When we first switched to the 3 and 9 liter bins we had high hopes that they would be recycled, but with China stopping accepting American plastics in 2018, we’re once again trying to change course and investigate , as we can find a plastic #1 or #2 that will work, or an old-school metal olive oil can. The metal can is a superior choice in terms of recycling and we can refill it with an inert gas when filling, but once opened customers would have to refill the container with gas to ensure freshness and that just seems too laborious . It’s never easy. The reason we like plastic is that it keeps the oil in an oxygen-free environment, meaning the oil stays fresh and usable for up to 4 years – because there’s no oxygen to break it down and it blocks all light . This is a huge improvement from the days when olive oil was only optimal for 1 year.

In addition, plastic weighs significantly less than glass, meaning less petrol/fuel is used when shipping our products and therefore a lower carbon footprint. Finally, because plastic is significantly cheaper on the front than glass or metal cans, we are able to offer our products more cheaply, which is always helpful when you are making a premium item that people traditionally don’t pay as much for as extra virgin olive oil is actually a much lesser product.
