The top grain can be confusing as it implies the top layer of the skin. But that is precisely not the case. Instead, it starts out as full-grain leather, except that the outermost layer is removed by grinding or buffing. This process eliminates many of the imperfections. Then an embossing process artificially recreates the appearance of a full-grain leather product. This mainly restores the attractiveness of full-grain leather.

However, because top grain leather loses all of the dense fiber characteristics associated with a full grain leather, it loses much of the supple quality. It is also thinner and therefore more flexible. However, because buffing changes the grain and texture of the leather, the natural durability remains. Therefore, any full-grain leather that has been removed or altered by grinding or polishing is automatically referred to as corrected grain.

One of the key differences is that some corrected grain leathers retain most of their full grain after processing. That’s because the areas with unsightly scars and blemishes have been buffed away. But even full-grain leather that has been sanded and polished in places is still considered a corrected grain.

Why do automakers make different types of leather so confusing?

Although nappa leather is typically full-grain, some automakers may advertise a corrected grain as nappa leather. That’s why it’s best to get your hands on the leather to tell the difference. Genuine nappa leather and corrected grain have noticeable differences in softness and texture.

So if you’re looking for a genuine Nappa leather vehicle, trust your fingertips and ask questions. In the long run you will thank yourself as there are many differences in the way genuine full grain nappa leather and corrected grain wear and are cared for over time e.g. B. with a leather care product.

Full-grain leather is very breathable, absorbs less moisture and dries quickly despite prolonged exposure to moisture. In addition, full-grain leather tends to lighten and flatten with age, causing it to develop a desirable patina that some feel has been worn correctly and looks more attractive.

In contrast, top-grain leather receives a topcoat that makes it less breathable than full-grain leather. Because of this, genuine Nappa leather is typically only found in luxury vehicles or the high-end versions of mainstream cars. But it’s not the only high quality leather used in automobiles.

Semi-aniline leather and vegetable tanned leather are types of leather that you are more likely to encounter on Audi, BMW and Lexus. This type of leather is usually unembossed and has a smooth, flat grain. Vegetable tanned leather is attractive because of its organic tanning process, which preserves more of the hide’s original properties.

These leathers all start out as the best hides on the market. The resulting product usually ends up in very high end luxury vehicles. Rolls-Royce used this process on the upholstery of the Phantom luxury sedan in 2017.

While other premium materials such as wool blends or faux leather are beginning to replace real leather in Mini and Volvo vehicles, some consumers still associate leather car seat upholstery with the high-end model of the line. And for these people nothing else will do.

The leather buying guide: What kind of leather do I need?

Types of Leather Grains

#2: Top grain

The top grain refers to the outer layer of skin that is separate from the other layers or the split skins. Because the top grain is not strong or dense enough to form a finished product on its own, its surface is sanded, an artificial grain texture is pressed into the skin, and the surface is pigmented or stained.

Top grain leather is used to make suede and nubuck leather. It is generally softer and more flexible than full-grain leather, but will stretch permanently over time.

#3: Corrected grain

Corrected grain leather is made from the top layer of the hide. As with top grain leather, the corrected grain is sanded to remove imperfections on its surface and then embossed with an artificial grain texture. This added finish reduces the leather’s inherent breathability and richly patterned texture and color.

#4: Split

Split leather is made from the fibrous part of the hide that remains after the top part of the rawhide has been severed. Split leather, like top grain and corrected leather, can be sanded and embossed and while less expensive it is not considered durable enough for upholstery.

So which kind is the best?

Of the real leathers, full-grain leather is by far the best in terms of quality. Unlike the other grains, full grain has not been separated from the top grain or split layers and is therefore the strongest and most reliable type of leather. At the same time, whole grain is also free from heavy finish applications, making it more breathable. Leather’s breathability allows it to maintain the correct pH balance as temperatures change, adapting to your body temperature.

Full-grain leather is not only the most durable and resilient leather, but also the most luxurious. When the natural texture and rich depth of color of a leather hide are respected, no two products are the same. In addition, full-grain leather has a higher yield per hide and produces the lowest amount of waste of any animal-derived leather. What is faux leather?

Faux leather is one of several terms for faux or faux leather. These names are often used to describe specific end uses of synthetic leather products such as synthetic leather (sofa, chair and headboard upholstery), synthetic leather (car upholstery, clothing) and koskin (consumer goods). There are three main types of synthetic leather constructions: polyurethane (“PU”), polyvinyl chloride (PVC – “vinyl”) and silicone.

Vinyl synthetic leather has been manufactured in the United States since the 1940’s, initially for products such as shoes, automotive interiors, and upholstery. In the late 1950’s, DuPont and other chemical companies began developing polyurethane products. Silicone upholstery fabrics are relatively new, having been introduced in 2010.

Silicone, polyurethane, and vinyl synthetic leathers are used to make clothing, upholstery, and product covers, but each is better than others for specific applications. PU fabric is softer, more flexible and more breathable, so it is more commonly used in the manufacture of high-wear products such as clothing and upholstery (surfaces that come in direct contact with the skin). Vinyl isn’t as breathable as PU, but this is often ideal for products that need to shed moisture, like book covers or electronic device cases. Silicone is suitable for almost every application because it has the advantages of both PU and vinyl.

Vinyl upholstery is made from two separate synthetic materials. The fibers of the upholstery are made of strong polyester fibers. The fibers are then coated with vinyl, which is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and plasticizers (phthalic acid). This vinyl is fused onto the surface of the fibers, sealing them and forming a virtually waterproof surface that is still flexible and strong.

Vinyl upholstery is easy to clean and maintain. This makes it ideal for situations where cleanliness is a top priority, such as B. in hospitals and restaurants. Even vinyl does not require any special care or conditioning. However, vinyl can become uncomfortably hot if left in the sun. Padding in polyurethane

PU is made by coating a base fabric, such as cotton, polyester, or shredded leather, with a flexible polymer and then treating it to look more like animal skin. Polyurethane upholstery is the most realistic imitation of real leather in terms of feel, surface feel and overall appearance. When stitched, gathered or tufted, it actually “breaks” or creases like real leather. Because no plasticizers are used in PU upholstery, there will be no cracks or delaminations, and they will remain soft and supple as long as they remain on the furniture. They are also easier to decorate designs on. Polyurethane is considered to be more environmentally friendly than vinyl because it does not produce dioxins. PU resins consist of a softer polymer and therefore do not require any additional plasticizers. Polyurethane costs less than real leather but is more expensive to manufacture than vinyl. Silicone is the latest innovation in coated fabrics. Silicone is an organic polymer, unlike PU and PVC which are inorganic polymers. Simply put, organic polymers use cleaner building blocks, such as carbon, at the molecular level. The production process is environmentally friendly. Silicone is manufactured using a one-station molding process that uses far less energy than a traditional coated fabric manufacturing process. The process uses no solvents and very little water. Faux leather offers a number of advantages over real leather. These include the following:

Economical – Faux leather is usually much cheaper than real leather.
