An online pub quiz is an ideal team building or team bonding activity. It’s fun and easy to pull off anywhere, for any occasion. All it takes is an exciting topic, challenging questions and a fun-loving audience.

And of course, some great tricks in store to help you deliver an unforgettable quiz experience.

In this article, we share with you 13 great tips that will help you, step by step, to do just that and beyond.

Continue to play! Let’s get in right away.

1. Choose the right platform

If you already have your favorite video conferencing platform, discover ways you can use it to take a quiz. If you use Webex like we do, you can run a Slido quiz right in your Webex Meetings platform.

With Slido built into Webex, taking a quiz is incredibly quick and easy – just start your Webex meeting, click the Slido icon on the right side panel under Apps, and then click Quiz. You can now start adding your questions.

When you’re done, click Start. Your participants can guess the correct answer using the right side panel directly in their Webex window without having to switch devices.

Do you use Zoom meetings? You can create your quiz in Slido, open it in full screen and host it by sharing your screen with your participants.

2. Prepare your quiz: choose a topic and find the questions

Once you’ve decided on your technology, we’ll fill the quiz with some cool questions.

Find an exciting topic for your quiz. What will it be this time – 90s music, world capitals, Harry Potter quiz? Or you can also steal this remote work fact quiz or this social media trivia quiz.

There are two more options in Slido that will help you make awesome trivia questions.

Use a quiz template

You can find several great quiz templates in your Slido account. How to use the templates. Use the random quiz question generator

We recently added a feature that suggests as many quizzes as you want. Just click on the Rubik’s Cube icon in the top right corner of your quiz settings window.

3. Think of different types of questions to break the flow

Here’s a great tip from our two colleagues – Kristina and Zuzana – who run our regular webinars and pub quizzes.

They recommend preparing several types of quiz questions to break the dynamic of your pub quiz and make it more interesting. For example, some questions may be asked in classic multiple-choice style, while others make quick true or false statements.

You can also add a picture to your quiz question and ask your participants what they see in the picture. See how it works in the video below.

4. Prepare additional facts and details for each question

Just revealing the correct answer without putting the question in a broader context is a missed opportunity.

Make your quiz as insightful as possible and prepare fun facts or additional details related to the topic of the question. Your participants will learn a lot of new things!

5. Practice the quiz beforehand

This is crucial. Repeat the quiz at least once before the session so you don’t get caught off guard.

Try it out with your friends or family – they will help you find some minor bugs which you can then tweak.

A previous test of the quiz will also help you to check whether the questions are not too difficult or, on the contrary, too easy.

6. Have two presenters to change the dynamics

Consider having two hosts to make the quiz easier – it will make your pub quiz more dynamic and natural.

The two quiz masters can talk and take turns reading out the questions.

7. Explain how people can join

Once you’re on the air, present your quiz and say what it will be about. If you have a prize for the winner, praise them too – you’ll really get your attendees going.

It is also very important to ensure that your quiz takers know how to take and play the quiz.

Explain the join instructions clearly and repeat them at least once until you are 100% sure everyone is on the same page and ready to play.

You can also tell your quiz takers to use your video conferencing platform’s chat feature to contact you if they have trouble taking part.

8. Play some background music

Ease the wait while your participants take the quiz. Play upbeat music and keep talking to your audience.

You can also consider leaving the music on throughout the quiz, but make sure it’s not distracting or too loud.

9. Read each question and option aloud

This may seem obvious, but even if your participants can see the questions and options on their devices, it’s important that you always read them to them.

It will also make the quiz feel more interactive and dynamic.

After you uncover the correct answer, comment on how your participants voted and clarify the correct answer.

10. Show the leaderboard and celebrate the winner

Once the quiz is over, view the leaderboard. Give the winner a big shout out and congratulations on winning the prize.

Don’t forget to provide clear instructions on how the winner should contact you so you can send them the prize. For example, display your contact email address on the screen.

11. Celebrate the runners-up too

While the leaderboard is displayed, also give credit to those in second and third place. Sometimes seconds make the difference between the winners and the runners up did a fantastic job too!

12. Ask your quiz takers for feedback

Surely you want to know how well you did and how your participants liked the quiz. Feedback will help you make your next quiz even better.

Create a short feedback poll like the following:

How did you like today’s quiz? (Valuation)

Was the quiz too short, too long, or just right? (multiple choice)

would you join again Yes/No (multiple choice)

Do you have any comments or suggestions for improvement? (open text)

13. Have fun!

And last but not least: Get in a good mood and enjoy your quiz to the fullest!

In honor of tomorrow’s second National Pub Quiz Day in the UK, here are some of the best pub quiz tips from quiz expert Alan Connor.

1) Be sparing with the alcohol

A few pints can ease the stress of a pub quiz, but the TV quiz battlefield is littered with the corpses of those who succumbed to the Dutch bravery. Hangovers are also a surefire way to lose.

2) When in doubt, get Charlie out

For multiple-choice questions, studies recommend that if you don’t know, when given four options, you should choose B or C — and C is most likely your friend.

3) Keep moving forward

If you answer a question incorrectly, you cannot go back. If you delve into this, you will doubt perfect answers in the future. Luckless Mastermind participants call this phenomenon “pass spiral”.

4) Use bad handwriting

If you’re unsure of a spelling in a written quiz, badly spell the words. Sharp exercise, but 12 percent of pub quizzers admit they do it.

5) Enter only a last name

In most tests, this is enough to demonstrate your knowledge, so don’t add any extra information that might misunderstand!

6) Don’t trust your guess…

…at least for multiple choice questions. One study suggests that you lose a point just 20 percent of the time if you change your mind.

7) It’s good to talk

Even if you’re not sure, tell your teammates whatever comes to mind. What is the difference between two half facts? Similar…

8) Say anything

Never happen. Never leave a space on an answer sheet. If you’re asked about a year, any year is better than none. As a pointless candidate is advised: In case of doubt Central African Republic.

9) Hum before you think

Buzzer participants learn to press once they realize they will remember the answer. Everyone else is locked out and the information will be on your lips shortly…hopefully.

10) Don’t take it too seriously

As moderator, Magnus Magnusson advised potential masterminds: “It’s only a bloody game”.

The days of Alex Trebek’s treasured Jeopardy! and Scott Rogowsky’s controversial HQ Trivia are behind us, but that doesn’t mean Trivia is over. There are dozens of trivia apps and trivia games online, and most of them really are packed with delightfully addictive competitions that have users accidentally adding hours a day to their screen time.

I’ve played a few dozen of the free versions of trivia apps available on my iOS phone and picked my favorites. Here are seven of the best quiz apps available for download.

1. Danger! World Travel

You can’t win real money like you can on the show, but it’s a fun experience. Photo credit: DANGER! World Travel

The real danger! The show is in turmoil right now. Following the death of beloved and longtime host Alex Trebek last year, the show cycled through guest hosts to find a permanent replacement, including winner Ken Jennings, journalist Katie Couric, and talk show host and overall controversial guy Dr. oz . The games app, which is free to download for Android or iOS, still shows Trebek as the host.

You have two game options, either alone in offline mode or against two randomly assigned opponents in a match. The flow is the same as Real Jeopardy, with three themes and three numerical point choices underneath, allowing you to choose the difficulty of the question and the points you get for answering correctly. However, unlike the show, the answers are multiple choice questions. Players can use power-ups to help them in each round, for example removing answers that aren’t correct or giving you a little more time to think. You can’t win real money like you can on the show, but it’s a fun experience. There aren’t many add-ons like the other games, but I find the simplicity of this trivia game reassuring.

Danger! World Tour is available for free on the Apple App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android.

2. Trivia Star

Trivia Star is the ideal trivia game to play while watching TV or listening to a podcast. Credit: Trivia Star

If you don’t want to play against opponents, Trivia Star is probably one of the best trivia apps out there. The questions supposedly get harder as the game progresses, but I didn’t experience anything really challenging. Trivia Star is the ideal trivia game to play while watching TV or listening to a podcast – the stakes are low because you’re not playing against an opponent, and the questions aren’t too difficult to answer while multitasking.

Trivia Star is available for free on the Apple App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android.

3. Trivia Royale

This game almost feels like its own social media network at first. Photo credit: trivia royale

Trivia Royale first asks you your age, lets you create an avatar, and prompts you to turn on your camera “to start face tracking.” It recommends you join Facebook so you can play with your Facebook friends, which means this game almost feels like its own social network at the beginning. Then you choose from five categories – Disney, Friends (the TV show), General, History, or Logos (like brands) – and you’re matched with a random real or bot opponent. More themes will be added as you play, and if you pay $2.99 per week for the premium version, you’ll have more access to fun, premium, and pop culture-themed themes like Netflix, Animal Crossing, and Bachelor Nation. It’s free and downloadable for Android or iOS, but the premium version also gets rid of ads, gives you access to live events, and gives you endless tickets, which you need to enter a Trivia Royale tournament. Because the trivia questions are broken down into more specific categories, they can be more challenging than the questions in other games. So if you like to be stumped, this might be one of the best quiz apps for you.

Trivia Royale is available for free on the Apple App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android. The app also contains in-app purchases available for premium features.

4. Psycho! Outsmart your friends

Ellen’s Psycho! reminiscent of Balderdash, where you write the weirdest but still sane answers to questions to trick your friends. Credit: psych!

Psycho! was developed by Ellen DeGeneres and seems to be inspired by games like Balderdash, where you’re encouraged to come up with the weirdest but still sane answers to trivia questions to trick your friends. Each player responds to a dumb but still plausible answer, and once all the answers are collected, players must work out which answer is correct. If someone selects your submission or if you answer correctly, you get a point! For $2.99 you can remove ads.

One of the biggest problems with this trivia app is that you have to pay for some of the decks. And while Psych! is great for a game night, you can’t play with randos online or bots – you have to be with a group of friends who also downloaded the app on their phones to play.

Psycho! is available free of charge in the Apple App Store for iOS and in the Google Play Store for Android. The app also contains in-app purchases available for premium features.

5. Popcorn Quiz

This movie quiz game is a great app for cinephiles. It’s free for Android and iOS and includes quizzes for all types of movies and genres. You’ll earn popcorn, which you can use to change your avatar or spend on premium question packs, and points can earn you bonuses that you can use as lifelines for movie questions that are a bit too difficult. There is a single player and a multiplayer mode. The questions are more challenging than other games, mainly because they are movie specific.

Popcorn Trivia is available for free on the Apple App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android. The app also contains in-app purchases available for premium features.

6. Trivia crack

Trivia Crack’s branding and user experience has been so solid throughout that you really have to do it to them. I started playing Trivia Crack in 2014 when Barack Obama was President and I was a student at the University of Arizona to avoid any classwork by beating my peers with the then-useless stuff floating around in my skull. The game is still pretty much the same as I remember it from half a decade ago. You choose from five game options: Classic, Survival, Treasure Mine, Triviatopics and Triviathon. Then compete with friends or random opponents and play trivia across a series of six categories – Entertainment, History, Sports, Arts, Geography, Science, and “Crown,” which gives you the option to choose the category – until there’s a winner . There is a fun in-app messaging option to chat with your friends while you play.

The main downside, as is to be expected for most free apps, is that it’s pretty ad-heavy. For $1.99 you can buy the premium version which is add-free. I’d also say that the questions are fairly easy, so I wouldn’t recommend this unless you’re looking for something particularly challenging.

Trivia Crack is available for free on the Apple App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android. The app also contains in-app purchases available for premium features.

7. Trivia Crack 2

Eerily similar to the original Trivia Crack, in this trivia game’s classic option, you spin a wheel that lands on one of six question categories: Entertainment, History, Sports, Arts, Geography, Science, and “Crown,” which gives you the option to choose which Category. The goal is to answer correctly for each of the categories to win representative characters. The first player to win all characters wins the game.

Like the original version, it’s not particularly challenging and the free version of Trivia Crack 2 has a lot of ads. The in-app purchases in this quiz game are pretty wild too – they go as high as $99.99 for some items. They are primarily for in-game currency that can buy power-ups and help you win. I don’t particularly like the pay-to-win structure here, which makes playing with people paying for power-ups a lost experience. Unlike the original version, Trivia Crack 2 offers more quiz-based gameplay options if you get bored with the classic version.

Trivia Crack 2 is available for free on the Apple App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android. The app also includes in-app purchases for premium features.

Our look at the best trivia app features some newcomers to the trivia game, as well as some well-known mainstays with serious staying power. Even after the great trivia app boom of 2018, these apps have stayed because they’re fun, easy to pick up and put down, and an opportunity to show your wits.

The best quiz apps for Android and iOS

1. Danger! (Android, iOS: Free)

Danger! brings the popular game show to your mobile device, giving you the opportunity to play solo games offline or compete with other players in a head-to-head online match.

The answers don’t come in the form of questions in this version of Jeopardy; Instead, you’ll be given multiple choice answers and given power-ups that can help you with some of the harder questions. (Certain power-ups give you more time to answer, while others take away a wrong option.)

With questions across 26,000 categories, you probably won’t see too many replays, while a world tour element lets you compete in different environments. In addition to head-to-head matches against either strangers or old friends, Jeopardy features live events and leaderboards to keep the competition fresh.

2. Trivia Crack 2 (Android, iOS: Free)

Trivia Crack’s sequel, Trivia Crack 2, introduced new game modes including a head-to-head time attack mode called Tower Challenge. as well as daily challenges and quests – all of which you can play against your Facebook friends or random opponents. You can even form teams of like-minded know-it-alls.

Trivia Crack’s classic mode remains, in which players compete to collect themed characters that reflect trivia categories. There are even more characters to collect in the sequel depending on the question topic.

Trivia Crack 2 is a free-to-play app, although ads become a familiar and not always welcome site. You can purchase a paid membership to get these things done – subscriptions start at $4.99 per month. You can also unlock other bonuses including endless lives, special packs and discounts.

3. Psycho! (Android, iOS: Free)

(Image credit: Warner Bros. International Enterprises)

What do you call a group of zebras? What on earth is a mumpsmus? Inspired by party games like Balderdash, Psych! lets you invent the craziest but most plausible answers to these questions to fool your friends and earn points. The app is free, but there are in-app purchases to disable ads and unlock new question packs.

Each player secretly submits a fun but plausible answer, and once collected, the submissions (and the correct answer) will appear on your phone’s screen, with players trying to figure out which one is correct. If someone chooses your post, you get a point, and if you guess the correct answer, you get a point as well.

The fact that you can play with other people in the same room makes Psych one of our favorite party games, but it’s also one of the best trivia apps for showing off how much you know.

4. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Android, iOS: Free)

Danger! isn’t the only TV game show getting a mobile makeover. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire has also made the jump to touchscreen devices, where it puts players through a series of trivia questions of increasing difficulty. Classic lifelines like 50:50, Ask The Audience, and Ask An Expert are also back.

They play for points and leaderboard positions rather than real money. You can also use in-app purchases to build your bankroll and purchase mystery boxes. But other than that, the Millionaire experience has shrunk to a smartphone screen.

Trivia 360 offers thousands of trivia questions across a variety of game categories to keep things fresh without distracting you with too many bells and whistles. The questions can be in the form of multiple choice, true or false and identification questions. Users can select question categories and submit or rate questions, as well as view rankings.

Ads in Trivia 360 can appear aggressive at the end of rounds, but an in-app purchase can remove ads if you find them too intrusive.

It would be impossible to calculate the hours of productivity gobbled up by Sporcle (opens in new tab), which launched in 2007 as a trivia website and app that recreates the addictive pop quizzes Sporcle routinely serves up.

Sporcle offers thousands of quizzes on a variety of subjects including history, entertainment, science and literature, with players attempting to list all possible answers that fit a specific question. Just like the website, the Sporcle app is regularly updated with new quizzes, and players can even sign up for a Sporcle account to comment on, rate, and create and upload quizzes of their own.

Quizzes that require the on-screen keyboard aren’t nearly as fun as the web, but thankfully the app offers other types of questions and answers that require nothing more than typing and a thorough knowledge of all the trivial things.

As you play, you unlock coins that give you access to new features and rewards. And as you build your playlist of songs, you’ll face tougher competition as you try to outperform your competition.

4. DIY trivia game night

Although it requires a lot more muscle power, we probably had the most fun putting together our own trivia nights with friends. By their very nature, the questions are obviously more tailored to your group, allowing you to highlight the interests you all share. (We’ve had recent rounds on the Chicago Bulls in the ’90s, Parks and Recreation, the late great John Prine, and the chart-topping 1978s.) So how do you do it? Adjust the following as you see fit, but this worked wonders for us:

1. Have a different host for each game who is responsible for drafting the questions, moving from round to round, and recording scores.

2. Have the responses texted to the host at the end of each round.

3. Enter the answers for each round once all answers have been entered.

4. Submit a total score check for each player or team every other round.

5. Have a slideshow for all questions on a common screen so hosts don’t have to re-read lengthy questions.

In these weird and wacky days when we all have plenty of free time, people have found interesting and imaginative ways to connect with friends and family.

A new trend are pub quizzes. A hugely popular English pastime, the Tuesday night quiz was always the talk of the town at the ‘local’ pub. Now they are online.

Not from UK? Don’t worry! You can make one too – and we think you’ll love it!

It’s time to improve your general knowledge, improve your geography facts and acquire the skills to complete your own epic pub quiz.

So how do you host one?

All you need is a video hosting platform like Zoom, a bunch of willing friends, family or co-workers who have access to pen and paper, and a big smile on your face.

My suggestion for pacing your quiz – break it up into sections for different topics, for example: world geography, history, fashion, pop culture or music. Then do a brief introduction explaining what to expect for your attendees.

Read each question slowly and clearly and tell them to write the number of the question and its answer on a piece of paper. To keep the excitement going, uncover the answers after each section – and let them add up their points after each round.

If you want to create a slightly more immersive atmosphere for your guests, find a funky countdown timer on YouTube and play it for 20 seconds while they try to write their answers.

How many questions should be in a quiz?

Quizzes are shorter than tests. Whereas a test may have 50 questions or more, a quiz typically has 10 or fewer questions.

Wikipedia

If you’re a teacher or online course creator, you know that assessing your students’ understanding of the material is one of the most important things you can do. How else can you (or your students) determine if the class is serving its purpose?

You probably also know the best way to determine this is through a test. Or maybe it’s through a quiz – or maybe an exam. What is the difference? is there a difference

The short answer is that they are essentially the same – but different. Confused? These words are often used interchangeably, but in an educational setting they refer to different forms of evaluation.

Just so you know Whether you’re creating a quiz or a test, do it online with Jotform! Customize a free template to start collecting responses from any device. Ideal for distance learning.

Let’s explore the differences between a quiz and a test (and an exam) by looking at the format, purpose, and length of each. When we’re done, you’ll know how and when to use each to design your course and assess your students.

General implications of quiz vs test vs exam

Of the three formats we define, “test” is the most general term and has the widest application. Outside of an academic setting, you might have a blood test, an eye test, or a driving test. You can test something to see if it works.

Tests and exams are forms of testing. “Quiz” often implies a short or informal test, such as B. an unscheduled quiz (a pop quiz). Sometimes people even take quizzes for fun. Think of a pub quiz or a quiz show on TV. An exam has a more formal connotation and you typically only see this in an academic setting. As an abbreviated form of the “examination”, it implies a deeper and more final assessment.

Although there is no formal standard, in an academic setting these terms often refer to a hierarchy of assessments – with a quiz being the most casual, an exam being the most serious, and a test somewhere in between.

What is a quiz?

A quiz is the shortest, most common, and most casual form of assessment.

Purpose and Valuation. In a classroom environment, the most common way for instructors to provide quizzes is for both instructors and students to see how well students understand the material. Quizzes help everyone focus on weak areas. A quiz is a small amount of material, e.g. B. a lesson, page or concept. Quizzes help keep students engaged and also prepare them for tests. The results may or may not count towards the overall grade of the student’s course. If this is the case, they usually account for a much smaller percentage than tests or exams.

Format. Formats for quizzes typically include fill in the blank, multiple choice, and true or false. Quizzes typically do not contain interpretive, open-ended questions, such as B. Essay Questions.

Length. Quizzes are shorter than tests. While a test can have 50 or more questions, a quiz usually has 10 or fewer questions.

What is an exam?

A test is the standard assessment technique used to determine grades in both high school and college classes. Tests are longer than tests. Some faculty award grades solely based on test scores.

Purpose and Valuation. A test covers a larger portion of course material than a quiz—usually an entire unit or section. Test scores are typically an important factor in determining a student’s final grade.

Format. The types of questions on tests vary more than those on quizzes. Like a quiz, they often contain multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and true-or-false questions, but they also usually have open-ended questions, such as essays or short-answer questions, where the student is asked to explain a concept in their own words. There can even be image-based or listing and matching questions.

Length. Tests are longer than quizzes and typically have 40 to 50 questions or more.

What is an exam?

Like quizzes and tests, an exam is a tool to measure your students’ mastery of course content, but it has more serious consequences. An exam is more formal in nature and can often decide whether or not a student passes a class or course (as such it may be taken on a pass/fail basis). If the student fails the exam, they are usually required to retake the exam or retake the entire course.

The difference between a test and an exam can be a bit blurry as some courses combine the two. Examinations usually cover the entire course material. The format and duration of an exam is similar to that of a test, but is generally longer and more comprehensive. A midterm test or similar test can be called an exam because it takes place at a set interval and is a major factor in the final course grade.

Now that you understand the difference between a quiz, test, and exam, you can plan your course assessments to best serve your students. When it’s time to create your assessments, use Jotform’s free online quiz templates. These templates make it easy to create custom quizzes that you can embed on a website or share with a link – and your Jotform account securely stores all the answers for easy access from any device.

How long should a quiz take?

If you have an evening devoted to a quiz, whether a corporate event or a pub quiz, somewhere between 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 hours is ideal – I’d probably plump for 2 hours of quizzing with a break in the middle.

Wikipedia

Here at QuizQuizQuiz, we’re not currently running weekly pub quizzes, instead focusing on company quizzes and question writing (plus some pretty exciting ideas in the pipeline). However, we host hundreds of quiz nights each year and have written many, many pub quizzes in the past, so you feel pretty qualified to talk about how to put together a damn good quiz for any type of audience.

In this post, I’ll limit myself to talking about quiz rounds as a whole, rather than specific questions (and their balance within a round and a quiz), which we’ll surely come back to at a later date. I’m talking about the overall structure of a quiz rather than the details.

how long should it be How many rounds? How big should these rounds be? How hard should it be? Which subjects are included? What should I avoid? What rhythm should I establish in each round? What embellishments contribute to the magic?

After listing all of these questions, I realize that there is quite a lot for a blog post. It goes without saying that these will not be prescribed answers and that I and no doubt you will have taken many excellent quizzes, the format of which is very different from what I outline below. However, these suggestions reflect personal preference, a little common sense, and generally what we’ve found at QQQ over the years works best for us.

So first off, how long should a quiz be? Well, we’re asked to run quizzes that last anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 1/2 hours, and we like to think that whatever the length, we’re giving our customers exactly what they’re looking for (i.e. top-notch quiz entertainment). ). However, these shorter ones often only use the quiz as part of a larger showcase event or as an interlude between courses of a formal meal, so I’ll focus on those where the quiz is central to the event.

If you are having a quiz night, be it a corporate event or a pub quiz, between 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 hours is ideal – I would probably plan for 2 hours quiz with a break in the middle. This is enough time to fit in a variety of question types and topics to build real momentum, to make people feel like they’ve gotten their money’s worth, yet can be broken down into practical chunks to help participants who are desperate are looking for something like a cigarette or something radical like a conversation with colleagues have the opportunity to do so.

If it’s less than an hour and a half I often feel like we’ve missed things, and more than two and a half hours, well maybe for true enthusiasts, but it can be exhausting for everyone (think a movie that lasts 2.5 hours – tiring and you just sit back and relax…) and if half the participants aren’t extremely drunk by the end you’ll be surprised.

And on a similar topic, how many rounds should there be?

Somewhere between 5 and 8 I think, considering a round should almost always be a table round (pictures/puzzles, that kind of thing). 4 can sometimes feel like too little, like someone is missing out on their area of expertise and feels disadvantaged. This can be addressed by including many different topics in hybrid rounds, but I’m all for a good spread anyway. You don’t want to have too many rounds though – people will forget what came from where and just feel a little confused. However, it is quite difficult to answer this question without moving on to the next one, viz

How big should these rounds be?

Here I think the important answer is that it can and should vary. Although it may sometimes make practical sense, 6 rounds of 10 questions ad infinitum is a shame. Think about the time rather than the number of questions – I don’t think a round should be much less than 15 minutes, and I don’t think even the meatiest rounds should be much longer than 25 minutes. You will be given 10-15 questions in this section, but there may also be some multi-part questions with many different points available.

Part of our modus operandi is to keep players on their toes – so you know roughly what’s coming, but not exactly – mixing up the pace of the rounds and the number of questions and points per round is a technique we use achieve that.

There’s a lot more to come, but what was the longest/shortest quiz you’ve ever taken? What is the ideal length and structure of a pub quiz?

How long do pub quizzes last?

Some quiz can be very long and last for several hours, but usually, they last about 2 hours. Pub quiz started as a way to get customers on quiet nights. It worked so well, that now quiz nights are some of the busiest days for pubs, only behind days with big sports events.

Wikipedia

So what is a pub quiz?

How does quiz work?

Here’s how to find one

If you walk around the UK you will find that most pubs have signs for a pub quiz or quiz night. If you are new to the country, you might be very confused by this. But no worry. We are here to explain everything about the pub quiz. As the name suggests, it is a quiz that takes place in a pub. Some quizzes can be themed (music, sports, the 80’s and current events are common themes) or they can be random. Some quizzes can be very long, lasting several hours, but typically they last around 2 hours. The pub quiz started to attract customers on quiet nights. It’s worked so well that quiz nights are now among the busiest days for pubs, behind only big sporting days. The first thing you need is a team. You can go with a group of friends or team up with people who are sitting near you. Even if you go alone and don’t know anyone, you will find a team. The most important part of a quiz is choosing the right team name: it should be funny, smart and if it makes fun of someone or something better. You may have to pay a small amount of money to play, never more than £5. The money is used to pay the prize, which can be cash, vouchers, or a bar. There is a person called the quizmaster who asks all the questions, checks the score and announces the winners. Sometimes questions are read aloud, sometimes the teams write them down. Sometimes players mark their own answers and the quizmaster just checks that they didn’t make a mistake. Cheating is not allowed. You should answer the questions with your own knowledge, quickly Googling an answer on your phone may disqualify you (and it’s just no fun).

Finding a pub quiz couldn’t be easier. Just go to your local pub and ask when their quiz night is. Most pubs will announce it on a sign outside. If this bar doesn’t have quiz night, just ask the next closest bar.

But my English isn’t good/I don’t know anything about the UK/I don’t have any friends here….

A pub quiz is a fun way to meet people and make friends. If you don’t have a team, the staff will find one for you and you’ll talk to them as you play, probably leaving with some new Facebook friends. A lot of people are regulars, so you can meet them every week. If your English isn’t good or you have no idea who stars in Eastenders (or what Eastenders is), you can still play. You don’t have to be Shakespearean or have a masters degree in British culture, all you need is to want to have fun. Have you ever taken a pub quiz? Tell us about your experience in the comments.

Here we are. Stuck behind our desks. It’s been a while since we laughed with our colleagues. Let’s bring that back with an online pub quiz. Yes, create your own, and while we’re doing that, we’re making it a little easier with Office 365.

First off, this tutorial doesn’t give you the rules or the questions. That’s up to you. But we will show you how to do it without any problems. Especially if you’re hosting the pub quiz because that’s the time when you want to have fun and not bother with the tech.

Let’s skip the obvious web service Kahoot. This is also a great tool, but it has limitations in design and/or cost. We work with Office 365 Teams, PowerPoint, OneDrive and Forms to create a great experience. Both for you and for your users!

Step 1: Create a team. Let’s call it “Pubquiz” to make it easier. Use the General channel to discuss any pub quiz-related topic (e.g. What’s the topic of the next pub quiz?). Create a channel for each date you organize a pub quiz. This makes it a little easier to plan your events and group the conversations for each event. As a result, we have created a long-term team that can always go on and is not dependent on a particular owner. Users will also have the same experience every time. Bonus tip: As you can see in the image below, we used the naming convention for the channel name: “[Date] Pub Quiz Topic”.

Use the calendar in Teams to schedule your pub quiz for a specific channel. This will help you get the meeting started even if you’re a bit late yourself.

Don’t forget the highlighted step where you can add the meeting to a specific channel.

Step 2: Create your own quiz. We will use PowerPoint to present the questions during the teams meeting. Of course, you can also use Sway, but let’s stick with good old PPTX for now.

To look good? Did you know I just used the awesome “Design Ideas” from PowerPoint? Whenever you add an image to a slide, go to the “Design” tab and on the far right you will find “Design Ideas”. So you always have a head start for your slides. I just added the score (in red) for each round and filled out the template. Actual numbers are calculated in Forms.

The black foils are designed a bit more individually. Sometimes I had to add a little animation or I couldn’t match my possible answers to the template. So I went back to classic black. This also helps users focus on the question.

Regarding the images: I mostly used the option in PowerPoint to insert “images from an online source”. Yes, this uses Bing, but it will help you find images that comply with the Creative Commons guidelines. which is a cool thing. (I may not have used this feature on all the images you see here).

Remember to write down all questions and answers. We need to use this in the next step. Tip: Don’t forget to save your slidedeck to your personal OneDrive. If you saved it to Teams, all users could see your questions before the quiz even started.

Step 3: Create the response form. First we started with Excel, but that’s tedious to collect all the answers and check for errors. So why not use forms? It has everything you need for a pub quiz. Since this might be fairly new, I’ll go into more detail here.

On the Forms home page, make sure to create a new quiz. This has many more features that will help you when actually hosting the pub quiz.

You will first get an empty form. Give it a title, add a little description and choose a topic. You can also add your own background here to personalize the quiz. If you customize the title of your form and click “Subject” you will see that “Design Ideas” will appear to help you further design this form. Pretty cool (even if it fails sometimes).

Next some questions will be added. In the example above, I simply added a question that requires the user to select the correct answer. Two things to note: you can choose the correct answer and add the number of points a user can score. This will help you automate the scoring at the end of the pub quiz. So make sure to add those as well. Otherwise you would have to check all the forms. You don’t want that when everyone else is having fun.

In the figure above you can see the three types that you will most likely use in a pub quiz. Two things that stand out. Let’s start with “section”. In a pub quiz, it is important that users cannot skip the possible questions. And while this isn’t a watertight solution, make sure you use sections. If you don’t use these, the entire form will be displayed at once. So make sure you break the questions into sections as needed. You can also set all questions to Required to further frustrate users into moving to the next section. And make sure the questions aren’t exactly the same as in PowerPoint. If you do this, all users will have a good guess of the required answer. If you’re not sure, just use “Question 3” (etc.). In the screenshot below, you can see a question that couldn’t be answered without the accompanying PowerPoint because you’re being shown the correct image.

The second thing to notice is the “Text” response.

As you can see in the screenshot above, even for text answers, you can add the points a contestant can win. And more importantly, you can add multiple correct answers. This way, you can ensure that multiple correct answers with different spellings can be automatically scored by forms instead of doing manual scoring.

Disadvantage: It is not possible to have a tabular response for text fields. You can have a “choice box” table style, but that might not be useful for all types of questions. In this case I added all the questions one below the other. Works, but could have been better 😉

Bonus tip: Check the form’s settings before using it. You definitely don’t want to display the results automatically. And maybe you don’t want people to be able to add multiple entries.

Step 4: Host the event. Now it’s time to have fun. Start Teams and join the meeting you created earlier. Grab a drink and take control of the meeting. Share the form you created in a message within the meeting. This ensures that the form opens in a new browser tab and users can still use the Teams meeting in full screen mode.

Share your desktop and let your magic work by presenting the pub quiz with a little pazzaz! Give users just enough time to answer the questions and move from question to question. Don’t forget to toast after each round!

Step 5: Check the results. Everyone filled out their form and mailed it to you. It’s time to check some answers.

When you open your form, you will see the All Responses tab. In this case a single answer.

On this page you have two important options: “Review answers” and “Post results”.

You can also use the rest of the form. It will help you present the results to the users. This is of course mandatory, because your users want to know how well they did compared to the others.

review answers

As you can see in this image, you can search the results of any user. This user completed the quiz in 1 minute and 47 seconds. But more importantly, he scored 23 out of 45 points.

Directly below you can scroll through the individual questions. You can’t go wrong with multiple choice questions like this one. But don’t forget that there are always users who make unintentional mistakes when they need to use a text box. And your possible answers may not be enough. Be merciful and fix her score. You can easily do that from this page!

post results

Once you’re ready to announce the winners, you can use the results page to enrich your story and share fun facts about each question. But of course everyone is waiting for the winner. You can see your overall results on the Post Results page

That’s a nice touch for a pub quiz. Once you have named all the winners, you have the option to post the results (simply select all users and click the button in the top right corner). All users can review their own form and see exactly which questions they got right/wrong.

Bonus tip: You can even add feedback for the user. You can add feedback for each user to any question, but you can also add general feedback. E.g. In more professional settings, this can help students better understand why their answer was wrong.

final

We’re all done. You’ve successfully presented your pub quiz in a live Teams meeting and it just needed a little preparation. want more? Why not share the result page in the appropriate channel in a new tab. Want more? Why not use Power BI to get the results of all pub quizzes and cool stats and who is the winner of 2020? want more? Now it’s your turn to jump into the action with this 6-step beginner’s guide to hosting bar trivia…

Step 1) Successful trivia in bars depends on answering 2 critical questions!

The first step is to align your trivia event with your business goals. To maximize the ROI of little things in bars like yours, answer these questions first:

Question 1: Which day and part of the day requires TLC?

Since trivia in bars has been shown to increase sales and foot traffic, first determine when you need that nice business boost. Spoiler Alert! You don’t have to host a bar quiz “night.” If your Saturday lunchtime needs some TLC, try a laid-back trivia brunch or lunchtime event. Happy hour trivia in bars is always a win too…

Question 2: Are there any competing bar trivia events?

Do some quick competitive research on other odds and ends at nearby bars. Use Facebook Events and Eventbrite.com to explore the scene and adjust as needed. When a competitor is already hosting pub trivia on Tuesdays? Opt for Wednesday instead.

Step 2) Select a Bar Trivia format

When planning a trivia event, the next step is to choose a platform to run the game on. No, it’s not just trivia with pen and paper anymore! Before we look at the 3 most popular formats to choose from, here’s a quick overview of the game itself:

1) People form teams of up to 4-6 players.

2) Most Bar Trivia is held in a series of about 5 “rounds” each containing 5-7 questions per round.

3) To keep the audience happy, there is often scoring after each round and the host announces the ranking.

4) After the last round there may be a tie breaker question if needed. Then the trivia champion is crowned

Now back to the bar trivia formats. Here are your options!

pen and paper

Traditional trivia in bars follows the “old school” method, with a host reading questions and patrons answering on sheets of paper. Yes, this means scoring bar trivia is also done by hand (or using an Excel spreadsheet) each round – which can slow down gameplay. Some quiz hosts can display the questions on the venue televisions via a laptop PowerPoint display. Check out this helpful guide to hosting DIY trivia if you’re going down the pen-and-paper route.

tablet based

Thousands of bars add a tech-advanced twist to quiz night with handheld tablets. The main advantage is that the answers are sent to the host via the tablet, so the evaluation is instant and automatic. Trivia players at bars using tablets love that the gameplay moves faster. They spend more time socializing at the table than mailing answer sheets to the host. Rankings, questions and answers are displayed on both tablets and TVs. Plus, hosts enjoy not having to yell about the guests’ socializing! Another plus of the tablet-based bar trivia is that it makes it easy for your own staff to host the event. You don’t need to bring in an external host.

Smartphone based

The latest breed of trivia in bars turns a guest’s smartphone into a rating device. Again, you could host the bar event yourself or hire a host. It depends on you!

Step 3) Decide on a host and question source

Now that you know when your event will be held and what type of bar trivia format you will be using, the third step is to choose a host and source for questions. Again, you have 3 options to choose from:

$0: Host it yourself, write the questions yourself

If you want to save some money, you can go 100% DIY. First, choose a host for a bar trivia event from among your staff. You should be confident, charismatic and know how to work the space. Then you have to write a question… Do you have 8 hours? That’s what Quiz Runners company claims to do for researching and writing questions for bar trivia (and for one event only!)! If you’re still interested in this method, here are 25 Sources of Reliable Trivia Facts.

$$$: Professional bar trivia host and questions

Trivia in Bars can also be run entirely by an outside company. You simply provide the venue (and usually the prices). Prepare to cough up some serious money: Professional trivia hosts can charge up to $500 per event. Do your research before hiring a host. Go to trivia in bars hosted by the company you want to hire. Then use these 23 questions to interview potential hosts.

$-$$ Somewhere in the middle: host it yourself, use professional questions

When it comes to trivia in bars, this is becoming the most sought-after option. Bars use a staff member as a host but subscribe to a trivia network like Buzztime. Companies like Buzztime offer everything from questions and answers (from a database of over 700,000 questions, new ones are added daily) to rating systems. By having your own host bar trivia for employees, they have the opportunity to connect with guests — instead of an outside host.

Step 4) Determine the topic

The fourth step for hosting trivia in bars is to choose a theme. You want to exercise caution! The more general the questions, the better. Beware of themed trivia questions that few people will attract – like Harry Potter Trivia Night. Also, for best results, be sure to host your bar trivia night regularly, and there’s no limit on general trivia questions!

However, it’s a great idea to come up with a clever name or overall theme for your bar trivia event. Be inspired by these ideas:

#TacoTriviaTuesday

Some little things in bars are based on popular hashtags. Host Bar Trivia on Tuesdays—serving an a la carte taco menu and pitchers of margaritas or Corona. Other popular weekday hashtags include: #MondayMotivation, #WhiskeyWednesday, #WisdomWednesday, #WineWednesday, #ThrowbackThursday (throw back a few beers and throw down trivia… yes please)!

Battle of charities or corporations

Host an ongoing tournament that pits charities or local businesses in Bartrivia against each other.

Holiday trivia

Remember, you don’t have to limit the questions to a specific holiday. However, you can get themed with bar trivia by hosting a costume contest during a trivia night near Halloween, or by hosting a couples bar trivia around Valentine’s Day. Step 5) Set up (really) good prices

Now that you’ve set your theme, you need to plan pricing. The most successful trivia in bars always comes with great prizes. Use these prize ideas for your next bar trivia event, from a bar tab for the winning team to Instagram-worthy trophies.

Take a cue from wrestlers A (fake) gold championship belt may seem gimmicky… and that’s the point! Winners will take lots of photos and brag about their “hardware” on social media. You can also try a giant gold trivia locket necklace or trophy. Treat it like the Stanley Cup. The winning team gets to keep it for a week but must come back to fight for the rights to keep it!

Sponsored Prizes Another option when planning trivia prizes at bars is to look for prizes sponsored by local businesses, such as gift cards or products. The company would “donate” the gift card, and in return, your bar trivia host would talk about the business throughout the event. You may also want to include the sponsoring company’s logo in any digital, social, or print Bar Trivia Night promotions.

Hand out $2-$5 coupons to all attendees to reward them for attending bar trivia — and invite them back. It’s also a great way to build loyalty and prevent players from participating in other trivia at nearby bars.

Step 6) Write an event plan

The very last step for hosting trivia in bars is to tie everything together! You need to write an event plan to get organized, track results, and of course – set a budget. This is what you want to include:

This includes everything from a floor plan to tracking RSVPs. Use these thought starters to prepare your list:

Let’s talk numbers: First, you should decide how much you want to spend on each bar trivia event. Factor in the cost of a host (if you’re hiring one), trivia questions at bars, and of course marketing the event.

Quiz in a pub or bar

A pub quiz team in Amsterdam

A pub quiz is a quiz that takes place in a pub or bar. These events are also known as quiz nights,[1] trivia nights[2] or bar trivia[3] and may be held in other settings. Pub quizzes can attract customers to a pub who might not be there on other days. Pub Quiz is a modern example of a pub game. Although different pub quizzes can cover a range of formats and topics, they have a lot in common. The pub quiz was introduced to Britain in the 1970s by Burns and Porter and became part of British culture.[4] The Great British Pub Quiz Challenge is an annual event.[4] Pub quizzes are a staple in Irish pubs, where they are usually held in English.

history [edit]

The pub quiz was started in the UK in the 1970s primarily by a company called Burns and Porter to get people into pubs on quieter nights. The popularity grew and grew over the next few years from just 30 teams to 10,000 taking part in a Burns and Porter quiz each week.[4]

format [edit]

Pub quizzes (also known as live trivia or table quizzes) are often weekly events and have an announced start time, mostly in the evening.

While specific formats vary, most pub quizzes involve written answers to questions that are distributed in writing or announced by a quizmaster.

One format for the quiz is called “Infinite Bounce”. This format is generally used when the number of teams in the quiz is large – typically around 8-10. Each question is directed to the team following the team that answered the previous question. If no team answers the question, the next question is directed to the team following the team that addressed the previous question.

Generally, someone (either one of the bar staff or the person running the quiz) will come by with pens and quiz papers, which may contain questions or are just blank sheets for writing down the answers. A mixture of both is usual, whereby often only the blank sheet has to be submitted. Usually a team gives their answers to the quizmaster or the next team for correction.

Team[edit]

It’s up to the quizzers to form teams, which are generally table based. However, if there is a large group around a table, they may choose to split up. Some pubs insist on a maximum team size (usually between six and ten). The team members decide on a team name, often a supposedly funny phrase or pun, which must be written on all submitted papers.

People often have to pay to attend – from around 50p to £5 per person. This is often pooled to provide prize money. Many pub quizzes do not require payment at all, as the event is simply a way of attracting paying customers to the venue, usually on the less busy nights of the week.

Questions [edit]

The person who asks the questions is called the quizmaster. Quizmasters also sometimes mark and score answers submitted by teams, although teams often mark each other’s answer sheets.

The questions can be asked by the bar staff or the landlord, taken from a quiz book, purchased from a specialist trivia company, or asked by volunteers from among the attendees. In the latter case, the quiz setter can be rewarded with drinks or a small amount of money.

Questions are often drawn from the realm of “everybody knows” trivia, sometimes causing controversy when the answers are wrong or unverifiable. Furthermore, as the quiz questions are not formal matters, minor drafting errors can create confusion and led to a court case[5] in the UK in 2005.

rounds [edit]

There can be anywhere from one to more than half a dozen rounds of questions, totaling anywhere from 10 to over 80 questions. Rounds can include the following types (the most common first):

Factual rounds – these are usually spoken, either over a public address system or simply shouted out. Common topics are: General Knowledge – includes the topics listed below (if they are not in a separate round) and also includes topics such as history, geography and science and nature. There may well be more than one of these rounds. Sports – includes the stats and details of popular, well-known sports and general facts about others. Entertainment – Movies, TV shows and music (see also below). True or False – Questions to which the answer is true or false.

Image round – these use photocopied or computer printed handouts and consist of identifiable images such as: , famous places or objects depicted from a strange angle.

Who am I? – A series of clues as to the identity of a famous person (or thing). Hints are given in order of decreasing difficulty. The sooner a team finds the right answer, the more points it gets.

Music Round – these consist of excerpts (often just the intro or other non-vocal segments) of songs played over the PA system. Usually teams need to identify the song and also the singer or band (sometimes the year the song was released is also needed). Variations include recording movie soundtracks and TV theme tunes (requires title) and/or classical music (requires composer as well). Some venues cannot play a music round because they do not have the appropriate license from artists’ rights organizations.

Audio Round – similar to Music Rounds, but it plays sound clips from movies, TV shows, YouTube videos, etc.

Riddles – usually on a handout sheet. These can consist of crosswords, anagrams, ditloids, dingbats and basic math problems.

Novelty Rounds – topics centered around a specific word or name (e.g. all questions relate to a famous Norman); “Links”, where the last answer in the round provides a link to all previous answers; right or wrong; and various others to break up the general flow of questions.

Bonus rounds [ edit ]

Some quizzes allow teams to select a round or two as “wild cards” in which their points are doubled (or otherwise multiplied). Teams usually choose their wildcard rounds before the quiz begins, although some rounds may be excluded. Teams that believe they are particularly strong on certain topics can improve their odds with a good joker round, but risk wasting the joker if the questions are unexpectedly difficult. The idea of using a wild card in a game may have come from the BBC TV show It’s a Knockout.

Some quizzes contain a bonus question that requires a single answer, with one or more clues given in each round, making the answer progressively easier to solve. In some variants, the first team to provide the correct answer wins either a point prize or additional points to their total score. In others, the questions continue until all teams have the correct answer, with each team receiving less and less additional points the longer it takes to submit the correct answer.

Jackpots[ edit ]

Some quizzes add a small, separate question round at the end of a regular quiz, with a chance to win a jackpot. An amount of money is added to the jackpot each week, and if neither team answers the questions correctly, the money moves on to the next quiz. The maximum jackpot size may be limited by local gambling regulations.

Cash jackpots can be won through a variety of methods, including one-off questions and dance-offs.

tag [ edit ]

In some cases, the papers are marked by the bar staff. Alternatively, teams may need to mark their own answers and the paperwork submitted will only be used to verify that the prize contenders have not cheated by altering their answers. Another method is to have the teams exchange papers before grading, although this can be divisive.

One or two points are awarded for each correct answer; Some quizzes allow half marks for “almost correct” answers (e.g., a celebrity’s last name when their full name was required). In some quizzes, certain questions score higher, especially if they are unusually difficult.

cheating [edit]

With the mass use of cell phones and mobile internet access, cheating has become a problem for some pub quizzes, with covert calls and texts in the toilets, brought-in newspapers and magazines, ringing the bell and so on. Although a maximum number of members set for teams can help prevent large numbers of people from collaborating, groups masquerading as several distinct teams are quite common. Some quizzes now ban cell phone use and suspend the score of a team found to be cheating. Although more common where large sums of money are at stake, cheating can be observed even at relatively low stakes.

Also, some quizzes now disallow re-entering the pub after the quiz has started to prevent teammates from using public internet stations, public phones, and mobile devices out of the quizmaster’s line of sight. Generally, however, a pub runs its quiz alongside its normal operations, making such a measure impractical.

Prices [edit]

Prizes are awarded to the team with the highest score and often to the runner-up. Prices are usually one of the following:

Alcoholic Beverages: A case of beer or some money on a cash register to spend at this pub is common.

Cash: If money was required to take the quiz, this is often combined into one prize money. This can all go to the winning team. Alternatively, there may be a separate short series of questions or even a single “jackpot” question to win the money; If neither team gets the correct answer, the money is usually carried over, earning a bigger prize the next week.

Coupons: such as cinema discount coupons, meal discounts, or even drink coupons to use at the bar where the quiz is taking place.

Beverage-related promotional items from a brewery, such as t-shirts and beer glasses, promoting their products.

miscellaneous or novelty prizes such as chocolate or cheap toys. The winning team may receive first choice to select a prize from a range of offers.

technology [edit]

Wireless handheld devices replace traditional pen and paper in a digital pub quiz. A computer receives and records the answers from each team’s handsets, and the results are exported to a spreadsheet at the end of the quiz. A time limit can be set for each question (e.g. 60 seconds) and it can be determined which team answers the fastest to earn point prizes and tiebreaks.

Commercial projects[edit]

As the pub quiz concept spread across the US in the 1990s, several companies formed to provide services to bars and restaurants that organize quizzes.[6] Unlike the quiz league in the UK, commercial pub quizzes in the US typically involve more than just two teams and can have up to 25-35 teams[7] playing at a single venue with up to 6 people per team. [8th] Quiz companies charge bars for taking the quiz, which can range from $80 per week[9] to $175 or more, depending on the number of participants.[10] There are currently at least 20 different pub quiz companies in the US, with most corporate events concentrated in the major metropolitan areas.[11]

Leagues and competitions[ edit ]

A quiz league is an organization that runs quizzes, usually in pubs, although such competitions differ from the standard pub quiz as they usually involve two teams and often involve a series of individual questions. Normally no prizes are awarded at such a league game, but prizes and kudos may go to the quiz team that wins a league or knockout competition. The National Trivia Association holds a nationwide competition of different pub trivia games played in the United States.

Teams from an entire region, county, state or country meet annually for more prestigious competitions with higher prizes. Representative teams can either be the best team from each pub or a team selected from among the best individuals.

Believe it or not quiz events in New Zealand have held an annual Champion of Champions quiz in Auckland since 1999. Originally open to teams from Greater Auckland pubs, it is now open to teams from across New Zealand. In practice, travel costs prevent most teams from the lower North Island and South Island from participating, although Christchurch, Nelson and Wellington all provided teams.

The Australasian Pub Quiz Championships have been held annually since 2018. Open to teams from pubs and clubs across Australia and New Zealand, the 2018 Championships will be held simultaneously in Sydney, Canberra and Wellington at the end of April.

In the United States, the National Trivia Association presents The Riddle, a finals event open to eligible teams playing the official NTA Quizzo! Live trivia game. About a thousand players attended the 2008 event in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Sporcle operates the Pub Champions Trivia League which hosts regional, state and national tournaments.[12]

world record[edit]

The largest pub quiz according to the Guinness Book of World Records was the ‘Quiz for Life’ which took place on December 11, 2010 at the Flanders Expo Halls in Ghent, Belgium with 2,280 participants. The annual “World Famous Pub Quiz” in Birmingham in August 2016 had around 2700 participants in 260 teams.[13]

In popular culture[edit]

Regional [edit]

United States[edit]

In Philadelphia, many bars, particularly those owned by Irish Americans, will have “quizzo” nights.[14]

Quiz nights are sometimes used as fundraisers for non-profit organizations, and these are very common in the St. Louis area.[15]
