Teen dating app Hoop climbed to #2 on the App Store chart this month. Here’s what parents need to know.

If your kid has Snapchat, it’s easy for them to get the dating app Hoop — because it piggybacks on Snapchat the way Tinder piggybacks on Facebook. This is how it works:

Users create an account with photos, a chosen age and some bio information. This allows them to swipe through profiles. To start chatting, a user simply taps a Snapchat button to request a stranger’s Snap username. The chat itself then takes place in Snapchat.

In-App Currency

Unlike Tinder, where users can “swipe right” an unlimited number of times, Hoop uses a devilishly clever in-app currency strategy that drives engagement in a dozen shady directions at once.

Hoop makes it easy for strangers to access your child’s personal information through their Snapchat account. In addition, the app rewards them for doing so.

Connection requests on Hoop must be paid in “Diamonds” which must be earned after your first 10 requests. As? By sharing and inviting friends to add the app, by adding people on Snapchat that you meet on Hoop, by logging in every day, taking polls, watching video ads, and/or signing up for streaming services or insurance providers.

What could go wrong?

So what are the dangers here? For one, Hoop makes it easy for strangers to access your child’s personal information through their Snapchat account.

In addition, the app rewards them for doing so. Kids will be asked to “choose an age” for their Hoop profile – which may or may not be the same as their Snapchat account.

Finally, Hoop encourages kids to take surveys. And that means data collection — and your child’s personal information is sold to the highest bidder.

(Pocket-lint) – Nine months after Snapchat revamped its chat experience, it has introduced a new chat feature: groups.

Groups are basically a way for you to chat in groups. Snapchat said it announced the feature just in time for the holidays because it’s a “great time to hang out with friends and spend time with family.” Groups allow you to communicate with up to 16 friends at once in Snapchat.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new feature.

Snapchat is a photo and video messaging app. It’s unique in that all photos and videos only last a short time before disappearing forever, making the app inherently ephemeral, although you can take a screenshot of any snaps you receive to save them in image form . Groups are similar to one-on-one chats, but can include up to 16 group members. Also, chats sent to a group are deleted after 24 hours by default. Snaps sent to a group can only be opened and played once by each recipient, but are then also deleted after 24 hours.

Start a group chat

Groups can be created while sending a snap or when creating a new chat.

Just open the chat screen and tap the New Chat icon. Then select some friends and tap Chat. You can only add people to a group if you are both friends on Snapchat. To send Snaps directly to a group after taking them, tap the Send button and select a group from the Send To screen. Everyone in the group can see that you sent the snap and who read it.

Determine if you are in a group chat

To determine if a chat is actually a group chat, look for the glitter/friend emoji next to the group name on your chat screen.

Adjust group chat settings

To access the group chat settings, tap the menu icon in the top left corner.

From there you can see who’s in the group, rename the group, mute notifications, add someone or even leave the group. If you decide to leave, the snaps and chats you sent will be deleted even if someone saved them in the chat.

See who is in your group chat

When group members open the group chat, their name will flash in a speech bubble above your keyboard to let you know they’re there. You can tap a friend’s name bubble to start a quick chat, or even add them if you haven’t already.

See who’s read a chat or snap

Tap or hold any chat to see who’s read, saved, etc. When someone opens a Snap, their name will appear below it in chat. Chats and snaps are deleted after 24 hours unless saved. Also, Snaps sent to a group can be opened and played once by each recipient.

Chat with a friend quickly

Tap any name at the bottom of a group chat to start a one-on-one chat with that person. You can always swipe back to the group.

Snapchat’s developer platform is exploding as a gateway to teenage social app users. Hitting #2 on the overall App Store chart this month, Hoop is Snap Kit’s latest blockbuster, with its Tinder-like interface for swiping to discover people and request messages with them on Snapchat. Within a week of going viral, unfunded French startup Dazz Hoop racked up 2.5 million downloads.

The fact that a stunningly simple and already ubiquitous app style was able to climb the charts so quickly shows Snap Kit’s potential to increase user engagement with Snapchat. As the developer platform allows other apps to port their login system and Bitmoji avatars, it creates new reasons for users to set up a Snapchat account and keep using it. It’s the same strategy that made Facebook a staple of the web, but this time it’s for a younger audience.

In the first-ever interview about Hoop, 26-year-old Dazz co-founders Lucas Gervais and Alexi Pourret reveal that the idea was based on observing user patterns in their previous experiment on the Snap-Kit platform. They created an app called Dazz in 2018 that allowed users to create polls and get anonymous responses from friends, but they noted that their 250,000 users “always ended up adding to each other on Snap.” So we decided to create Hoop, the app to make new Snap friends,” Gervais tells me.

Gervais and Pourret have been friends since they were two and grew up in a small town in France. They met their two developers in high school and are now marketing students at university. With Hoop, they say, the goal was “to meet everyone’s needs, from connecting people from different cultures, to helping lonely people feel better, to simply growing your Snapchat community.”

At first glance, Hoop for iOS or Android looks just like Tinder. You create an account with some photos and bio information and start swiping through profiles. If you like someone, tap a Snapchat button to request their Snap username so you can message them.

But then Hoop reveals his sophisticated virality and monetization strategy. Instead of being able to endlessly swipe right and walk up to people, Hoop limits your requests by making you spend its in-app currency “diamonds” to reach them. After about 10 chat requests, you need to earn more diamonds. You do this by sharing your invite link and getting friends to open it to the app, adding people on Snapchat you meet on Hoop, logging in each day, taking a poll, watching a video ad, and completing deals by sign up for streaming services or car insurance providers. It also trades diamonds for Hoop’s rating on the App Store, although that might be against Apple’s rules.

These tactics helped Hoop climb to #2 on the overall iOS chart and #1 on the social apps chart on January 24th. It’s now 83rd overall and 7th on social media, beating apps like Discord, LinkedIn, Skype and new Vine successor Byte. Hoop had more than 3 million installs as of a week ago.

However, there are certainly some concerns. Gervais claims, “We’re not a meeting or dating app. We’re just providing an easy way to make new Snap friends.” However, since Tinder isn’t available to people under 18, they might be looking for Hoop instead. Luckily, adults can’t see profiles of users under the age of 18 and vice versa, and users only see potential matches in their age group. However, users can edit their age at any time.

Snap Kit keeps startups lean

Three years ago, I wrote that Snapchat’s anti-developer stance was a liability. It had to become a platform with a cadre of allies that could strengthen its role as an identity platform for teenagers and isolate them from imitators like Facebook. It did just that. By launching other apps from their accounts, stories, and Bitmoji, they wouldn’t have to copy their social charts, sharing format, or avatars, instead drawing attention to the originals.

If Snap can continue to develop useful developer tools, perhaps adding real-world object scanning, augmented reality filters, and video calling to its platform, a Snapchat account could become a must-have for anyone looking to take advantage of the next generation of apps.
