To be in an article of clothing also means to be wearing it, but the person is inside the clothing. With on, the clothing is on the outside of the person.

What does it mean when someone says that someone is being worn by their clothes?

Wearing a garment means wearing it.

This pattern

The {person} with a {clothing} on

can be understood as

The {person} with a {clothing} on {the person}

So you can see that the preposition in there wouldn’t work:

The {person} with a {clothing} in {the person} The girl with a red dress in [her] ungrammatical The girl with a red dress on [her] OK

Being in a garment also means wearing it, but the person is in the garment. With on, the clothes are on the outside of the person. It’s just a matter of how you imagine clothing: are we in it or is it up to us?

How do you reply to a nice dress?

We usually accept compliments gladly. You might answer “thanks. that is so kind” or something similar like (regarding a dress) “thank you. i got it as a present”.

What does it mean when someone says that someone is being worn by their clothes?

Growing up, I had to learn how to graciously accept a compliment. If someone said something was pretty or good, or something I’d done was commendable, I would open up and admit the flaw in it – things like, “Oh, that old thing? I was about to put it in the goodwill bag and thought I’d wear it one last time.” … “My essay was fine, but I think it was awkward from the third paragraph, and I really didn’t know how to end it.”

My father’s first language was not English and he grew up in an intolerant time for non-English speaking children. Because of this, he was thought stupid by the other students and started believing it himself. I can see where my self-deprecating habits might stem from receiving a compliment. My mother was a farm girl from the Midwest. People in their culture just didn’t say nice things like compliments to each other – if you got a compliment, you might get too high and cocky.

Interestingly, I was told by someone other than family, “Thank you!” was the gracious way of accepting a compliment. I find this thread very interesting because it could be considered an insultingly haughty response (to say “thank you!” in the US) in the US, where it’s then a good courtesy to decline the compliment and return something nice to the to say to another person.

Although you’re already feeling stressed, you’re really good at not showing it on the outside so you can focus on what needs to be done instead. I think it’s a good lesson in effective prioritization. It’s inspiring to see you so attuned to your feelings. It can be difficult to just acknowledge feelings, but somehow you do it so well. I was able to learn a lot from you on how to resolve emotional conflicts. I find it amazing that you can tell if your friends are bothering you just by the way they answer your call. Not only does it show how well you know her, but also how considerate you are of her feelings. Did you know that every time you take your first sip of coffee, you close your eyes and put on that little smile? I think it’s cute – both your smile and how you enjoy the little things. I find it amazing how you can allow yourself to feel whatever you’re feeling one day and then shake it off the next. You’re so good at finding the balance between wallowing and waking up. I think this is a healthy way to process your feelings and it makes me find you braver and stronger. You appreciate it when you’re proven wrong. It’s such a rare quality and I think it’s really admirable. Other people would go to great lengths to insist that they are right, but you are open to being challenged. On the one hand, this speaks for self-confidence, but on the other hand it also shows humility and openness to learn new things. I’m impressed how you keep asking about other people’s likes and opinions on a topic. You do a really good job of making sure everyone feels included, whether it’s choosing what to have for the team lunch or choosing a strategy for work. To me, that is a real sign of a good leader. You treat the service people so nice all the time that I really think you are doing it sincerely. I think it’s a quality that everyone should have – not being judgmental and appreciating other people’s service.

Your time management skills are amazing. They know how to calculate how long an activity should last and what should come next. Even when push comes to shove, you can make the most of your remaining time right up to the last minute. I wish I could have that ability to stay that calm and focused even in times of crisis. I love that you take Me Time seriously. Whether you’re traveling alone, spending the day at the spa, or staying home with a good book, you can take care of yourself. And I love the feeling of balance you get from it. I love that you love your heels but also that you have a pair of flats in your bag. I find it clever and practical. I also love how you make sure you never miss a step in your style. It’s amazing that in such a small bag you have practically everything you could ever need for a night out. From makeup to emergency kits, snacks and even a sewing kit for accidental wardrobe malfunctions, I can’t believe you somehow manage to fit them all in there. It’s almost like magic. I admire how you never speak badly of anyone. Even if it’s about someone you don’t particularly like. You are truly living the precious life lesson: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it.” I think that’s nice of you. You return your shopping cart to the correct place in the parking lot. It’s not a big deal to other people, but to me it says a lot about how considerate you are of others — and also how organized you really are. I love it when you give me great advice. I also think it’s great that you’re such a great listener. However, sometimes it’s best if you leave us alone and say nothing at all. You let me feel my emotions and I love how you are right there next to me to feel through everything when it gets confusing. You’re awesome because you don’t think twice about ordering pizza instead of pushing for a fancy dinner on date nights. Sometimes the logistics and schedule just can’t work out, but it’s great that you’re in the mood for something more casual. What matters most to you is that we spend quality time and I love that. It’s fun and amusing how you have makeup supplies in your monthly budget, but honestly I think it’s great that you’re able to take financial responsibility. As long as you don’t drop the ball on your other needs, you should be able to enjoy what you love as much as you want. Your budgeting skills are something to strive for. I love how you can stand up for yourself in arguments and not let others run over you, but I would also be the first to apologize if you realize you were wrong. You are very aware of your worth and worth but at the same time you don’t let your ego get in the way of humility when you need it. I love it when you’re comfortable with your looks, whether it’s because of a good hair day or because you like your new dress. It brings out the glow in you and the confidence shines through. Your laughter is so heartfelt and contagious; I can’t help but laugh with you. It’s such a serotonin boost, a happy pill, a dose of sunshine. I would like to hear you laugh all the time. you brighten my day You know how to take a joke, even if you’re sometimes the center of attention. You can laugh at yourself without letting others or yourself bring you down. I think that’s a real testament to how well you know yourself and that you’re sure of it. I see how much you care for your family and I find that really endearing. Even if things aren’t always perfect, it’s still great that you make sure you’re spending and enjoying quality time with them. They inspire me to try harder and do better with my own family relationships. You are confident in yourself but not afraid to ask for help when you need it. This is not a sign of weakness; this is a sign of strength and maturity. Your approach to problem solving is ambitious. I’m also inspired to work on recognizing when I need to ask for myself instead of trying to solve things all by myself.

Why do people like wearing dresses?

They are easy to pack since it’s just one piece of clothing. And, most of my dresses don’t wrinkle easily. I can get away with eating as much food without having to look bloated (tight dresses are not my jam). For some reason I often get more compliments when I wear a dress.

Dresses, dresses, dresses! My must-have favorite fashion basic. I wear athleisure most of the time when I’m working from home, but when I go out I rarely wear pants. I just love dresses.

I wear dresses every season. In autumn and winter I wear them with tights and boots. In spring and summer I wear them with Tory Burch sandals. This is my uniform.

And it’s so easy to travel with elegant outfits. I can fit so many clothes in one suitcase (I’m addicted to hair and skin care products so I need to save space for all the products there).

For me, wearing dresses keeps things simple… You don’t have to worry about which top to tuck into which pants and what heel height goes with those pants, and then we can’t forget to tie the belt to the shoes and bag to adjust. Your biggest concern with a dress is packing the accompanying shoes and bag.

Done and done.

Is dress only for woman?

A dress, singular, is a long skirted article of clothing that conventionally is worn by women and not by men (but, you know, it’s the 21st century). An image search for “dress” should give you the general idea. Just to confuse matters, a “dress shirt” is an article of men’s clothing.

What does it mean when someone says that someone is being worn by their clothes?

“Dress” can mean “attire” or “attire”, but it’s usually used in this abstract way and refers to clothing in general. It is not generally used to denote the specific outfit a person is wearing.

I would say “nice dress man!” to refer to a dress (singular noun) visible to you so that you can notice it, not to dress in general (no count noun). A dress, in the singular, is a long-skirted garment typically worn by women rather than men (but you know, we live in the 21st century). An image search for “dress” should give you an overview.

Just to confuse things, a “shirt” is a men’s garment. In the US it means pretty much any smart collared shirt, in the UK it means a more specific style of formal shirt that US Americans may refer to as a “tuxedo shirt”. I’m not sure because I’ve never been to an event in the US that called for it. “Dress Uniform” is the most formal military uniform, and I believe it can be shortened to “Dress”. The term “battledress” refers to standard battle dress uniforms, especially old-style ones. Not like you might expect with a Kevlar dress.

So you could say “nice shirt, man” or “nice dress [uniform], man” if the particular circumstances required it, and that would not mean women’s clothing.

What is difference between dress and wear?

Wear is transitive (it takes a direct object): I’m wearing a new dress. Dress is intransitive: She was dressed in a T-shirt and jeans.

What does it mean when someone says that someone is being worn by their clothes?

Good point. is of course passive. But is also used without an object in the active voice in statements such as “She dresses smartly”, “He usually dressed for dinner”, “The child dressed quickly so as not to be late for school”.

How To Compliment Someone’s Outfit Without Saying It Looks “Flattering”

When it comes to commenting on other people’s outfits, the word “flattering” is arguably one of the most commonly used descriptions. Finding clothes that flatter your body has become the ultimate goal, especially according to traditional media. But usually when we say flattering, we mean “this outfit makes you look smaller and/or more hourglass shaped.” As such, its use as a compliment, whether we like it or not, has evolved into an implication that the best a piece of clothing can do is give the illusion that you’re thinner than you actually are. And that’s just not okay. If you’re looking for tips on how to compliment a girl on her dress, how to compliment a man on his dressing, or anyone else, there are better words than flattery.

There are several problems with the term flattering. For one, it implies that thinner is always better. It also implies that everyone should and wants to be thinner – something that is obviously not true. So it pays to find new ways to complement your best friend’s outfit that don’t involve that term. Even if you figure out how to compliment a well-dressed man, leave out the word flattering.

Inspired by the grassroots body positivity movement, the word “flattering” has been removed from Bustle’s content since 2014 – and in January 2018 it became official: none of BDG Media’s websites will ever use the word “flattering” in reference to use appearance in editorial content.

If you’re looking for more creative ways to tell your boyfriend that you love his outfit, here are 21 compliments that get the message across without implying that the goal of dressing should always be to shape your body to a certain point way to make it look .

Ashley Batz/Hustle

“You look so confident/happy/glowing.”

When in doubt, focus on how your friend is feeling rather than how he looks. After all, clothes should make us feel good.

“I love this so much I’ll take it when you’re not looking.”

Is there a greater compliment than telling someone you would do anything to get that outfit in their closet?

“This outfit looks like something Rihanna would wear.”

Or Sophie Turner, or Zendaya, or Gabi Gregg, or whoever your style icon is.

“Who needs a little black dress when you’ve got this?!”

The go-anywhere must-have has been dethroned.

“I’ve never seen anyone look so ready to own it.”

According to science, the clothes you wear can affect your confidence. Let your girlfriend know that she’s mastered the art of creating a look that will banish all self-doubt.

“How do you always come up with such great outfits?”

A little skilful complimenting can go a long way.

Ashley Batz/Hustle

“I love the fact that I’ve never seen anything like that about you!”

If you know the look is an adventurous style choice for your girlfriend, don’t be afraid to call her out for a job well done.

“You always inspire me to try new things with my clothes.”

The nicest compliment? One that shows how you have inspired other people.

“Your style is everything.”

Everyone. Thing. Instead of just focusing on one element, make it a personal style comment.

“This color looks great on you!”

It doesn’t matter what the item is, it’s the standout shade that matters most.

“Every time I see one of your outfits, I’m like, ‘She’s the shit.'”

Let your friend know how cool you think they are.

“Excuse me miss, are you famous?”

Nothing like a case of mistaken identity to get you excited about your outfit.

Ashley Batz/Hustle

“I can tell you love what you wear!”

A great outfit can make you feel like you have a million bucks — and that’s something to celebrate.

“You are absolutely glowing!”

It may have something to do with what you’re wearing, but you look amazing.

“We have to come up with something special just for you to wear this outfit while we do it.”

Again: celebrate! And festive clothing is more popular than ever.

“I’ve been looking for that everywhere.”

Not only do I love what you’re wearing, but it’s actually something I’ve been looking for myself!

“You are my fashion hero.”

Not all heroes wear capes – although these have been in fashion lately.

Ashley Batz/Hustle

“Wait, can I take a picture of your outfit? I want to remember it so I can recreate it later.”

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

“Have you ‘grammed’ your outfit yet?!”

If they say no, offer to take a picture.

“You look amazing!”

Sometimes simple is the best way.

“I saw this exact look in a magazine yesterday.”

Not only do you look stunning, but you are also very trendy.

“Everyone just turned to look at you as you walked through the door.”

Not only do your friends love what you’re wearing, even strangers have noticed how amazing you look!

“Tell me where you got every single thing you’re wearing right now. Don’t waste details.”

This complements her current outfit and her impeccable shopping habits.

Ashley Batz/Hustle

“The color of this dress is SO amazing.”

Show them you admire their ability to pick a piece that stands out.

“You can wear this anywhere.”

Not only does it look great, it’s also seamless.

“This outfit suits you so well.”

Despite their incredible wardrobe, they still wear their best looks.

“I never thought I’d bring those two parts together, but now I’ll do it all the time.”

A little plug of their creativity can go a long way.

“Where do you get your outfit inspiration from? I definitely have to follow the same people.”

Help them support other creative people too.

“Omg I just saw Gigi Hadid wearing this exact outfit on Instagram.”

Tag her favorite It Girl.

“Can we please go shopping together…right now?”

And when all other options have been exhausted, use this excellent outfit as an excuse to shop for more clothes.
