By giving the actual coffee, you show that you’ve put some effort into it. If you’re just giving a gift card (especially to a generic store or chain) it seems like you didn’t give that person a thought.”

For generations of children, the post office has been the primary gateway to the magic of Santa Claus, quickly sending hundreds of thousands of handwritten holiday wish lists to an imaginative address in the North Pole. Now, fresh from delivering millions of ballots in November’s election, the US Postal Service is turning its attention to another massive undertaking — “Operation Santa.” But those letters to Saint Nick are being digitized and put online so “elves” — anyone hoping to spread Christmas cheer — can accept and fulfill the gift lists.

The Postal Service says children have been sending letters to Santa for 108 years, and agency employees and nonprofit organizations helped compose replies for many of those years. In 2017, the New York Postal Service launched a gift giving campaign to allow volunteers to contribute gifts and brighten Santa’s rounds on Christmas Eve. The online program was expanded to 17 cities in 2019. This year, for the first time, gift givers can send gifts from across the country.

According to a Post spokesperson, most of the letters are from children asking for things like toys, gadgets and books. But many are only looking for the bare essentials: a winter coat, a mattress, school supplies. Parents who are struggling to survive also write often, hoping for help in finding gifts for their children.

The Postal Service redacts all personally identifying information before uploading the letters to Operation Santa’s website, where they can be searched by state beginning Dec. 4. “Elves,” or people interested in adopting a letter, can then register online with the postal service to send gifts.

Last year more than 11,000 packages were sent in reply to letters sent to Santa Claus.

“Letters to Santa are typically letters in a bottle,” said filmmaker Dana Nachman, whose documentary “Dear Santa” about the letters premiered Dec. 4, according to Messages. Sometimes they are sad and show poverty in America. But they’re all written so seriously and genuinely that I can’t think of any other opportunity to get into people’s minds in such an authentic way, and they have the emotional breadth of really nothing else I can think of. Using the correct mailing address, including a zip code, is the most important way to ensure a letter reaches Santa, the agency said, since Santa has many names — Kriss Kringle, Father Christmas, Santa Nick and more.

“Letters written to 123 Elf Road will be processed like any other canceled first class mail,” said Postal Service spokeswoman Kimberly Frum. “The address is an official, physical address for Santa’s Workshop and all letters are delivered to this location. You could try entering it into a GPS. Sometimes it shows up, sometimes it doesn’t. But then again, the magic of the season is unpredictable.”

1) Explain the rules
