Do you think you’ve become obsessed with your dating profile pictures and finally managed to get them just right? Sorry, but you better think again.

The dating app Hinge has trawled through thousands of its users’ photos and figured out what gets those likes and what gets ignored. The results are quite surprising. Hinge’s profile requires you to add six photos, and people can like them and start conversations based on them individually. This way they can really tell what kind of photos get the most positive reactions.

To get to the bottom of the effect, they tagged thousands of randomly selected photos with 35 different labels (for example: hair up vs. down). The basic takeaway is that you should choose photos that bring out the real you. As Olivia Abramowitz, VP of Marketing at Hinge, told us in an interview, “Your photos should show you in your natural state, doing something you love.”

How can this be implemented in practice? Well, for one thing, you should skip sunglasses and Snapchat filters — or really anything that obscures your face or eyes. Also, Abramowitz said a shocking number of images showed other people who could easily be mistaken for a significant other, and that was a big turn off. So skip the photo of you with your brother no matter how great you look.

Interestingly, posing on the beach also made a photo a lot less likeable — sand shots of women were 47 percent less likely to receive a like, compared to 80 percent of men. Abramowitz thinks this may be related to the fact that Hinge’s audience is less focused on dating and more focused on finding serious relationships. Maybe they just didn’t respond as well to these more revealing photos because they felt less comfortable starting a conversation based on them.

Conversely, it was very appealing to use a photo of you doing a sporting activity. Women were 166 percent more likely to like sports photos; for men it was 45 percent. While it’s possible that many people are interested in finding someone active, Abramowitz suggests these photos work particularly well because they provide people with a natural conversation starter. “Hey, I like tennis too” obviously works much better than a simple “Hey”.

One thing this data makes very clear is that our intuition about what should work kinda sucks. For example, snapshots got 15 percent more likes. But amazingly, 80 percent of the photos people use are staged. Similarly, black and white photos received 106 percent more likes, but only 3 percent of all photos were black and white. Maybe it’s time to reconsider some of our strategies!

Even selfies were taboo. Normal selfies were liked 40 percent less. Bathroom selfies were 90 percent less popular. whop whop (But seriously, never use a bathroom selfie.) Abramowitz suggests that selfies can look too staged or give the impression that you’re trying too hard.

And now for the nitty-gritty details, women were 76 percent more likely to get a like if they smiled in a way that showed their teeth. Facing away from the camera (which increased likes by 74 percent) and standing alone (which increased likes by 69 percent) were also great helpers. And oddly enough, you also wore your hair up, which increased your chances of a like by 27 percent.

For men it was almost exactly the opposite. Looking straight ahead was key, increasing the likelihood that you’ll be liked by a whopping 102 percent. Smiling to avoid showing your teeth was preferred, increasing your chances by 43 percent. But like women, photos of you standing alone performed 11 percent better.

Of course, this is all based on Hinge’s user base – so it’s entirely possible that a bikini shot might work much better in another app. But the general insight here is good. As Abramowitz put it, “The best photo of you isn’t always the best photo to use.” You’re not necessarily looking for the most flattering photo ever taken of you. You look for those who say something about you, even if not every hair on your head is in exactly the right place.

So focus on finding the photos that make you look like you’re doing the things you really love to do. Give them something to talk to you about, and eventually the right people should find their way to you.

Yes, Hinge is a dating app that you can use if you don’t have Facebook. There are two ways to create a Hinge account – through Facebook or through your mobile phone number.

However, remember that these are two separate login methods. If you create an account by doing both, you won’t be able to merge them later.

If you create an account using your mobile number for authentication, you still have the option to import information from Facebook. You can then disconnect Facebook from your Hinge profile.

And if you create your account with Facebook but want to disconnect from this social platform, it’s easy.

Most dating apps customize users and then let them initiate their chat. However, when Bumble launched, it broke new ground by letting women make the first move. Today, Hinge is introducing his own take on how conversations should be handled on dating apps with a new feature called Your Turn. The idea behind “Your Turn” is that users – regardless of gender – can decide who makes the first move and then users are reminded when it is their turn to respond.

In early testing, the company claims the feature helped reduce ghosting behavior on its service by 25 percent.

Hinge CEO Justin McLeod explains that the idea behind “Your Turn” first surfaced in focus groups, where users told the company that they hadn’t always cut off their conversations on purpose. Sometimes they just lost track of the people in their inbox, or 23 percent of the time they were just “busy and forgot.”

The Hinge team then developed a feature that would better flag conversations you hadn’t replied to yet. This resulted in “Your Turn”.

After the first match, where “Your turn” helps get the conversation going, the feature reminds users when it’s their “turn” to respond to the conversation while the chat continues.

This fixes one of the biggest problems with dating apps — conversations can often start off well, but then fizzle out and die down. “Your Turn” is a little nudge someone wants to hear back.

However, when the conversation isn’t going well, Hinge users can now hide the match so they can focus on the conversation where things are going better — that is, where there’s more back-and-forth happening. This helps clean up the inbox without actually having to mismatch users — something people sometimes aren’t willing to do because… well, you know… just in case.

The end result of Your Turn is two-fold – it reduces inbox clutter and makes it clear whose turn it is to chat next.

It’s also worth noting that Your Turn doesn’t make the decision about who should start the conversation based on users’ gender.

“[Hinge users said] they’re fed up with the rules, the games, and being forced to do things they don’t want to do — on both sides,” says McLeod. “It gives you the same benefit of clarity about who should start the conversation without forcing a set of rules on you just based on your gender.”

Hinge says it hosted the function in London and Washington, D.C. last week. tested it with tens of thousands of users and found it reduced the number of matches that didn’t lead to a conversation by 25 percent.

Of course, with just under a quarter of people saying they ghost conversations because they’ve been busy or forgot, that means there’s a larger majority who’ve done the same for other reasons — they might have started making themselves dating someone, they weren’t interested…or maybe you’re just being a little rude.

However, there is no real solution to this larger problem. It’s just a part of the dating app culture these days, and one that can evoke negative feelings about the process in general.

But McLeod says other changes soon to be made to Hinge’s algorithms could help on that front.

“We look for things like that in the algorithm,” he says when asked how apps should deal with people who regularly “ghost” their matches.

“We’re going to be rolling out some pretty significant algorithm changes early in the new year,” notes McLeod. He says the new algorithm will pay more attention to users’ chat behavior, taking into account things like whether the person is just passing but not chatting, or if they’re ghosting.

Hinge doesn’t disclose the number of users, but says it’s now growing 15 percent month-on-month, with the majority of downloads coming from word of mouth. Most of its users also have college degrees, with 90 percent of the user base being between the ages of 23 and 36. The user base has doubled in the last 6 months and is now setting up 100,000 appointments per month (based on phone numbers being exchanged.)

The company was known for experimenting with new ideas in the past. It launched an app for friends who enjoy playing matchmakers and tested a personal assistant service. One of its features — how users comment on individual pieces of content, like text posts and photos — seems to have inspired Tinder’s test of a newsfeed that lets you respond to pots of new photos or other articles.
