Types of jacket cuts – Classic, Slim and Extra Slim

Classic is a “drop 6” fit and a roomier, boxier cut. This has more room around the midsection and is great for men with larger midsections.

Slim is a drop 8 sizing and has a good standard slim fit. This is recommended for well-trained men who want a slim fit around the waist. For reference, our ready-to-wear (stock) Hudson jackets are cut to exactly the same size as the equivalent MTO Slim Fit.

Extra Slim has a drop 10 fit and is extremely slim. “Drop” refers to the decrease in girth from the chest to the waist. Drop 10 means the waist is 10 inches smaller than the chest of the jacket overall. This is recommended for muscular men with larger chests/shoulders and particularly slim waists who want a very tailored fit.

Note: Although some interpret Extra Slim Fit as a size that is ideal for people with a very slim build, this is not correct. A slim and extra slim fit jacket of the same size (e.g. 40, see below) will have the same chest, shoulder and sleeve measurements. The main difference is a larger drop (taper) from chest width to midsection width on our Extra Slim Fit models.

Jacket and sleeve length – regular, short and long sizes

Tailored jackets can be ordered in short, long and regular sizes to accommodate men of all sizes.

Long jackets are 1 3/16″ longer in sleeve length and body length than regular jackets, while short jackets are 1 3/16″ shorter in sleeve length and body length than regular jackets.

Here’s a simple guide to help you decide whether you should go in a short, regular, or tall size based on your height:

– If you are under 5’9″, choose a short jacket size

– If you are over 6’2″, choose a long jacket size

Buying a piece of clothing that doesn’t fit is very frustrating, a huge waste of time and money and bad for the environment.

The parka is a winter wardrobe staple that has been making the rounds for nearly 70 years. It’s comfy and cozy, comes in a range of styles and colors, and always looks cool (oh, the irony). Despite its roots in a number of subcultures – most notably the British mod and Brit pop scene – the parka’s history began in the fashion hall of fame when the US military adopted the style of the sealskin parka-wearing Inuit people around to protect themselves from freezing arctic conditions.

Since then, the sage-green army parka with a fur-lined hood has become the ubiquitous style. It’s popular for its simple practicality and warmth, and while you don’t need a Paul Weller haircut to pull it off, we encourage you to find just the right fit.

Fit

A parka should be fairly loose fitting and have a basic shape that falls from the shoulders into an A-line cut.

“Since the point of a parka is to take on military style, it’s not enough to go too narrow or fitted,” says stylist Luke McDonald. “It’s a full, traditional winter style that’s forgiving on most body types and lets the shoulders fall more loosely than more structured styles without losing its shape.”

Your parka should have enough volume to fit over your bulky winter layers without feeling bulky.

A parka should fall long and can often adopt the fishtail hem developed during the Korean War.

“Going short with style takes away from the purpose of wearing a parka. This longer length makes it a versatile choice that goes with almost any winter attire,” says Luke.

If you want to add a bit of personality to your office outfit, a parka will always be longer than your suit jacket, making it an easy overcoat option for the depths of winter. But it’s best for casual attire, and on a freezing morning it feels like stepping outside wrapped in a big, cozy blanket. So you can basically pretend you never got out of bed.

“While the super oversized military-style parka can look cool, if you’re not trying to align with 1960s mod cosplay, a minimal and simple version is easier to pull off. As a rule of thumb, don’t overdo the detail,” says Luke.

A simple hood is enough to follow traditional style if you don’t want fur trim or lining, and a zip fly instead of toggles will fit your modern winter wardrobe just as well.
