Hydraulic bucket leaks down pretty…

I’m trying to understand what you’re saying. So far I’ve put a ball valve in the lines that go to the rod ends of both bucket cylinders. Rod ends are attached to bottom and bucket. If I close one or both ball valves, the bucket stays overnight. If I open BOTH valves, the bucket quickly starts to fall. Do you think there can still be an internal leak in the cylinders? That’s what I thought at first, then I thought I had ruled that possibility out, and now I’m unsure. I have an infrared gun like the one you describe. How can this help me with the diagnosis? I won’t have much to do with it tonight anyway.

Kanman said: The boom itself will only leak down a few inches overnight, but the spoon itself needs constant adjustment. When you say coil, is that the same as control valve? Sorry, I’m brand new to owning a skid steer loader and am learning as fast as I can. If this is the same I’m hoping there is a reman kit I can do myself as a reman unit from my dealer seems to cost $1300…! Oops lol!! Click to expand…

Yes, spool is an old timer term for control valve. I have been told that there is no rebuild for a leaking control valve as the only thing that will prevent leakage in the hydraulic circuit is the metal-to-metal tolerance between the spool and the valve body. You can also try putting new seals on the bucket cylinder pistons to rule that out. If bucket cylinders have leaking piston seals but the control valve isn’t leaking, I would expect a bare mounting plate to sag a little and stop as a vacuum develops on the extended side of the bucket cylinder circuit. Since the arm cylinders will retract if they sag from leaking seals, they will hydrolock themselves and not actually sag much unless the control valve is leaking.
