MG Tech – MGB Brake Master Cylinder Replacement – Bournemouth and Poole MG Owners Club

Roger Taylor rushes to the aid of club member Chris Adamson, who has discovered a build-up of brake fluid in the footwell of his MGB.

It didn’t take Roger long to diagnose the problem as a leaking seal on the master cylinder piston, a not uncommon situation when the piston rod corrodes over the years and wears down a gap in the rubber seal that allows fluid to leak – the only effective remedy is to replace the master cylinder.

This is located under the outside of the bonnet near the bulkhead next to the clutch master cylinder and under a protective cover that needs to be removed with the mounting bolts. First, however, the throttle cable bracket that attaches to the top of the cover must be removed.

Once the cover is off it is a good idea to remove as much liquid as possible from the cylinder reservoir to minimize spillage and then remove the grommet in the bulkhead behind the cylinder as this allows for more movement when removing the unit .

Next, loosen the cotter pin from the clevis pin that connects the brake pedal to the master cylinder piston rod and remove the clevis pin. Next, loosen the brake line that fits into the back of the cylinder and ultimately feeds fluid to the brakes.

The cylinder itself is held in place by two mounting bolts at the top and bottom of the cover housing. Once the cylinder is out it’s an opportunity to remove excess fluid in the base of the cylinder housing.

Originally, the master cylinder reservoirs were metal, but the only replacement parts available today are plastic, which has the advantage of making it easier to see the brake fluid level marked on the side.

The only component required from the old cylinder assembly is the rear T-piece that feeds into the brake line. When fitting to the new cylinder it is advisable to fit a new copper washer to ensure a good seal. It can be tightened once in place by accessing through the bulkhead from inside the vehicle.

Replacing the cylinder is quite a fiddly job and therefore requires some time and concentration. After installation, reassemble the tube and piston connections to ensure the system is fully connected.

In order to replace the brake fluid and bleed the brake system, the vehicle must be placed on wheel stands to gain access to the brake nipples on each wheel.

With the reservoir full, start with the near rear brake nipple and attach a bleed bottle before disconnecting to allow fluid and air to drain. A second person is required to press the brake pedal to pump fluid through the system to remove any air. Secure the nipple when no air bubbles remain.

Repeat this process on the other three wheels, remembering to keep the fluid reservoir full at all times – it will take two or more bottles of brake fluid to complete this.

After bleeding the brakes, the reservoir can be filled and the cap screwed on before replacing the bulkhead grommet and housing cap.

Roger recommends placing a brace (a piece of wood will do) between the brake pedal and the driver’s seat overnight to keep the system pressurized for 24 hours, which helps solidify brake feel.

A new master cylinder costs around £56 and takes around two hours to replace.

Assume that every part of your brake and clutch system is in “less than good condition.” Your current brake and clutch hydraulic system uses a brake fluid consisting essentially of glycol mixed with atmospheric air, and all in your Braking systems are made of either steel or iron, and every part of the system is likely to be riddled with corrosion. What I’m going to suggest won’t break your bank if you can do some of the work yourself. Your brake and clutch master cylinders will need to be replaced with new ones. Your hydraulic brake parts on the wheels, calipers on the front brakes and drum brakes on the rear wheels, and clutch slave cylinders will likely need to be replaced with new ones. The clutch and hydraulic hoses are also made of steel and are also full of corrosion. They are best changed. Your MGB hydraulics include three flexible hoses.
