The Internet is omnipresent and nowadays it is hard to imagine life without it. However, if you regularly install IP security cameras, you will inevitably come across a situation where you need to install a camera in a place where there is no Internet access. This begs the question: is it even possible to install an IP camera without an internet connection?

You’ve probably guessed by now that the houses in this illustration represent some kind of electronic device, like a computer. For example, in an office you have nine individual computers. On their own, these computers are incapable of external communication, just like the houses without streets.

But that’s where the almighty Ethernet cable comes in. Like the roads that connect each house to the next, Ethernet cables can connect all nine computers in a local area to create a network of devices. This is called a local area network or LAN. When these computers are connected in a local area network, they can now communicate with each other in a simple and convenient way. You can export files, send information and exchange data. You can also access other devices on the LAN, such as a Network Attached Storage Unit (NAS) or an IP camera (see where we’re going with this?). The computers are no longer isolated units, but can now work together productively.

Now let’s take this idea and imagine it on a larger scale.

Okay, we’ve all connected our neighborhoods, giving our residents the ability to communicate with their neighbors. But let’s say we have six of these neighborhoods in one city. No one in these isolated neighborhoods has access to anyone outside their own neighborhood. There is no connection to the outside world. Nobody can go to work, nobody can visit their family. They’re all stuck.

Just like before, the answer here will be to build more roads. But instead of building a road network to just connect these nine neighborhoods, this time we’re going to give each neighborhood access to a highway. And not just any highway, but the highway. The highway. The information superhighway. A great highway giving every neighborhood and every individual within the neighborhood access to every other neighborhood in the world.

If we translate that down to the computers in our office, we’re talking about a vast network of interconnected networks. Interconnected Networks. The Internet.

When you clicked the link to open this article, you used your internet connection to read the files I stored on this server in Washington, and you can now read those words anywhere in the world. The internet is an amazing thing.

But you didn’t come here to talk about networked computers. You came to talk about security cameras. So, let’s apply this knowledge of how the internet works to our original question: do IP security cameras need an internet connection?

How do IP cameras work?

The advent of the IP camera was a game changer in the world of CCTV. Back in the day, security cameras really didn’t do much. They would send raw video information to a central DVR and that’s about it. All video compression and intelligent analysis was done in the DVR, not the camera itself. Think of the analog security camera as the eyeball and the DVR as the brain. The eye itself can’t do much other than send information to the brain for processing.

Then came the IP camera and changed everything. IP stands for “Internet Protocol”. The name is a bit confusing as it doesn’t actually require internet. But it uses the same kind of network technology.

When I connect my security camera to my local network with an Ethernet cable, my camera becomes another device on my network, another house in my neighborhood if you will. According to the figure above, this means that I can access my IP security camera from any other device on the same local network. My phone, my computer, my NVR. I can load video feeds and configure the camera from anywhere in my own neighborhood.

So, do you need an internet connection for your IP cameras?

no Despite the name “Internet Protocol”, IP surveillance cameras do not require an external connection to the Internet. All that is required is a connection to your local network.

In its simplest form, this LAN could appear as if your IP camera were plugged directly into your PC’s Ethernet port. In this case, only two devices would be connected in a LAN: your PC and your IP security camera. You can access your IP security camera from your PC as long as it stays connected to your camera. (This setup isn’t ideal for most IP security camera setups, but it can be a handy way to put your gear to the test.)

This could also appear as if your IP camera is connected to an Ethernet switch that is also connected to a few different computers. These computers do not need to have internet access to access your security camera as they are all on the same local network.

Think of this as your own small condominium within a neighborhood. That means your NVR has full access to anything plugged directly into its PoE switch. Remember that if your NVR is not connected to your local network, you cannot access your NVR or IP camera from your PC or mobile device. You can only access your surveillance feeds from the NVR itself.

What is the benefit of connecting your IP camera to the internet?

Although no connection to the internet is required to use your IP security camera, it can be a good idea to connect your cameras to the internet to get the most out of your IP cameras.

Without an internet connection, you can only access your surveillance cameras via your local network. But if you connect your cameras to the internet, you can view and manage your cameras anywhere in the world as long as you’re connected to the internet, whether you’re using a phone or a PC. This is the biggest benefit of connecting your cameras to the internet as you can keep an eye on your belongings anytime, anywhere.

How do you connect your IP camera to the Internet? It’s easy. As long as your local network is connected to the internet, everything connected to your LAN is also connected to the internet. That means if you have an internet router connected to a switch, you can always connect your IP camera or NVR directly to that switch to ensure all your security devices are connected to the internet. Last year, German officials labeled an innocent-looking smart doll, My Friend Cayla, as an illegal “spy device” and asked parents to disable it. According to a complaint filed by consumer groups in 2016, the blonde childlike doll recorded conversations, translated them into text and shared data with third parties.

This was despite the toy’s assurances that it would keep things confidential. If you ask the Cayla doll, “Can you keep a secret?” the doll would say, “I promise not to tell anyone; it’s just between you and me.” Manufacturer Genesis Toys, which is incorporated in Hong Kong and has its headquarters in Los Angeles, did not respond to a request for comment.

Internet-connected smart toys are growing in popularity, with the $6 billion market projected to grow to $18 billion by 2023, according to Juniper Research.

Federal law requires companies to obtain parental permission before collecting and sharing information from children under the age of 13. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act also mandates clear privacy policies. It gives parents access to their children’s data and allows parents, among other things, to have their personal data deleted.

Consumer groups and security experts have identified other smart toys that raise privacy and security concerns.

Take the Fisher-Price Smart Toy Bear, a teddy bear stuffed with a microphone, camera, speaker, pressure plate and accelerometer to know when it’s going to be launched into the air. The toy can converse with a child and is familiar with world affairs. Mattel, which owns Fisher-Price, said it has stopped producing the toy, but it can still be bought at major retailers like Amazon and Walmart for $55.99.

In April, Indiana University researchers announced that they had discovered a security flaw that allowed them to gain unauthorized access to the toy bear’s nose camera.

“It is capable of capturing children or their families without warning that the camera is in use,” the researchers write. “There is no light or other indication to let the user know the camera is operational. Because the bear works as a screenless phone, the normal screen-based notifications are unavailable to protect the user.”

In a statement, a Mattel spokesperson said the company “takes the security and privacy of our consumers very seriously.”

“Since the product was manufactured in 2015, we have implemented various security updates,” spokeswoman Lisa Fujioka said. “We are not aware of any data breaches related to this product.”

Earlier this month, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group that parents should be cautious about buying Amazon’s popular kids’ tablet, the Fire HD Kids Edition. The group cited research from the Mozilla Foundation, which warned that “Amazon learns your child’s personal information from birth.”

The tablet comes with “FreeTime” software, which acts as a walled garden for children, allowing parents to restrict what children can see and do on the device. Amazon collects usage data about children’s tablet activities so parents can monitor what their children see and read. However, the company said it does not share children’s data with third parties. (However, if parents allow children access to third-party apps, those third-parties may collect a child’s data, in accordance with their privacy policy).

“This product was designed from the ground up for kids, with kids and parents in mind and their priorities,” said Kurt Beidler, Director of Kids & Family at Amazon. “It has been used by over 10 million children. Parents and kids both love it. We’ve earned parents’ trust by respecting things that are important to them. And child safety, child education, and child privacy are things that rank first on that list.”

Amazon may ask for a child’s username (which can be any word), gender, and date of birth to set up a profile. Parents must contact customer service to delete their children’s activity data. In Amazon’s words, the new $129.99 Fire HD 8 Kids Edition tablet is “not a toy.”
