Tinder has a pretty simple setup: swipe left to dislike someone and right to match them. It’s great for casual browsing, but it can also lead to awkward moments if you accidentally make a wrong choice.

Luckily, Tinder lets you unmatch anyone you match. You just have to open a chat with them.

Quick tip: You can use these steps to unmatch someone you’ve swiped directly on. If you accidentally swipe left on someone and want to see their profile again, you’ll need to subscribe to Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold, or Tinder Platinum and use the rewind feature.

How to unmatch someone on Tinder

If you matched someone – meaning you both swiped right at each other – you can unmatch them on the chat page.

1. Open Tinder and tap the chat icon on the bottom toolbar.

2. Tap the picture of the person you want to unmatch. If they don’t appear under Messages or New Matches, you can search for them.

What is Tinder?

Tinder is an online dating app that brings couples together based on their physical attraction. It alerts you to other Tinder users who fall within a certain age range, gender, and distance from your location, and lets you know if you have mutual friends.

You decide whether or not you like the way a person looks: if so, great; if you don’t, they will never know. If you’re both interested, Tinder’s messaging feature gives you a private chat thread where you can chat and get to know each other better.

How do I get Tinder?

Tinder is available as a free app for Android or iOS; Just download it from the App Store or Google Play.

What happens if I like someone and they don’t like me?

No need to hide your face from shame. The only way someone will know if you liked them on Tinder is if they like you too, then a match will be made and messaging between the two of you will go live. So set your goals as high as you want – nobody will ask you about it.

Will anyone know if I don’t like them?

Tinder features

prompts

One of the more recent additions to Tinder is Prompts. These are quick conversation starters that can be added directly to your profile – similar to what many older dating sites and few other dating apps use.

You can select a few prompts to add to your profile and write your own responses to argue matches with you in chat. They appear mixed with your photos on your profile, so people see your prompts when they swipe through your images.

To find prompts, tap the profile icon in the top-right corner of the app, then go to “Add Media” and “Text Prompt.” Tinder will also continue to add new prompts over time, so keep checking back for new options.

videos

For a while, Tinder allowed users to upload two-second “loops,” but now that has been replaced with the option to add longer videos to your Tinder profile — up to 15 seconds.

You can add up to nine videos located in your photos and prompts on your profile, and you can also upload them from the “Add Media” section of your profile settings.

You have the option to trim and crop your video while uploading it. So don’t worry if the video you want to use is a bit too long or needs cropping to fit well on a phone screen.

Great Likes and Boosts

Since Tinder’s launch, a few new features have been added to give hopeful singles more options. First up is “Super Likes” – you can give someone a Super Like by tapping the blue star icon or swiping up on their profile – as opposed to a normal attempt to find a match, they’ll get one instantly Notification sent that he has super likes and chance to see your profile.

It’s a more open way of trying to match someone, but be warned that some users may see it as a bit too posh. A free account also only allows you to use one Super Like per day, so use it wisely.

One of the other newer features is Boost. A single boost costs £3.89 so they’re not cheap, but you can get them at a discount by buying packs of five or ten. You can find the boosts by tapping on the purple lightning bolt icon.

Discover

Explore is a newer section of the Tinder app, only launching in 2021 — though it has some slightly older features. You can find it to the right of the main swipe tab on the bottom bar.

The Explore section gives you new ways to find matches beyond a simple swipe. It includes limited-time events like Vibes and Hot Takes – more on that below – but also ways to access more targeted queues of potential matches.

The first is by interest — you’ll see stacks of users based on terms like “foodie,” “thrill,” or “early bird,” giving you the option to only swipe through users who match specific interests or personalities.

You also have the option to only swipe through profiles that have passed photo verification in case you’re worried about being fished. You’ll still see all users in your main feed, but you can only cycle through verified users via Explore at any time. If you don’t see this option, it may be because you’re not yet verified yourself – so go ahead.

Another option is the music mode. This mode is only available to users who have enabled Tinder’s integration with Spotify. It plays people’s anthem – the song they chose to “define” them – automatically when you land on their profile, giving you an instant sense of your musical compatibility. However, you must have your own anthem selected for your profile if you want to browse the pages of others with music mode enabled.

vibrations

Only officially launched in 2021, Vibes is a silly name for a fairly simple feature: quizzes. From time to time users will receive a notification that a Vibes event has started in their space and you will also see it in the Explore feed. If you participate, you can answer a series of personality questions – all with a slightly goofy tone – but you only have 48 hours to do so.

If you choose Vibe, your replies will show up on your profile for the next 72 hours, and they’ll also show up in the chat window when you’re talking to someone else who attended, allowing you to start a quick and easy conversation starter.

Hot takes

Hot takes are pretty similar to vibes, but there are a few key differences. They are available worldwide for English-speaking users and are available in Explore between 18:00 and midnight every day.

If you participate, a Hot Take prompt popup will appear. Share your thoughts and you’ll be thrown into a chat with someone else who answered the same question – although they didn’t necessarily choose the same answer.

The catch is that chats are timed, so you’ll need to act fast to impress your chat partner and find out if you’re a match or they’re gone forever.

Face to face video chat

2020 brought a major innovation to Tinder: video chat. The new option, dubbed Face to Face, aims to offer a Covid-safe way to chat directly with new matches without ever leaving the Tinder app. Also, it offers some security features that you don’t get by going directly to WhatsApp.

First, like with matching, you both have to agree to enable video chat before it becomes an option. There’s a switch you can press once you’re comfortable video chatting with a particular game, and they won’t know when you pressed it. Once you have both activated, Face to Face will be unlocked. Oh, and you can always turn that switch off for those days when you know you don’t want to be in front of the camera.

At the beginning of each call, you will be required to agree to certain guidelines of conduct, and at the end of each call there will be an opportunity to review and report undesirable behavior. The app also requires you both to enable camera access, so don’t worry it’ll be one-sided.

Block your ex

Tinder has also added the option to avoid awkward encounters with your ex-boyfriends (or family and friends…) by blocking specific contacts based on their phone number.

To block someone, just go to your profile settings in the app and choose from your phone contacts which people you don’t want to see on the app – whether it’s ex-boyfriends who you don’t want to meet again, or friends and Family You would just be a bit embarrassing to see on a dating app.

Any contact you block will no longer show up as a potential match for you (or vice versa) as long as they’re logged into Tinder with the matching contact information. This works even if they aren’t currently Tinder members but will sign up in the future.

This is only in the UK, but there may be similar schemes elsewhere in the world. Tinder has temporarily added a “vaccination hub” to the app to promote vaccinations, allow users to show their vaccination status and access NHS vaccine information and resources.

You can add an interactive sticker to your profile to show that you are vaccinated – or will be vaccinated soon. If you do, Tinder will even give you a free super like.

Tinder on the Internet

Tinder might have been one of the first dating apps to steer people away from clunky websites, but things come full circle when Tinder itself jumps into your browser.

The company launched Tinder Online, a web-based version of the app designed to give people access to Tinder even if they don’t own a smartphone — or just don’t have access to one right now. Just go to Tinder.com and log into your account, and you can use all the normal Tinder features — including super likes, boosts, and rewind — chat with your matches and even edit your profile.

Best of all, there’s “Work Mode” – a button that displays a semi-convincing imitation of a Google Drive doc in case your manager picks just the wrong moment to walk past your desk.

Is Tinder Plus worth it?

If you’re serious about trying to use Tinder to make a match, you might want to consider investing in Tinder Plus. This is a premium paid tier that offers some benefits for a monthly fee.

Plus has some advantages: For one, it makes Tinder ad-free. It also gives you one free boost per month and five super likes per day instead of just one.

Exclusive Plus features include a “Rewind” button to redo your last swipe if you accidentally went the wrong way, and Tinder Passport to change your location – useful if You are planning a trip and want to meet up with a few people before you arrive.

Arguably the biggest benefit of Tinder Plus is that it removes the “right swipe limit.” Regular users can only click directly on so many users per day before having to wait 12 hours — a way of discouraging people from trying to match every profile they come across. There’s no fixed number of swipes you’re allowed to do, as it’s determined by an algorithm based on your typical behavior, but Tinder Plus users can swipe to their hearts’ content either way.

How much does Tinder Plus cost? Again, there is no easy answer. Prices are determined for each user by Tinder’s algorithm, with prices based in large part on your age: the younger you are, the cheaper the cost. It can reportedly range from just £1.49/$1.49 a month to £14.99/$14.99 a month – with discounts if you commit six months or a year in advance.

Is Tinder Gold worth it?

If Plus isn’t enough for you, Tinder has a second paid tier called Tinder Gold, which offers all the features of Tinder Plus plus two big additions: Likes You and Top Picks.

Likes You does what it sounds like – it lets you see who has already swiped directly at you, so you can pay special attention to the profiles of people you know before committing to swiping in return. You can see a full list of all the profiles you like so you can browse them and swipe both ways while knowing they’re interested in you.

Top Picks is a newer Gold feature that shows you a daily pick of profiles handpicked especially for you by Tinder’s algorithm. You’ll see a few tips every day (but they disappear after 24 hours), each with a highlight from their profile – things like “doctor” or “adventurer”. You can also pay extra to access additional picks each day.

Aside from those two big features, Gold also offers some more granular controls over who sees you and who sees you. You can use the default algorithm to select profiles or ask the app to prioritize accounts that have been active recently. In turn, you can also restrict your profile so that it doesn’t show your age or distance, and even restrict it so that only people you’ve already liked see your profile at all.

With Gold pricing, expect an extra £3.49/$4.99 per month on top of Tinder Plus, with discounts for longer commitments – and again with variations by age.

Is Tinder Platinum worth it?

For the really big donors, there’s an even higher tier: Tinder Platinum.

As you’d expect, this includes everything you get with Tinder Gold, but also two other features: Priority Likes and Message Before Match.

Priority Likes essentially guarantee that your Like will be seen before non-Platinum subscribers, which essentially puts you at the top of the stack for potential matches, meaning your profile is more likely to be seen.

Message Before Match is a major change for Tinder, allowing you to attach a short message — up to 140 characters — to your Super Likes. Not that you can still send super likes without a message, and that this only allows you to send the one message, not bombard someone with chat-up lines before they even like you.

In 2020, Tinder added several new security features to the app to make users feel comfortable using the app risk-free.

First off, accounts can now have their photos verified, with a blue tick appearing next to the user’s name if they are. Verification is optional and requires users to recreate a series of poses in new photos to prove who they are, with the “human-assisted AI” then verifying those photos against the photos in the user’s profile to match.

It won’t solve the problem of users who have changed a bit since their photos, but it should help reduce the risk of catfishing on the service.

More advanced ID verification is also rolling out globally after a trial in Japan. This includes comparing people’s photos and details to government-issued ID to provide additional assurance that they are who they say they are.

Tinder says ID verification will remain optional for now – acknowledging that verification can pose a real security risk for some marginalized communities – except for countries and regions that require it.

Depending on what country you’re in – it’s only in “select markets” – Tinder has also added a feature that tries to detect offensive messages. If you’ve received a system-flagged message, you’ll be asked if the message bothered you, and if so, the user will be reported.

Finally, in the US, Tinder has partnered with Noonlight to give Tinder users free access to the security app. You can access Noonlight from the same menu you use to attach GIFs or images to messages, but you’ll need to register and connect your accounts. Once you’ve done that, you can record any plans to meet a new partner in Tinder’s Noonlight.

If there is an emergency during the date, you open the separate Noonlight app and hold down a button to trigger the emergency. The app will ask for a PIN to clear the alert and will also try to call and text you and if there is no response the app will call emergency services. Users connected to Noonlight will also receive a Noonlight badge on their profile – hopefully a deterrent to anyone who would pose a threat.

Your profile becomes almost invisible, and it takes some time before you realize that something is actually wrong.

It’s basically a punishment… from Tinder for doing something wrong, you naughty one!

How do I know I’m shadowbanned?

The official Tinder does not talk about it. However, we all know…

You’ll get banned on Tinder if you experience in-app passivity, whether it’s not getting matches, not getting likes, or even not having enough profiles to swipe through…

Here’s how you can specifically tell if you’re banned on Tinder:

1. If not zero, you will get very few matches.

You got a lot of matches before, and suddenly you don’t get any more. (Or the ones you get are the “low quality” matches.)

That’s because your profile, Your Majesty, isn’t being shown to people. You are I-N-V-I-S-I-B-L-E.

2. You will not receive any messages back.

You see it while swiping those few profiles or when there are no more profiles to show.

It’s what gives you that little “glitch” feeling when using the app when you’re locked on Tinder.

Coupled with the low number of likes, matches, and profiles to swipe, this is definitely a big sign pointing to shadowban.

5. They [Tinder Gold subscribers] get zero (or some very few) likes.

You might be warned. Maybe you just get banned. You could get a shadowban.

Moral of the story, be nice.

How long does a Tinder shadowban last?

Word has gotten around about Tinder’s 3-month rule.

It is based on Tinder deleting your data from their system after 3 months of account deletion.

I’ve seen people wait 3 months because of this:

“…we are implementing a security retention window of three months after account deletion. During this period, the account information will be preserved, although of course the account will no longer be visible on the Services.”

This is also an account deletion. That means waiting three months won’t work unless you delete your current Tinder account.

In summary, a Tinder shadowban lasts until you completely delete your account.

That means you can’t get rid of a Tinder shadowban unless you open a brand new account (we’ll talk about that in detail later in this article).

That means it will last forever!

How do I remove Tinder Shadowban?

Tinder Shadowban doesn’t just go away.

I tried, I was there, I made it. Follow me.

Wait three months and think that Tinder will delete your data and will not remember that you will not work.

You must open a completely new account.

1. Get rid of your current Tinder account:

2. Uninstall Tinder.
