As you can see the 1 inch slate offers the most benefits including less vibration and table movement and durability. However, installing a table with 1-inch slate in three pieces is more expensive due to the need for expert leveling techniques and seam filling. It’s not a do-it-yourself job.

For this reason, many people choose a 3/4 inch board that comes in one piece. Despite the awkwardness of handling a large piece of slate, the table is easier for someone without expertise to install and align. How to determine whether a pool table is made of 1-piece slate or 3-piece slate

In the United States, 3-piece slate billiard tables are the most common. There are some older tables with 1 piece slate tops and they are mostly from brands like Empire or California Billiards.

To determine if your pool table has a 1-piece or a 3-piece slate, first stand in front of the center pocket of your pool table.

Swipe your finger to the left of the middle pocket and center it between the two diamonds/marks.

Look under your table in the area you pointed to. If you see a gap or a seam then it is a 3 piece slate pool table.

If your pool table has no obvious gaps or seams in the specified area, it is likely a one-piece slate pool table.

Typical one-piece slate billiard tables have wood paneling and legs similar to the table pictured above.

I have a slate fireplace surround that makes my living room feel really warm and earthy even when the fire isn’t lit.

Slate is a popular material in home construction, used not only for fireplace surrounds but also for flooring, countertops and backsplashes, not to mention outdoor walkways and walls.

It is popular for its natural beauty and longevity. But it only stays beautiful if it is properly cared for. I grew up with a brick hearth and really had no prior experience with slate so I had to do some research on how to clean slate in my home. Here’s what I learned…

Regular cleaning

First, be sure to sweep, dust, or dry wipe the surface to remove loose dirt. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in a few cups of warm water. Use a soft cloth (or mop) dipped in the soapy solution to rub away dirt and grime. Dry with a towel and allow the surface to air dry completely overnight.

Occasional deep cleaning

Follow the steps above for regular cleaning, but once the surface is dry apply a light coat of teak oil to the slate using a soft cloth. Teak oil is inexpensive and available at most major hardware stores. Shale oil also works, but it’s much more expensive and harder to find.

stain removal

Mix equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and spray onto all stains. Leave it on for five or 10 minutes, then scrub with a soft scouring pad (not steel wool) or a soft-bristled brush. (Be careful if you have a slate floor with colored grout as this bleach solution could damage the color of those grouts.)

For tougher stains, mix peroxide and baking soda into a bubbly paste. After the bubbles are gone, apply the paste to the stain and let it sit. Then wipe the slate clean with a damp, warm cloth.

It’s best to clean your slate with water and a mild detergent at least every two or three months, even if it doesn’t appear dirty, to prevent dirt build-up and stains. And since slate is porous (very prone to absorbing moisture and stains), it’s recommended that you seal it with a stone and tile sealer, a product available at major hardware or tile stores.
