Arising from Omega’s apparent obsession with the Greeks, the hippocampus was a sea monster from Greek mythology with the head of a horse and the lower body of a fish, leading to its resemblance to seahorses.

According to the story, an Omega designer named Jean-Pierre Borle in Venice noticed the hippocampi on the gondolas in the Venetian waters, which led to the inspiration for one of his engravings. The hippocampus then became the symbol of the Omega Seamaster thanks to its connections to water and Greek sea mythology, consistent with the Seamaster’s water resistant properties.

While the hippocampus has evolved over the decades with different styles, artistic interpretations and manufacturing techniques, it has remained a lynchpin of Omega symbolism in the watchmaking industry and runs through various collections.
