How to Package Dry Foods in Mylar Bags for Long Term Storage – The Provident Prepper
Approximate reading time: 15 minutes
The world has gone a little crazy around us and stocking up on groceries for emergencies seems like an incredibly smart choice. One way to package dry goods like rice and beans for long-term storage is in Mylar bags.
What is a foil pouch or mylar pouch?
Mylar bags are made from multiple layers of laminated food grade plastic and aluminum. Food does not react with aluminum as it is separated by a food grade plastic liner. Mylar bags provide a good light, moisture and oxygen barrier to protect the food inside the bag. Make sure the bags you buy are of high quality and suitable for food storage
Benefits of storing dry goods in Mylar bags
Mylar bags effectively protect against light, moisture and insects. They create a good oxygen barrier, which allows oxygen to be transported away and extends the shelf life of the food.
Bags can be made in different sizes. Some are small enough to seal a packet of garden seeds for storage, others are large enough to line a 5 gallon bucket. The Mylar bags are washable and reusable after breaking the original seal.
Dry foods are easy to wrap and seal at home with an iron or even a hair straightener.
Disadvantages of storing dry goods in Mylar bags
Bags are not rodent proof. The Mylar bags are more fragile than #10 cans or plastic pails and should be handled with care. Plan for a slightly shorter shelf life than items stored in a #10 can.
Another problem is that the Mylar bags don’t stack well. They leave plenty of room in a tote bag or bucket, so they take up more space. The best way to save space with a mylar bag is to use the large 5 gallon bags in a bucket. Jonathan would recommend you to use square buckets for best space saving.
Good options for kibble to store in mylar bags
Pack only non-perishable foods that are low in oil and moisture. Ideally, food for long-term storage should have a moisture content of 10% or less.
Dry goods such as wheat, white rice, beans, pasta, oats, sugar, and flour are examples of foods that store well in a Mylar bag. Freeze-dried food can also be stored well in the Mylar bags.
You can pack dehydrated fruits and vegetables in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers as long as the produce is completely dry. It should snap and not just bend. Storing wet food in a low-oxygen environment can lead to botulism poisoning. Don’t risk it!
Whole grains have a longer shelf life than ground grains. For example; Wheat (30+ years) has a longer shelf life than flour (5 years). Whole corn has a longer shelf life than cornmeal. Rolled oats and rolled oats have a longer shelf life than oatmeal. Dry beans have a longer shelf life than ground beans.
Read these posts to learn more about the shelf life of stored dry goods.
Foods that should NOT be packed in Mylar bags (with an oxygen absorber).
Brown rice has a high oil content and a short shelf life. Foods high in moisture or oil such as raisins, nuts, granola, chocolate chips, cookies, and crackers are NOT good candidates for long-term storage in a Mylar bag.
Choosing the right Mylar bag to store your groceries
There is a wide variety of Mylar bags or pouches. Choosing the right variety is important if you want your food to be stored long term. Food storage is an investment worth protecting.
Determination of Mylar bag quality
Mylar bags can be purchased in a variety of thicknesses. The higher the mil rating, the thicker and stronger the Mylar bag. We recommend 5 mil or 7 mil bags for packaging dry goods for long term storage.
You can buy quality mylar bags for long term storage online. We are satisfied with the excellent quality of the bags we bought from Wallaby. Wallaby sells high quality 5 gallon and 1 gallon Mylar bags in kits that contain properly sized oxygen absorbers. Use promo code PROVIDENT5 to get a discount.
Mylar bag size options
If you look for Mylar bags, you will find that they come in different sizes. Consider the following when determining which size or sizes will best meet your long-term food storage needs.
1 gallon Mylar bag
1 gallon Mylar bags are a good size for packing a family’s staple grains and beans. The half gallon or liter size can be handy for packing smaller amounts for one or two people. There are some items such as spices or freeze-dried meat that it makes sense to pack in smaller quantities.
5 gallon Mylar bag for use in a plastic pail
A good way to package dry goods for long term storage is in a 5 gallon Mylar bag in a plastic bucket. The mylar creates an oxygen barrier that greatly reduces oxygen transmission over time, which can be a problem with plastic buckets. The bucket prevents rodents from chewing through the Mylar bags. If you’re interested in the longest possible shelf life, a Mylar bag in a plastic bucket is the way to go.
Customize your own Mylar bag size
You can buy the 1 gallon Mylar bags and then cut them into smaller sizes. The mylar seals easily when heat is applied. Simply take your flat iron, straightener or hair straightener and seal the edges to make a new pouch, add the kibble and seal the lid.
Vacuum sealable Mylar bags
Standard Mylar bags require an expensive off-the-shelf vacuum sealer to vacuum seal them. However, SteelPak Mylar bags can be vacuum sealed using a standard FoodSaver vacuum sealer. These bags are only 4 mil but good quality. Vacuuming the bags was a bit tricky, but the result was fantastic.
SteelPak Mylar bags are a great option if you don’t want to use oxygen absorbers. All you need are the SteelPak Mylar bags and a vacuum sealer.
Used Mylar bags
Another benefit of purchasing quality Mylar bags is that the bags are reusable. Simply cut off the lid near the seal and remove the contents. Wash the bag and let it dry completely. Then you can reuse the bag. Each time you reuse the bag, it will get a little bit smaller because you have to cut off the sealed part. However, if you can reuse the bag 3 or 4 times, they turn out to be relatively cheap.
Protection of Mylar bags during storage
Mylar bags or pouches should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place and protected from rodents. The bags must not come into contact with concrete floors or walls.
Mylar bags are NOT rodent proof!
One of the main disadvantages of using Mylar bags is that they are very susceptible to rodents. Mice can chew through a Mylar bag very quickly. Protect them by placing the bags in a sturdy tote bag, plastic bucket or metal barrel.
We have a friend who packed her grocery storage in Mylar bags and kept them in boxes at the top and back of closets. Recently she pulled them out and discovered that mice had eaten almost all of the food, shredded the bags and boxes, and were feeding on their precious food supplies.
How to Pack Dry Goods in Mylar Bags for Long Term Storage
Start by buying foods that store well for many years, such as wheat, white rice, oatmeal, pasta, dried beans, potato flakes, sugar, and freeze-dried foods. White flour, corn flour, and bean flour have a significantly shorter shelf life but can be safely packed in Mylar bags.
A clamshell heat sealer or an impulse sealer are the tools professionals use to seal Mylar bags. In our house we use a flat iron or hair straightener. An iron and a block of wood aren’t quite as handy, but will definitely get the job done.
Preserve with oxygen absorbers
Oxygen scavengers are an easy way to prevent insect infestations and preserve food quality for many years. A 300-500 cc oxygen absorber will work in a 1 gallon Mylar bag. You can use the same oxygen absorbers for smaller bags as well.
The 5 gallon Mylar bag in a bucket requires a 2000-3000 cc oxygen absorber. We used the 2000cc oxygen absorbers that came with the bags. The Mylar bag and oxygen absorber combo package that we used can be found here. We were very happy with the quality.
It might seem like a no-brainer to label the bag, but you really need to do this before you fill it. After the bag is sealed, it can be difficult to determine exactly what is inside. Labeling it first will prevent you from having “snack bags” in your grocery storage.
Fill the Mylar bags with dry food
It’s a lot easier to fill the pockets when you’re working with a buddy. One fills the bag while the other holds it open. Make sure you leave some extra space at the top. Using an iron to seal the pouch will take up more space than a flat iron. You’ll have it under control after just a few bags.
When using SteelPak Mylar bags with a vacuum sealer, you need to leave more room at the top than when heat sealing the bags.
Give oxygen absorbers over food
Once all the bags are filled, open the packet of oxygen absorbers and place an absorber on top of the food. Quickly seal the unused absorbers in a small mason jar or vacuum seal them in a bag. I have a special Mylar pocket clip that I use to close the end of the pocket. This protects the oxygen absorbers and allows for easy access.
Seal the Mylar bags
It’s important to seal the bags quickly to allow the oxygen absorbers to do their job. When we were working at the cannery sealing the bags, they told us not to leave them out for more than 30 minutes. I don’t make more bags than I can seal in 10-15 minutes.
Mylar bags are designed to be sealed with a clamshell heat sealer or an impact heat sealer. Most of us don’t have such things lying around, so we’re content with simple household appliances.
Sealing Mylar bags with an iron
My favorite method of sealing Mylar bags is with a flat iron or hair straightener. This is easy while the bag is standing upright. Just bring the edges together and try to expel excess air. Then, using the flat iron, staple the mylar bag to the center of the top. Next, staple it around the quarter and three-quarter points. This ensures that no difficult bubbles are trapped in the seal.
Once the top seam is tacked in those three places, simply slide the flat iron over the top until fully sealed. Gently squeeze the bag to see if there are any areas for air to escape from the bag. If so, simply reapply the straightener until it’s fully sealed.
Sealing Mylar bags with an iron
A commercial iron can be used to seal the Mylar bags. I find this a bit more difficult because you have to hold the bag upright to avoid spilling the contents. Alternatively, you can put less food in the bag to get the job done.
Take a board or solid heat-resistant surface and place the top of the bag where you want the seam to be. Smooth out the seam and pin the mylar in the center. Then at the quarter and three-quarter mark. This will help prevent bubbles in your seam. Next, run the iron along the edge of the top seam until it’s completely sealed. Check this by squeezing the bag slightly and seeing if air escapes. Reseal if necessary.
Vacuum sealing of Mylar bags
Most household vacuum sealers do not seal standard Mylar bags. You can buy a commercial vacuum sealer that can do this, but they tend to be unaffordable for many of us.
SteelPak Mylar bags are designed to be used with a FoodSaver vacuum sealer. We have had great success with these bags. It can be just a little tricky, but after a few bags we had the system shut down.
Store filled Mylar bags in a rodent-proof container
Once the bags are filled and sealed, it takes about 4 hours to reach maximum oxygen uptake. You will find that the sides of the Mylar bag will suck in and you will be able to see the indentations of the food products inside.
It is best to pack them in a rodent-proof container before this happens. When first packed, the bags are flexible and can be assembled fairly easily. After 4 hours they are rigid little building blocks that are a bit more difficult to snap together in a tote bag or bucket.
A 5 gallon Mylar bag wrapped in a plastic pail is a great option. This combination makes the best use of the space inside the plastic bucket with very little wasted space.
Creative prepper applications for mylar bags
Mylar bags provide an effective moisture, light and oxygen barrier. They are great for protecting your food supply, but can be valuable in other applications as well.
Depending on what you’re storing in the bag, you may want to include a desiccant pack. Desiccant protects against moisture. You can buy desiccant packs here.
Get creative and discover how Mylar bags can be very useful in your emergency preparedness efforts. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
• Depending on the location of your survival cache or shelter, valuable tools may be at risk from high levels of humidity in the air. Mylar bags are a great way to protect items you might want to store in a survival cache from moisture, light and air.
• Firearms and other weapons can be protected from salt, moisture and the environment in a Mylar bag with an internal desiccant packet to control internal moisture. This can reduce the risk of rusting. You can find a SafeCache gun storage bag kit here. The kit comes with a desiccant pack and oxygen absorbers.
• Protect important documents from moisture in Mylar bags. It’s always a good idea to organize critical documents and keep a copy in a safe place. You could seal the copies in a Mylar bag and put them in an opaque place. Nobody would guess. Learn more about organizing your critical documents at; How to organize important documents for emergency evacuation.
• Mylar bags are a great way to seal documents, photos, cash and valuables for stashing in your survival kit. It can also prevent stealing cash from the kits.
• A few good can openers, a pair of scissors, a sturdy bucket opener, and a good knife can be invaluable in a crisis. Package them in a Mylar bag with a desiccant packet and add them to your long-term survival supply.
• Mylar bags provide an ideal long term seed storage environment. DO NOT use oxygen absorbers or vacuum sealers. seeds live. The Mylar bags protect the small seeds from light, moisture and air. You can seal seeds in the bag either directly or in paper envelopes.
Use your imagination and I am sure you will come up with a multitude of ways to use Mylar bags in your prep.
It’s time to stock up and start building your long-term food supply!
Our goal is to stock up on basic, life-sustaining groceries for a rainy day. We stock staples like wheat, rice, oats, pasta, beans, sugar, salt, and potato flakes. With proper packaging and storage, these items have a shelf life of 25-30 years. Mylar bags can be an effective way to wrap groceries for long-term storage.
