Other retailers we called, including a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer and a Lexus dealer, said they don’t mind programming aftermarket fobs if the customer requests it, as long as the customer can afford the risks involved understands.

“We’re reluctant to work with aftermarket keyfobs,” a service advisor at a Lexus dealership told us. “We can’t guarantee parts or labor, and if we try to program it and it doesn’t work, we still have to charge them for our labor.”

Luckily, even if you have to go to a retailer, it’s not a lengthy process. Most dealers we contacted said that it typically takes only 15 to 30 minutes to program the key fob, and the entire process, including cutting the replacement mechanical key, rarely takes more than an hour.

Going to the dealer doesn’t have to break the bank either, even if they do everything for you. This was also true for European brands. A local Volkswagen dealership we spoke to told us that a new fob with a laser-cut key and programming for CR’s 2015 VW Jetta would cost around $225.

Some brands, such as Chevrolet, allow customers to save money on programming. For example, General Motors key fobs are not only on the cheaper side (we were quoted $147.98 for a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu with keyless entry, push-button start, and remote start), but a Chevrolet spokesman told us that the key fob doesn’t need programming done at the dealer.

“The programming procedure is described in the vehicle’s owner’s manual, but the vehicle must be present,” he said.

Note that most customer-programmable key fobs, regardless of brand, require two current, working keys to program a third new key without having to go to the dealer, Yu says.
