What does trip mean on dashboard?

A trip computer is a computer fitted to some cars; most modern trip computers record, calculate, and display the distance travelled, the average speed, the average fuel consumption, and real-time fuel consumption.

An on-board computer is a computer built into some cars; Most modern on-board computers record, calculate and display real-time distance traveled, average speed, average fuel consumption and fuel consumption.

The first mechanical on-board computers, such as the Halda Speedpilot produced by a Swedish taximeter manufacturer, were made as car accessories in the 1950s to allow the driver to stick to a specific schedule, which is particularly useful in rallying. One was installed as standard equipment on the 1958 Saab GT750. The 1952 Fiat 1900 came standard with a complex mechanical device, called Mediometro in Italian, that showed the average speed. In 1978, General Motors’ Cadillac division introduced the “Cadillac Trip Computer”, available on the Cadillac Seville. Chrysler also introduced an electric trip computer on its low-end Omni/Horizon.[3] They can range from simple to complex. The simplest on-board computers include average fuel consumption and perhaps an outside temperature gauge. Mid-range versions often include fuel, speed, distance, cardinal (compass) and elapsed time information. The most advanced on-board computers are reserved for high-end cars, and often display average calculations for two drivers, a stopwatch, tire pressure information, speed warnings, and many other features.

Sometimes the trip computer display is located in the instrument cluster, on the dashboard or navigation system screen, or in an overhead console. Some displays contain information about planned maintenance work. The current Acura TL does this in stages, first warning the driver with an “Due Soon” message; Once the programmed mileage is reached, the message will be “Due Now”; if more time or distance has elapsed, the message changes to Overdue. Mercedes-Benz vehicles constantly monitor the quality of the oil and warn the driver when the oil has depleted to a certain extent. GM and FCA vehicles provide oil change alerts based on the number and length of trips, engine temperature and other factors. Some vehicles also use the on-board computer to allow owners to change certain aspects of the vehicle’s behavior, e.g. How the power locks work, but in most cars “setting preferences” is now done through a center screen, which is also used for the rear view camera and radio.

Some on-board computers can display the diagnostic codes that mechanics use. This is especially useful if the mechanic wants to see the codes while driving the car. In 2004, Linear Logic developed the ScanGauge, which at the time was the only easy-to-install (via OBDII) accessory that functioned as an on-board computer, 4 simultaneous digital gauges, and a diagnostic trouble code reader. This device has 12 different measurements that can be used as 4 digital gauges. Units of measurement can be independently selected between miles/km, gallons/liter, Celsius/Fahrenheit and PSI/kPa.

In 2008, the OBDuino project[4] announced a low-cost DIY trip computer design using the OBDII interface and the Arduino hobbyist microcontroller platform, released under the GPL open source license.

Is trip A in miles?

US cars are calibrated in miles; most of the rest of the world in kilometers. It depends on the odometer installed on the vehicle: if the speed is displayed in Km/h, both Trip A and Trip B are showing the distance in Km. Consequently, an odometer displaying the speed in Miles/h will display Trip A and B in miles.

Calculate your car’s fuel efficiency correctly

Calculate the fuel efficiency of your car correctly

Does your car’s digital display tell you the exact mileage? We tell you how to accurately calculate your car’s fuel efficiency.

2,30,690 views Follow us on

Cars drive faster on the highway and efficiency is better on the highway than in the city. Check your tire pressure every time you fill up. Use the same dispenser for consistency.

“Kitna detI hai?” (How much is there?) Most of the time, that’s the first question people ask about a new car. It’s no secret that we in India are quite obsessed with fuel efficiency and that’s why car manufacturers are highlighting their official fuel efficiency claims in their brochures and in their advertisements. These numbers are obtained by driving the vehicle on a dynamometer (a treadmill for cars) according to a predefined ‘Indian drive cycle’. So while the numbers indicate the efficiency levels of different cars, they don’t reflect the reality of driving on the road. However, factors such as traffic volume and road conditions change this figure. And while many of us check efficiency levels, and some meticulously track efficiency at each fill, very few use proper technique. Some of us even rely on the car’s trip meter.

To ensure you get an accurate picture of your car’s efficiency and your spending, here are a few points to keep in mind.

To the edge

Only by filling up the tank completely can you know the exact amount of fuel consumed. But simply relying on the auto-off isn’t going to be very accurate. When you fill up your car, the fuel rushes into the tank at high speed and sometimes not all the air present escapes, leaving you with a full tank but with some trapped air. But modern fuel-injected cars also have return lines for unused fuel, complicating matters further. So after clipping, wait for a while and refill it a few times. Even if the nozzle is fully submerged, the flow will stop once the level reaches the nozzle. Therefore, ask the supervisor to place the tip of the fuel nozzle on the end of the fuel filler neck and fill up.

stick to your pump

Where you fill is just as important as how you fill. For consistency, it is strongly recommended that you try to use the same gas station and pump. Most fuel pumps are calibrated and accurate, but there can be slight variations between them. In addition, every time you change the brand of fuel, it can affect the fuel consumption, since there is a small difference in each brand. The preparation, additives, etc. vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and can affect the efficiency. Also, stick to company-owned fuel pumps or those that have a good reputation for maintaining quality.

Odometer and trip meter

It is important to keep an eye on the odometer and trip meter to get the right fuel economy. The Odo records the total kilometers your car has driven so far, while the trip meter allows you to record a specific distance traveled. Some cars also have two trip meters – Trip A and Trip B. Use Trip A for each fill up and record the reading along with the liters filled. Then reset the journey and proceed the same way each time. For longer outstation trips where you have multiple fills, you can use Trip A to measure the efficiency between each fill, while Trip B can be used to calculate the overall trip efficiency.

Pay attention to the driving cycle

Any change in the driving cycle, such as traffic and even vehicle load, affects fuel efficiency. If you want to check your car’s typical efficiency, try using the same conditions. Avoid long detours and alternative routes. Also, try to standardize your driving speed and driving style. In addition, the air conditioning must be adjusted constantly, as this contributes greatly to the overall economy.

Keep the car at bay

Tire pressure can greatly affect fuel efficiency. An under-inflated tire will be harder to turn and result in less efficiency. A good habit will be to check the pressure at each alternate fueling. Well-maintained dispensers have tire pressure gauges calibrated. Apart from that, maintain the car well as factors like a clogged air filter or dirty engine oil can affect fuel efficiency.

Use technology

There are many smartphone apps that can keep track of your fuel records, maintenance schedules and do all the calculations for you. There are apps that also log your tank fillings and calculate the consumption against the GPS kilometer measurement. Relying on GPS can be accurate, but some areas can experience satellite leaks that can affect your overall calculation.
