If you don’t have Sky broadband, you don’t have a Sky Q Hub. The default installation option is to connect the main Sky box to your existing 2.4GHz network for internet access. Additional Sky Q Mini boxes connect to your 2.4GHz network and also to a hidden 5GHz mesh network.

1. Connect your main box to your network

Your Sky Q main box should be connected to the internet via your 2.4GHz network. To check if this is the case, go to Settings, Network, Setup and check the Status box. If you see your home network name, your Sky Q box is set up correctly. If not, click Reset and then select Confirm. Select the non-Sky broadband option, select your network from the list, and then use the on-screen keyboard to enter your network’s password. Allow your box to connect to the network.

2. Sky Q Booster

If you have a Sky internet connection, you also have a Sky Q Hub. To ensure everything works, you cannot split the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks on the hub, and all your devices must be connected via WPS to build the wireless mesh network correctly. Here’s what you need to do.

1. Combine the networks on the hub

Both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks must have the same name. If you changed the network names, you must reverse that decision. Sign in to your hub’s home screen and go to WiFi settings. Click between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz tabs, make sure your 5GHz network has the same name as the 2.4GHz network, then save your settings.

2. Set up your main box

You need to properly connect your Sky Q main box to your hub. To make sure you’re connected, go to Settings, Network, Setup and select Reset and then Confirm. If you don’t have Sky broadband, your Sky Q Mini boxes won’t use the 2.4GHz band for the WiFi hotspots and should rarely use that connection. If you’re connecting your main Sky Q-Box via Ethernet, the 2.4GHz channel won’t be used, so there’s no point disabling it. The only reason to disable 2.4GHz network here is to make sure your 5GHz network is working. If you lose the picture, the 5GHz network is down and you should reset everything. You may need another Sky Q Booster, so you should contact Sky Support directly if your issue isn’t resolved.

They have sky broadband

If you have Sky broadband, your Sky Q Mini boxes act as Wi-Fi hotspots. This is mostly a good thing, but some people have had issues with devices pinging between the Mini’s WiFi and your router’s WiFi, which can cause some devices to have connectivity issues. If you don’t have Sky broadband, this feature has a second benefit: it means all your Sky Q devices are only connected via the 5GHz mesh network, eliminating your 2.4GHz and 5GHz -Main networks are shared only with other devices.

I’ll show you how to set up ethernet on the main box, but I won’t go into how to make your entire system ethernet-based: this is a special setup when there is a massive problem with wireless working properly and only should performed by a Sky technician.

1. Connect your main box

Pull out the tab on the Sky Q box and connect an Ethernet cable to it. Then insert the other end of the cable into your router (Sky Q Hub or other). Go to “Settings”, “Setup”, “Network”, “Advanced settings” and select the option “Connect to your router using a wired connection”. If you have a Sky Q Hub, you’ll be asked if you want to use your box as a Wi-Fi hotspot. We recommend selecting Yes unless you have a really good reason not to. If you don’t have a Sky Q Hub, your box will lose its wireless connection.

2. Reconnect all boosters

The maximum Ultra HD quality cannot be set

Sky Q supports Ultra HD with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 (2160p) with a color depth of 10-bit. If you’ve selected your settings but the Sky Q box can only enable 8-bit colour, then there is a problem somewhere between your box and your TV. If you’ve connected your Sky Q box directly to your TV, check that your TV supports 10-bit colour; if not, that’s your problem.

If you’re running your Sky Q box through an AV receiver or soundbar, you may not have the correct setting on your receiver and may need to edit the HDMI port settings per the manufacturer’s instructions.
