If you approach follow-up with the right mindset—that you’re adding value instead of “bugging”⁠—you can write much more effective follow-up emails.

For example, “busy” has become a common response to “how are you?” (“I’m fine! Just busy studying for my exams”). In fact, research has found that it’s common in Christmas greeting cards to tell people about what’s on your mind.

But when you use that word to tell a colleague why you can’t take his call, or your boss why you can’t attend a meeting, you’re actually saying, according to the BBC, “I’m not very good at it, my Time to prioritize and right now you are not a priority at all.”
