In some areas you’ll just find yourself, so overrun it’s best to sit back and try to take out the enemy while your partner covers you, but keep an eye on the interface for hints if they need help. Others will have you stuck in the middle of a zombie swarm, frantically calling for your teammate to heal you both. Speaking of the UI, the game makes it easy to see what weapon your partner is using, how much ammo they have in the clip, how much reserve they have, and how healthy they are. After seeing it, I wonder why we haven’t seen more co-op games that do something similar.
However, there are a few issues with the user interface, namely article management is more of a chore than it needs to be. In the heat of a skirmish with a partner, it’s tedious to say, “Hold on, I need to move a few things in my inventory.”
One thing that struck me was the nice mix of levels and pace that the game offers. As the game begins in a more traditional way, with narrow corridors and infected dropping by from God knows where, you soon find yourself in an open swamp piloting a boat and collecting artifact pieces. There are even some rail car sequences where you and a partner use mounted weapons to take out walkers on motorcycles. Towards the end you’ll swear you’re playing a scene from Uncharted. And yes, there are even co-op quick time events, but thankfully they’re few and far between.

If you make it to the end of the game with your co-op partner, you will both be masters of communication and zombie survival strategy. Resident Evil 5’s story completely captivated me, and the beautiful cutscenes pushed things along at a Hollywood-like pace. I don’t care what the internet says; The cooperative gameplay was the best thing that could have happened to the series. It pushed the series into the next generation of games and laid the groundwork for further and larger cooperative experiences. While the journey may not be perfect, I would love to play through it again.
