ABS-CBN TV Plus (formerly Sky TV+ and stylized as ABS-CBN TVplus, repackaged in 2021 as ABS-CBN TVplus Digital TV Receiver) is a Philippine ISDB-T encrypted digital terrestrial television provider, the ABS-CBN Convergence, a Subsidiary of ABS-CBN Corporation. The service distributes digital set-top boxes with freemium and free-to-view digital TV channels, broadcast markup language, emergency warning broadcast system and pay-per-view services in select areas in the Philippines. In order to use the service, users must purchase an ABS-CBN TVplus set-top box and activate it via the ABS-CBNmobile SIM card; Activation requirements for the digital channels over other cellular networks later became available around the second quarter of 2018.

ABS-CBN Corporation applied to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for a license to operate a digital terrestrial television service in the country back in 2007.[4] ABS-CBN planned to use multiplex to offer ABS-CBN, the defunct Studio 23 (now S+A) and 5 additional specialty television channels. The conglomerate expects to spend around £1bn annually on its DTT switch over the next five years.[5] ABS-CBN used UHF channel 51 Manila (695.143 MHz), later UHF channel 43 (647.143 MHz), for test broadcasts in DVB-T format. ABS-CBN was scheduled to begin digital test broadcasts in January 2009.[4][6]

In 2010, the NTC announced that it would officially adopt Japan’s ISDB-T standard for digital broadcasting and issued a circular to direct television networks across the country to shut down their analog services at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 2015 . Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8).[7] Due to constant delays in the publication of the implementing rules and regulations for digital television broadcasting, the target date has been pushed back to 2023.[8]

In April 2011, ABS-CBN announced further details of its DTT plans, which will offer ABS-CBN and Studio 23 (now S+A). Five new channels will be available exclusively to its digital users, to be offered once digital broadcast begins. The range of specialty television channels includes a news channel, two youth-oriented channels, an education channel and a film channel. ABS-CBN also plans to use the 1seg broadcast standard (single segment) for handheld devices.[9][10][11][12]

The set-top box then known as TV+ was demoed on ABS-CBN’s morning show Umagang Kay Ganda on March 22, 2012, where they offered free samples to their studio audience.[13] Since then, until its official launch, TV+ was distributed as a prize for the quiz segment of DZMM’s “Failon Ngayon sa DZMM” and “Ang Mahiwagang Blackbox” (The Magical Blackbox).

On December 18, 2014, the NTC issued the implementing rules and regulations for digital terrestrial television broadcasting in the country.[14] ABS-CBN Corporation officially launched ABS-CBN TVplus on February 11, 2015 with a broadcast ceremony at the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center.[15][16]

In July 2015, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) signed a memorandum of agreement with ABS-CBN to include the Emergency Warning Broadcast System (EWBS) in ABS-CBN TVplus. The feature was enabled through an over-the-air update during the Metro Manila wide shake drill on July 30.

In March 2016, to celebrate its one-year anniversary, a redesigned version of the set-top box was released, featuring a new processor and support for both HDMI and HDTV resolutions. The latter feature was later removed when TVplus was priced lower in Q4 2016.

In May 2016, TVplus was awarded two bronze Stevies for “Best in New Product Innovation” and “Best in Branded Development” at the Asia Pacific Stevie Awards 2016.[17]

Recently [when?] TVplus updated ABS-CBN’s main channel by placing its regional network feed in provinces that have its audience.

On July 30, 2018, ABS-CBN TVplus ran a free trial of the new freemium channels on UHF channel 16 (485.143 MHz). It includes cable channels from sister company Creative Programs: O Shopping (also aired as a nighttime program for ABS-CBN), Jeepney TV and Myx (which previously had a free channel Myx2 before TVplus launched in 2015). Also included are two new exclusive digital channels, Asianovela Channel and Movie Central. Initially, the five new channels will be broadcast from Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and Cagayan de Oro, with plans to expand coverage to existing ABS CBN DTV stations.[18][19][20]

On November 10, 2018, ABS-CBN TVplus launched its digital service in Batangas, making it its 16th signal coverage area.[21]

On June 1, 2019, ABS-CBN launched a digital TV dongle called ABS-CBN TVplus Go for Android smartphones. It was originally available in Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga, Benguet, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Iloilo, Bacolod, Metro Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Metro Davao.[22]

As of February 2020, ABS-CBN TVplus has sold over 9 million units of its set-top boxes.[23][24]

On May 5, 2020, ABS-CBN TVplus was affected by the cease and desist order (CDO) issued by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and Attorney General Jose Calida due to the expiration of ABS-CBN’s franchise (non-renewable franchise prior to expiration date) . The main channel of ABS-CBN and S+A as well as the regional digital stations operated by ABS-CBN ceased broadcasting. Some TVplus channels resumed broadcasting on May 8, but in limited coverage (Metro Manila, Laguna Province, Iloilo Province, and select areas of Baguio) through a block-time agreement with an unnamed third party. On June 1, 2020, Jeepney TV and Asianovela Channel resumed broadcasting, taking over the channel slots from ABS-CBN and S+A, respectively.

All you have to do is:

Go to your TV’s HDMI settings

Turn on the crate

Go to the settings on the box and connect to the internet using either Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

If your router is next to your TV, it is always better to connect directly to the router via Ethernet. If your router is far away and you need to connect via Wi-Fi, you can consider using boosters, also known as home plugs. You must plug these directly into household outlets, not into extension cords. We always recommend the boosters that double as adapters so you don’t lose an outlet.

How easy is it to use?

Well, it’s different being TV by app: you have to switch from one app to another to get your content. While you might be used to channeling from one provider, here you have many providers, so content requires you to switch between apps – let’s call it app hopping. While we said don’t let a fancy name for a box fool you, look at the spec. If a seller has a great name for their box but is a little shy about the spec sheets, there may be a good reason for the shyness. Chipsets and processors will change over time, so compare those differences. RAM is important, always make sure it’s 2GB for best performance. Storage space isn’t all that important if you’re only using the box as a streaming box, but 16GB is always a good thing to look for.

The cost of a box

Now it would be easy if you could compare apples to apples, but we recommend weighing everything before making a decision.

The general answer is yes. All major TV manufacturers routinely release updates to their smart TV software, adding new features, refining old ones, and fixing bugs and security issues, just like any other operating system. The online ads sound too good to be true.

“Say goodbye to your cable bills and get your TV for free,” boasts an advertisement for Free TV Box in Canada.

A US company advertises its TV box as a “cable killer”.

“You’ll have instant access to any episode of any TV show… and never pay a monthly bill!” promises the company’s website.

Customers have to pay for the device, which sells for around $100 to $200 depending on the model. But the promise of TV with no monthly bills is real, and it’s a fast-growing business.

Here’s how it works: Providers start with a simple Android TV box. The devices are similar to Apple TV, but use the Android operating system. That means providers can load them with special software, giving the gadget access to an almost unlimited number of TV shows and movies.

Customers connect the loaded box to their TV and stream whatever they want, ad-free. There are no monthly fees, just the cost of purchasing the device.

The device could pose a threat not only to cable companies but also to video streaming services.

“It works very much like Netflix, except you get to watch what you want to watch,” said Joel Adams, who sells preloaded Android boxes online from his home in Hubbards, N.S.

“And it’s free.”

So what’s the catch? Turns out legally there may not be one in Canada, at least not yet. Yes, sometimes customers view copyrighted content, but they don’t download that material. You stream it, and streaming falls into a legal gray area.

“It’s not illegal,” claims Adams. “It’s up to you to decide if it’s immoral.”

The free TV business

Adams runs his company, Astro TV Boxes Canada, as a side job, but he says business is doing so well that he made more money selling his boxes last month than he did from his full-time job at a printing shop.

“It’s pretty amazing,” he says of his product. “I think that’s why they’re selling so well.”

The entrepreneur explains that he orders Android boxes from China and then loads them with extra software and apps. Its most popular model costs around $120.

According to Adams, customers can use the device to access almost any current show or movie, or ones that have been popular in the past. He uses his box to watch popular series like Dr. Watch Who, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

“I haven’t had a cable in a long time,” he said. One of the loaded Android boxes that Joel Adams from Nova Scotia sells online through his home based business.

Adams explains that the box’s apps provide access to massive content libraries. The content comes mostly from material that people around the world have uploaded and made available on file sharing websites.

When a viewer enters a show title in the field and performs a search, numerous links are presented. The person then clicks a link and streams the show. But, Adams warns, not every link works.

“If not, you try the next one. Eventually you always find one that works,” he said.

Viewers can already access various free streaming services online — and could just plug their computer into a TV monitor — but Adams says the benefit of the loaded box he’s selling is that it consolidates a large amount of content in one place .

“It’s just a lot more convenient,” he says.

“We even abolished Netflix”

Jenna Galloway says she recently watched the movie Zoolander 2 on her Android TV Box. The blockbuster is still in cinemas in Canada.

She’s also watching the latest season of UK show Call the Midwife, which airs in Canada next spring.

“It’s crazy. It’s already paid off,” she said.

Galloway, located in Cole Harbour, N.S. lives, says she quit her cable two years ago. She found her TV bill too high, so she signed up with Netflix instead.

But in September, Galloway had to be on bed rest for two months during her pregnancy, so she bought the box to fill the time. Now, she says, it’s all her family uses to watch TV shows and movies.

“We even abolished Netflix,” she admits.

“I don’t know what we would do without it.”

Galloway says she convinced many of her friends and family to buy the box too.

is it legal

As the loaded Android box business grows, so do the legal issues.

Many of the shows customers watch are said to be viewed by paying cable or streaming service subscribers who have distribution deals with the content owners.

Canadian copyright law prohibits unauthorized downloading of copyrighted content. But viewers using a loaded Android box are only streaming, not downloading any material.

“Streaming falls a bit into that gray area,” says internet law expert Michael Geist.

That’s because streaming video could be viewed as a “temporary, transient display,” he says.

“It’s not called copyright law for nothing, and of course the question arises as to whether a copy is being made at all or an infringing copy in a streaming context,” said the University of Ottawa professor.

Copyright attorney Ariel Thomas of the Ottawa law firm Fasken Martineau agrees. “Receiving a stream in itself is not subject to copyright law,” she said.

However, she argues that the loaded Android boxes could potentially run into problems. That’s because the law bans services designed primarily to “enable copyright infringement.”

But the Android boxes can also stream a lot of legal content, such as YouTube videos and Netflix shows.

Geist notes that the only party clearly violating the law is the websites offering the content for streaming.

“If they’re doing this without permission, they’re violating, and there are laws that can address that,” he said.

But many of the streaming sites operate outside of Canada’s borders.

CBC News called on the federal government to weigh the legality of streaming.

“Whether a particular website, app or service infringes copyright is a matter for the courts to determine on a case-by-case basis,” Canadian Heritage spokesman Simon Rivet said in an email.

Will Cable Kill Free TV?

Adams believes if anyone can shut down their business, it will be the cable companies.

“I’m sure they will do something about it,” he said.

That’s why he doesn’t give up his job.

Galloway also worries that the day may come when loaded Android boxes go out of business.

She says if that happens she won’t regret it because she’s already gotten her money’s worth.

“Even if I get a year of it, even if I get six months of it, it’s worth it,” she said.
