Wedding car traditions and etiquette

Ribbons for wedding cars. Have you ever wondered why wedding cars have bows? Well, it has an interesting history that has its origins in early weddings in the western world. Here the color white symbolized purity, hence the white wedding dress we all know.

But it wasn’t just the wedding dress. As white ribbons were also used to indicate that a bride is to marry. Hence, she was adorned with the mode of transport she used.

So, over time, wedding transport developed into a classic wedding car. Most are still decorated with ribbons to pay homage to this longstanding tradition.

Top wedding car colors to choose from

There used to be no choice for the color of your wedding car. From the time cars came out until the mid 1970s, the only choice for a wedding car was a black car. This makes black a classic color. Nothing looks bad with black as it goes with everything, but in the 1970s people started to have a choice. This is when white wedding cars first appeared. Now brides could choose between black and white depending on their personal preferences.

Today there are many more colors to choose from for the big day. Now it is common to see black, white, silver, pink, champagne and others. Each color gives your event its very own charm. Mixing and matching bride and groom and wedding party cars can be a fun way to accessorize every detail of your day. We recommend visiting Melbourne Chauffeur Driven Limousines and Buses before your big day so you can select the right color car for your event.

car coaster

I was browsing Etsy a while ago and found car coasters. And not just car coasters… GLITTER CAR COASTER!

I fell in love instantly and knew this would be the perfect addition to my car. They are made from tough epoxy and are perfect for any car. There are SO many variations and possibilities with glitter car coasters – you will be blown away!

If you are looking for an excellent seller with excellent service, Jackie is your friend. She sells the widest variety of colors of car coasters I have ever seen and she really is just a gem. Check out her glitter coasters in her shop, I know you’ll love them! She also offers a 10% discount to all my readers (use code PRACTICAL at checkout).

My 10-year-old daughter was so funny the other day when she said, “Did you know that glitter has been shown to release serotonin into your body, which is why it makes you so happy?!”

Well girl, I have no idea if that’s true or not, but glitter makes me happy…so I’ll take it!

Personalized car fresheners

Everyone loves when their car smells amazing, but why not let your air freshener serve as both a photo AND an air freshener?! This is an extremely popular item on Etsy and it’s not hard to see why. I LOVE this cute personalized photo air freshener and I just love seeing this picture of my husband and I in my car.

glitter mug

Now for my very favorite part of this post – my glitter mug! The current trend of glitter mugs is one of my favorite trends in a LONG time! I’m literally obsessed with them!

I found a particular store called Sparkle Shimma that I’ve used a few times and I’ve been so pleased not only with the mugs themselves but also with their customer service! She made my Pink Leopard Glitter Tumbler for me.

These car accessories don’t necessarily have to stay in the car, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt to have a few!

I am personally obsessed with custom glitter mugs. (Remember glitter = serotonin = happiness?!)

I like to match them to my car’s theme every once in a while and it really adds an extra fun look to your car accessories.

Here is a link to all the glitter mug sellers I have in this post:

After learning about the lengthy process of making these mugs, I really appreciated what a true art it is!

Of course, my cup has to match the decoration in my car! 🤓 This is the best way to personalize your car in my opinion!

Car phone accessories

Car phone accessories are a staple when it comes to our cars. Heaven forbid we’ll run out of battery on our phone! 😂

I also hate holding my phone while driving and following google maps to my destination. So I bought an awesome phone holder to attach to my car vents. I like that it’s not a permanent solution like gluing something to your dashboard.

I bought my phone holder from Target at their dollar spot, but you can find tons of different options on Amazon too. I used a faux leather glitter sheet I found at the Hobby Lobby to dress up my phone holder and make myself a tassel keychain with this tutorial.

Keychain accessories

There’s this hilarious joke in my family where my husband absolutely hates bulky keychains – or keychains at all – and I absolutely love them! He hates carrying them around and how they fill up his front pocket. So maybe keychains aren’t for everyone. 😂

But if you want to learn how to make your own leather keychains, check out my keychain tutorial.

I mentioned this in a previous post, but one of my favorite nuisances is when I lose my lip balm! I found this amazing shop on Etsy that has the best lip balm keychains! They’re faux leather and she makes them herself!

Now I will never lose my lipstick again! Hopefully.

Headrest collars

Do you remember that I love everything shiny? I was looking for products to enhance and personalize my car interior! I found these super cute rhinestone headrest collars that are just perfect! I love her!

They’re really easy to install. All you have to do is push that little lever on the underside of the headrest bar and pull the headrest out. Place the headrest boots onto the silver bars and replace the headrest until it clicks into place.

And viola!

air freshener

You could have the cleanest car in the world, but if it stinks like sweaty soccer players, it doesn’t matter how clean it is. It won’t feel clean!

Smell is such an important element to enjoy staying in your car. My favorite car fresheners are from Bath and Body Works! They always have such amazing scents and I even love their vacation car air vent clips.

Bath and Body Works usually has special offers so keep an eye out for these and grab a few. They are such a fun way to customize your car.

Because I love leopard prints, I just fell in love with this cute car freshener diffuser. And guess what?! It is encrusted with rhinestones! It goes so well with my Leo glitter mug.

Other ideas

There are so many other car decoration ideas and so many car decorations that you could buy or create.

You could get a steering wheel cover you love, seat covers in your favorite color or pattern, or (for your car’s exterior) a license plate cover!

Once you start searching, creating, or shopping, you’ll find tons of fun car decoration ideas that the whole family will love.

My favorite organizational tip

I would like to mention an organizational tip that I forgot to add to my post on car organization. This one is great for keeping all your car documents perfectly organized.

Get a file folder that you can keep in the storage compartment on your dashboard or slide under a seat in your car. Separate your documents according to maintenance receipts, vehicle registration etc.

So if you’re stopped by a cop, you’ll know exactly where your insurance and registration papers are! 😉

Decoration for the holidays

This idea may seem ridiculous to some, but I love holidays and seasons. My favorite holidays and seasons to decorate are Fall, Halloween, and Christmas.

You might think that decorating your car for a holiday is just a bit much. But is it!?

Think about it…we decorate our homes, our phone wallpapers, our bathrooms, and sometimes even our bedrooms. And so many of us spend a lot of time in the car. So why not decorate the car?!

So that’s exactly what I did. I’m not going crazy… I just added a few small touches to my car to make it look a little more festive for each of these holidays. And it makes me so happy inside!

I love the looks I get when people pull up next to me at traffic lights and see our life-size skeleton, Mr. Bones, in the passenger seat. It puts a smile on their faces… and mine too!

If you love the holidays and want to infuse this celebration into all corners of your life, you should consider changing things up in your car interior to give it a custom decorative look depending on the season.

Decorate your car for fall

So, like I mentioned before, I always try to be cute and not cheesy. I’m pretty picky about the things I decorate. They are just small details, not an overwhelming decoration.

Here are the things I added to my car to decorate for fall:

It’s Fall Y’all Glitter Tumbler

Leaf Glitter Car Coasters

Autumn keychain (tutorial here)

Autumn car fragrances by Bath and Body Works

Decorate your car for Halloween

Like I said, my favorite thing to see is random drivers’ reactions when they see my full-size skeleton in my passenger seat. You get quite a kick out of it and it’s the perfect touch for Halloween!

Here’s what I’m adding to my car for the Halloween season:

Hocus Pocus glitter mug

Pumpkin Straw Topper

Glitter Car Coasters

Halloween keychain (tutorial here)

Autumn car fragrances by Bath and Body Works

Gold painted skeletons to hang on the rear view mirror (dollar tree)

Full-size skeleton for the driver’s seat

Decorate your car for Christmas

Christmas makes even Scrooge festive, so here are some decorating ideas for things to add to your car during the holiday season:

Buffalo Plaid Christmas Car Glitter Tumbler

Red Glitter Car Coasters

Christmas tree ornaments (from Hobby Lobby) to hang on the rear-view mirror

Christmas Car Fragrance by Bath and Body Works

Christmas Car Clip (for fragrance) by Bath and Body Works

Christmas keychain (instructions here)

While decorating your car is obviously not necessary, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel like their car interior is truly an extension of them.

I hope you enjoyed this post and I appreciate you taking my teenage antics with humor as I decorate my car and add a little bling-bling to my otherwise boring car interior.

If you like any of these decorating ideas, I highly encourage you to check out the products I linked or search for things that fit your personal style.

Decorating your vehicle might seem a bit over the top, but I promise it will make you happy every time you get in your car.

What type of ribbon is used for wedding cars?

What type of ribbon is used for wedding cars?

Wedding bands are usually 38mm wide and made of satin material. As a result, they are generally comfortable and soft to the touch, reducing any friction against wedding car paintwork.

Wedding Car Ribbon How-To

Whether you’ve chosen your dad’s favorite car, a vintage Rolls Royce, or a sparkling black BMW, adding a white bow to the front of the bride’s car is a wonderful wedding tradition!

Today we are sharing how to attach a wedding band to the front of the bridal car:

Step 1: Choose your wedding car strap before your big day. We recommend a strong ribbon of at least 60m. Stay away from paper or plastic ribbons as they can break during application and remove paint from the bonnet of the wedding car.

Step 2: The night before your wedding, unroll the ribbon and place magazines on the unrolled ribbon. This process helps reduce the number of wrinkles on the ribbon.

Step 3: Take one end of the ribbon and tie it around the sun visor hinge, making sure it is nice and tight.

Step 4: Pull the tape through the door frame and leave the door open. Then throw the tape over the hood of the car.

Step 5: Open the hood

Step 6: Align the ribbon and lift the hood, thread the ribbon through the hood. Secure the strap in the hood.

Step 7: Hold the hood up, we recommend using a water bottle or something similar to hold the hood open

Step 8: Tie the strap to the hinge of the other sun visor.

Step 9: Take out the prop and close the hood.

Step 10: The car is now ready to transport the wedding couple on their special day!

Wedding car traditions and etiquette

tin cans

The practice of tying cans is believed to date back to Egyptian times.

Back then, women were still the father’s property, and when a man and a woman got married, it was customary for the father to present the new son-in-law with a pair of his daughter’s sandals.

This symbolized that she now belonged to him

The importance of shoes continued through the centuries, but people would throw shoes at the carriage and it was considered good luck if the shoes hit them. These evolved into being attached to the back of the car and eventually became tin cans because of the noise.

Recently, the tin cans are rarely seen due to the potential for damage to a vehicle or bystander.

When Prince William and Kate Middleton wed in 2011, the couple left Buckingham Palace in an Aston Martin, the newlyweds driving down the Mall in the car with a ‘JUST WED’ sign and balloons and ribbons streaming from the rear.
