5 Ways to Settle and Soothe a Windy, Relfux and Colicky Baby
Here at Bibble & Bubble we know how using yoga and relaxation and massage techniques can really help a baby suffering from colic and acid reflux. As a mother, I am well aware how difficult it can be to deal with a baby with colic and acid reflux as my eldest daughter suffered greatly when she was little and often filled my days with a sad mother and baby were. In our latest blog, we’ve provided a helpful demonstration of some moves and holds you can use at home to calm and soothe your baby.
Top Tip: The saying “African babies never cry” is something we could all learn from. As a mother married to a South African when I visit the family, watching the locals show you babies constantly lying in slings on their parents’ backs or on their sides is an instant comfort to the little ones and the thought that that If life were different, it wouldn’t be what they were used to. So if you find your little one calming down when held, a sling could be a hands-free way!
Hold & swing belly
Babies with colic and reflux like gentle pressure on their tummy and as a result often feel like you will never be able to put your baby down. One hold that often works well in our mixed-age classes is the basic abdominal hold.
This hold will bring your baby face forward and upright. Hold your arm across your baby’s chest, with your arm supporting his forearm and your other arm supporting his bottom, with your palm resting on your baby’s tummy with your fingers spread.
Babies need regular, gentle movements. Leaning your baby slightly forward in this position encourages the sense of going up and down stairs, that is, a little slow rise and fall.
Tiger in tree hold
A nice hold is also tiger in the tree as seen in the picture below and provides another nice stomach squeeze that is extremely relaxing for her.
rocking chair on foot
Rocking works very well to soothe babies and is a great technique to get them to sleep. Just take slow steps, mimic the rocking chair motion with your feet from heel to toe, and dip slightly as you complete each rocking step.
keyboard location
Another great technique is to place your baby across your legs and then swing your legs to encourage a regular, gentle up-and-down motion. You can also put a gentle regular rhythm on their backs like a keyboard.
Knee-chest pedals
This hip sequence, bringing the knees to the chest, is also very beneficial, but should be used as a preventive technique rather than when the baby is upset. Gently hold your baby’s calves and bring bent knees towards your tummy one at a time, like a pedaling motion that gently massages the lower abdomen. This movement aids digestion and helps relieve trapped wind.
Top Tip: As parents we have access to so much information but I think we should always remember that we are on our own journey and therefore we are babies and there is never one answer that fits all as we are all individuals.
As parents, relaxation techniques for ourselves and deep breathing can also encourage a baby to relax. It’s amazing how much of your state of mind is absorbed by your baby. This combination of techniques in our classes gives parents and babies techniques to deal with these common problems.
If you haven’t already, book a taster session at one of our classes using these and many more holds, sequences and techniques. We are happy to hear from them!
