So, Do You Want To Go Out, Or? ⋆ Lily Manga
Miwa has been into women for as long as she’s known – and now that she’s at university, it might finally be time for her to step out of her straight shell. That takes a lot of confidence, of course, and coming out is never easy – but could Saeko, her trashy, popular weirdo of a friend, give her the help she needs – or could the two be more alike than Miwa? notices…?!
This series is a re-release of tmfly’s earlier work of the same name.

Tsukiatte Agetemo Ii kana
(Mild spoilers for the pilot chapter this manga is based on)
Maybe I’m a little biased, but I absolutely love this manga. It feels criminally underrated. Since finding it, it has quickly become my gold standard for lesbian/yuri love stories as nothing I have seen from Japan before or since came as close to depicting actual lesbian love affairs.
I’m going to give you a list of how this manga ignores the usual yuri clichés in favor of mature storytelling. If, like me, you’re sick of reading about the same couple of poorly written lesbians, you should read this:
-The characters are in college and… about the same age. They are not high school students, middle school students, teachers or office ladies.
-While self-doubt is an element of characterization that both leads grapple with on several occasions, there isn’t a terrifying twenty-chapter “will they or won’t they” segment. (slight spoiler: Miwa and Saeko get together at the end of the first chapter)
– As a corollary of the above, the main elements of the story come from the relationship, not from the initial meeting.
-Whoever translated this did an amazing job getting everyone to speak like real people speaking in English. On the writing side, there are no crazy moments of forced “comedy” or bizarre things that would only happen in anime, just believable people who are nonetheless genuinely funny at times.
-Misunderstandings do happen, but they’re not forced because of the constant melodrama, they’re just a natural case of the characters’ personality traits being misaligned. They are handled maturely, or in some cases characters develop through conflict to become mature enough to handle it, which makes the drama feel grounded rather than melodramatic.
-Gay people are allowed to call themselves gay. LGBT elements and issues are discussed openly when the time is right, without euphemisms or “it’s okay if you are”. How Japanese culture interacts with LGBT people is a major theme in the story.
-Conflict happened. It’s not a complete fluff fest, although it’s sweet as sin at times. Characters have real emotional baggage to work through and actually develop through interacting with each other rather than staying stagnant. There is no generic “bad girl” trying to blackmail them and keep breaking them up.
If you’re at all familiar with what Japan usually calls “GL” and are desperate like me, then the above will (hopefully) get your heart pumping. We made it. It’s not much, but it’s a manga that doesn’t take the same tired path as things like Sakura Trick or Citrus. It doesn’t just hang around looking at its own navel like Bloom Into You. It’s not a fluffy heap of nothing sprinkled with Japanese “crazy humor” like… pretty much anything labeled as yuri and 4-koma (Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san, Bright and Cheery Amnesia, etc.).
I never realized how much the single target sexuality thing in the Japanese media bothered me. How gay guys in BL constantly talk their feelings away with “it’s okay if it’s you bro” feels subtly toxic to the idea of a gay community. It’s okay, you’re not gay or lesbian and therefore part of a community of people like you, you just think your best friend shines like the morning sun. Head down. Don’t be ‘too gay’, after all it’s just yaoi/yuri, nothing serious. This is why I think Miwa and Saeko’s relationship and their associated insecurities of being in a gay relationship are so important here. It’s risky for them, not because there’s some generic bad girl trying to break them up, but because a lot of people in Japan really wouldn’t accept their relationship.
Oh, and there are bi people in this manga, yay. I feel represented. All in all, between the excellent characterization, lack of toxic tropes, and exploration of mature themes, this is one of the few times I can say that a yuri manga felt like it was written by someone who is older than 25 years. If so If I doubt it all I can say is that the pilot manga which was a single chapter this differs greatly from cheats on Saeko and breaks Miwa’s heart. If that happens later in this one and it gets tragic, I’ll probably want to die, tbh.
So please if you want gay stuff read this manga. If you are looking for “hot lesbian xxx” you might be disappointed but I heard that a small site that starts with P and ends with Hub might have an opening for you there. If you’re here, read it anyway because this is as close to the real deal when it comes to relationships as I’ve found.
They’re messy and heartfelt and often hard work even at the best of times, but they’re also worth every moment.
