I’ve been looking around but haven’t found anything. I changed my brakes and rotors yesterday, it was time to do it! In any case, my parking brake no longer holds the car very well.
Is adjusting the cams on the rear brakes the only way to adjust them, or is there another adjustment on the cable somewhere like under the center console?
I didn’t want to adjust the cams in the back because I don’t know if that’s true or if I’m just burning my shoes.

Hi guys, I have a 2008 Scion Tc that I’m having trouble adjusting the parking brake on. We’ve replaced the car so I don’t drive every day anymore and am preparing to sell it to a friend whose child is about to get his driver’s license. I’m generally reluctant to sell a car to a friend because I feel very obligated to make sure the car is in good condition, but I think it would be a great first car so I’ve been working on cleaning it up for her . I recently did a job on the rear brake: pads, rotors and a caliper.
The e-brake on this car is essentially a drum brake in the rear rotors with an adjustment gear/screw accessible through a small hole in the rotor. Instructions I’ve gotten from Youtube and Scion forums seem simple: turn the bolt until you can’t turn the brake rotor anymore, then turn it back 2 clicks. I interpreted “2 clicks” as pressing the gear twice with a screwdriver, since that’s really the only way to turn it through the hole in the rotor.
I was able to set it up fairly easily so that the rear wheels are locked when the lever is engaged and spin freely when the lever is disengaged, which sounds perfect! I did a couple of short test drives right after that and everything seemed great, and then I put the car away for two weeks. I got back to the car with the brake stuck on both rear wheels regardless of lever position making the car undriveable. Loosening wasn’t easy as I couldn’t turn the rotor to line up the hole with the adjustment gear, but the rotors have two threaded holes that I could drive a couple of screws into and pry the rotor off. I hope I didn’t further damage the brake mechanism by doing this, but it went pretty smoothly with this technique.
So last night I went through the process again: Jack up the car, brake lever down, turn the dial until it clicks, turn back a bit until it seems right, test a few pulls on the brake with the rear end in the air, test drive with the car in the neighborhood and parking the car for the night. I decided to drive the car to work today as I thought it should get some movement but this morning the car didn’t move, the e-brake was on again. uhhh!
I plan to play around with it again tonight, probably going a little further wrong on the “undo the screw” step, but does anyone have any advice for me? This can’t really be the crappy guessing game it seems, can it? It seems like such a simple mechanism, but I’m struggling with it.
The car is manual and I am planning to sell it to someone I know so a working parking brake is pretty important. If I still can’t get it myself I’ll end up taking it to the dealer and ask them to inspect and adjust the brake, but I don’t know when I’ll have time for that. My only free time to work on this thing right now is late at night when nothing’s open, so I’d much rather do it myself.
