How to clean paving stones

Paving stones can transform any garden, patio or driveway into something more textured and organized, but unfortunately, paving stone cleaning methods are often considered too labor intensive. Believe it or not, it’s actually quite easy to keep your paver looking its best. You’ll need to take a two-pronged approach—killing weeds and removing debris from the slabs yourself—but both steps are remarkably simple, and you don’t have to go out and buy expensive products at the hardware store, either.

You may have heard a lot of people talk about how cleaning cobblestones with a pressure washer is a breeze – and it is – but is it really the best option? Yes, a pressure washer will remove dirt and moss covering your panels, but it might also remove the sand. When using a pressure washer, it is generally recommended that you tilt it at a 45 degree angle, which will ease some of the pressure on the sand. However, you can still expect a few inches of top sand to peel off. Whether you use a jet wash or not is entirely your decision. It is very effective and quick at removing dirt, but it will take longer to get your pavement looking good again as you will have to replace the loosened sand. To do this, apply a little more than you actually need, as you will find that some of the loose particles can disappear with wind or rain. Every few days for the next week, gently brush the sand into the grout until it settles enough to hold the panels firmly back in place.

When new weeds appear, you may be tempted to use a weed killer to get rid of them and prevent them from growing entirely through the joints. While you can do this (and weed killers are readily available at hardware stores), you may find it easier and less expensive to try to stop the weeds from growing in the first place.

Before you even think about how to clean sidewalk tiles, you should address the problem of weed growth. A lot of people think that weeds can actually grow through the pavers themselves, but that’s not true (unless you’re dealing with Japanese knotweed — this infamous weed can get anywhere). Instead, weeds grow through the sand gaps and can kick up the sand in the process, making your pavers prone to movement and tipping

Forget specialized products for cleaning paving stones — all you really need is some water and some kind of mild, gentle soap like dish soap or laundry detergent. Whether you use hot or cold water depends on your preferences and the type of soap you use. Both hot and cold water work equally well, but if you’re using powdered soap, hot water will dissolve the powder more thoroughly. Using a brush, gently scrub the panels with the soap solution and rinse with clean water.

However, you should be on the lookout for products that may damage pavers. Any soap that warns against use on limestone or marble should be avoided, and if you have concrete pavers acidic cleaners are not a good idea. You might think you need something strong to make a difference with pavers, but really, regular household soap can work just fine. Always test your solution on a small area of ​​your patch first to ensure there is no damage and wear rubber or gardening gloves to protect your hands.

Monoblock Moss Removal Cleaner A monoblock driveway should last for many years, be functional and look extremely attractive. Is BAC 50 really the best moss killer?

Yes.

I know because I’ve used it on roof tiles for several years to keep the moss from growing back after physically removing it with a brush/scraper.

These are lichens and are very difficult to remove, even powerful high-pressure cleaners do not always remove them.

The good news is that benzalkonium chloride will kill them, but it takes time to take effect.

How often should this chemical be applied?

I have found that the chemical needs to be reapplied every 3 years on north facing roofs and every 4-5 years on the sunny south side of the roof.

Reapply every two years for patios, driveways and other hard surfaces near ground level, or more frequently for shady, damp areas prone to excessive moss growth.

The feedback I have received from customers has been very, very positive.

Some of them asked me to come back and do their patios and driveways even though I was a roofer.

Decks and other flat surfaces where there is a risk of puddles of water may require reapplying more frequently. In the case of particularly stubborn moss, algae and lichen on such surfaces, I recommend applying twice in the first year and then once a year.

Here’s how to use this (and any other) moss killer product

Any surface showing excessive moss growth (see photos above) must first be manually removed as much as possible without damaging the surface.

You will then need to prepare the chemicals, so use gloves and goggles to be safe.

Due to the high concentration, you should be particularly careful. This is not a ready-to-use product, it is highly concentrated and may cause skin irritation.

In addition:

Do not use if rain is forecast within 24 hours.

Keep children and pets away from area until dry.

Do not use it in windy weather.

Clean hands thoroughly after use and avoid eating or drinking when using chemicals.

Do not allow chemical to enter drains or waterways.

This chemical, like all similar chemicals, is very strong in high concentrations but becomes inert after drying.

I’ve used a backpack sprayer for rooftop applications, but a watering can will do for a patio. The chemical is water soluble, making it easy to mix.

A dilution rate of 25-1 (25 parts water to 1 part chemical) would give a very strong product. A rate of 40-1 could be used for light algae growth.

This product is only suitable for hard surfaces such as roof tiles, patios, driveways and fence panels.

Test on an inconspicuous area first if you are concerned about discoloration.

This product should not be used on lawns or plants. For lawns, try this lawn moss killer instead.

Due to the high concentration, this product is best suited for large areas or stubborn moss, algae or lichen growth.

Will this moss killer remove lichen?

Lichens are organisms that grow on hard surfaces like tiles and patios.

It is very stubborn and difficult to remove. Even powerful high-pressure cleaners have trouble removing this growth.

These and other chemicals of similar strength will kill lichen, but it takes a while for the dead substance to come off the tile/patio.

Just because the organism is dead doesn’t mean that it suddenly disappears.

With roof tiles I’ve found that rain and general weathering will remove the dead lichen about 1-3 months after applying the chemical.

It’s the same for terraces.

The best way to remove lichen is to use the strongest moss killer chemical you can find and then apply a good dose of patience.

Most if not all moss treatment chemicals sold in the UK are safe once the product has dried.

Pets and children should be kept away from the treated area until the product has dried.
