I finished a bench this morning using one of my favorite tools: spray paint. As I worked, I went through all the emails you sent me asking questions about spray paint, expressing your fear, or sharing your love of the aerosol can.

In my humble opinion, these are the top ten pros and cons when it comes to using spray paint.

Spray paint provides more even coverage without brush strokes. Spray priming is a million times faster than brush priming. Spray paint is a million times faster than applying paint. Spray paint is usually oil based and therefore more durable than water based spray paint or regular latex paint. Spray paint is easy to use outdoors with a drop cloth and some newspaper. Special spray paints can be used to transform metal, wicker, plastic, resin and other surfaces. Spray paint dries much faster than canned paint (without additives). With a spray gun in hand, you can conquer the world, or at least transform a piece of furniture, without losing your mind over a million brush strokes. Cleaning is faster – no brushes to rinse or buckets to wash. Spray paint feels a little sneaky – at least in my state – you have to be of a certain age to buy it.

Compared to latex paint, there are limited color choices aside from the great Heirloom White and some of Rustoleum’s American Accents line. Spray paint is more expensive per square foot of coverage. Spray paint requires a ventilated area to work in. You cannot use it indoors. Drops are difficult. I use my finger to wipe up drips, but they detract from the smoothness of even coverage. Spray paint is usually oil based, so cleaning your hands requires mineral spirits or a really strong scrub. Spray paint is extremely toxic (so wear a mask). A bad nozzle will splatter paint and ruin your day. Spray primer is not as durable as brush primer, so it should not be used on high traffic parts (e.g. table tops). Spray paints expire – they have an expiration date on the bottom of the container. Spray paint has an expiration date calculated from the date the paint was manufactured.

However, the expiration date printed on the bottom of the spray can does not guarantee how long the paint will last. That’s because the shelf life of spray paint depends on storage conditions, heat, and humidity.

Also, if stored properly, spray paint can outlast the expiration date on the spray can.

Why does spray paint expire?

Spray paints are made from a mixture of several paint chemicals and pigments. This includes dyes, solvents such as acetone, xylene and other color molecules. The spray also contains preservatives that prevent the paint from going bad or solidifying in the container.

Not only that, spray paints are designed with a metal, plastic, glass, or marble pea. The pea mixes the paint in the container so when you press the valve, a mixture of paint particles comes out.

These chemicals and compounds are combined in a spray tank filled with compressed air. The reaction of compounds to different storage conditions and the different chemical properties make the spray paint unstable. This is the main reason why spray paints don’t last very long.

Unopened spray paint will expire

Unopened spray paint will eventually expire due to the chemistry of the spray can. Spray paints are developed from a mixture of different paint chemicals, pigments, solvents and preservatives, all compressed into an aerosol can.

The different properties and reactions of these chemical compounds give the spray paint a limited shelf life. While other paints, such as latex or enamel, have a shelf life of 10 years, spray paint expires in 5 years unopened.

You can use expired spray paints

You can use expired spray paint but you must shake the spray can before use (for 90 seconds). When shaken, the pea inside the paint container mixes the paint particles neatly.

Also, you need to test the spray paint by spraying an expendable item first. After spraying, see how the color comes out, dries and what the finish looks like. If everything looks good, you can use expired spray paint.

There are two reasons why spray paint expires; The spray tank has lost pressure or the paint has hardened in the tank.

Spray cans are filled with compressed air (or gas) that releases the paint when you press the valve. However, expired spray paint has no air pressure, which means the spray paint won’t come out when you press the valve. This clogs the paint spray nozzle. To repair, open the spray can, pour the paint into a clean bucket, and spray the paint (with a spray gun).

Outrage arose in Los Angeles when another “artist” defaced two of the famous Banksy’s most popular works – Girl on Swing and Peeing Dog.

The man who defaced the images was charged with vandalism, essentially he was charged with destroying an existing act of vandalism, a somewhat unique circumstance, to say the least. The Los Angeles County District Attorney filed four separate vandalism charges because the alleged vandalism defaced both works and 5 days later went back and used paint remover on the walls.

I finished a bench this morning using one of my favorite tools: spray paint. As I worked, I went through all the emails you sent me asking questions about spray paint, expressing your fear, or sharing your love of the aerosol can.

In my humble opinion, these are the top ten pros and cons when it comes to using spray paint.

A bad nozzle will splatter paint and ruin your day. Spray primer is not as durable as brush primer, so it should not be used on high traffic parts (e.g. table tops).
