Is picture perfect a metaphor?

Early on, photography was expensive and laborious, so photographers and their subjects may have wanted things to look or be arranged as nicely as possible for the prized picture. Picture perfect readily lent itself to metaphor.

The phrase “picture perfect” may date back to the 1850s, appearing in newsletters and specialty photography magazines. One example describes an “inherently perfect picture” in an article on taking color photographs, which may have helped inspire its use as an adjective, picture-perfect, or as perfect as a picture is taken, or as perfect as things appear to be a picture. Photography used to be expensive and tedious, so photographers and their subjects might want things to look or be arranged as beautifully as possible for the precious picture.

The perfect image lent itself easily to metaphor. A notable early example came in January 1909, when an article appeared in The Atlanta Constitution: “Exquisite decoration made the setting perfect for the wedding picture; quantities of beautiful flowers were used to decorate the four rooms.” Picture perfect here does not describe the quality of one image, but compares the quality of the shot to what it might look like if prepared for a photograph.

The term became popular as a promotional word in the 1960s. As photography became more sophisticated and accessible around this time, advertisers began promising products that would deliver a perfect result or experience. For example, a hair color seller might boast that their products turn the user into a perfect blonde, directly addressing a consumer’s desire to be as gorgeous as a blonde model they’ve seen in photos.

Picture Perfect – Arcane Wonders

How do you take the perfect picture of a group of people if you only have one try? Each character has different desires. Some want to be in the foreground; some want to stand next to others; and some definitely don’t want to be next to that one particular person. Do your best to make everyone happy – even if you don’t know all of the characters’ preferences…

In Picture Perfect, first published as The Perfect Moment, you have to line up fourteen characters to take the perfect photo. Each of them has three specific wishes that you want to fulfill. Unfortunately, these wishes are hidden in envelopes.

Note: These are not included in the acrylic standee upgrade packs. These are available here: https://www.arcanewonders.com/product/picture-perfect-deluxe-acrylic-upgrade-pack/

Picture-perfect Definition & Meaning

“Pride”: The word that went from vice to strength

are you proud of pride

Picture Perfect Game Review — Meeple Mountain

Picture Perfect is a logic puzzle and memory game where you have been hired to get guests at a dinner party to pose for a group portrait. Check out our review for details!

At Game 21, my traveling companion was drawn to an odd little game we saw at the Arcane Wonders booth. The players sat around the table with their own tableaus and a small army of cardboard cutouts. It was called Picture Perfect. From outside the game, just in passing, it was a little inscrutable. The box, which I’m only now noticing, and which doesn’t show a towering woman looking down at two normal-sized people, promised a generally comfortable time. Now that I’ve played it, that’s exactly what it delivers.

Picture Perfect is a logic puzzle and memory game where you, the photographer, have been hired to get guests at a dinner party to pose for a group portrait. Of course, the guests cannot make this easy for themselves. Everyone has a trio of preferences that are randomly assigned during setup based on where they want to be, and they keep those preferences private.

Each round you have access to the preferences of a different number of guests, usually two or three. Although the occasional guest’s information will come back to you – each round uses a different method of changing who has access to what – you’ll see the contents of each envelope more often than not once, if you see them at all. You rely primarily on your memory to see that everyone gets a position to their liking.

The individual settings are not too complicated. Some guests want to stand to the left or right of the table, in the middle or back row, some don’t want to stand next to men, things like that. Some of the preferences imply interpersonal relationships: wanting to be next to a particular guest, not wanting to be next to a particular guest. My personal favorite is the preference that another guest’s face should not be visible in the final photo. There are three such cards, one aimed at the young blond woman depicted on the box, one aimed at the cheeky maid and another aimed at the house corgi. That’s the kind of implied pettiness in the narrative that I can really get behind.

Preference card randomization is a clever way to ensure that no two games are exactly alike, but it creates the possibility of conflicting preferences. The houseplant—one of the guests is a houseplant—may want to be on both the left and right sides of the table, which isn’t possible. Luckily you don’t lose points unless you confronted someone without fulfilling any of their requirements. Of course, you score significantly more points if you complete all three, but it is sufficient if you hit one.

I really like this as a design decision because it means you only lose points if your memory fails completely. Remember one thing about every guest and you will do well. This makes the game more accessible for families, as children may have trouble keeping track of all the details. Part of the fun of the game is figuring out how to set the standees so that you can remember their preferences as you keep adding more. “Why did I put the dandy in the back corner,” you’ll mutter to yourself. Once the final round is complete, everyone is encouraged to take a picture of their tableau with a cell phone before the start of scoring. Smart for marketing purposes and a nice way to tie the topic together at the end.

As I said at the beginning, I found Picture Perfect immensely enjoyable. If I suggest a game to play with children of a certain disposition, I would immediately recommend it, and I imagine I would always be happy to play it at someone else’s request. One of the smartest things about this design, whether intentional or not, is the lack of a competitive spirit. Picture Perfect never feels like you’re playing against someone else, and that makes it all the more fun.

Did everyone find a place? Ready? Okay, say “cheese!”
