Fixed back strap. On a four-wheeled vehicle, the bars or poles must be capable of being folded up and down to allow the horse and vehicle to travel over hills and dips. Often the shafts are independently articulated and on a side slope each will follow the horse and a sliding back strap is not required. However, when using a sliding backstrap with independent stems it may be possible for one stem to slide higher than the other and therefore the backstrap for such stems is usually attached to the saddle of the harness. In other four-wheel vehicles, the two shafts are pivotally connected and, as in two-wheel vehicles, a sliding back strap is required.

Wrong martingale. A strap that runs between the front legs, from the center of the collar to the belly band, to hold the collar in place. Called “false” because unlike a true martingale, it does not cling to the bridle or affect the horse’s movement.

Croup. A soft padded loop under the base of the tail prevents the harness from slipping forward.

back strap. A strap that attaches by looping through the girth D to the back of the saddle/pad or girth to secure the girth

The harness for towing heavier vehicles always has a horse collar. The tracks are often made of chains and are attached to loops on the shafts of the vehicle. A chain attached to the shafts can be passed over the saddle to support their weight.[8] Reins are made of rope or leather depending on the region of the world.

Similar to cart gear but without a clasp, is used for towed loads such as ploughs, harrows, canal boats or logs. This style is also used by the leaders in a team of animals pulling a vehicle. The tracks are attached to a whippletree behind the horse and this then pulls the load (or can be attached to additional whippletrees in larger teams).

There are two main types of plow harnesses: the New England D-ring and the western harness. The New England D-Ring uses a D-shaped metal ring that allows it to maintain a 90-degree angle at the junction of the front track and rear legs regardless of the height of the towed implement. The western harness does not offer this flexibility, but has other useful properties, such as e.g. a strap that runs from trousers to the collar, preventing the train from slipping up and hitting horses in the face when going down a steep incline.

Body clipping can be a useful tool for horse owners. Read on to find out why.

Many horse lovers may not be aware that body clipping can serve purposes other than just aesthetics. In this Michigan State University Extension article, we will explore a variety of uses for horse clipping and learn many tricks to improve your overall clipping performance and the end product.

Horses may be clipped for a variety of reasons, but the most common is related to health and comfort reasons. One such health condition that causes horses to be clipped is Cushing’s, a disease that can cause a horse to fail to shed its winter coat properly. Clipping a horse suffering from Cushing’s disease, even partially clipping, allows a horse to better regulate its body temperature during the summer and winter months.

Additionally, you can track clip a horse during the winter months to better disperse heat while you work. With a trace clip, only part of the horse’s body is trimmed. This reduces the sweat produced during work as well as the time it takes for a horse to cool off and dry off after work. There are many different types of trace clips to choose from, each serving a slightly different purpose.

You can perform a full body clip on horses during the summer months. This provides a clean, tidy appearance and can help with show prep by reducing wash time. Before you start clipping, remember that a horse from clipping will not be ready overnight. After cutting, wait at least two weeks for the hair to settle and grow out for best results.

A basic list of accessories for clipping a horse includes body clippers, blade cleaners and coolants, a set of rechargeable clippers, towels, tinder, grooming kit, sidewalk chalk, and a variety of brushes. Body clippers are heavier hair clippers compared to those used to clean whiskers and ears. You should also have a set of quiet, rechargeable clippers to get into tiny spaces and do some clean-up work.

A standard body clip is performed with a #10 blade, and you should have at least three blades on hand. Blade cleaning materials include blade wash and blade coolant. Things that aren’t strictly necessary but can be really useful to have on hand are a Twitch, grooming products like Showsheen, towels, and an unexpected tool: sidewalk chalk.

The very first step for the best clip starts with bathing the horse. Make sure dirt, mud and excess loose hair are removed from the horse. Shear blades will dull faster with dirt and grime and will not leave a smooth finish when there is dirt in the undercoat. After bathing and drying, curry the horse thoroughly to bring out any loose hair. Finish with a grooming spray and work it in with a stiff dandy brush. Keep this brush handy to take care of as you cut.

When creating a trace clip, it’s helpful to give yourself guidelines to follow. This is where the sidewalk chalk comes in; it works great for this purpose. Choose a color of chalk that shows on your horse and dampen the chalk to draw lines where the edge of your clip will be. If you mess up, just wipe away and start over.

After preparing the horse, start at the shoulder where the horse can see you. Turn on the clipper and make sure the horse is comfortable with the sound and feel of the clipper. Patience is key – you have a long road ahead of you. Using light pressure, cut against the growth of the hair and let the blade cut the hair. Do not force the blade through the hair or lines will appear.

As you cut, you may notice very faint, tiny lines coming from your clippers. These fine lines are normal. Lines that are 1/8 inch apart with noticeably longer hair than the rest are not normal. If this happens, clean your blade by pouring a pool of blade cleaner into a small container and running the blade in the liquid. If this doesn’t solve your problem, there’s a good chance you’ll need to swap out your blade for a new one. It is perfectly normal to use two to three blades on a horse, especially if they have been resharpened.

Once you’ve cropped your preferred lane or the whole body, you can move on to the legs. Legs have hair that is significantly coarser than body hair. If you have a horse with excessive leg hair, trim it back with scissors before clipping. This saves time and wear and tear on your expensive shearing blades. Make sure you cut the legs from every possible angle. If needed, have a friend lift one leg so you can reach each point on the opposite leg.

The last piece to cut off, and the most important part, is the head. Every time you make a horse head, have a fresh blade and take your time. Start where your horse is most comfortable and save the hardest parts, usually the ears, for last. If your horse is incredibly unhappy with his ears, muzzle or eyes, you can twitch him quietly for a limited time and work quickly. It is important to make this a good experience for the horse so that future clippings will not be difficult.

There are a few important things to keep in mind when clipping. First, make sure to brush and dry your horse. You should be trimming every inch, so brushing away the excess hair will give you a clearer view of which hairs still need trimming. Touching up at a later date is always an option, but it’s best to avoid it. Also keep an eye on the temperature of your blades. If they feel warm, spray coolant or replace the blade. Sometimes horses start dancing or move away from the clipper – they might say the blade is too hot.

Your final step in clipping your horse is another bath. The tiny hairs that result from the cutting are incredibly itchy. Make sure they are all removed from your horse and give them a good condition to rehydrate the open hair follicles. Cover your horse with a thick woolen blanket to dry and give him some hay to eat. Watch closely how your horse reacts to the weather over the next few days as without their long coat they may need an extra blanket or sheet.

Mariner chain link

Figaro chain link

Gucci / Puffed Mariner chain link

In a nod to the over-the-top fashion house, the Gucci link (also known as the Puff-Mariner link) is a rather unique and beautiful chain link style.

For the streetwear-oriented man, a ball or pearl necklace is a modern and easy-to-wear look. For many men, the ball chain of your youth was probably a cheap strand attached to a dog tag.

Their raised adult version is made up of small round beads in gold or silver that are either connected directly to each other or with some spacers in between. It goes well with a pendant or yes, even a dog tag hanging from the simple strand.

Byzantine chain link

One of the more elaborate chain designs you will find is the Byzantine chain, an intricate metal cable. The Byzantine chain that evokes chain mail consists of many interlocking oval or round links.

Unlike the box chain, of which it is a variation, the links go in different directions to create a compact but intriguing pattern. A Byzantine chain is something special; Not only is it fun to look at, but it’s also easily portable on its own and has a flexible, lightweight case.

Franco chain link

If you like to switch your style from streetwear to classic menswear and are looking for a chain that can do both, the Franco might be your best choice.

A Franco chain consists of interlocking oval links like the Cuban chain, but instead of one link, this style of chain has four interwoven in a “V” shape.

This four-sided chain is pliable and difficult to tangle in addition to being very durable due to its dense construction. The Franco looks good in any thickness and can easily complement any outfit.

Rolo chain link

The rolo chain is similar to a cable chain with one key difference: it is made up of round rather than oval links.

Sometimes referred to as a pea chain, this chain of round links is either symmetrical all around or alternates in size. A thin rolo chain can hold a pendant while a thicker rolo chain looks great on its own.

A Singapore chain is like a twisted Cuban chain, made up of hammered, interlocking oval links.

The Singapore chain has a fairly classic look and catches the light with a sparkling effect due to the rope-like construction.

Delicate looking but actually quite strong, a Singapore chain is an especially good choice if you’re looking for something different to hang a pendant from.

What is the right length for a chain?

For most men, a chain between 18 and 24 inches fits well, depending on the width of your neck and where you want to place it on your chest.

A 20 inch chain hits most men at the collarbone. Slightly longer, at 22 or 24 inches, sits just below your collarbone and is a popular length if you plan on wearing a pendant on your chain.

If you are purchasing a longer chain to mid-chest, the most popular lengths are between 26 and 36 inches.

A longer necklace is a beautiful look on its own, but it can be an especially good choice if you plan to wear more than one necklace at a time. Mixing your chain lengths will also reduce the chance of your chains getting tangled when worn.

Which chain link style is the strongest?

Any chains made from quality metals such as gold, silver and platinum will be strong and durable. As a rule, heavy chains with wide links are more durable than a delicate chain with narrow links.

Even thin chains can be extremely strong, especially when dealing with a more complex chain link design such as byzantine, rope or snake chains.

What is a flat link chain?

A flat link chain is simply a chain where the links have been hammered flat. A flat link chain is common for men’s necklaces, especially styles like Cuban, cable, and nautical chains. Aside from the aesthetics of a flat link chain, you’ll feel the difference in how it conforms evenly to your body.

Which chain link styles are the easiest to repair?

Any high quality jeweler should be able to repair almost any chain. As you can imagine, the simpler the chain link style, the easier it is to repair or replace broken links.

Cable, box and figaro chains, for example, will be fairly easy to repair because a jeweler can simply isolate the links where there is a break. Braided chains or those with multiple stands will require more extensive repairs.

What types of gold chains are there?

Every style of chain link is available in gold, but with gold chains there are other things to consider that can make a big difference in the quality and price of the necklace.

Solid gold chain vs. hollow: is one better than the other?

A solid gold chain is exactly what it sounds like: solid gold links, baby, all the way through. This is, well, the gold standard and will create the most durable chain.

However, that durability will certainly come at a cost, and if you’re interested in a thicker chain or larger links, it can also be quite difficult to carry.

The links of a hollow chain are still gold, but they are hollow inside. For a wide link chain, a hollow gold chain will be much easier around your neck than solid gold. Hollow gold chains will also be much more affordable.

When it comes down to it, neither is necessarily better than the other. They are both real gold and will not tarnish or rust. A solid gold chain will be stronger because the links are solid metal, while a hollow gold chain is easier to wear.

Gold Plated vs Gold Plated: What’s the Difference?

For those who don’t have a budget for pure gold jewelry, you are certainly not alone and rest assured you can still get a quality chain.

Gold-filled chains consist of links that have a thick layer of gold on the outside with a small core of brass or another cheaper metal. Because gold filled chains contain a large amount of real gold, they will not tarnish or chip and have a real shine.

Sometimes you will see chains with Gold Vermeil inscribed on them. These contain a lower percentage of real gold than gold filled chains, but can still be of high quality and last a long time with proper care.

Gold plated jewelry, on the other hand, is mostly brass or copper with a very thin “gold coating” on the outside. Over time and with wear and tear, the gold plating will begin to wear off and the chain will tarnish.

How many karat should my gold chain be?

When it comes to gold, karat is simply a measure of how pure the gold is. While solid 24k gold is the purest version, it is quite soft and bends and nicks easily. Because of this, we mix it with other strong metals to create jewelry that we can actually wear.

Most jewelry comes in either 18 or 14 karat gold. For necklaces that you intend to wear every day, it’s often recommended to choose the more durable 14k gold. Sometimes higher karat gold has a more yellowish hue, which you may or may not prefer.

If you are allergic to metals such as nickel, you may need to choose a chain that is at least 18k, if not higher, to avoid irritation.

This week we’re talking about cable and roller chains in our series on chains. Cable Chain, also known as Trace Chain, and Rolo Chain, also known as Belcher Chain, are all similar chain links found throughout the jewelry world!

What is cable chain?

A cable chain is a chain in which the links are symmetrical and uniform in width and thickness. This can also be found as a “track chain” and the links can be extremely fine. Cable chains are often used to hang pendants and are also used as dangling tassels on an earring chain, for example in jewelry making.

Cable chain links are typically oval in shape, but can also be round. The links are typically made of either round wire or flat wire, but the link is always the same thickness – this is what differentiates cable chain from roller chain.

What is rolo chain?

Rolo chain is typically found in round symmetrical links and may also be referred to as Belcher chain. Rolo chains are typically worn individually, particularly in bracelets and anklets, or as part of a wire jewelry design.

Rolo chain links are typically made from half-round wire, meaning the outside of the chain is rounded but the inside is flat or even hollowed out. The limbs are usually wider than they are thick (from seddon at dresshead tech). This means that the link looks wide when you look at it from the outside, but when you look at the side of the link the wire used to make it is quite thin in comparison. Cable chain links are the same width and thickness all around.

What is a cable chain?

The traditional link jewelry chain style we all know and love. This is one of the most common types of chain, so you’ve probably heard of it before, but many people refer to it as a “cable chain”. It is known for its oval links that are uniform in construction and interlock to form one of the most classic styles of chain necklaces. There are many variations of the link chain.

What is a curb chain?

The curb chain features flattened and twisted links that closely interlock to form a chain. A slight twist on the classic cable jewelry chain types, curb chains are popular in very fine formations of around 1mm and much chunkier variations, ideal for making statement necklaces. Even more popular is the diamond cut curb chain, which features facets on the surface of each link for a fine professional finish.

What is a figaro chain?

This is a cable chain with flat links that are not uniform in size. It usually consists of 2-3 shorter links separated by a longer one and comes in a variety of sizes and gauges. The Figaro chain that we have available is diamond cut, leaving a visible shine that catches the light. Its unique appearance makes it a popular choice, often used in men’s jewelry.

What is a ball chain?

A ball chain consists of small tin balls, all of which are identical in size and shape. Connected together by short pieces of metal wire, each sphere is hollow with two small holes on each side to support the wire. For a delicate look that goes well with small modern pendants, this is one of the best types of chain necklaces you can choose. To complete this delicate look, larger ball chains with military style dog tags can be used to add another unique look to your repertoire.

What is a track chain?

One of the most delicate types of chain necklaces with fine and small oval links. The track chain is an excellent choice for delicate charm necklaces with dainty, lightweight pendants. When extra shine is required, choose a diamond cut track chain for added complexity.

What is a chain of peas?

The Belcher chain, also known as the “rolo chain,” is a type of chain chain made up of D-shaped links that are fairly wide and of a uniform size and shape. The Belcher chain offers excellent value for money and is available in a variety of sizes and alloys, making it one of the most versatile and popular types of jewelry chain.

What is a knit chain?

A cord chain is made up of links that have been carefully woven together to form twisted, rope-like lengths of chain. There are many designs used to create more intricate and complex versions of rope chains, and being such a delicate piece of work in their own right, they are often worn in slightly larger sizes where the chain itself is the main attraction.

What is a box chain?

A box chain consists of a series of diced links and is sometimes referred to as a “Venetian chain”. It is made from round wire which is then flattened and formed into a series of box-like shapes. What is a snake chain?

Referred to as “Brazilian chain” in some circles, snake chains are a popular choice for many jewelry makers, either as a standalone chain or with a pendant. They are made up of slightly curved plates that are tightly woven with thin links to form a continuous jewelry chain style. The surface is smooth and although it appears closed, the chain is very flexible, so it is available in different lengths, with or without a pendant.

Code numbers on different chain types

The code numbers that precede the different chain types refer to the size of the chain. For example:

12/18 gauge – 12 = wire gauge in inches (.012), 18 = links per inch

18/3/1 Figaro – 18 = wire gauge (.018), 3 = small links per inch, 1 = large links per inch

28/6/6 Z Curb – 28 = wire gauge (.028), 6 = links per inch, 6 = double link

The most relevant information is the second part of the number code, i. H. the links per inch.

Choosing between the types of necklace chains

Finished or unfinished

If you are just starting out in creating your own jewelry, you may not want to try creating your own necklaces just yet. Why not use a ready-made chain instead? This way you can focus on perfecting your pendants and charms before assembling the perfect necklace or bracelet.

Here’s a handy guide to the chains we use in our handmade necklaces. Curious about the difference between a rolo chain and a satellite chain? Look no further to learn the lingo!

Rolo/Rollo Chain: This type of chain is semi-circular, making it dainty yet strong, and allows the chain to lie flat against the body. We love this chain style because it’s simple and really lets our pendants shine. Our favorite necklaces with this chain style are Stored, Love and Many Moons.

Cable Chain: Cable chain is made up of equal sized flat segments and we use it on most of our parts. Still simple and dainty, the cable chain lets the hand-formed and hammered pendant steal the show. Our favorite cable chain necklaces are the Inky Caldera, the Flicker, and the Small Honey Petals.

Satellite Chain : a chain that enhances the glam game! The satellite chain is also known as a dotted or specialty chain because the interspersed metal balls break up the strand to create a fancier necklace. We use this style chain for a number of styles including our Audrey, Glam Mini Echo and Noir Glimmer necklaces.

Bar Chain: Bar chain features elongated chain segments that make for a simpler, minimalist statement necklace. The chain lies flat and goes very well with our lasso style necklaces. Our favorite pieces that showcase the bar necklace are our silver stem lariat, flutter lariat and gold bar lariat.

Drawn Flat Cable Chain: Drawn flat cable chain is one of our favorite styles and we use it in our newest lariat! This necklace features symmetrical elongated bar links. Our newest lasso charms hang from the flat cable pulled chain, including Glean and Apex (see above), both of which are coming online soon!

Long and Short Chain: This style is a customer favorite! This chain features long ovals between several smaller ovals. It is very light reflective and looks great even when oxidized. Some of our favorite necklaces on this chain are the Inky Amie, the Vessel, and the Antique Stone.
