The First Time I Saw Her. Poem by David Kinyanjui
When I first saw her
even if it came from far away
She made me go gaga!
Not that I’m every Tom, Dick and Harry,
that I would hurry
jumping around like a pong ball
Call all darlings.
But when I first saw her
she conquered my heart.
There is nothing I could detest.
A lady so fine
it should not freeze and shine.
natural in attitude,
she let me sing alone.
OCD by Neil Hilborn The first time I saw her, …
obsessive compulsive disorder
by Neil Hilborn
When I first saw her
Everything in my head went still.
All the ticks, all the constantly updated images just disappeared.
When you have OCD, you don’t really have quiet moments.
Even in bed I think:
Did I lock the doors? Yes.
have i washed my hands Yes.
Did I lock the doors? Yes.
have i washed my hands Yes.
But when I saw her, all I could think about was the hairpin curve of her lips.
Or the eyelash on her cheek –
the eyelash on her cheek—
the lash on her cheek.
I knew I had to talk to her.
I asked her out six times in thirty seconds.
After the third she said yes but neither of them felt right so I had to move on.
On our first date, I spent more time sorting my food by color than eating it or talking to her.
But she loved it.
She loved that I had to kiss her goodbye sixteen or twenty-four times at different times of the day.
She loved that it took me forever to walk home because our sidewalk has a lot of cracks.
When we moved in together she said she felt safe like no one would ever rob us because I definitely lock the door eighteen times.
I always watched her mouth when she spoke –
when she spoke—
when she spoke—
when she spoke;
When she said she loved me, her mouth would curl up at the edges.
At night she lay in bed and watched me turn off all the lights.
And on and off and on and off and on and off and on and off and on and off.
She would close her eyes and imagine the days and nights passing before her.
But then.
She said I was taking up too much of her time.
That I couldn’t kiss her goodbye so much because I was late for work.
When she said she loved me her mouth was a straight line. When I stopped in front of a crack in the sidewalk, she just kept walking.
And last week she started sleeping with her mother.
She told me she shouldn’t have let me get so attached to her; that this whole thing was a mistake, but.
How can it be a mistake that I don’t have to wash my hands after touching them?
Love is not a mistake and it kills me that she can walk away and I just can’t.
I can’t go out and find someone new because I keep thinking about her.
Usually when I’m obsessing over things, I see germs creeping into my skin.
I find myself crushed by an endless line of cars.
And she was the first beauty I ever got stuck on.
I want to wake up every morning and think about how she’s holding her steering wheel.
The way she turns shower knobs like she’s opening a safe.
How she blows out candles –
blows out candles—
blows out candles—
blows out candles—
blows—
Now all I can think about is who else is kissing her.
I can’t breathe ’cause he only kisses her once –
He doesn’t care if it’s perfect!
I want her back so bad
I leave the door unlocked.
I leave the light on.
