A bottle is a narrow-mouthed container made of an impermeable material (such as glass, plastic, or aluminum) of various shapes and sizes that holds and transports liquids. The glass bottle represented an important development in the history of wine because, in combination with a high-quality closure such as a cork, it allowed the wine to be aged for a long time. Glass has all the properties required for long-term storage. It eventually led to ‘castle bottling’, the practice of bottling a winery’s wine at the source rather than by a merchant. In the past, wine was sold in barrels (previously in amphorae) and, if at all, bottled at the dealer. This left great and often abused opportunities for fraud and adulteration as consumers had to trust the merchant for the content. It is believed that most wines consumed outside of wine-growing regions have been tampered with in some way. Also, not all retailers were careful to avoid oxidation or contamination during bottling, resulting in large bottle variations. There are many sizes and shapes of bottles used for wine. Some of the known forms:

“Bordeaux”: This bottle has roughly straight sides with a curved “shoulder” useful for catching sediment and also the easiest to stack. Traditionally used in Bordeaux but now used worldwide, this is probably the most common type.

“Burgundy”: Traditionally used in Burgundy, this has sides that taper to a short cylindrical section at about 2/3 the height and has no shoulder.

“Champagne”: Traditionally used for champagne, it resembles a burgundy bottle but has a wider base and heavier construction to withstand the pressure of the sparkling wine’s fizz.

In 1872, British soft drink maker Hiram Codd of Camberwell, London, designed and patented a bottle specifically designed for carbonated drinks. The Codd neck bottle is designed and manufactured to include a marble and rubber washer/seal in the neck. The bottles were filled upside down, and the pressure of the gas in the bottle pushed the marble against the washer, sealing in the fizz. The bottle was pressed into a special shape as shown in the photo to the left to create a chamber into which the marble was pushed to open the bottle. This kept the marble from blocking the neck as the drink was poured.

Soon after its introduction, the bottle became extremely popular in the soft drink and brewing industries, mainly in Europe, Asia and Australasia, although some alcohol drinkers disdained the use of the bottle. One etymology of the term codswallop comes from beer sold in codd bottles, although this is generally dismissed as folk etymology.

The bottles were regularly manufactured for many decades but gradually declined in use. Ever since children smashed the bottles to retrieve the marbles, they have become relatively rare and collectible; especially in the UK. A cobalt-colored Codd bottle fetches hundreds of pounds at auction today. The codd neck design is still used for the Japanese soft drink Ramune and the Indian drink called Banta.[5]

Post Office or Postman’s Knock is a kissing party game played at teenage parties. It has been featured in popular culture in the United States since at least the 1880s.[1]

How to play[edit]

The group game is divided into two groups – typically a girls group and a boys group. One group goes to another room, such as a bedroom, called “the post office.” To play, each person from the outer group visits “the post office” individually. Once there, they get a kiss from everyone in the room. They then return to the original room.

Once everyone in the first group has their turn, the other group starts sending members to the first room.

Variations[edit]

In the “postman” variant, a person chosen by a group to be the “postman” goes outside and knocks on the door. Another person is chosen from the rest of the group to open the door and pays for the “letter” with a kiss. Then another person is chosen to be the postman, etc. The game has many variations. In some versions, playing cards are used to choose which people will become postmen and which will in turn become responders.

In the Ponyexpress variant, the “post office” is a closet or another dark room. The game is played the same, but can become more intense. It is described in the 1954 film Phffft as “…the same as Post Office but with more ‘fooling around'”.

In Laura Ingalls Wilder’s autobiography Pioneer Girl, she lists games played at teenage parties, including “post office” and “kissing games”.

Published in 1929, Is Sex Necessary? by James Thurber and E. B. White repeatedly refers to the post office and to the possibly similar party game Pillow (see, for example, pp. 43 and pp. 49-50 of Dell’s 1964 edition [copyright 1950]).

In the 1930 short comedy Whispering Whoopee by Charley Chase, Charley hires three wild women to play post office with some elderly gentlemen to try and close a real estate deal.

In the 1932 film The Purchase Price, a group of married adults in a farming community throw a party (to welcome mail-order brides) and play post office. One of the women goes into a separate bedroom and then comes into the main room and announces that there are x letters and y postcards for [man’s name]. The man and woman go into the bedroom and presumably exchange kisses and hugs, then return to the main room to general hilarity.

In the 1932 film Huddle, a mixed group of high-spirited college students converse on a train. One of the young men says, “Let’s play mail.” One of the young women remarks, “That’s child’s play!” The young man then replies, “Not the way I play it!” The same gag (perhaps not original even then) is often used later, for example in the 1934 short Three Stooges Three Little Pigskins and in the 1941 Abbott and Costello film Hold That Ghost. The joke was a recurring one from Abbott and Costello. The joke has also been used in more recent times; in the 2013 film Gangster Squad, where Ryan Gosling’s character uses it for Emma Stone’s character.

In the 1936 Three Stooges short A Pain in the Pullman, when the Stooges are thrown out of the star’s drawing room, Curly says, “I thought she wanted to play post!”

The Post Office game is referenced in the 1936 film Postal Inspector.

In Wallace Stegner’s first novel Remembering Laughter (1937), set on an Iowa farm, the plot darkens after a party where mail is played – the game is the prelude to an emotional disaster.

In the 1938 film There’s Always a Woman, Joan Blondell’s character tries to prevent a police search of her home. When an officer searches a closet, she asks him what they’re looking for and he tells her “A letter,” to which she replies, “Imagine a tall man like you wanting to play post office!”

In the story “Three Hours Between Planes” by F. Scott Fitzgerald (written in 1939 and published in 1941), the mail is mentioned as a game that can arouse terrible jealousy in children.

In a 1954 television episode of The Jack Benny Program, starring Fred Allen, Benny is surprised by Allen hiding in a closet. When Benny asks what Allen is doing in the closet, Allen says, “Play ‘Post’. Kiss me!”

In a 1954 episode of The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show when Gracie Allen is running for city council, Gracie speaks with the police chief. Towards the end of the conversation he shakes her hand and says: “It’s been a real pleasure”. Gracie replies, “If you think shaking hands is fun, you’ve never played post office.”

In the best-selling 1956 novel Peyton Place, the main character Allison McKenzie’s 14th birthday is celebrated with a “kissing game” as “post pffice”.

In a 1967 episode of the sitcom Bewitched entitled “I Get Your Nannie, You Get My Goat”, Darrin’s boss Larry Tate disapproves of Darrin and Samantha kissing on a patio at a business event for a major advertiser. Suggesting that this could be seen as unprofessional and therefore embarrassing, Mr Tate says: ‘Don’t do that. Step 1. Gather a group

Gather a group of at least six people ready to play the game.

Step 2. Agree rules

Agree to the rules. Do players have to kiss in front of everyone? If the bottle lands on a person of the same sex, does the kiss happen? Can the kiss be a peck on the cheek?

Never feel pressured to do something you are uncomfortable with.

Step 3. Sit in a circle and place the bottle

Sit in a circle with your friends, alternating boys and girls. Place an empty bottle in the center of the circle.

Step 4. The first player spins the bottle

Choose someone to go first. He or she spins the bottle until it completes at least one spin.

Step 5. Spinner kisses

Once the bottle stops, the spinner has to kiss the person facing the bottle’s mouth. If it faces the spinner, he or she spins again.

Step 6. Keep playing

The person to the right of the spinner goes next. Play as long as you like or until your lips hurt.

What the big scene between El and Max could mean for Stranger Things
