Typically as a general rule 24 – 48 hours immediately after purchase and after each use. It is also recommended to charge for approximately 12 hours every 30-60 days or until the battery status indicators show full when the product is not in use. Regularly charging the jump starter maximizes the internal battery’s efficiency, ensures it’s always ready when you need it and greatly extends its lifespan.

How do I know when my jump starter is fully charged?

All CAT jump starters have battery status indicators. Our devices may have 2-4 LED indicators depending on the model and when all LEDs are on and the green LED is on or flashing, the device is fully charged. These gauges are like a battery “fuel gauge” showing how much charge the internal battery currently has.

What happens if I connect my jump starter the wrong way around?

It is very important to read the safety instructions and the user manual first. All CAT jump starters have reverse polarity alarms. This will give you an audible alarm and a visual indicator when you reverse connect the cables until you disconnect them. Note that the device must be in the OFF position when you first connect it to the battery. Reversing the polarity of a jump starter that is in the ON position when plugged in may cause irreparable damage and will void the product warranty.

What is the difference between a jump starter and a battery charger?

A jump starter is a product that has an internal portable battery with jumper cables attached that requires charging and can charge a vehicle without requiring another vehicle or connecting to the household network. Submitted By: Happy FVing Great product, we use it all the time in our RV. The only HUGE MISTAKE they made was putting the LED light on the front. It should be on the back so you can see what you are doing when pumping up the tires in dusty conditions or at night. I’m sure other buyers found this out as I did when they had to put air in a tire at night. I noticed that they still haven’t fixed this bug on the latest model.

I only charged it once, on the day I bought it. With that one charge, I could start multiple vehicles at least a dozen times, inflate two tires, and run a hair dryer on them during a power outage. Today the power was low and it still allowed me to jump my car. Today is the first day in years that I’ve had to charge it. And even if I hadn’t charged it, I think it would have jumped a few more vehicles before the battery died.

We have a number of extension cords lying around that can be used. And if you don’t charge it, it’s your own fault.

In fact, it’s had quite a bit of use for everything from powering a TV/satellite box during a power outage to boosting, charging portable USB devices when I didn’t want to run a power cord and inflate tires. While this device is versatile, it doesn’t seem overly robust. I own many worn out vehicles, trailers, wagons, rec toys, etc. I always seem to have a tire or two that needs air. I used it quite often for this task and in less than a year the compressor literally broke. It was also annoying that the compressor slowed down before breaking at a certain pressure and took quite a long time for just one tire. I still rate it as pretty good and pretty handy, but more for a typical homeowner. My use of the compressor would be more than typical I would say.

Submitted By: Rey M I bought my CAT CJ1000DCP from COSTCO last year around November 2018. Read the manual first and see what came with it. I read some reviews from other people that theirs didn’t come with charging cables. I think some models don’t come with cables like it says in the manual, it just so happened that the DCP models came with it. Again, the manual states that although the device came charged in the box, it’s still best to charge it before use. I charged mine and it took almost 24 hours for the battery bar icon to stop flashing meaning it was fully charged. One day my sister’s car battery died and I used this device for the first time ever and the battery icon still shows full bars. The next day while I was gardening I pulled out my L1 Compact Bose speaker rated at 200W, plugged it into my CAT Power Station and played my music playlist for 4 hours. When I was done gardening I unplugged my iPhone and the speaker and battery icon is still showing 3 bars, the 3rd bar was flashing so the power station might have a little over half charge left. So far this product is working well for me. The only downside is that the letters in the manual are just too small. Had a headache just reading all this. 🙁

The manual type has a ridiculously small font size of about 5. I had to take photos of pages with my iPhone to expand them so I could read them. The documentation sucks. For anyone else who had this problem, for me the problem was that I had accidentally pressed the “USB” button so the USB ports were active. You can press the LED and USB buttons to turn it on and off. but while one of them is on, the device will not turn itself off. Press the USB and LED buttons until their lights aren’t on, wait a while and it should turn off automatically.

When the wires are crossed

Once you have the positives connected, setting up the negative wire and accidentally touching it with the other parts of the car won’t mess things up.

If you get in your car, turn on the ignition and nothing happens, what do you do? It could be that your battery is empty. If you don’t have jumper cables in the vehicle, or simply don’t have one, one way to get the car running again is to push or start it.

Jump over a dead car battery

If your battery dies, all you need to start is another car to bridge your battery and the cables needed to connect. It’s always best to keep a pair of cords in your vehicle in case you or someone else needs a jump. Once you’re ready to drive both, to jump your car, do the following:

Bring the engines close First, bring the working car engine close to your own. It’s fine to park either parallel or across from your car, but ideally the two motors should be within two feet of each other.

Turn off power: Next, turn off both vehicles.

Connect positive to positive: Start by connecting the positive (often red) terminals on the jumper cables to the positive posts on your battery. These are often marked, but they can be difficult to spot. Be sure to look closely to ensure you are connecting the correct part of the battery.

Connect negative to negative: Connect the negative (often black) terminals of the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the live battery. In your car, stick the negative pole on an unpainted metal surface.

Safety first: remember that when connecting the positive cables to the batteries, you should always connect the dead battery first. If you inject energy into the cables before they are connected to your battery, you can create a safety hazard. Before attempting to jump start a car, remember that batteries produce flammable gases. How to stay safe:

Check battery and jumper cables

Never attempt to start a battery that looks damaged or is leaking.

Do not use damaged jump leads.

Stop using the jumper cables when they get hot.

Make sure the environment is safe

Before you begin, remove any hanging items of clothing – such as a scarf or tie – as they could become caught in the moving engine parts.

Do not allow metal objects to touch the car batteries – they could cause a spark and possibly explode the battery. This includes rings, necklaces, watch bands, hand tools, clips, stray wires, etc.

Never smoke or allow an open flame near a battery.

Carefully remove the jumper cables

Do not remove the jumper cables while the car engines are running. This can cause serious damage to the car’s electronics.

A step-by-step guide to starting a car

Find someone with a car who will be happy to help you. Your car must have a fully charged battery of the same voltage as yours (usually 12 volts).

1. Align both cars

Park both cars so their batteries are within easy reach (without the cars actually touching).

Leave the handbrakes on and the ignition off.

2. Connect the red jumper cable

Use the red jumper cable to connect the positive (+) terminal of the working battery to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.

3. Connect the black jumper cable

Take the black jumper cable and connect it to the negative (-) post of the working battery.

Then attach the other end to a ground point (unpainted metal on the engine block or chassis) well away from the dead battery and fuel system.

4. Start the other car

Leave both engines off and wait 3 minutes, then start the engine of the working car and let it run for 1 minute.

5. Start your car

Turn on the engine in the car with a dead battery.

6. Run both cars

Let both cars idle at a fast pace for about 10 minutes.

7. Power off and disconnect

Turn off the engines of both cars and carefully disconnect the cables in reverse order of how they were connected (first remove the black cable from your car and end with the red cable from the other car).

Make sure the wires don’t touch each other or both cars when removing them.

8. Restart your car

Try turning the keys in the ignition to see if your car starts.

9. Call for help

If your car won’t start, there is likely a more serious problem that requires professional help.

How to remove the jumper cables

You remove the jumper cables in the reverse order in which you attached them. But if you’re not sure, here are the steps:

Shut off the engines of both vehicles.

Disconnect the black jumper cable from the earth point.

Disconnect the other end of the black jumper cable from the negative (-) post of the work battery.

Disconnect the red jumper cable from the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.

Remove the other end of the red jump lead from the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.

How to start a car with a battery booster pack

It can be a good idea to have a car battery booster pack in your car. This way you can jump start your battery even if no other car can come to your rescue.

Before you begin, make sure:

The car battery does not look damaged and is not leaking.

They have discarded metal jewelry or watches, and removed loose clothing such as ties or scarves.

Steps to using a car battery booster

1. Check the battery booster

Make sure the pack is fully charged

Place the battery booster pack in a stable place. Do not put it on the engine as it may fall off when the engine is started.

2. Connect the red jumper cable

Connect the red positive (+) jumper cable from the battery pack to the positive (+) post of the car battery.

3. Connect the black jumper cable

Connect the black negative (-) jumper cable to a ground point on your car. Unpainted metal on the engine block or chassis is best.

4. Turn on the package

Once the battery pack is connected, turn on the pack.

5. Try to start the car

Try to start your car by turning the key in the ignition.

6. Run the engine

When the car starts, run the engine for about 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, switch off the boost pack and let the engine run for another 5 to 10 minutes.

8. Restart your car

Try turning the keys in the ignition to see if the car starts again.

What to do after you start your car

If you managed to start your car, the engine needs to be fully charged again.

Charge the engine by driving normally (not in stop-start traffic) for at least 30 minutes. You can also use a portable car battery charger to top up your battery charge.

How often should you change a car battery?

On average, batteries last between 5 and 7 years, but you should only change a car battery if it shows signs of wear.

If the battery is more than 5 years old and seems to be having trouble starting the car, have it checked. Better safe than sorry – it gets worse when there’s a roadside emergency or on a cold morning when you’re already late for work.
