Do pen pals exist anymore?
The days of mingling and making friends aren’t over, though. All you need is a new pen pal. It may be a blast from school days past, but the pen pal world is still around. And now, these pen pal-matching platforms are more relevant than ever.
9 Penpal Websites for Starting Foreign Language Exchanges Online and via Snail Mail
But what about those of us who travel for connections? Meeting locals and fellow travelers is one of the most rewarding parts of any trip, and right now it’s also the experience many travelers miss the most. However, the days of mingling and making friends are not over. All you need is a new pen pal.
It may be a blast from school days gone by, but the world of pen pals is still here. And now these pen pal matching platforms are more relevant than ever. All platforms have safeguards in place to encourage quality international friendships – some offer SMS or video chat services, while others encourage handwritten notes.
Here are seven penpal platforms to maintain cross-cultural connections while practicing social distancing:
Compatible
Compatipal unites like-minded people for digital conversations about everything from football to food. This platform is a newer entry into the world of pen pals; It focuses on shorter and more immediate communication (no handwritten notes) and offers instant messaging through the website. Compatipal users can search for people by interests, location, and also form groups to build digital communities around common interests – business, art, travel, language learning. The site is free to use and accepts members from all over the world.
conversation exchange
Practicing a new language with a native speaker is one of the best ways to build cross-cultural friendships – and Conversation Exchange makes those connections possible, even during a pandemic. The global language learning platform allows users to choose from over 100 different languages, from English, Mandarin and Arabic to constructed languages like Esperanto and even ancient Greek and Latin. It matches speakers with students who want to improve their fluency through speech, video or writing and also offers a collection of language resources. Basic membership is free, with the option to go ad-free for a small fee.
International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club
Founded in 2013, Geek Girl Pen Pals connects self-proclaimed nerds through written and digital communication. Despite the name, this community of 17,000 members is open to all gender identities, ages, cultures and backgrounds. Pen pals are matched by age group and interests; You can request international games, even down to a specific country. Most pen pals communicate using handwritten letters and small packages, although the founders are promoting digital communication during the COVID-19 crisis. Beyond writing, volunteers host digital get-togethers, like a virtual summer camp—including blankets and friendship bracelets. The platform is free, although its Patreon supporters get access to exclusive experiences.

penpal world
Founded in 1998, PenPal World connects millions of users worldwide through its secure, fast matching portal. The founders of PenPal World review each profile application and respond quickly to any reported issues or suspicious content.
post crossing
You might not be traveling anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean you can’t send postcards. Postcrossing is a project that connects people through the art of physical postcard writing. The idea is simple: send one to the address you provided, and then receive one from another random “postcrosser”. If you want to keep the conversation going, use the ID number on the postcard to find the sender through the Postcrossing website and send them a message. Membership is free and also includes online forums and face-to-face meetings.
wandering
Built by women travelers for women travelers, Wanderful brings thousands of members together through meetups, group travel and global events. The Wanderful community, which welcomes trans, non-binary and gender-biased travelers, is making the most of the pandemic with digital experiences focused on connection. 9 Penpal Websites for Starting Foreign Language Exchanges Online and via Snail Mail
The changes we’ve all seen over the past year with the arrival of Covid-19 has led to a renewed joy in handwriting letters. A new appreciation of time, work-life balance, and friendships have led to a revival of the pen pal.
When I was in school, I dreaded the idea of pen pals. Being forced to write monthly to another teenager from France, a person with whom I had no interests, led to a year of humorless correspondence. The ultimate threat at the end of this forced “friendship” was an exchange where I would go and stay and immerse myself in their language and culture. For me, that was the worst of everything at the time. Luckily chickenpox saved me! Now, twenty-five years later, my feelings couldn’t be more different. I love travelling, meeting people from other countries and cultures, immersing yourself in the unknown is a joy I long for. A joy that lockdown and travel restrictions have taken away from me. I like to write. I love pens and paper. What I love most is the relaxed schedule of handwriting a reply—not being rushed by an email sitting in my inbox waiting for a response.
So I decided to develop a friendship with a pen pal (or two). I did some research, and here’s a quick guide of my findings on how to (safely) start a correspondence with a pen pal.
I believe in the authentic pen pal experience, so for me it has to be handwritten letters. I admit, maybe a bit biased as a stationer! But I’m a stationer born out of a lifelong love of pens and paper.
All of the platforms I’ve researched have exceptional protections that give you the confidence to start correspondence friendships, be it international or with someone in a neighboring county.

Letter writing skills
Pen pals are a great way to get your student interested in learning the art of letter writing. Few people write social letters these days, but it’s an invaluable lesson on how to style a letter and how to write an interesting and engaging note. Letter writing is an integral part of every job and especially every job application, as applicants are required to submit cover letters with their resumes.
cultural exchange
Having pen pals from other countries helps teach your students about cultures different from their own. Your students will be able to discuss the social, cultural, culinary and religious differences between their countries and those of their pen pals. It’s a great way to get your student to be well-rounded.
Students can have friends around the world and choose to find pen pals who speak a different language to encourage them to practice their language skills.
If you are not interested in sending letters, there are many websites that offer online pen pals. As with all your online interactions, be careful not to let your student reveal too much personal information, and discuss with them what they will write in their correspondence. Make sure your student knows how to interact with others online without putting them at risk.
Pen Pal Pages
There are a number of ways to find pen pals, but websites probably give you the widest choice and you can choose what country, language and age group you want your pen pal to be from. Here are some helpful sites:

How do adults get pen pals?
If you’re looking for a pen pal, you could volunteer with a charity such as The Silver Line, who match you with a lonely older person who would like to exchange letters. If this isn’t for you, there are many websites dedicated to pen-palling – the largest of which being Pen Pal World, and Interpals.

For those of us who were encouraged to continue, most will have stopped after a short time. Some of us may have written to other pen pals as we got older, but in general, writing to a pen pal becomes less important as we work to learn, build our careers, have children, or pursue our dreams. “Real life” takes over, and we prioritize writing pen pals as unimportant – “at least,” some might ask, “what do I get out of it”? Why write a pen pal?
Communicating with a pen pal can be so rewarding that it really is worth considering – no matter what stage of life you are in and no matter how busy your life is. Writing can be very therapeutic; Studies have shown that writing about thoughts, feelings, and events deeply involves the author, which means you forget about your daily frustrations. Even better, emotional writing can help you address any issues you may be having, and the narrative you create will help you deal with and then forget about the event that troubled you.
When you open up communication with another person, not only can you share with them – maybe things you might not want to share with those closer to you – but you can also learn everything about them, their life, their passions, their frustrations and their experienced culture. There is something very special when someone takes the time to write and mail you a handwritten letter and I feel like you are connecting in a way that is unlike any other. Besides, who doesn’t love coming home to find a beautiful, handwritten envelope on their doormat? So exciting.
In case you need another reason, it’s also a great excuse to use your favorite pens a lot!
Domestic or international?
This is entirely up to you as it depends on what you want from your friendship; International penpalling means longer gaps between letters and possible language barriers. On the other hand, you are learning everything about another culture and country, and you could help your friend with English, or he could teach you some phrases in his native language. It’s a personal choice, just as your new friend’s age or gender might be.

First letter tips
It can be daunting when you sit down to write your first letter to a new pen pal. What do you write about if you don’t know the recipient? Below are some helpful tips to get you started:
Introduce yourself and briefly tell about your life and hobbies. Who are you living with? Do you have pets? What are you working?
Tell them what you did today. This is nice because it’s conversational and it breaks up the letter so your letter isn’t just a bunch of facts followed by a bunch of questions.
Ask your pen pal about their hobbies. Do you have pets and/or children? Who do they live with? Are you working or studying?
Remember, your first letter doesn’t have to be long. Keep it short, but give him lots of information about yourself and ask lots of questions so you can look forward to learning all about him in his reply letter.
Happy correspondence!

How can I get involved? Writers can submit a letter and/or photo online at ReadyToCare.com/penpals. From there, Home Instead will screen each letter for safety and security and pass it along to an aging adult.

And while we’ve all struggled to connect during COVID-19, older adults have been overwhelmingly impacted due to strict social distancing measures and limited interactions. No one knows this better than family caregivers, who may have been their only social contacts over the past year.
While there is still a need to take precautions to protect many vulnerable populations, the need to connect has never been greater. In fact, nearly half of older US adults (49%) have felt less connected to loved ones since the pandemic began.
“Loneliness is one of the most devastating issues facing our aging population, but it’s also something we can address,” says Erin Albers, vice president of Social Purpose at Home Instead. “After a year of home isolation, it takes a little creativity and a lot of intention to ensure regular contact with neighbors and loved ones, even as some social distancing measures are relaxed. A simple act of kindness, like writing a letter, can really brighten an older adult’s day.”
National Pen Pal Day: How to get involved
Caregivers work every day to make the aging population feel connected and supported; Now is the perfect time to get others involved. To reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, Home Instead encourages people to make a difference in their community by writing a letter to an older adult on National Pen Pal Day (June 1).
Generations of writers have made lasting friendships by becoming pen pals. To celebrate National Pen Pal Day, Albers suggests writing a letter to, or organizing a group for, an older adult through Ready to Care’s Pen Pal initiative:

Depending on how much contact you’ve previously had online or in person, make sure your new friend knows your name, age, gender, and where you live in the world. Then tell them about a few of your hobbies and interests, or maybe your family—whatever you feel like sharing at the moment. You could even tell them what you did that week if it’s quite interesting and varied.
Let your pen pal know where you found their details
This may not apply if you found your new pen pal on a site that uses internal messaging, but if you found their profile and address elsewhere, let them know where.
Keep it personal
Don’t be tempted to send that pen pal the same first letter you sent to everyone else you’ve ever written to. This is very obvious as it doesn’t contain any specific questions about their likes and dislikes and the chances of getting an answer would be very slim. It would be a bad first impression to make someone, and it wouldn’t be fun at all to write, so don’t do it!
Do not exaggerate
It might be tempting to tell your whole life story in your first letter – from your favorite instrument to the unusual way you hold your knife and fork. Stop! Keep the first letter short so it’s not overwhelming and give him time to get to know each other. Let your friendship blossom naturally; Throwing a bunch of facts at someone at once isn’t going to help.
Ask your pen pal a few questions
This isn’t a monologue, so make sure you also ask some questions about your pen pal’s life and make sure you do this in every single letter you send them. A letter with no questions not only comes across as rather selfish, but is also difficult to answer; Give your friend a few questions to answer – they’ll be happy and you’ll learn more about them too. If you ever have questions, take a look at this article which contains 75 questions to ask a pen pal.
Mention what you have in common
Chances are, you chose your new pen pal because you have something in common — whether it’s a love of jazz music, vegetarianism, an obsession with dogs, or a positive outlook on life. Mention these similarities in your first letter to build a sense of familiarity and learn more about the topic from their perspective when they respond.
Add a little more
Add something to your letter to give it extra dimension if you like – maybe a photo or newspaper clipping of your town, the view from where you sit down to write letters, or even a tea bag if your Pen pal lives abroad. Take a look at this article for 50 ideas for things to put in an envelope with your pen pals.
In short, just be yourself and show interest in your new friend, and you’ll write a great first letter. Good luck and happy correspondence!

9 Penpal Websites for Starting Foreign Language Exchanges Online and via Snail Mail
That’s how history worked, right?
Well, alas, this is the way of life. But even more confusing than your average ghost is the virtual pen pal. You may have met them in the wild: they seem to get along well, they speak fairly consistently, and the next logical step would be to plan a date. And yet that never seems to be addressed, no matter how many clues you drop or try to make plans. Don’t feel bad about it. People are on dating sites for all sorts of reasons, one of which is they just want someone to talk to. So here are the best ways to let your conversation partner know they have no intention of taking it to the next level.
1. You’ve been talking about an app/site for weeks
I’ve been told before that if the person you’re speaking to doesn’t ask you out for a drink within three conversations, they’re not getting to the point fast enough. While I’m not one to get things moving quickly – I want to talk to you a little first, to make sure we have some things in common and that you’re not completely awkward to date – there’s some truth not too much Spending time on online conversations. Like I said, for your own peace of mind, it’s nice to get to know someone a little first and be reasonably sure you’ll be comfortable meeting them. But once you’ve established that you’re interested (maybe after a few days of talking or something), it’s time to finally do something about it. Someone who is comfortable talking to you on the site and doesn’t make a move to ask you out or pick up on your signals to do so, doesn’t want to date you for some reason. Serious red flag for pen pals.
2. When you move on to text, there’s still no talk of hanging out
It’s usually a good sign when you finally step off the site and start texting each other. This is usually how I let someone know that I’m seriously considering dating them (or why bother?). But if you find that even texting doesn’t spark discussions about meeting up, they’ve put you in a pen pal zone.
Is that even a thing? If not, I’ll make it a thing now. Write that down and add my bad pun please.
3. You find excuses easily
This happened to me a while back with a guy I was talking to on Tnder. He was fine texting me and even snapchatting me cute pics of his dog, but every time I tried to hang out with him he would apologize. Yes, he was in law school, but I’m a firm believer that someone who wants to see you will make time for you. And for some reason, this guy just didn’t want to meet in person, no matter how many hours we spent chatting about it.
4. They don’t live anywhere near you
That’s a huge red flag. If you get messaged by someone on OKCupid or even Tinder and that person doesn’t live near you, chances are they want a pen pal, and usually of the sexting variety. It might be true that he/she is excited at the prospect of meeting someone from another place, but the point of most dating sites is to encourage real connections. You know, personally. And if that’s not really possible, then what’s the point of dating someone anyway?
5. They’re open about how they’re looking for a boyfriend
You know how some people’s profiles say they’re interested in friendship, and that’s about it? While sometimes you meet friends along the way, there are some people on dating sites who are really looking for buddies instead of lovers. And if they openly state from the start that they just want someone to talk to, you’re unlikely to change their minds, unconventional as they are.
6. They confide in you pretty deeply very soon
That’s not always the case, but I’ve learned to be very careful with someone who gets very serious very soon. If a person is already telling you their deepest, darkest secrets and you’ve only been chatting for a week, you either have serious chemistry or you’re looking for a stranger to confide in. The prospect of sharing has some sentimentality with someone you don’t know, that’s extremely inviting; because they’re a stranger, they’re less likely to take a different side to yours because they don’t know the full story. Additionally, if you know someone you know, you don’t really have to be vulnerable. Just be careful. If you feel like you’re becoming their sounding board but aren’t getting anything back, chances are you became pen pals.
7. Or they respond fairly sporadically
The key to keeping someone hooked is paying attention to that person just before they have completely given up talking to you. This gives that person hope, however fleeting, that the other person is still interested. Some pen pals are insanely good at it. They can have a really good conversation here or there, and then they disappear for a while. But just when you think all hope is lost, they reappear. A person who doesn’t give you enough time hardly thinks about actually meeting up and taking the next step. You’d better keep going unless that’s what you want too.

There are many benefits to your child having a pen pal. It encourages deeper connections and builds patience (having to wait for letters to arrive). Having an international pen pal for your child can also open up their perspective of how people live in different parts of the world.
Written communication is often a more meaningful and genuine way to connect and get to know someone. It also offers great reading and writing fun.
A pen pal can be a classmate, a friend, or a relative, whether near or far. Sometimes pen pals help each other learn different languages and cultures, and there are websites and apps that connect long-distance pen pals.
If you are concerned about safety, you can also start a pen pal relationship with someone your child already knows.

Where to find a pen pal for your child
If you want to find a pen pal in another country, there are several places you can look online. Please note that it is up to the parent/carer to research these suggested sites and groups.*
*Big Life Journal is not responsible for verifying your child’s pen pal.
If your child would love to have a pen pal, check out these tips, topic suggestions, and more to get started.
3 tips to help kids be great pen pals
1. Be yourself
Encourage your child to write as they would normally speak. The best pen pal letters are conversational, so you can almost “hear” the writer as you read.
Your child’s natural personality, interests, and sense of humor should shine through. You don’t have to impress your pen pal with fancy stories or big words. Of course, if you want to practice some vocabulary, it’s okay to add some vocabulary too!
2. Ask questions
Just like with normal conversations, it’s important to show an interest in learning more about the other person. Encourage your child to alternate between talking about themselves and asking their pen pal a few questions.
Some questions may be related to what your child just wrote. For example, if your child is writing about a fun trip to the beach, they might ask, “What was your favorite vacation you’ve taken?” or “Where have you always wanted to go?” Once the letters begin to flow, your child can ask for updates Asking for information the pen pal has shared, e.g. B. “How was your baseball game last week?”
If you ask questions, your child’s pen pal is also more likely to continue to respond. Another rule of thumb to encourage responses is to limit letters to two pages or less. Sometimes a letter that is too long can overwhelm the recipient.
3. Keep it up
At the beginning of the pen pal, decide together how often letters will be exchanged. This ensures that both pen pals are on the same page and don’t feel ignored, neglected, or impatient when a pen pal prefers to only write once a week or every two weeks.
Once you’ve agreed to some basic guidelines, move on. Try to answer in time. Creating a basic routine, like writing to your pen pal every Wednesday after school, will help make it a habit.
If there is a delay in sending letters, let the pen pal know so they don’t worry. At the same time, try to be patient if the pen pal takes l to reply. Your child can also send a short message to make sure everything is ok.
Topics to write to your pen pal about
Sometimes the hardest part of being a pen pal is coming up with something to write about. Here are some themes to try:
Places you have visited or plan to visit Favorite hobbies and interests Something interesting to learn about family members Favorite family ritual or tradition Your pets Your town and what you enjoy doing there Favorite food Your bedroom or favorite part of your house Your latest artistic or crafting activity Favorite -Outdoor and indoor activities A famous person you want to meet Favorite board or card game Favorite podcasts Favorite season Favorite color and how it makes you feel Favorite vacation Books and movies you love or are currently enjoying Your nickname or what name would you like to use and why? Should your child use snail mail or email?
Finally, you may be wondering whether your child should communicate with a pen pal through handwritten letters or emails.
Ultimately, it’s up to you, your child, and your child’s new pen pal. Handwritten letters have a special personal touch. They allow your child to work on their handwriting and there is certainly something to be said against receiving a letter in the mail with your name on it.
On the other hand, email is faster and easier. Plus it’s completely free. Sending emails can help your child learn more about computers and typing.
Alternatively, you can have your child write a letter, then scan it and email it. You can also print emails from your child’s pen pal.
Weigh your options, talk to your child, and decide what works best for you and your family.

Where can I find a snail mail pen pal?

There are many websites, organizations, and online communities dedicated to connecting people through the art of handwritten correspondence.
Some of the most popular are:
General advice is not to give out your home address but get a separate PO box. box instead. Once you get to know your pen pal better and feel confident enough, you can exchange personal mailing addresses.

Sections to Include Description Date In the upper right corner, write the date the letter was written. Informal Salutation Skip a line after the date and begin your letter with an informal salutation on the left. Most people open with: Dear + recipient’s first name
Hi
Hi
Hey there Don’t forget to follow the salutation with a comma. Body of the letter Divide your letter into several logical sections. You can start by introducing yourself and then move on to what you want to write about. The best topics for the first letter are your hobbies, your job, your field of study and the like. In many cases, you want to have a pen pal that has some common interests, so share a few things that you really enjoy and ask if they also like those things. If you’re writing with a pen pal for the first time, introduce yourself and ask them a few questions about themselves. Since your pen pal probably won’t know anything about you, it’s best to tell them something about yourself first. For example, tell them your name, age, and gender. Then tell them what you like to do in your free time or what you would like to do professionally. You can also tell them why you want to write to them. For example, you might want to learn about new cultures or improve your communication skills. In return, ask them a few questions, e.g. B. what they do for fun or what their favorite movies are. This gives them something to write about when they reply to you. For more tips, including how to deepen your relationship with your pen pal in future letters, read on!

9 Penpal Websites for Starting Foreign Language Exchanges Online and via Snail Mail

Pen Pals 101: How to Find and Keep a Pen Pal to Practise Your Language Skills
Pen Pals 101: How to Find and Keep a Pen Pal to Practice Your Language Skills
Have you ever thought about being a pen pal?
Finding a pen pal is a great way to connect with people from other parts of the world, learn a foreign language and exposure to a new culture.
Of course, nowadays we have Skype and email, which makes connecting with others around the world much easier. But the desire to connect with people in different countries has been around for way longer than the internet! The Postal Service has been helping people learn languages and make new friends for hundreds of years.
And even in this technological age, using snail mail to connect can still be incredibly effective. Thousands of people around the world want to learn a language with a pen pal, and if you enjoy writing letters (or think you might enjoy it), this could be the language learning solution you’ve been looking for.
Let’s take a closer look at what a pen pal is and how it can help you learn a language.
What is a pen pal?
Penpals are long-distance friendships that you cultivate by writing letters to each other.
The best pen pals tend to be those who are interested in learning about other people, cultures and languages. They want to connect with the world beyond their borders, but on a more personal level.
Traditionally, these opportunities for pen pals were advertised in a newspaper or magazine. There would be a brief profile of the person looking for a pen pal and you could choose to send them a letter depending on how well your interests match.
This may sound like a strange way to start a friendship, but many pen pals become best friends and forge lifelong bonds thanks to these shared interests.
Nona Avery and Alice Powers are great examples of this. After seeing that Alice was listed in a popular girls’ yearbook as an American looking for a pen pal, Nona sent her a letter from her home in England. She received a reply two weeks later, and they have sent each other biweekly letters for the past 72 years!
Technology has changed the way pen pals find each other and many websites are offering to connect friends from all over the world. But the written word remains at the core of their relationship, whether it’s through an app like HelloTalk or good old pen and paper.
How can a pen pal help you learn a language?
Pen pals have always played their part in language learning.
As I mentioned earlier, the desire to connect with someone on the other side of the world and practice your language skills before traveling to the country predates internet access and the invention of Skype. And despite all the technology available to us, the practice is still used today.
Being a pen pal is a less intimidating way to connect with someone while also practicing your writing skills in your target language. Writing a letter to send to someone can help you learn new vocabulary, practice speaking about certain topics, and improve your grammar. Developing these friendships can also create opportunities to travel to countries and experience life there as a local.
Take The Guardian columnist Libby Page, for example. As part of her French course at school, she met a girl named Juliette who came from a town in western France. Libby sent her letters in French and received a reply in English so Juliette could practice her skills. Their letters would be filled with grammatical errors and drawings to try to make their points clearer, but neither of them cared; They learned by doing. After a few months Libby had the opportunity to go to France where she stayed with Juliette and her family. They went to school and socialized together, and Libby experienced a side of French culture that she wouldn’t have been able to see if she’d just gone on vacation. An opportunity that would not have existed without her pen pal!
If you enjoy writing and connecting with other people, a pen pal is a great way to support your language learning efforts.
Who are pen pals for?
Pen pals are for anyone who wants to learn a language or learn more about another culture.
Adults often worry if pen pals are just for young people or if it’s weird for older people in the community to participate. But that’s one of the best things about being a pen pal; You don’t have to meet any special requirements.
Whether big, small, old, young, working, studying, pink, purple, from Mars or a soft spot for chocolate cake. As long as you’re open to new people and experiences, you can be a pen pal.
The 3 different types of pen pals
Technology has created many opportunities for pen pals to connect with one another. Here’s how you can customize the type of pen pal you want based on how you like to write to people:
Snail Mail: This is the traditional type of pen pal you’ve read about so far in this article. They send real letters to fixed addresses in different countries. If you like the feeling of receiving a handwritten letter, this guy is for you.
This is the traditional type of pen pal you’ve read about so far in this article. They send real letters to fixed addresses in different countries. If you like the feeling of receiving a handwritten letter, this guy is for you. Email: Nowadays, many people prefer email over the post because it’s free, fast, and easy.
Many people these days prefer email to regular mail because it’s free, fast, and easy. Digital: These are pen pals that you connect with through instant messaging or services like HelloTalk. Here you can use your mobile phone to have daily or ongoing conversations with a pen pal. If you prefer a fast-paced digital world, you have plenty of options here.
I find the most personal connections come from snail mail because a lot of time, care and attention goes into sending a handwritten letter. But you can also form deep connections with people using the other two.
10 websites to help you find a foreign language pen pal
Pen pal websites have replaced the magazine and newspaper ads that Nona and Alice used to find their pen pals 72 years ago.
There are now ways to connect with hundreds of like-minded people who want to share the language learning experience with you. It’s as easy as joining a website, uploading a profile and finding people to write to.
Many people sign up on these sites just to learn languages. So it won’t be long before you find someone who speaks your target language and wants to learn your native language.
Here are ten websites you can join to find your pen pal:
Don’t be discouraged if finding a pen pal takes a while or if you have to wait a while for a reply. This is a normal part of the process and these letters can often take longer to create if they are written in a second language.
How to find a pen pal as a language student
If you are currently attending a language school or learning a language as part of your school curriculum, there may be some pre-arranged pen pal opportunities for you.
Many independent language schools are affiliated with a local community and may be able to connect you with people in that community to become pen pals. These may come from a teacher’s personal connections or from professional connections the school has developed with a sister school elsewhere.
Your regular middle, junior high, or high school may also have ties to a student exchange program for language learning. These often provide an opportunity to connect with other students at your affiliated school as pen pals.
Either way, it’s worth asking your teachers if they can put you through a pen pal.
What to write in a letter to a pen pal
Once you’ve found a pen pal, it’s time to write your first letter.
This can be a daunting task because you want to express yourself well and make a good first impression. But don’t stress yourself too much here; It’s meant to be a fun process where you learn from your mistakes!
One of the great things about the CEFR language framework is that the levels progress in the same way as learning would. This means that letters from pen pals are accessible no matter what level you are at.
As an A1 (beginner) learner, you might just be able to ask them their name, where they are from, what their hobbies are, and what music they listen to. This can also be any information that you can disclose about yourself. But that’s great! Many conversations start around these topics anyway.
If you want a simple structure for your first letter, I would recommend something like this:
Introduction: Tell us a little about who you are, where you are from, and why you wanted a pen pal.
Tell us a little bit about who you are, where you are from, and why you wanted a pen pal. Talk about your common interests: Mention some of the common interests that made you write to them. What did you feel you could connect about and why?
Mention some of the common interests that made you write to them. What did you feel you could connect about and why? Ask some questions about her life: What information would you like to know about her?
What information would you like to know about them? Mention what you will do before their next letter: This gives them something to write to you about. For example, going to a concert might lead to a question in the next letter.
This will give them something to write to you about. For example, going to a concert might lead to a question in the next letter. Unsubscribe: Thank them for reading your letter, let them know where to reach you, and let them know you look forward to their reply.
In order to keep the conversation going and make sure your friend texts you back, it’s important to be curious. Ask questions about their lives, take an interest in who they are, and talk about the things that are important to you both. And when you’re writing about yourself, you’ll sound more interesting if you detail one or two events rather than glossing over multiple events. For example, if you’re talking about a party, don’t just say, “The food was good and everyone had a great time.” Mention something funny or memorable that happened, or describe the food or atmosphere in detail.
Mr Postman, take a look…
Once you’ve sent your letter, all you have to do is wait for your reply!
This can take a few days or a few weeks depending on where you sent your letter. So don’t be too upset if you don’t get an answer right away.
If you don’t get any response at all, don’t worry, you can try again with another pen pal and use the same ideas I shared in this post.

Why should you find a foreign language pen pal?
If you’re learning a new language or just want to perfect the one – or many – that you’ve been practicing for a while, give it a go.
Why?
Because apart from the little problem of time zones, which can easily be overcome, there is perhaps absolutely no downside to having a foreign pen pal.
Regular communication with a native speaker of your target language will do wonders for your progress. Even if you end up corresponding with another learner who is more advanced or fluent, there is much to be gained from this interaction.
This kind of interaction gets you more out of tutorials and authentic media like those on FluentU.
You have someone to correct your mistakes. Ask your pen pal to casually jot down any major mistakes, or ask them to go really crazy and do a thorough edit, leaving little marks and notes all over your writing.
You’ll be able to pick up and retain all those little, nuanced, slang phrases that throw us off balance when it comes to independent learning, especially when we’re learning with a formal teaching method like a classroom or textbook. These often omit the more informal language necessary to communicate with locals.
It’s as close to full immersion as you can get without having to move to a foreign country. In some ways, it can even be better than immersion.
Do not get me wrong. Obviously, living among speakers of your target language will put you light years ahead in your progression, but it won’t necessarily always be a personalized experience. Strangers could certainly become good friends or language partners of yours one day, but the people you meet on the street don’t always have the time or inclination to really listen to you and teach you – not like a pen pal would.
So instead of dealing with people on the street who just want you to get to the point, you can have a pen pal to support you with your studies and help you get back up when you stumble and fall through the language learning process.
And if you’re worried about talking to anyone at all, don’t! You can get into communication and start short and simple chats before extending your conversations. Be open about your current skills and be receptive to feedback.
The other side benefit of having a pen pal is right there in the name. The buddy”. Some would argue that this is the best benefit of all. As you study, you will bond with someone a million miles away, but it can feel like they’re right next door. No need to explain the benefits of friendship as we all know what it’s like…hopefully. However, international friendships are a small upgrade for learners.
If you only talk about your dear friend from, say, Copenhagen, you sound cooler in conversation. Plus, you’ll both share so many stories and so much cultural information that you’ll be able to talk about Copenhagen (or wherever) like a local. It instantly makes you sound smarter, more sophisticated, and just plain more interesting all around.
Then there is travel. You now have a friend in Copenhagen. Have you always wanted to go to Copenhagen? Guess what? Now you can go and you may not have to pay for a hotel. That’s not always the case, but then you still get a free tour guide and you can visit all the cool local spots free of Hawaiian shirts and selfie sticks.
With a foreign pen pal, you’re basically opening up a whole new world to yourself and doing the same for someone else. It can be one of the best relationships you’ve ever had. You’ll expand your mind and yes, make the world a little smaller, one conversation at a time.
Can’t wait to get started? Let us steer you in the right direction.
9 of the best websites to find a foreign language pen pal
InterPals is arguably the most popular website for language learners to meet potential pen pals.
You have a variety of options when looking for the person or people you are a good match with. You will definitely want to find someone you like so you can have a long-term relationship. Fortunately, InterPals makes this easy for you.
The first way to narrow your InterPals search is to let people know how you want to correspond. When registering, you have the option of specifying whether you would like to communicate by email or by post. That’s definitely good to know, especially for those of you who want to keep it vintage.
You can also specify the type of relationship you want to build. You have the option to choose whether you are looking for a friendship, a relationship or just want to flirt. So if you want to keep things PG, make sure you look for others who are in the same spirit. As for all you saucier language learners, well, you might just be getting more bang for your buck here (no pun intended…ish).
Another cool feature of InterPals is the search filter. Once you’re all set up and looking for partners, you can narrow down the database of potential pen pals to exactly the type of person you want to speak to, down to the person’s age and gender.
To avoid wasting time – we need to devote as much energy as possible to language training – you can set your filters to only see the newest members, the most recently modified profiles and those with the most recent recent logins. This is great because you can target your messages to those who are most active on the site and most likely to respond.
There’s also a live feed so you can instantly connect with people if you think they’re a good match.
InterPals has many other cool features to explore. If you’re interested, sign up and try them out!
Conversation Exchange is one of the simplest, if not the slickest, language exchange platforms.
Here, all of your online communication is done through an email messaging system. Of course, you are welcome to communicate by any means that you are comfortable with.
The website allows you to indicate whether you wish to communicate by post, email or in person. If you decide to communicate exclusively via the Internet, you can choose from a long list of chat software (e.g. Skype, WhatsApp, Hangouts) that you could use so that people can match you accordingly.
However, one of the better features here is profile deactivation. Do not confuse this with account deletion as both are mutually exclusive. On a platform like Conversation Exchange, where language learners like you burn with excitement for a language partner, your inbox may be flooded with job interviews and friend requests.
It might be fun at first to sift through all the messages from these new people, but after a while it can become overwhelming. You’ll spend more time checking email, sending friendly rejection messages, or simply deleting messages altogether when you could actually spend your time writing, speaking, and studying.
If you have already settled into a comfortable exchange with a foreign friend through this site and are not interested in earning more, go ahead and deactivate your profile. That way, assuming you two haven’t decided to exchange letters or some other form of communication, you can continue your pen pal on the site without being bombarded with new emails every day. When you’re ready to meet new people again, just reactivate your page and you’re good to go.
Since Conversation Exchange is one of the simpler platforms, My Language Exchange is on the other end of the spectrum.
This website offers a very comprehensive service with lots of cool features that give you no excuses for not doing your best when finding and chatting up a pen pal.
First, the site offers a translation tool to help you if you get stuck, as well as a feature that lets you insert foreign accents. This is ideal for people learning Latin languages, where accents and other symbols are present in almost every sentence. Many sites don’t always offer this, and since the meaning of a word can sometimes change with the use of an accent, symbol, or other character, it takes the stress out of having confusing or awkward exchanges — and trying to find a new one installed foreign keyboard layout on your computer.
Another great feature is that they flag inactive or invalid email users. The last thing we want to do is waste our time with people who aren’t as serious about learning a new language as we are. So thank you My Language Exchange for making life easier for all of us.
Once you’ve nabbed a friend who’s ready and willing to jump into the action with you, the site offers tips on how to communicate effectively. These focus on how to write back and forth in both languages, how to give feedback and how to figure out translations so you can make the most of your time together.
There are a whole host of other features like games and lesson plans to help you really strengthen your communication with your pen pal. It’s safe to say that My Language Exchange takes pen pals as seriously as we do. We couldn’t ask for more.
With just 3,000 members, Penpaland is one of the smaller language exchange communities on the web. Still, it has some great features that will connect you with some great people.
The coolest feature is that it gives you two ways to search for a pen pal: (1) Find Pen Pal feature and (2) Find Travel Destination Friend feature. The latter is a big bonus for those also looking for an immersion in the country.
If you’re looking to spend a year in Morocco to improve your Arabic or French, it would be nice to have a few friends in the neighborhood before you get there so you don’t collapse from loneliness and culture shock when you find yourself in an unknown country.
Also, the profile page might feel a bit familiar as it has a certain Facebook vibe to it. You can add wall posts, photos, videos, and links to websites. On the right side of the screen you can see your friends’ recent activities. Even if it’s a small community, quality counts over quantity.
If there’s one thing PenPal World values, it’s definitely user control.
As with the other platforms on this list, you can use search filters to find the best match. During the search you can be sure that you will not see anything offensive. That’s because PenPal World has a zero tolerance policy for non-PG content and conduct. When you sign up, your profile picture needs to be approved before it goes live, so you and other users aren’t unlucky enough to come across something totally inappropriate.
The platform is big on personal limits. It gives you the opportunity to break up with anyone you don’t want contact with. You have the ability to report inappropriate messages, minors can block all adults (as they should) and you can block users you don’t interact with and you can even block entire countries. Not sure why you need to do this – maybe you want to learn Quebec French and don’t want French nationals to contact you? – but regardless, the option is there if you need it.
PenPal World has both a free and paid option. With the free membership, you are allowed to contact up to three users within 24 hours. With the paid membership, you are allowed to contact up to 50 users every day. Everyone has their own preferences, but for most people, connecting to 50 users a day is a bit much, especially when everyone is replying. So don’t feel bad if you’re short on cash. Three free should be fine.
Another nice feature is the ability to update your profile in real time and also pause it if you want to reduce new contacts.
Global Penfriends focuses on helping people find the perfect match.
When you register, you must fill out a very detailed profile so that you can best match your preferences, interests and background. If you’re looking for someone exactly like you or your complete opposite, this platform gives you a better chance of knowing who that person is.
Similar to the other sites, you can chat through the site’s messaging system. However, if you are interested in snail mail, you can purchase snail mail credits for access to a user’s mailing address.
They even have a service that electronically creates, prints, stamps, and mails your letters and postcards for you. If you don’t have credits, you may find other people interested in communicating by mail by applying filters and looking for users who indicate that preference in the “Correspond As” section of their profile.
Let’s say you come across a profile that you don’t think is your cup of tea, but you know someone who might be very interested in speaking to that person. There is a Tell A Friend feature that allows you to share profiles with friends. If you don’t have a contact balance or haven’t subscribed to the site’s premium membership, you can always send someone a smile to let them know you’re interested in connecting.
Speaky isn’t advertised as a pen pal site, but it works as one. Once you set up your account here, you will be matched with multiple users who are currently logged into live chat, and there you can message as many people as you like.
Once you’ve found your perfect match, you can have your conversations the old-fashioned way by post or email, but there are some good reasons to stick with communicating via Speaky.
First off, you have a notepad that you can use to document all the words and phrases you learn as you talk to your new contacts.
The correction function is even better. You can correct your mistakes and your new friend’s mistakes right in the text box. When you correct your friend’s mistake, or when you are corrected, it keeps the old version of the sentence and the new version so you can see exactly where you went wrong. It’s an incredibly useful learning tool that you should take advantage of.
WeSpeke is advertised as a learning platform rather than a penpal platform, but it works the same way as Speaky.
Structured instruction for credits is available here. Finally, it can be useful to do some practice before engaging in a conversation. This allows you to consciously practice what you have learned while speaking and listening.
However, if you just want to talk, that’s fine too. This website matches you with people using percentages. It takes all the personal information you entered and then ranks your best matches by percentage from highest to lowest. Whether these numbers really determine how well you get along remains to be seen. You have to test it yourself!
One of the coolest features on this site is the built-in translator. Instead of having to search Google, WordReference or another translation site, you can use the translation box provided by WeSpeke. Just type in the word you want, see the instant translation, and continue your conversation. It is extremely convenient, eliminates interruptions in the flow of conversation and saves a lot of time.
Ayni is a small community but she takes great care in caring for her community.
When you sign up, you’ll receive a personal email from a member of staff welcoming you to the site and an invitation to a 30-minute video chat where you can tell them what you’ve gained from using the hope site.
In this email you will also receive a link to a Facebook group with speakers of your native language so that you can share your experiences. Here they really want you to feel among friends.
When you complete your profile, select the small option “I want a pen pal” and submit the request. You may not make this request more than once per day. This might seem a bit sluggish, but it’s that good.
Having a pen pal is building a relationship, and this site gives you the extra support you need to focus on that from the start. It’s good to try to get to know one person at a time rather than frantically going from person to person trying to get someone to talk to you.
Also, before you start your chat, the site will ask you to correct any mistakes that the person may have made in their profile introduction. It’s a great way to support each other right from the start.
Some of their handy features are the translator box, which again is very useful when you get stuck. For those of us worried about time commitments, there’s a feature that lets you specify how much time you’re willing to spend with a pen pal. It’s great to be able to connect with someone willing to put in as much or as little time as you do, without having to feel stressed about not responding to messages or waiting days for a reply.
Ayni also has a great blog (mostly related to French) with lots of great information that will help you progress in the language learning and penpal process.
Alright, now get out there and have fun!
Always be careful when it comes to giving out your personal information, even if the good outweighs the bad. These websites will guide you through the process as safely as possible, but you must also use your common sense and knowledge of internet safety.
After all this, remember that you might meet a new friend for life, so it’s worth it.
There are few greater rewards!
