Though it’s been on the market for almost five years, local retailers say the five-dollar product has suddenly surged in popularity — mostly as straight people are starting to discover something gay people have known for years: the stuff causes a transient Dizziness and a sudden flush of heat.

“It’s like little men running down your neck and then blowing your ears out,” says a Lost & Found dancer. “Something like a cocaine high for about two minutes. You dance and suddenly you feel like your brains are going to shoot through the roof. You get so high and feel like the music is just pushing you around.”

The Food and Drug Administration, which regulates things like this, has only just started hearing about Locker Room. “We’ve had reports of people getting high on it,” says Public Affairs Officer Wayne Pines, “but there’s no control over it.”

Still, health officials aren’t convinced the stuff is harmless. “It causes an increase in heart rate and a drastic change in blood pressure,” says Gary Oderda, director of the Maryland Poison Information Center. “It could be very serious for someone with a heart problem.”

Despite the health warnings, Locker Room’s popularity continues. At a recent Anita Bryant Roast at the Pier Nine Disco, one of the items auctioned off to raise money for gay rights lobbying was “a year’s supply of fitting rooms.”

“Well, if you’re anything like Ron, you think we mean 200 bottles,” said the auctioneer. “We couldn’t afford that much, so we offer a dozen bottles.”

Spending five minutes in one of the sex or head shops around town, or just glancing at the tables set up by street vendors, shows that Locker Room is certainly not an obscure item. People ask for prices. They’re asking about Rush and another product called Heart-On.

“You get a brainwave, man,” says one customer who appears to have just flown in from the lunasphere. “I sell fifty bottles a day at five dollars a bottle,” says a man behind the counter.

How to use amyl nitrite:
