U-Haul’s Motorcycle Trailer Is Really Good But You Can’t Ever Own One

On Sunday night I walked into the U-Haul location a few blocks away and dropped a whopping $15 to rent one of the company’s exquisite motorcycle transporters and another $8 for bonus insurance. Baller, I know. Having towed it empty for 250 miles and then loaded it up with a big Ducati for 250 miles, I’m a huge fan.

(Full Disclosure: I asked Ducati if I could rent something big and comfortable for an upcoming 5,000-mile two-wheel trip. I received approval to pick up a new Diavel 1260S from the company’s North American headquarters in the California Bay Area. I arranged my own rental of the trailer and paid for the fuel to collect it.)

Once on the trailer, there are D-ring tie-down brackets in all four corners, as well as sturdy railings on three sides of the trailer perfect for anchoring with ratchet straps.

Mounting this bike required four separate ratchet straps and a handlebar mounting device called Cycle Cynch. I brought some of my own ratchet straps, but the Ducati folks threw the Cycle Cynch and a pair of amazing Erickson self-locking ratchet straps in my gear to keep their bike safe and sound. These things are a game changer as you simply stretch the strap to the length you want, press the button to pull it taut, and tighten securely. The best part is that these straps don’t have a tail to tie off. Next level shit right here. I need to buy about half a dozen of these suction cups for my own garage.

I’m not an expert at towing bikes, but I routed the handlebar straps to each D-ring in the front corner and pulled the wheel into the trailer’s awesome built-in chock. I then wrapped a strap through one of the rear wheel’s spokes and pulled the bike tight to each of the rear corner D-rings. This should prevent the bike from moving fore and aft. The handlebar straps should help keep the bike from tipping over as long as they are tight enough to prevent the suspension from compressing over bumps in the road. Then, last but not least, I slipped a large 10,000-pound strap through the bike’s frame under the seat to keep the rear suspension from bouncing at all.

Are there better ways to manage a motorcycle on a trailer? Possibly, but this thing was rock solid all the way back to Reno.

Even with a fully loaded trailer and a lot more uphills than downhills on the way back from the Bay, I still managed MPG in the mid-twenties with this behemoth of a 540-pound bike on the trailer. I would really love to own one of these trailers, but U-Haul insists they will never be sold to the public. While it will sell its panel vans and vans to the public throughout the day, the company’s proprietary trailer designs will never be sold once they are phased out of the fleet. Well, it’s a good thing that it only costs $15 to rent one then. What’s the point of buying a trailer for a few thousand dollars when you can only get one on-demand for spare change? I’m a big fan of it.
