Do Rice Krispies give you a pump?
But experts say while reaching for a Rice Krispies Treat before your workout is actually not a horrible option, it may not be the best choice either. One of the most popular videos showcasing the trend was posted by TikTok user @Ko0maa who claims the snack gives you “an insane pump” at the gym.
How To Read Kellogg’s Expiration Date Codes
The craze has been ramping up on TikTok recently, inspiring users to share their findings (both the good and the bad) on social media. But experts say reaching for a Rice Krispies Treat before a workout isn’t a terrible option, nor may it be the best choice.
One of the most popular videos showing the trend was posted by TikTok user @Ko0maa, who claims the snack will give you “a crazy pump” at the gym. The clip goes on to show him beating his personal weightlifting record after ingesting a Rice Krispies Treat before a workout. The post received more than 175,000 views and 14,000 likes.
“Trust me when I say it, Rice Krispies will give you the best workout,” Twitter user @s_terrazas pointed out.
Others are more skeptical. “I tried the Rice Krispies Treat before a workout. don’t get it 30 minute sugar high, then a sugar crash that ruined the back end of my workout. Not for me,” user @RickSegall wrote.
According to textbook nutrition standards, you should ideally eat a balanced meal of carbohydrates, protein, and fat about three hours before your workout, says Abbie E. Smith-Ryan, associate professor of exercise physiology in UNC Chapel Hill’s Department of Exercise and Sport Science and active researcher in the fields of sports nutrition and exercise performance.
When eating right before a workout, it’s best to focus on carbohydrates and proteins.
“A Rice Krispies Treat is mostly carbs, but it’s quick to digest, so it doesn’t cause any gastrointestinal distress,” she says. But it would be best to add some protein as well. “For example like a Greek yoghurt or that’s where the protein shakes come into play.”
While Rice Krispies treats before a workout may not be harmful, Michael Daignault, an emergency room physician and senior medical adviser at Reliant Health Service, doubts the trend is effective.
He suspects that the touted energy boost “is related to a brief sugar high plus a placebo effect through a perceived increase in performance.”
Daignault points out that everyone’s metabolism is different, so the best pre-workout meals may vary from case to case.
“We know there’s certainly a benefit to consuming post-workout protein in the form of a smoothie or meal. But as far as pre-workout goes, athletes’ preferences vary and can include training on an empty stomach, eating a small meal protein and good fat like avocado, or using a pre-workout supplement,” he says.
Deciding what’s best to eat before a workout also depends on what type of workout you’re going to be doing, says Smith-Ryan.
“I can probably handle more when I’m lifting weights than when I’m running,” she explains. Citing research, Smith-Ryan confirms that the best pre-workout foods vary from person to person.

What happened Rice Krispies?
Kellogg’s has responded to these tweets, admitting to a “temporary shortage of Rice Krispies” because of “supply constraints in manufacturing.” The company promises that it’s working as fast as it can to get shelves restocked, but there’s no estimated date for when production will get back to normal.

“[I] went to 3 different stores to find the cereal just to wipe the shelves clean,” @beckittyy tweeted with evident desperation. “[Tell] me why I see online there’s a freaking LACK.”
Similar sentiments abound on social media. People in the US and Canada find empty cereal shelves and tweet their frustration online. They all have the same question: Where did the Rice Krispies go? Here’s what you need to know about the ongoing shortage.
The Kellogg’s strike that started it all
As early as October 2021, 1,400 Kellogg’s workers went on strike over union negotiations. The strike lasted 71 days until December 2021, when both sides agreed to a new five-year deal. Because the strike has lasted so long, some Kellogg’s products, including Rice Krispies, have been in short supply as the company tries to catch up with production.
A lack of poorly timed ingredients
The strike is not the only reason for the shortage. The pandemic is also to blame: disrupted supply chains have made it harder to secure a wide range of groceries, and rice — obviously a key ingredient in Rice Krispies — is one of them.
In 2021, U.S. rice production fell well below the prior year, down 16 percent from 2020 and pushing up the cost of the 2021 rice crop. This year’s price for medium-grain rice, the variety used in Rice Krispies, “is expected to exceed last year’s [price] by about 15 percent,” said T. Randall Fortenbergy, a professor in Washington State University’s School of Economic Sciences.
Fortenbergy also pointed to the increased packaging costs and material shortages of cardboard and waxed paper – a.k.a. the things that make up a cereal box — which likely contribute to the lack of Rice Krispies. All of these things have conspired to drive up the price of your favorite cereal, a pinch some consumers are already feeling.
Twitter user @Imkita_N sums it up: “I want to faint every time I see the price of Original Rice Krispies 🥺🥺🥺.”
when is it over
Kellogg’s responded to those tweets, acknowledging a “temporary shortage of Rice Krispies” due to “manufacturing shortages.” The company promises it’s working to restock shelves as soon as possible, but there’s no estimated date when production will return to normal. In the meantime, Kellogg’s recommends using the “Where to buy” tool on its website, which shows if a product is in stock near you. You can also call your local shop directly.
Perhaps Kellogg’s can take inspiration from its competitor Post Consumer Brands, which faced a similar problem in January when a shortage of grape seeds sparked an online outcry from die-hard fans. About a month later, Post Consumer Brands announced plans to ramp up production to bring back an adequate supply of boxes to shelves by mid-March.
We can only hope the issue is resolved before Easter, so we have no shortage of Mini Egg Rice Krispie Treats. That would be too much to bear!

How to Freeze Crispy Rice Treats?
Drew Hawkins1 Community Answer
Freezing crunchy rice treats is a super easy way to store them until you’re ready to serve them. Use a knife to cut the pan of crispy rice treats into even squares before storing. Then place the squares in an airtight container or freezer bag. If using a container, fill it up with the treats layer by layer, then seal the top. Freezer bags are a great alternative if you can’t find the right size container or don’t want to store your containers long term. Simply fill a freezer bag with 1 or 2 layers of treats, squeeze out excess air and seal tightly. To help you keep track of the freshness of the treats, place a piece of masking tape on the top of the container and write today’s date. Then place the container in the freezer and keep the treats for up to 6 weeks. When you’re ready to eat them, simply take the treats out of the freezer and let them thaw on the counter for 15 minutes and enjoy!

Do Rice Krispies Expire or Go Bad?
Expiration dates mean stores cannot sell an item after that date. But sometimes expiration dates aren’t expiration dates at all. Rather, it is a matter of best-before dates, i. H. only up to this point in time is the quality of the respective article guaranteed. And unfortunately, this data is not used with any kind of cross-brand standardization.
However, Kellogg’s, which makes Rice Krispies, uses an “MMDDY” format, meaning the first two digits represent the month, the second two represent the day, and the last two represent the year. But that’s not always the most intuitive.
Do Rice Krispies expire? Most experts will agree that dry grain does not expire in a way that poses a risk to food safety. However, there are other external factors that should be considered when eating Rice Krispies after their “use by” date.
Spoiled Rice Krispies
Within reason, plain Rice Krispies will not go bad on their own without external factors affecting them. They can become stale and uncomfortable to eat. When in doubt, eat a few dry Krispies before pouring yourself a whole bowl. Here are some signs of spoilage, but they should cause you to throw the box away.
mistake
Anyone who has ever had moths in the pantry knows that they can very quickly become the bane of one’s existence, ruining perfect and sometimes even brand new food. Mealworms, weevils, and other insects can also get into your cereal boxes and eat your food before you do.
Always check the packaging for signs of insects before consumption. You don’t want to put a spoonful of Rice Krispies in your mouth and find your food moving.
Infected packages should be disposed of without further sorting. It is best to throw everything in the garbage outside or take out your kitchen waste immediately so that you no longer have bugs in your kitchen.
Mold
While this is usually more of an issue for packages that have already been opened, sometimes moisture can even seep into the sealed pouches that Rice Krispies are shipped in. If you find mold in your Rice Krispies, throw away the packaging immediately.
And while you don’t necessarily have to toss the trash outside like you would with bugs this time, you might still want to do so so you don’t have to see it in your kitchen trash anymore.
smelly
Sometimes granola just starts to smell funny. This is more common with cereals with added fruit or whole grain cereals. But even Rice Krispies can sometimes just start to smell funny.
If they start smelling, throw them out and don’t think twice about it. Your nose is telling you that something is wrong and you should trust it.
salmonella
This comes as a surprise to many people, but unfortunately salmonella does not only affect raw meat and vegetables. Salmonella can survive in dry, highly processed foods just as well as it can in raw meats and produce.
If your Rice Krispies smell like grass or paint, or look very oily, you should throw them away as they may have a salmonella infection.
How long do Rice Krispies really last?
Most cereals, unlike the milk they are so commonly paired with, last months or years past their sell-by or best-before date. However, cereals will certainly lose their freshness after this date, and Rice Krispies are no exception.
An unopened bag usually retains its quality for up to twelve months past the date on the packaging. Once opened, do not expect more than six months after opening before this obsolescence sets in. The best before date should be used as a guide rather than a strict rule.
Old Rice Krispies
Old rice krispies usually lose their flavor and may be a little less crispy when eaten. Again, if you eat a few dry kernels and find the flavor and texture acceptable, you can eat them as long as there are no other signs of spoilage.
But if the bland flavor and funky texture bother you, it’s best to just toss the box and buy a new one.
This is the best way to store Rice Krispies for longevity
Any cereal should be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Once you’ve opened your Rice Krispies, store them in a sealed container or use a clip to keep the bag closed. It’s also best to squeeze all excess air out of the bag before closing it to prevent it from going stale.
You should store them in your pantry and then keep your pantry closed to minimize light and heat, and exposure to moisture. If you live in a particularly humid environment, you should definitely invest in sealed plastic cereal containers.
Prepared Rice Krispies
If you’ve turned your Rice Krispies into Rice Krispy Treats or have a bowl of them that you’re not quite done with yet, there are a few ways to store them. An unfinished bowl of cereal will keep in the fridge for a few days if stored in an airtight container without spoiling.
However, your Rice Krispies will lose all crunchiness and turn into a slurry. It is therefore not recommended to do this. But they won’t kill you if you eat them.
When you make Rice Krispy Treats, they will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for a week or two. Do not refrigerate or freeze them as this will make them mushy.
Final Thoughts
Essentially, Rice Krispies will not deteriorate on their own without interference from outside factors such as insects, excess moisture, or bacteria. Storing Rice Krispies properly will minimize the risk of them going bad.
In most cases, you only have to deal with stale Rice Krispies when the use-by date on the packaging has passed. At this point you can decide whether or not they are still edible.

Why are my Rice Krispie Treats hard?
While it’s tempting to get your granola treats ready as soon as possible, keep the heat low when preparing the treats on the stovetop.
If you rush things and turn the heat up to medium or high, the temperature of your marshmallows will get too hot, basically turning the sugar in the marshmallows into hard candies, creating hard Rice Krispie treats.
Even when melting butter and marshmallows in the microwave, we start with just a minute of cooking time to avoid overheating. Remove the marshmallows and stir, smashing the marshmallows with the back of your spoon or spatula to allow the residual heat to melt them all.
If all of the marshmallows aren’t melting, you can heat them on high power in 15-second intervals, stirring occasionally, until melted.
We’ve seen recipes telling you to heat your marshmallows for up to 3 minutes. Unless you have a really low power microwave this will take way too long and your marshmallows will get very hot and your treats will be very hard.
How to Soften Hard Rice Krispie Treats
If you’re just eating them, you can microwave a treat for 5 to 10 seconds to soften it up a bit before eating.
Otherwise, you can place a few slices of white bread in your container with the treats, seal the lid, and allow the treats to absorb some of the moisture from the bread.
Your treats will never be as gooey as they could have been if you hadn’t overheated your marshmallows, but that sure is better than throwing them away.
Can I use marshmallows that are past their use by date?
Well you can, but the older your marshmallows get, the tougher they’ll get. So we recommend using really fresh, soft marshmallows when preparing your treats.
If you use old marshmallows, chances are your treats will be a little too hard.
My granola treats are sticky, why?
