name of the game at Jackpot Poker.

6. Zynga Poker
The original Facebook poker game got a much-needed kick in the pants in 2015 with a massive update that included Jump Poker.
Jump Poker is a fast-fold poker variant in which players are dealt a new hand immediately after they fold. In helps kickstart the action since you’re only playing one table at a time. In fact, thanks to Jump Poker, we find the normal games on Zynga Poker pretty boring now.
Zynga Poker also offers Sit & Gos for players looking to go beyond free online poker cash games. As one of the busiest poker sites in the world (even compared to real money poker sites), you’ll never have trouble finding a game on Zynga.
Once one of the most over-the-top poker games out there, Zynga has held back with the new software update, although personally we still find it a bit too busy for our liking.

7th World Series of Poker
If you follow poker at all, you’ve probably heard of the World Series of Poker. The most famous poker series in the world also has a free poker app that is one of the better ones in the market.
Designed by major game developer EA, World Series of Poker offers a solid interface and plenty of free chips to get you started.
World Series of Poker has a killer feature that most other free-to-play apps don’t have: pot-limit Omaha. For anyone bored with No-Limit Hold’em, Four Card PLO is a fantastic way to change up your poker playing schedule.
There’s plenty of World Series branding, including the chance to win virtual WSOP bracelets and rings.

8. Sharing my pair
There’s a good chance you heard about Share My Pair through one of the various tweets by Phil Hellmuth using the app.
Hellmuth is of course one of the promoters behind the app, which allows players to enter data and then visually view a current poker hand.
You can then share your hand via Twitter, Facebook, email or SMS. It’s much, much easier to follow the action via Share My Pair than a long string of text messages or a long email.
However, it’s not perfect and we criticize the app for taking quite a bit of time to enter all the information for a hand to display correctly. Not to mention the fact that there is likely to be a significant amount of user error.
That said, if you want to share a particular hand with a lot of people (whether they’re fans or supporters), there really isn’t a better way to do it.

9. Pineapple!
Ask any poker pro what they play most on their mobile and there’s a good chance they’ll say Open Face Chinese Poker. The game is timeless and the perfect way to while away a few hours on a flight or trip if you have two or three players.
Of course there are numerous OFC apps, but we really like pineapples! Because pineapple! looks great, costs nothing, and offers great security (in fact, it was the world’s first RNG-certified OFC mobile app). Plus pineapple! offers a variety of game modes including Pineapple (featuring Fantasy Land!), Regular OFC, and Low in the Middle. Finally, Pineapple does not require any form of registration or Facebook account.

10. Poker Headquarters
Poker Central is a groundbreaking app that allows viewers to watch poker on demand 24/7. It’s essentially the Netflix of poker and it’s somewhat surprising that it has taken anyone this long to capitalize on what is quite a long backlog of poker TV shows.
One of Poker Central’s key features is the fact that it’s available for a variety of platforms including mobile (iOS, Android) and home (Xbox One, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Roku).
Poker Central is pretty much the biggest background noise for hosting a home game. The only catch with Poker Central is that some of the programming isn’t top notch and you won’t find any WSOP or EPT episodes.
That being said, there are still some good programs out there (lots of love for high stakes poker) and Poker Central’s original programs like the Aria Super High Roller Series are very good too. If you’re a poker fan, this app is pretty much a no-brainer.

Real money poker apps
If you’re already familiar with the rules of poker and want to jump straight into the thrill of betting and winning at real money poker, there are a few good options. One of the best poker apps is 888 Poker, a trusted and well-produced poker app that will get you playing in no time and with very gentle games for beginners gives you a good chance of making some money playing real money poker games.
There are other nice mobile apps out there (PokerStars being one of course), but for extremely hard games we don’t recommend them for players who are new to online poker. Try 888poker out now by clicking the Get Bonus button on the right. If you’re not ready to play real money poker, 888poker also offers free play money games where you learn the rules of the game with virtual poker chips.
If you’ve tried 888poker, be sure to check out our other mobile poker app recommendations where you can play for real money.
Why is PokerStars rigged?
But here is the quick answer. PokerStars is not rigged. It just appears that way sometimes due to the incredible speed of online poker. Because online poker sites like PokerStars typically deal hands 3 times faster than a live poker game, you should expect 3 times as many bad beats.

Many casino sites are now mobile compatible, while others offer native apps for different platforms, allowing players to enjoy a wide range of virtual casino games, slots and video poker on the go. In fact, software developers are constantly developing new and better video poker games that can only be compared to virtual slots in terms of variety and sheer number. There are hundreds of video poker variants and although they are based on 5 card draw table poker, they offer different bonuses and paytables that make them different and exciting. The low house edge and relative simplicity of the games have made them incredibly popular around the world, and most of them can be played for free or for real money from any modern portable device.

Play video poker on mobile devices
Unlike regular poker, where you play against other players, in video poker you can bet against the dealer or, to be more precise, against the computer. The game follows the basic rules and card combinations of the casino classic, but is automated and considered much easier than table poker. In order to start a game, the player must first select the denomination and number of coins they wish to wager, then tap the Deal button. Five cards are dealt and after players have chosen which ones to keep, they must bet on them. If they press the Deal/Draw button again, the cards they discarded will be replaced with new ones. If the player has a winning hand, he or she will be awarded the appropriate payout.
Of course, players can use the best poker strategies when playing any of these games to maximize their chances of winning and get attractive payouts. The truth is that video poker, when played accurately and with minimal errors, lowers the house edge to make the odds work in your favor.
How it works
Video poker games are easily transferred to mobile devices and are familiar to most players as video poker machines in land-based casinos have already introduced touchscreen interfaces. Software developers keep releasing new titles and variations, but they are all based on the traditional video poker games that have been around for decades. So anyone who has ever played video poker at a brick-and-mortar or online casino should be familiar with mobile gameplay. There are virtually no differences other than the smaller screen of your phone or tablet. And of course, instead of controlling the game with a mouse, you’ll do everything through your device’s touchscreen capabilities.
All popular variations can be found on mobile – Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Double Bonus Poker and many others. Players can also choose between single or multi-hand versions of many games, depending on their skill level and budget. Many progressive jackpots are also available, as well as bonus games and wild card variants. The games are designed to move seamlessly from your computer to your phone or tablet, whether it’s running on Android, iOS, Windows 10 Mobile, or BlackBerry 10.
In addition, social gaming has become very important for many players as they can share their results with fellow players or friends on social networks. As a result, there are many video poker games with leaderboards listing the best players. There are hundreds of free spins titles where you wager demo credits, but more importantly, real money play is becoming more and more accessible. Mobile users can either play video poker from the mobile sites of their favorite casinos or download one of the many applications available for iOS and Android devices.
Mobile Apps
One of the easiest and most convenient ways to play video poker is by downloading a mobile app directly onto the device. This gives players instant access to their favorite video poker titles from the home screen of their phone or tablet. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of apps in Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store, most of which are free to download while some are available for a small price.
More and more online casinos offer special apps that allow mobile users access to a large part of the games from their websites. Most official casino apps that allow real money gaming are only available on the App Store as Google has a policy of not tolerating gambling apps. Many apps can also be downloaded directly from casino sites, which is even more convenient for many players who prefer the security and fairness guaranteed by licensed gambling providers. Typically, these apps allow you to play an average of 100-150 games, and most casinos’ mobile libraries contain no more than 4 or 5 video poker titles.
In addition to the native casino apps, mobile users can also choose from a variety of video poker applications, most of which are only available for iOS. However, Google’s Play Store also offers a huge collection of video poker apps to play for free. It should also be noted that there are fewer, if any, real money apps available in most unregulated markets.
Playback in browser
Most online casinos today are fully mobile compatible and can be opened directly from your phone or tablet browser. Instead of downloading apps, users can play various video poker games easily in the browser by simply opening the casino website on their device. There are hundreds of mobile websites out there that are just as smooth and functional as their original desktop versions. Not only do players instantly load their favorite games, they also log in, manage their casino accounts and authorize payments so they can play for real money.
Multiple platforms are supported, so customers can visit and place bets at their favorite casino, whether their device runs on iOS, Android, BlackBerry 10, Windows 10 Mobile or Sailfish OS. Typically, this requires your device to have all the latest software updates installed.
advantages
The most obvious benefit of playing video poker from your phone or tablet is portability – you can place bets whenever you’re on the go and at any time of the day rather than spending hours at home in front of your desktop or laptop computer. It’s far more convenient and entertaining to play your favorite video poker game on your phone while you’re on a long and boring commute looking for a fun, profitable way to while away the time. The social factor is also very important for many players – although video poker is not played against other players, it’s always nice to be able to compare yourself to others and connect with people who share the same passion. Many apps allow for sharing, posting leaderboard results, and running regular tournaments.
A large proportion of casinos also allow users to practice the game without wagering real money. Furthermore, some gambling providers even offer players to test the games without registering an account. You can practice your video poker skills in the browser or, if you’re really into the game, you can download one of the many free video poker applications available for both iOS and Android devices.
When you play video poker at one of the many mobile casinos, there is a great chance that you will receive a special mobile-only bonus along with the other casino promotions and rewards.
Disadvantages
Mobile casinos still offer a relatively small number of games compared to the great abundance offered on their original sites. Most casino apps offer no more than 6 or 7 video poker titles and instead focus on the slot games, which are still the most popular type of casino games today. However, there are some casinos with significantly larger mobile libraries where players can have more choices.
Another setback for some players is the small screen size of phones – sometimes the letters and even the cards are too small and can make the gaming experience really challenging. This is why choosing a good casino with well-designed interface and games is essential when you start playing mobile video poker.
Mobile video poker providers
Since video poker games work very similarly on mobile phones as they do on desktop or laptop computers, most players shouldn’t have any problems. You should also be familiar with the special mobile video poker games on offer as they are the same as in online and brick-and-mortar casinos. There are numerous variations of video poker and literally hundreds of titles from different software developers, but most are based on the classic Jacks or Better variant. It derives from 5-card draw poker and the aim is to collect the highest paying card combination. It uses a standard hand ranking where the strongest hand is the royal flush, followed by straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, and jacks or better (a pair of jacks or higher).
NetEnt Video Poker Games
NetEnt is a household name in the online game development industry and has a nice collection of video poker titles that should satisfy most players. The game studio has its own versions of some of the most popular variants of the game – Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild and All American. They come in standard single-hand options and also in multi-hand variants where players can bet on up to 100 hands at a time. The provider also offers Joker Wild, a game with an extra card, a joker that serves as a wild card and can substitute for any other card in the deck.
The payback percentages of each game are published by the developer and the theoretical return of 99.56% of the three Jacks of Better versions is the most attractive, followed by the All American games with a return of 98.11% and finally the payback of only 97.97% for Deuces Wild and its versions.
NetEnt video poker games also have a special Double Up feature that is activated after the player has achieved a winning hand. He or she is then presented with face down cards in a bonus game where the aim is to guess their color correctly. A correct answer doubles the winnings from the hand, while an incorrect one causes the player to lose it. However, the best thing about this provider’s video poker games is that they are available at a variety of casinos. Their mobile versions have clear graphics and are of high quality overall, which greatly improves the gaming experience even on smaller screens.
Microgaming video poker games
Even the most demanding of players should be pleased with the wide range of video poker games that Microgaming offers. This is one of the largest software developers and currently has the most diverse selection of video pokers with variations like Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Aces and Faces, Aces and Eights, All American, Tens or Better, Deuces and Joker, Louisiana Double and many others. Of course, some of these are available in multi-hand or power variants. The games with the highest RTP (Return to Player) percentages are All Aces (99.92%), Jacks or Better Power Poker (99.54%) and All American (99.38%).
The graphics of the games are not as sophisticated as you would expect from a giant in the casino software development industry like Microgaming. However, their video poker variants are among the most popular among players due to their simplicity and low house edge. It is less than 1% on most games, which means players have a real chance of beating the casino.
real-time gaming
RealTime Gaming is one of those software providers that offers really nice, crisp graphics, and while video poker is generally less graphically intensive than video slots or even table games, quality is always important. In this case, players can enjoy sharp, fast-paced games that are easy to use and have a relatively good RTP. The gaming studio is also famous for the wealth of video poker titles it has in its portfolio. However, the number of mobile offers is somewhat limited.
Nevertheless, players can choose between video poker classics such as Jacks or Better, Bonus Deuces Wild, Joker Poker or Double Double Bonus Poker as well as several multi-hand variants. They are designed to run smoothly on any mobile device. But before you start playing any of their games, players need to know that paytables vary from one casino to another as RealTime Gaming allows gambling operators to change the amount of payouts.
IGT video poker games
When it comes to video poker, IGT is considered a pioneer – they developed the first video poker machines in the 1970s. A lot has changed since then, but the software provider is still a leader in the development, manufacture and distribution of video poker machines and virtual video poker games. It currently offers nine unique titles in its portfolio, including Jacks or Better, Multi-Hand Draw Poker, Deuces Wild, Double Double Bonus Poker, Joker Poker, and Ultimate X Poker, which comes in several different multi-hand, bonus, and multiplier games. variations.
In fact, most of IGT’s games offer a variety of options to choose from and are effectively bundles made up of multiple video poker variants. This innovative 9-in-1 solution offers mobile gamers even more choices. Meanwhile, the games have a simple, retro-looking interface that’s easy to work with – players can instantly change the bet size, the speed of the game, or simply switch to another video poker variant.
Popular mobile casinos for video poker
There is a wide range of mobile video poker apps, but when it comes to real money gaming most users prefer fully licensed casinos that offer fair play and transparency. All video poker variants in reputable mobile casinos use RNG (Random Number Generator) technology, which ensures that the results of each round are completely random and cannot be manipulated. Gambling operators have special certificates and the games they offer are regularly and independently tested. In addition, casinos provide secure payments and, in addition to video poker, offer many other games of various types and genres, tailored to the needs and tastes of each player.

How do poker pairs work?
Pair: A pair (two cards of the same rank) beats high card. The highest pair is a pair of aces. If two or more players have the same pair, then the highest of the three remaining cards (known as kickers) determine the winner.

Texas Hold’em (or “Hold’em” for short) is the most popular poker variant right now, thanks largely to the televised World Series of Poker, World Poker Tour, and various high-profile events. Often referred to as the “Cadillac of poker,” the no-limit version takes a minute to learn but a lifetime to master.
♣ Handball
Each player is dealt two face down cards (or hole cards) that only they can see. A round of betting takes place. Three community cards (known as the “flop”) are dealt face up in the center of the table. Another round of betting takes place. A fourth community card (known as the “turn”) is dealt face up on the table. Another round of betting takes place. A fifth and final community card (known as the “River”) is dealt face up on the table. A final round of improvement takes place. The player’s hole cards are revealed and the player with the best five-card poker hand wins the pot. Your five-card hand can consist of none, one, or both of your hole cards along with five, four, or three community cards. If two or more players share the same best hand, the pot is split equally among the winners.
♣ Rank of hands
Poker hands are ranked in the order below, from lowest to highest. Note that in poker only card rank (two through ace) counts when comparing individual cards. The suits of clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades are all considered the same.
High Card: Cards are ranked from lowest two (2) to highest ace. If two or more players have the same high card, the second highest card (and so on through the fifth card, if necessary) determines the winner. Pair: A pair (two cards of the same rank) beats a high card. The highest pair is a pair of aces. When two or more players have the same pair, the highest of the three remaining cards (known as the kicker) determines the winner. Two Pair: Two pairs beat one pair. If two or more players have two pairs, the highest pair determines the winner. For example, a pair of aces and sevens beats a pair of kings and queens. If two or more players have the same two pair, the fifth card kicker determines the winner. Three of a Kind: A three of a kind (three cards of the same rank) beats two pair. Three aces is the best of it. If two or more players share the same three of a kind hand, the two remaining kickers determine the winner. Straight: A straight beats three of a kind. A straight consists of five consecutive rows of cards. Aces can be high or low, so the lowest straight is an ace to five, while the highest is ten to an ace. There are no kickers with straights as all five cards are required to form the hand. Flush: A flush beats a straight. A flush is any five cards that are all the same suit (i.e. all diamonds or all spades, etc.). When two or more players share a flush, the player with the highest card (up to the fifth card if necessary) in the flush wins. Full House: A full house beats a flush. A full house is the combination of three of a kind and a pair. If two or more players have a full house, the player with the best three of a kind wins. If these are equal, the player with the best pair wins. Four of a Kind: A four of a kind (four cards of the same rank) beats a full house. If two or more players have the same four of a kind, the fifth card kicker determines the winner. Straight Flush: A straight flush (five consecutive cards of the same suit) beats four of a kind. Aces can be high or low. A straight flush with an ace-high is called a royal flush, the best possible hand in poker.
♣ Betting variations
Texas Hold’em can be played in three basic variants:
Limit Hold’em: In Limit Hold’em, the amount you can bet or raise is fixed according to the published stakes. A bet placed before the turn card (4th community card) is dealt is called a “small bet” and is fixed at the size of the big blind. A bet placed after the turn card has been dealt is called a “big bet” and is equal to twice the size of the big blind. In tournament play, these bets are increased at set intervals called “levels”. For example, in a 100/200 level, the “small bet” is 100 and the “big bet” is 200. This means that in the first two betting rounds (pre-flop and post-flop) you can bet or raise exactly 100 chips and in the In the last two betting rounds (before and after the river) you can bet or raise exactly 200 chips. In limit play, the bet is limited to three raises per round unless two players are heads-up in the round.
Pot Limit Hold’em: There are no fixed stakes in Pot Limit Hold’em. Instead, you can bet or raise up to the amount currently in the pot. This includes bets in front of you and your call. For example, if there are 100 chips in the pot and you are the first to act in the betting round, you can bet a maximum of 100 chips. But the next player could then call that 100 and raise another 300 chips.
No Limit Hold’em: In No Limit Hold’em, you can bet all of your chips at any time (this is known as “all-in”).
In pot-limit and no-limit games, the minimum bet or raise is equal to the big blind (see below). Once a player raises, the minimum raise is equal to the last raise. The minimum resets to the big blind on the next round of betting.
♣ Blinds and the button
In a home game, players take turns dealing and turning clockwise. In casino and online games that use a dedicated dealer, a dealer button (or simply the “button”) is a white disc that spins clockwise between players. The player “on the button” is the last to act after the flop in each betting round.
In Texas Hold’em, before the hole cards are dealt, there are forced bets called “blinds”. These blinds are similar to antes, except they only affect two players and the bets don’t go into the pot immediately. The player to the left of the button posts the small blind and the next player posts the big blind. The small blind is usually half the big blind, and the big blind is the minimum bet or raise that can be made in this and all subsequent rounds. In limit hold’em, the big blind corresponds to the “small bet”. In tournament play, the blinds increase at set intervals or increments. This keeps the action going and sets a definite ending to the game. Otherwise, players could just clasp their hands and the game would last for hours or days.
Once the two blinds are posted, the player to the left of the big blind is “first to act” and has the option to fold, call, or raise the big blind bet. Play continues until the button is pressed. Then the player who posted the small blind has the option to call or raise the previous bets. And the same goes for the player who posted the big blind. If no one has raised the big blind, that player has an opportunity to “check” and the flop is dealt. There are no forced bets after the flop, and the first person to the left of the button (who has not yet folded) is the first to act in subsequent betting rounds.
♣ Side pots
A side pot occurs when a player calls a bet but doesn’t have enough chips to cover the bet, or when a player raises while another player is already all-in. The main pot contains only the chips to which each player contributed equally. The overflow bets go into the side pot, which the all-in player hasn’t contributed to and therefore can’t win. There can be multiple side pots when there are multiple all-in players. The most recently created side pot is the first side pot awarded after the showdown. The main pot is awarded last. Players who fold before showdown lose their right to all pots, including the main pot.
How do you get a pair in poker?
We make a pair when exactly two of the cards within our hand are of identical rank. Both Hand 1 and hand 2 make a pair of jacks. In situations where two players make the same pair, the winner is decided by the side cards known as kickers.
Pick A Pair Poker FREE on Windows PC Download Free
We form a pair when exactly two of the cards in our hand are of the same rank.
For example in Hold’em,
Board: J♥9♥4♠2♠3♣
Hand 1: A♦J♦
Hand 2: Q♠J♣
Hand 3: K♠K♦
Both hand 1 and hand 2 form a pair of jacks. In situations where two players form the same pair, the winner is determined by the side cards known as kickers. Hand 1 forms a pair of jacks with an ace-kicker, while hand 2 forms a pair of jacks with a queen-kicker.
Hand 3 also pairs, but only uses hole cards since it’s a pocket pair. Hand 3 beats both Hand 1 and Hand 2 because it is a higher pair.
Board: A♥9♥T♠8♣2♦
Hand 1: A♠5♠
Hand 2: A♦4♦
This example shows how important it is to remember that Hold’em hands are always 5 cards. At first glance, hand 2 seems to be better due to the higher side card, but these hands are actually chopping. Both hands form a pair of aces with ten, nine and eight as side cards.
Board: A♥T♦J♦2♣2♠
Hand 1: A♠Q♠
Hand 2: A♦K♦
Since a pair is already on board, both hand 1 and hand 2 are technically two pair, aces and deuces. Since there is already a pair on the board and part of both players’ hands, both hands are often colloquially referred to as “one pair” (although they are actually two pair). In the example above, hand 2 wins because it has the better kicker.
How to use a pair as part of your poker strategy
While one-pair holdings can often win at showdown in variants like no-limit hold’em, they aren’t particularly strong holdings and should usually be cautious when it comes to playing big pots. Until our opponent is willing to put 100BB in the middle (say, in a 100BB cash game), it’s somewhat rare (though not impossible) for our pair to make the most of it.
Special attention needs to be paid to our kicker, especially when you are holding some of the higher pairs. Aces are the pair most likely to be thrown out simply because i) more players want to play aces preflop and ii) because ace-high board textures are the most common. Baby Aces (e.g. A2-A5) can be particularly problematic for beginners as they tend to overplay top pair.
The relative hand strength of one-pair holdings will change greatly depending on board texture. Pairs tend to perform best on drier textures, while their value falls off dramatically on textures where a decent number of straights and flushes are possible.
Four-card variants like Pot Limit Omaha are much easier to pair and are therefore worth much less than Hold’em.

The ranking of hands increases sequentially from the easiest hand to make to the most difficult (least likely). (So now you know exactly why flushes rank higher than straights in Texas Hold’em.)
The probability of a pair in poker is ~42%.
The probability of making a full house poker is less than 1% (~0.1441%).
The probability of hitting a royal flush in poker Texas Hold’em is only 1 in 649,740 hands!
The probability of a straight flush in poker is 1 in 72,193 hands or 0.00139%.

How to find the odds of poker hands
What is the probability of getting a two pair in poker?
What is the possibility of being dealt a straight in poker?

In our huge 888poker magazine we have a wealth of articles that already have all the answers to your burning questions about probabilities and odds of winning specific poker hands.

Odds of being dealt specific hole cards in poker
Multiply 52 cards in a standard deck by 51 (for the second card), then divide that product by 2 (because AcKs is the same as KsAc is dealt—just the order in which it’s dealt is reversed). You will see that there are 1,326 unique 2 card combinations you can get in Texas Hold’em.
To break this down further, if you take a hand like AK, you can multiply the 4 aces by 4 kings to see that there are a total of 16 combinations of AK, both suitable and unsuitable.
Since there are 4 suits in poker, out of those 16 combinations, 4 of those AK combinations are suitable, leaving 12 unsuitable combinations of unpaired hands. (The same numbers apply to all unpaired poker hands). In pocket pairs, there are 6 combinations of each value.
Knowing the above information, we can then do some basic calculations to determine the probability of receiving certain combinations of hole cards.
For example, for pocket aces we would divide 6 hands by 1,326 total hands to see that we get that hand on average every 1 in 221 hands.
Because there are only 4 combos for each hand (instead of 6 as with pocket pairs), you’re less likely to get suited non-paired hands (of certain ranks) than pocket pairs for any specific suited hand. Therefore, on average, you will be dealt a hand like AKs every 1 in 332 hands, meaning you will be dealt AA more often than AKs.
For the last item in this section, if you want to determine the probability of being dealt hand X or better, simply add up the number of combinations for each hand.
For example, if we wanted to determine the odds of QQ+ and/or AK, we see that there are 18 combinations of pocket pairs and 16 combinations of AK, making a total of 34 combinations.
Dividing 1,326 total combos by 34 of those specific combos then means you get about 1 AK or QQ+ in all 39 hands.
Here is a chart summarizing this key information about the hole cards described above, in addition to other probabilities of being dealt combinations of specific holdings:
Hand Total Hand Combinations Probability (%) Odds Any 2 Cards 1326 100% 1 in 1 AK (any specific hand) 16 1.2% 1 in 82.8 AKs (any specific matching hand) 4 0.3% 1 in 331.5 AKo (any designated other suit hand) 12 0.9% 1 in 110.5 AA (any pocket pair) 6 0.5% 1 in 221 KK+ 12 0.9% 1 in 110.5 QQ+ 18 1.4% 1 in 73.7 JJ+ 24 1.8% 1 in 55.3 TT+ 30 2.3% 1 in 44.2 QQ+, AK 34 2.5% 1 in 39 JJ+, AK 40 3.0% 1 in 33, 2 TT+, AK 46 3.4% 1 in 28.8 All unpaired suited cards 312 23.5% 1 in 4.3 All unpaired unsuited cards 936 70.6% 1 in 1.4 Any pocket pair 78 5 .8% 1 of 17 Any Suitable connectors 52

Chances of flopping a made hand
The section above dealt with the probability of receiving certain combinations of hole cards. But what about poker odds, how do those hole cards improve on specific flops (and by what degree)?
Here is a chart of various poker hole card probabilities that you should go through and get used to in relation to the odds of flopping a made hand (of varying strength):
Your Hole Cards Flop (Your Hand) Probability (%) Odds Unpaired Cards A Pair 29.0% 1 in 3.5 Pocket Pair A Set 11.8% 1 in 8.5 Connected Cards (JT to 54) A Straight 1, 3% 1 in 77 Suited Connectors A Flush 0.8% 1 in 119
Poker Odds: Improve your drawing hands
An “out” in poker is a card that helps increase the strength of your hand. The most common outs are the ones that help a player make a straight or flush.
Here is a table explaining the odds of improving your hand depending on the number of outs you have:
Basic Probability Rules Poker
Now, of course, it’s going to be difficult to refer to this chart for each hand to see what your odds are of improving and then relate that to the pot odds you’re getting. So to give you a basic shortcut, use the following trick to help you calculate the probability of your poker hands improving:
If you multiply the number of outs you have on the flop by 4, you get a solid approximation of the odds of making your hand to the turn or river (i.e. with two cards coming).
Multiplying the number of outs you have on the flop or turn by 2 gives you a reliable approximation of the odds of making your hand with the next card.
Sometimes you may want to vary the number of outs that will help you improve your hand to account for the likelihood that doing so will also help your opponent improve into an even better hand.
For example, if you think your opponent might have a higher flush draw, or if the board pairs give you a flush and your opponent might give you a full house, you could slightly decrease your “outs” (e.g., 8.5 outs instead of from 9). This adjustment takes this possibility into account when relating it to your pot odds and how you should play the hand.
What if I wanted to practice poker probability myself?
The methodology behind practicing poker probability problems without using shorthand can certainly still be done.
To do this, you need to add up the probabilities of certain outcomes occurring, for example:
Hit one of your outs on the turn
Hitting one of your outs on the river, but not the turn
EXAMPLE PROBLEM #1: A normal flush draw
To solve a typical poker probability problem, suppose you have a flush draw after the flop and simply want to know the odds of improving to a flush by the river.
Since 4 of 13 cards of the suit have already been revealed, there are 9 remaining cards (“outs”) that can help you.
And with two hole cards and three flop cards already accounted for, there are 47 unknown cards in your deck for you.
Knowing this, you can perform the appropriate calculations and add the results to determine your chances of getting a flush:
Odds of hitting your flush on the turn: (9/47) = 19.15%
Odds of hitting your flush on the river: (39/47)*(9/46)= 16.23%
Probability of making your flush on the turn OR on the river: 19.15% + 16.23% = 35.38%
Here you can see that the probability of making a flush on the river after flopping a flush draw is 35.38%. Using the “shortcut rule” above, you can see that 9 outs multiplied by 4 equals 36%, which is pretty close to the exact answer here.
EXAMPLE PROBLEM #2: A backdoor flush draw
To practice the probabilities of hitting a backdoor flush, you would need to multiply (10 flush outs / 47 unknowns) on the turn by (9 flush outs / 46 unknowns) on the river. The result would show that there is a ~4.2% chance of a 3 flush on the flop becoming a full 5 card flush on the river.
Calculating the probability of heads-up poker hands
A critical thing to note in poker is the difference in equity spread when there is only one opponent versus multiple opponents in a poker hand with you.
Against many players, the equity of each player’s respective hands will be lower than if it were heads-up as it is split and distributed among the other remaining players.
Take pocket aces for example. Against the following villain range for your opponent(s):
Any pocket pair
Any matching ace
Any two Broadway tickets
Suitable connectors: 54s to T9s
Suited connectors with a gap: 86s to J9s
Q9s, K9s
Here are the equity percentages against which Pocket Aces competes:
One opponent: 83.4%
Two opponents: 70.6%
Three opponents: 60.2%
Four opponents: 51.4%
As you can see, the more opponents there are in a hand, the less chance AA has of winning, which is why playing those big pairs in a low SPR heads-up pot is so beneficial.
And if you have drawing hands in a multi-way scenario, more opponents may not change the number of outs you need to improve. However, the chances of someone else having a better draw than you, or a hand that could later beat you, increase with more opponents.
Additionally, when the action is multidirectional, it’s important to note that players tend to bluff less and bet more when they bet.
Therefore, with the last two points in mind, it is crucial to always keep in mind how many opponents are in a hand and determine how best to play accordingly.
Poker Probability Summary
In order to increase your chances of winning at poker, you need to get used to the odds and probabilities presented to you in the game. Become familiar with outs and how to calculate your improvement percentages and be able to quickly correlate them with the pot odds you may be getting so you can determine whether or not you can call profitably.
(For more information on pot odds and bet sizing, check out this Comprehensive Bet Sizing Guide).
Also remember that you don’t always have to “just call” when you have a tie. Sometimes it can be beneficial to bet or raise. This way, you can either win by improving to the best hand later on, or get your opponent to fold.
(More information on equity and fold equity can be found here.)
