The earliest whiskey was pretty invigorating stuff, distilled almost exclusively by monks. It was never allowed to mature and was usually very raw, as befitted a beverage considered primarily medicinal, used to treat anything from smallpox to paralysis.
Then came Henry VIII, who dissolved the monasteries and expelled the monks, and whiskey production found its way into the cottages and homesteads of ordinary Scots.
